The 10% increase in fuel consumption is valid at best when adding the electric range regenerated to the distance spent in CHG mode. I tried a flat portion of highway; regular hybrid gave 3.3l/%, while CHG mode gave 5.9l/%, almost double. For the 11.2km of highway, this was done in about 10min, for a battery refill of 14%. Based on rated 40km for full charge, that corresponds to 5.6km, or half the distance of the highway trip. If I am to spend this electric range in addition to the distance spent in CHG mode, my fuel consumption goes to 3.93l/%.
Battery charge (CHG mode) is done at a (more or less) constant rate per hour; in city driving, charging is faster per distance used, simply because it takes longer to go the same distance than on highway.
CHG mode was designed for when you are on the motorway/highway i.e. in cruise control for a distance. Designed to charge the battery for when you re-enter City areas again. You don't have to use it but it's real design is to stop you ever needing the Engine when in a City. Similar to Hold mode on a Volt/Ampera.
That's correct, but you can also use this option in the town, as you can see in my video
Thank you, really great information.
You're welcome 🙂😀
Very impressed
Thanks 👍
That works quite well.
Yeah really good
I am trying to decide if I should pull the pin on a new 2020 Prius Prime...they are not cheap (though there are some good deals) but from the times I have drove them they are pretty soothing in EV mode and all together extremely frugal...which offsets the price a bit. Your videos have helped me out...
Thanks again 👍
What about switching from ev mode to hv mode when battery gets low
It's automatically happening , you don't need to do anything. It's very clever system.
So if you start your 100miles trip with an empty battery, what will be MPG then?
Around 70 if you will be using only hybrid mode without "extra" battery.
