- After being forced to close in 2020, owner Luis Skibar reopened Old John’s Luncheonette in NYC with a focus on modernizing the old-fashioned diner concept. Old John’s is one of the oldest diners in the city, and serves dishes like roasted short rib, tuna melt sandwiches, apple cinnamon pancakes, and more diner classics.

Love that y’all are focusing more on non-fine dining !!
Might not be fine dining, but sure looks like fine diner :)
@@Brad25Kingyeah, this is not a regular diner. It’s probably quite a bit more expensive.
@@Brad25Kingfine morning, eating a fine breakfast, in a fine dining diner 😅
Agreed, as much as I love these videos and they're super well done, I can only watch so many chefs creating extravagant dishes just for the sake of being extravagant and assembling plates with tweezers in order to serve 30 people a night at $400 a pop. Often times real kitchens that serve real food to real people is way more interesting.
Yum!!
That chef is just incredible!!! What a heart and soul in every ingredient and pride in every part of the menu. Amazing guy and amazing team + management. 10/10

Amazing of them to pull off such a large menu and maintain such high quality.
Any restaurant should be able to with no problems.
@@nonenoneonenonenone It should on paper but many still fail to do it right.
I like how you brought the Hispanic chefs in the story. It shows how hard they work and how they don't stop. They do everything from start to finish.
And it reflects the majority of restaurants in US.
@@josecl7I know right? Seems like the title of the video needs to be updated
Something all people with hispanic lineage is hardwork. It's just crazy that we fkn kill ourselves at work even when the work doesnt pay well meanwhile some mofos just chill around not giving much effort but for some reason I cant do the same. I have to go above and beyond 🤦🤦🤦🤦 I would love to procrastinate sometimes but something might have happened to my ancestors in the past that stops me from doing it 😅 getting a garote and whipping left a mark in their DNA ☠️
That's b.s. Many are lazy and do the minimum, you never get finely chopped vegetables, only large chunks. Maybe not here, but in places I went to.
@@nonenoneonenonenone You going to the wrong places.
I respect the people who worked in the back of the restaurant. My father worked as a chef for 40 years so I know it’s hard work. My dad doesn’t speak English but he can cooked delicious meals.
His dish talked for him 😂
So he’s illegal?
@@AC-kf2kyI didn’t know english is a prerequisite for cooking delicious meals but ok…..karen
@@ShadowLynx516 who said it was? Keep reaching honey
@@AC-kf2ky This is an insane comment. You can be a legal immigrant and not speak English
Producing consistent quality at high volume and with a large menu selection is a huge challenge, but, Chef Victor and his team pull it off very well. You have to tip your cap to all of these folks for the hard work that they put in to achieve great results. And, let's give props to Mr. Skibar -- to go from working as a deliveryman (I read that online) to owner of the very same establishment (and, many others) -- that's the essence of the American Dream, right there.
This is not a diner its a full fledged restaurant. Amazing food! I hope they price it right so they can make a decent profit and stay open. Salmon and asparagus in a diner is amazing!
The owner mentions this.
Of course it’s going to be priced right it’s New York City
Exactly, it's not a diner.
In New York we have diners to that serve everything.
I moved out of NYC in 2020 and was saddened at that time to learn Old John's had to close down...I'd eaten there many times. So happy to hear it's been reopened. We lost so many businesses during the pandemic and really happy to hear that one has reopened.
Every dish that I watched moved into the pass was spot on. I love their full on scratch menu. I think their menu is perfectly sized for their service, a flaw too many restaurants with large menus fall into. Wish their business the best.
🙌🏼🙌🏼
Watching deliveries being slid down into the basement, using improvised slides on the stairs, brings back so many memories for me. I was recently talking to my friends from outside of NY about that, and they didn't even know what I was talking about. It's nice to know this type of delivery still goes on, because I've seen so many of my childhood establishments close down. We use to walk on the steel doors when we walked by, because we thought it brought good luck.
Always our Hispanic brothers and sisters working hard in the background to keep our country running. Bless all of you.
I’m so happy they got a spotlight in this interview
America wouldn't have a restaurant industry to begin with if it wasn't for the Hispanics and Latinos/Latinas running those kitchens.
I was in the area of this diner and just ended up wanting to grab some breakfast/lunch food and walked into this place - I still remember how pleasantly surprised I was at the quality of food and the cleanliness of the joint. It's very cool to see them get their dues.
This is a real chef, I’ve worked back of the house before and the Spanglish is what you hear through out the kitchen. Happy they are getting recognition because they really work hard
Bro major shout out to chef Victor the heart of this diner my man's has mad passion and live for what he does
I miss the dinners in New York. I'm glad he's showcasing his staff. All hardworking people.
I need to stop watching these on an empty stomach 🤤
Salute to the people working behind the food that we eat
Shout out to all my Latinos working in the kitchen! The backbone of the service industry
Ms. Martha absolutely slicing up that salmon fired me up 🔥
If he cooks diner food that good. I'd love to try some of his Mexican dishes.
We need more Diners in the country! Old fashioned homestyle cooking with good size portions and quality ingredients. Find that in the fancy restaurant that charges you $100 for something that doesn't even cove the plate!
I agree. So sick of all kinds of "ethnic" cuisines but its damn hard for find a good old fashioned American diner.
Diners truly love all, serve all.
@@jdelorenzod2725Nobody is forcing you to eat “ethnic” cuisine, which is only the foods from all our different backgrounds. You can go anywhere in any city or town in America and order diner-style food. No lack of omelets or pork chops or fish and chips or waffles or hamburgers. Ethnic restaurants open so we can have variety from the same-old same-old.
yea they need to go back to their countries! @@jdelorenzod2725
Preparing the meat and the fish shows the honor and respect of how food is cooked you need that understanding to know what you doing and how to do it right and pick the right ingredients and food and make it be as good as people think it should be
Those pancakes looked insane
Eater never disappoints. Their content has always been the best.
Never been consistent tho. The amount of shows the axed without even saying anything
@@nurlagrandeDo you want them to make press releases or email you regarding every decision they make?

