I have had sports bike and gone fast because the way they rev, sound and feel. I have a gen 2 Prius and drive slow because of the way it is. Non manual, light steering, heavy and a screen that shows when you're using battery, charging it etc and the mpg I feel that it's all psychological to get the best mpg. I drive 78 miles to work and back a day so fuel economy, comfort and reliability was important to me. Also its quite a spacious car and practical for when I air bnb or need to buy something large like a cupboard. They aren't fun but definitely useful
If people behind you aren't honking and flipping you off then you aren't driving your Prius correctly. IDGAF I'll drive like a grandma to save a little gas money.
This is awesome, the Prius 2016 is a gas sipper! I drive 11 miles to work one way on Eco mode (Prius two) with 8 of those miles on the highway btw 55-65 mph in CA and Using these methods I can average 75-90 mpg per trip without thinking too much! It really becomes second nature after a month or two of practice. Thank you!
+Tanatose YOU would save more money keeping the car you have (and driving more slowly). Even in my company's brick-shaped giant SUV the fuel economy rises to 40 mpg if I drive slow .
***** At the moment, I'm driving a 5-speed 2008 Focus for commuting, which gets 35 MPG, but I've decided I want an automatic for that job, and the new Prius looks like a solid choice. I already have a 6-speed RX-8, so I figure it won't kill me.
I'm also a car enthusiast here. Yes the Prius isn't a good car in terms of driving dynamics, but its efficiency in gas use is unparalleled. Every single time I drive a gas car and I hit the brake or idle in rush hour traffic I keep thinking "how great this would be if I was in a hybrid". Having the ability to reuse wasted braking energy is something I envy in hybrids, and while that won't change my perception of the Prius, I do respect it's technology & engineering.
My 07 Prius is getting 47mpg @ 200k miles, I think a 2016 will be my next vehicle. That is if my 07 ever kills over, which I don't forsee happening. Those Japanese know how to build a car.
Being honest, hypermiling excites me to no end. I see money in the bank. Really scared I might get shot for it one day, but I like to live on the edge.
+Deanie Baby The 2016 is a big step up over the previous model and I'll bet there are some great deals out there right now. How many miles/trips do you roll up every day?
+pedrof830 IN my car people routinely make rude gestures at me, which makes no sense. The CA highways are 10 lanes wide, and I'm in the right slow lane where I belong. Just Pass me instead of giving me the finger (which I will happily give right back) .
electrictroy2010 They do that to me all the time, yet I see certain minorities on the left lane of I-95 doing less than the speed limit. I don't get it
i like that it looks like they made the trigger between battery to gas more lenient than the 2015 an previous where once you crest that mid-line it kicks in but its still super fun. only thing i wish is i had more hills, its mostly flat land in FL so my only regen spots are braking or flat coasting, but sitting in traffic or anything else is where it really shines cause you're not wasting gas.
I was just thinking that I hadn't seen you in an "MPGOmatic" video in a while. Glad to see your still doing them. I've watched the "Prius C" video you referred to at least four times. Great to see the new car beat that score. Keep it up Dan.
Cool. I enjoyed the orginal one in the Prius C and I was interested to see this one in the new Prius. It would be interesting to see the exact same route done in that same 2016 Prius, but with some variants. Eg: Do it one time - sticking to the speed limits - but trying to drive as inefficiently as possible, to see how the Prius is under those circumstances. And a halo run at night when there is no other traffic on the roads, tyres overinflated, no aircon or heater on, nearly empty fuel tank, all excess fuel removed, moderately cool temperature outside, etc... Everything being done to get the "ideal" economy run. So opposite extremes, but in the same car on the same route to see absolute best vs worst case scenarios with everything else being equal.
I've been hypermiling for so long that it's natural. I have a 2018 yaris IA with a manual and regularly hit 60mpg doing 60 on the highway, with lots of coasting to stoplights in the city. So killer.
