    I got a dealer rental prius prime and it gets me 70MPG(on display) on average after my 40 mile test loop, highway, trafice jam, highway uphill, express way, local drive. The ride is soft but turn into a noisy box quickly at higher speed. Overall, I'm impressed.

      I have the Prius Prime Advanced and used the adaptive cruise control, letting the car come to a complete stop while slowing to enter rt. 90 (Mass Pike) from rt. 84 interchange. Never touched the brake. You need to press gas pedal again to get going, but slowing and even stopping completely without ever touching the brake is sweet!

    Excellent review. One minor criticism though, the computor almost always overstates fuel economy. My understanding is that this is about 4%. Still, this means you netted over 57 mpg, which is really good.

    • @anthonyc1883
      @anthonyc1883 5 лет назад +2

      Sillygoose41! Yes. The biggery battery, known as the "traction" battery or the EV battery, is the one that plugs in and the one that can tool your car around for 25 miles without the gasoline engine turning on.. The other battery pack is part of the regular hybrid system that works in tandem with the gas engine.

    • @Xboxjaypro3
      @Xboxjaypro3 5 лет назад +1

      A sales rep told me that it's just one battery with a little extra juice. Basically the last 20% of the battery can't put out enough power to be used in EV mode, so it's used with slower driving like a hybrid.

    On my '17 Prime I've found that after the EV battery is depleted, for speeds up to around 55mph, if you carefully let up off the accelerator pedal a bit, the car shift over to its Hybrid Battery (which is different than its EV battery), and the gas engine will cut off for fairly long distances, further increasing overall mileage.

      That’s what I started with when I began highway testing years ago and I’ve always stuck with it. State speed limit is 65 MPH. The faster you travel on the open road, the lower your MPGs.

  • @mpgundercover8075
    @mpgundercover8075 2 года назад

    I assume that you know that any "MPG" figure on a hybrid vehicle which is not achieved by first disabling the electric portion of the vehicle is absolutely untrue and inaccurate. The "Gallon" in "MPG" obviously applies to the gasoline used, since battery/electric power is not measured in gallons. For true MPG figures, one must run the vehicle on only the internal combustion engine.

    • @MylesV
      @MylesV 2 года назад

      Keep in mind most hybrids cannot receive grid power, the power in the battery comes from the gasoline engine and from regenerative braking. MPG calculations absolutely should include the "EV" driving in that case as long as it wasn't from grid power.
      The Prius Prime in the video is a PHEV but the creator mentioned in the video that he drained the battery to the point that the car entered charge sustain mode (AKA conventional hybrid mode) before the test.

      Matthew Bacchus EV battery was drained before hitting the highway, but not the Hybrid battery. It would be interesting to intentionally drain the hybrid battery completely before hitting the interstate. Could it catch up with regen while in Cruise on the long downhill stretches?

      @mb013962 6 лет назад +1

      I mean, there's probably a way to disconnect it...always wondered what type of mileage cars with a hybrid body style, but traditional powertrain, would get...I know some people were getting 25-35 mpg once their civic hybrid IMA batteries went bad

    • @mpgomatic
      @mpgomatic  6 лет назад +1

      Matthew Bacchus Got it! It’s not a Hybrid, but my 1999 Honda Civic HX has a high-efficiency Lean Burn engine. It’s been stuck in Limp Mode since late this spring. It usually averages around 40 MPG. It won’t rev past 3400 RPM or go into Lean Burn due to Limp Mode. Fuel economy has been cut in half while I chase down the gremlins. :(
      I’ve always wondered about the MPG possibilities of a turbodiesel engine in a highly aerodynamic body. I wanted to do a TD project for the longest time, but now I’m looking at doing something with a tiny turbo gas engine.

If they would just make that vehicle without all the added weight of the electric it would probably get 70 plus MPG with a heavy foot and even way more if driven carefully. Bottom line electric assist is a waste of money. The vehicle would be 10k to 15k cheaper if gas only and still get great MPG.