I love how caring and passionate they are and want to bring high quality food to the table. In a regular diner I would never order fish (except tuna melt) but I want to eat everything they have shown here!
I find it so amazing that this place is operated by hard working immigrants and serving up the classic American dishes.
Favourite RUclips Channel and the best editors out there in my opinion every video is well made keep it up!
There chef's work so hard and are proud of their work. I admire them.
Nothing frozen, just quality hand-prepped and fresh ingredients. This is why I pay for food in a restaurant. If I get served something frozen and microwaved it makes me angry - I could have done that at home. I am willing to pay to have professionals like this make quality food.
John's is a great diner, one of the few in that part of town. Off the path but close enough to the buzz of Broadway to take in before a show or just because! I am glad it survived the Pandemic. That area has changed so much over the last decades, but John's remains an anchor.
Fantastic video, it is really enlightening, the quality of the cuisine, the Chef completely nails his job, he is a hero, love the bilingualism too. I wish we had such hard-working folk producing such brilliant food in a diner in the UK. Well done to all involved. Thank you.
My man Victor speaks better English than he does Spanish. He's just straight making up words for cooking in Spanish!! LOL
I was dying when I heard "el celery, los carrots"!
¡"El apio, las zanahorias" mi amigo!
@@mls01981 Ha, that's funny. I don't speak Spanish and thought that sounded a bit odd.
Eater can make you feel hungry, admiration and hungry over and over again. Nothing but the best with Eater.
That tuna melt sandwich just made me drool…..I’ve just eaten too 😂
I’ve always loved a good diner. Mike’s Diner, Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. Same Greek family and Mexican staff for the twenty years I went there. Consistency is everything. I ordered the same thing for twenty years and always got it exactly the same way preferred. Awesome place. Now I live in Mexico City, Mexico where the first (to the delight of many us here) an American owned diner by New Yorkers has opened OJO ROJO Diner (Red Eye Diner).
Great video. These people work hard. That tuna melt looked delicious!
Congratulations and wish you all continued success! Must visit next time in NY. Greetings from Ireland!
Eater never disappoints. Their content has always been the best.. Salute to the people working behind the food that we eat.
Oh man, the food looked great. Kitchen staff are the heroes!
The cuteness overload in this video is beyond words!
Didn’t know about this Diner! Great report, visuals and interviews!
Really labor of love! Respect for all these folks
I LOVE diners. There's not enough of them here in Canada. The food is usually simple, much of it homemade. I've found with diners, you get what describe on the menu. This one looks especially great. 😋
So impressed by the team here. Stunning work
That's hard work! I hope y'all are well paid. The food looks beautiful. I would love to eat there. They clearly care about what they do.
Wow the quality of the the food is amazing!
Blessings for Luis his business and his staff.
That backline is amazing. Hard work
I've always wanted to go to one of these New York City diners.
respect to the chef for giving time with his masterpiece its so delicious
Everything looks fantastic!
That food looks Amazing! Can't wait to travel to New York and try the food.
Dang that looks amazing 🤩!!
Its what I miss most about NYC - a good diner. Everything in this video is amazing I have no doubt.
