The WORST Handling F1 Car EVER?

    In 2014, Ferrari made a car that was UNDRIVEABLE. It’s been said a million times, that the F14T was the car that Understeered AND Oversteered at the same time!
    So, I’ve been watching loads of onboards to figure out WHAT was wrong with it, and it brought about a strange realisation. Let me explain.
    Look at this - it’s Alonso at Abu Dhabi and this car looks A HANDFUL. The car looks bad on traction, but then as he turns into the left - it understeers on the way in and then Fernando gets a LOAD of oversteer on the exit. And it’s a similar thing with the next corner.

      @@ciaronsmith4995 Your point being what exactly? Alonso had two podiums in the season. Furthermore, Räikkönen was absolutely destroyed in every metric across the season and was never even close to winning a race. Anyone who dominates a driver of Räikkönen's calibre like that obviously had an absolutely terrific year.

    • @ciaronsmith4995
      @ciaronsmith4995 Год назад +12

      Nonsense. Raikkonen just joined that year and found the car undriveable - the car suited Alonso far more given the mass understeer on corner entry. Further, Kimi had a rookie race engineer who couldn't speak English (and was fired later). Alonso got lucky, plain and simple.
      Try to get this through your thick skull: In cars that suit both, Kimi is obviously, and utterly faster as his ballistic stint at McLaren and Lotus showed. Watch F1 before you comment lad.@@whatisabercowich

    • @whatisabercowich
      @whatisabercowich Год назад +90

      @@ciaronsmith4995 The amount of excuses necessary to explain the difference in performance is insurmountable. Luck could explain one or two races, not the entirety of the season.
      Ultimately, Räikkönen's stints at McLaren and Lotus show absolutely nothing. His teammate at Lotus was Grosjean, not exactly a top line driver. His teammates at McLaren were Coulthard, who was also not a top line driver, and Montoya, who had been flattered by some very good machinery. I'm sure Alonso would have performed very well in those cars as well.
      It is also very convenient of you to ignore both of Räikkönen's stints at Ferrari. In the years following 2014, he was comfortably outperformed by Vettel. As a younger driver, he was also very similar in pace to Felipe Massa, who was also decidedly in Alonso's shadow.
      There is no question that Räikkönen was a terrific GP driver. His peaks were very high, maybe even comparable to Alonso's, but his dips were much, much lower. Adaptability is a vital part of being a succesful GP driver.

    • @ciaronsmith4995
      @ciaronsmith4995 Год назад

      It's not an excuse. It's a hard fact. A rudimentary analysis and basic understanding of driving styles would answer this for you, yet here you are flailing like a fish because you don't know anything about racing.When a car is so fundamentally unsuited to a driver's driving style, as was the case with Kimi, there is almost nothing you can do. It's luck of the draw, especially when you have a pullrod front suspension that makes it impossible to adjust the front end. Everyone and their mother knows there isn't a driver who is more dependent on a massively positive front end than Kimi Raikkonen. If you don't know this, shut down your computer and never ever watch Formula 1 again, your knowledge gap and the subsequent information asymmetry on display here is utterly shambolic. Get. Real. well, let's talk about who's coping the most. first of all, you know who arrivabene is and what did he do before f1? right, second, in this very video you can see that despite the oversteer to power surge at the exit, that isn't actually oversteer, that is total traction loss, that kimi struggling to hit the apex while alonso had no problem because that suited his driving style more. so the car had understeer, while the oversteer wasn't actually recoverable because it was actually power/torque surge (hence which the author himself noted that the car suited alonso more)
      because kimi's last time in ferrari, he drove the f2008, which is an improved f2007 in which he won the championship with. he was unfamiliar with everything the new ferrari car resembled, including the unsmooth nature of power delivery, meanwhile alonso had previous experience with renault engines and post 2009 ferrari cars. moreover kimi was on a fresh return absent from f1 and busy with rallying while alonsotardies like you were busy sending literal death threats to petrov and kubica as alonso was busy getting battered by redbull. did that help you to cope with 2010? lmao

    Hey Scott! One key factor you mentioned is that Ferrari tried to move the engine as forward as possible. A mass very close to the center of the car might be one of the causes for the car behavior due to the changes in the polar moment of inertia.
    It is widely known that cars which have the bulk of the mass close to the center of the car between the axles handle better, but if you center it way too much, the car becomes critical and it is very very hard to handle because of how sensible it becomes to steering input. One good example of this was the Lancia Stratos, and other less extreme but yet well known is the Toyota MR2.
    For whatever reason or design choice, this Ferrari had a tendency to understeer like you explained. But then the polar moment of inertia caused by the bulk of the car weight very close to the center could be the reason why it snapped into oversteer when the drivers tried to correct during a turn.
    This is no explanation since I lack data, just an assumption which might be worth exploring by people with better knowledge than me.

The clips from Silverstone Village corners, Abu Dhabi sector 3, etc that showed their instability aren’t entirely exclusive to Ferrari. A couple of people also had the theory that the F14T had very bad balance at low speed due to the placement and the terrible mapping of the PU, but had much better balance and load than majority of the cars at higher speed. However those comments were quickly rampaged by those who believed otherwise. Such as the result of commenting in Alonso clips.

    Not related to the Ferrari, but the reddit comments about alonso's video:
    Normally understeer and oversteer in entry and exit, you resolve the US first. The entry understeer reduces the speed too much, and when you apply the throttle, the low speed and high power looses the rear.

    I think you are overlooking a serious design flaw. The angle of the front upper and lower control arms (deviating from horizontal) means that every vertical suspension movement also pushes or pulls the tires laterally. Hit a bump or otherwise generate squat or dive, and the front tires are forced to scrub sideways, robbing available grip and sending the car darting one way or another, depending on which tire has the better grip at the moment.

    Remember when they said the higher and narrower rear wing with the wider front would give more overtaking?..
    ....now they made the rear wing lower and wider to give more overtaking?
    You can't overtake if you have a front wing taking up half the track width and a chassis taking up half the front staight.

    Pretty bad for a race car, but not quite as bad as the electric car (named Hammerhead Eagle i-Thrust) built by the UK Top Gear guys in 2010.
    According to the motor magazine Autocar HQ that got to do a "consumer test" of it it had extreme under-steering when entering a corner without touching the brakes. If the driver applied some braking the front wheels would get a grip and the car would instantly go from under-steer to over-steer!
