  • My first official stop on the Lake Ontario Foodie Road Trip is Ray’s Diner & Tavern, located at 694 Lake Road in Youngstown, New York. I discovered Ray’s through a simple Google Maps search while trying to find a restaurant near the start of my road trip. When I read some reviews about their Beef on Weck, I knew I had to make it my first stop.
Ray’s is situated directly across from Lake Ontario and has been serving the local community since the 1950s. They offer a variety of foods on the menu, but they’re best known for their Beef on Weck Sandwich, Beef on Weck wings, and Friday Fish Fry.
While talking to the owners, I learned that they buy as much local produce as possible when it’s in season and freeze it to use in recipes over the winter months. They make their sauces in-house, and I have to say, the Horsey Sauce served with their Beef on Weck is one of the best things I’ve had. It’s sweet, with just the right amount of that horseradish kick. I could put that sauce on just about anything and love it.
I also tried their Fish Fry, which was really good-flaky, perfectly breaded, and served with house-cut French fries and house-made coleslaw. Oh, and the house-made tartar sauce was excellent.
Ray’s Diner & Tavern was the perfect start to this Lake Ontario Foodie Road Trip. Stay tuned and follow along as I explore hidden gems, local favorites, and great spots along Lake Ontario, from Youngstown to Oswego.