wow this place looks amazing!
Yet another NYC restaurant I need to try!
This looks amazing!
Oh, I haven't sat in a diner since the nineties. Back then, I would dip in for quick lunch, maybe a burger, club or tuna sando, or a nice salad. A lot of times I'd just get a slice of pie with coffee or donut with coffee. Whatever I got, it would be delicious. It would be a Jersey diner because I lived in NJ. I worked in Manhattan, but I never visited a Manhattan diner. It was always some restaurant in the area where I worked.
Their food looks amazing! 🖤✨🤩
Respect to the Chef!! food looks so good!!!!!!!!
What a great spot. I love the show. Please keep up the good work.
Great video! Reminds me of my years as a dishwasher at a local pizza place. The Latino chefs and prep cooks were so hard working! I tutored several in English during slow moments.
Wow! All that food looked amazing. Chef know's his stuff.
It all looks so good. Hope to try it someday.
Watching this from New Zealand 😭 The food looks amazing. Wanna try all the dishes. YUM.
God bless ya....you have no idea how much your diner is appreciated.
Amazing content guys
Kudos to the diner owner for his dedication to serving high-quality meals and services in this upload. I admire his chefs who humble themselves to preparing their fresh and homestyle meals urgently but deliciously. I wish this establishment is locating in my hometown, where diners are the epitome of eateries in New Jersey. We Jersians can appreciate having their professionalism and timely enthusiasm to serve around-the-clock meal entrees in our mediocre served diners.
Props for showing respect to the prep cooks and the station cooks who are pretty much always the unsung heroes of restaurants! I’m a Jersey boy so anything diner related I’m down for!
Great Chefs and very nice Owner! I will definitely eat here one day! Food looks amazing!
Incredible team at this diner. What a diverse and delicious looking menu.
Old John's is on my list of places to dine for my next trip to the city.
Mr. Palafox. Thank you and the outstanding diner staff for retaining a golden era of America alive and refreshed for the children to enjoy the wonderful memories of childhood. 😁

Food looks great!! Chefs are great!
There's alys something special. When it comes to a neighborhood restaurant. No matter how old it may be
Now I appreciate even more the people that work so hard so I can have a satisfying meal
I sincerely hope the owners and bosses appreciate the endless work that goes into their business
Thank you all for everything!!!
Such hardworking decent employees…..not so easy to find nowadays. All the food looks delish!
If you pay them right, the workers are pretty easy to find.
That’s some good cooking . Flavorsome.
Great video!
OUTSTANDING!!!
OMG that food looks so good
I wish we had diners like this in London. Don't get me wrong, I love our greasy spoon cafes but this food looks so much better.
Very enlightening. Hard working people
everything is fresh that’s refreshing
I miss living and working in NYC and NJ. The diners in those two 1:23 states are so good. I miss my over easy fried egg with ham on a fresh kaiser roll for my breakfast each morning!!! Yummy!!!
All of that food looked fire
I’m definitely visiting this place
The food is from the heart, love these family owned diners and they abound in India dishing out local delicacies, the chefs are basically multitaskers making a plethora of dishes working nonstop right from early in the morning till they close
This is a thing of Beauty, thank you.

Those short ribs and the apple cinnamon pancakes
Always enjoyed the diners, and this one looks excellent.