I know this vid is from 2016, however after a LOOOOOOOOOOT of research over the years, we finally decided on a Prius. Low & behold we got of all things a 2016 Prius Four model with just 17,5XX miles on it. qualified as a Toyota Certified Pre-Owned so comes with the 100,000 mile battery & powertrain warranty. ;-) Anywhooooo, it was hard for me to believe all the hype about high fuel mileage numbers. But, WOW, they are TRUE. IN TOWN it is quite easy to break the 70 MPG mark CONSISTANTLY. Now, get it out on the Interstate...………..then it bombs. A "sucky" 43 MPG @ 78 MPH. HA! The last 45 miles of normal daily routine running errands and what not it is kinda stuck in the 58 to 63 MPG range. I will take that! Years of watching your shows has helped me not only be a more miserly driver, you have quite literally saved me money in the end! I want to give you my greatest THANKS for all you have done for folks like us and the You Tube community. One question because I have forgotten, is it better to use standard cheap gas, or go for the top level premium fuel? Thanks again Dan!
COYOTE ADVENTURES Many thanks for the kind words and congrats on the thrifty new ride! There’s no need to use premium gasoline in a Prius … 87 octane regular from a reputable brand will do. :)
I've always enjoyed fast cars but finding an open, winding road without traffic to enjoy the speed and handling is always a challenge (and not the fun kind). Hypermiling a Prius gives me the chance to enjoy the challenge of achieving best fuel economy on any road in any condition.
Driving a Prius shows you how much engine use is wasted in a normal car, particularly at low speeds. It's all about minimizing how much time the engine is on.
MPG depends on route and how you drive it. my 2013 sometimes makes above 70 depending on route, but overall, the average MPG per tank is 54-55 and in cold cold winter it is 48-50.
Hello dan can you please do this test again as when you started you had 5 bars on the battery but when you finish you only have 2 bars I would like to know the true mpg so can you please start and finish with the same battery level. .... plus I guess you would have to start and finish at the same altitude that might be harder to do. ... I like you are doing the test on normal roads. ...... have you done any tests on the high speed roads 70 mph..... cheers dan
raptor pome It's tough to start and end with the same battery level. It would take a lot of regeneration to make it happen. I can't redo this test with this specific car - all of my test vehicles come from the manufacturer media fleets. I do highway testing with a target speed of 68 MPH. The state limit in NJ is 65.
I got the brand new Toyota C-HR Hybrid (same hybrid system and platform as in the new Prius) and i can easly drive it up to 75-80 mpg in cold weater (like 14 ˚F) on studded winter tyres 225-60-18 (live in Iceland). The C-HR is awesome like the new Prius, but i got the C-HR because it got more groundclear (9 inces) and exellent in snow. Great job Toyota.
I lease the 2015 Prius and in the summertime at least 55 miles that's Highway and City. When I drive to my neighborhood I'm always on EV mode. Thanks for the video it helps out. But I'm going to buy the 2017 Prius Prime which you can do up to 28 miles on EV mode before the engine cuts in. It gets it 685 total range so basically I can drive from Syracuse New York to New York City and back and still have gas left over. We Prius drivers don't drive slow we drive conservatively.
This is so powerful. Thanks for sharing this video. Through watching your video, I finally understand how the Prius achieves such great gas mileage. Thanks again for sharing.
I have a 2008 with 310,000 miles on it. West Texas.. all the roads are 45mph.. except downtown. Highways are 60 in the city and 80+ between cities . I tent to surge and coast mostly.. and I tend to max the Regen coming up to lights... But not enough to inconvenience other drivers. I almost always out accelerate other cars at lights.. surge to the speed limit. And coast. I tend to average 45-50mpg. Open highway at 85mph I get 38-40. 75mph I get 42mpg. 55mph I get 55-60mpg. Great cars.. Also keep in mind the engine can run for a variety of reasons. To keep coolant or catalytic converter temp at a set point. Cabin heat if turned on.. sometimes.. can run if you did a lot of Regen down a big hill, to burn of extra power it has no place to put ..
Love your videos with the Prius C and this Prius Dan !! Very well done !! I will definitely will be considering buying an Hybrid car next time... I was just wondering if you are thinking about doing the same route with the New 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid soon ?
Mario Roussel Many thanks, Mario! I will be swapping into the Hyundai Ioniq on Wednesday. I’ve been looking forward to this one for quite some time. I tested the Kia Niro earlier this summer and it turned in some impressive numbers.
my best so far is 101 mpg on an 6.8 mile trip in traffic. i think the next closes run was 84 mpg on a 16 mile run. extremely happy with how well this vehicle can save.
Most of your fuel savings is from the way you drive. Too many people don't realise how much fuel they could save by coasting more into corners and stops......every time you use the brake, it's wasted fuel.
This always happens when you reset your tripometer. Especially after filling the tank. I gas up at our local Sam's Club gas station, which is 12.7 miles away. I then take local streets and lone highways home instead of the Interstate, trying to avoid traffic so I can avg 40 MPH. Here's the key: USE CRUISE CONTROL WHENEVER POSSIBLE, all the time if you can. By doing this, you're letting the hybrid system DO ITS BEST. I average anywhere between 70-90 MPG in the 12.7 mile journey home!
Thank you for showing what's possible when you try and stay in EV rather than pulsing and gliding on gas and zero power. Those people piss me off when they say 65mpg with pulse and glide driving it like a gas only car. Thanks
Hi! my experience is how to get excellent mpg results from my prius plus is don`t need to be very gentle and crawling on acceleration like a turtle. For the first few metres be gentle with the accelerator use the battery to get the car moving and then use the petrol engine to get to speed while the motor charge the battery then on the speed limit release the accelerator completely so the engine could switch off and then keep your speed only using the battery with gentle acceleration but the next point is important before you need to stop anywhere like plan forward 200 metres and then need to stop example just get off the accelerator an let the car slow then itself because this will charge back your battery quickly and of course if you need to completely stop use your brakes. My Prius plus gets 55mpg on the long term because of motorway miles but in the city computer shows around 60-70 mpg.
Great video thanks for the upload and information. I'm thinking about Kia niro, Toyota chr. Or Prius. What's the car like on the freeway? Do you get a lot of noise coming thru to the cabin?
Mr A - The latest generation Prius is a big step up over the previous model. You should drive it back to back with the Niro, if possible. They’re both solid efficient cars. You’ll want to include some highway driving. I don’t recall either ad being exceptionally loud at speed. The CH-R is a different animal.
Glad I found your Video helps on driving your Prius. I have a 2016 "C". I have been trying technics to help Improve my mileage. I live in an area that is mixed hills, mountains and flat areas. Summer gas averages 58 to 61 mpg at fill up. My best fill up was 66.6 mpg! Longest distance traveled was 510 miles on 8.5 gallons of gas! I hope with your suggestions that I will improve on my mileage! Thanks!
Cool video, well done! I like to drive efficiently as well. But I have gone back to normal driving by focusing on safety instead of MPG. There were a few reasons I stopped doing the hyper milling (for fun): 1) I like to see the actual numbers to get the sense of instant satisfaction. However, with a long term calculation of MPG, I found most car's display of MPG numbers are inaccurate (inflated). So at least I know that these numbers are not that meaningful. 2) I have driven Prius and watched its MPG all the time. However, here is the biggest fallacy that most drivers overlooked. On a hybrid car, it uses both gasoline and battery power. So when you do an MPG test on a short run, you need to take in the consideration the amount of gas and battery power to begin with. The car in this video started with more battery juice than at the end. This means that some previously stored energy was not taken into account when calculating the MPG number. Again, it is not that meaningful. 3) Where you reset the MPG counter is also important. To get a real consumption, it should be reset at the same point where the car returns, at the same speed. I can reset the counter on my V8 car at a cruising speed and get over 50+ MPG. These said, to get a valid fuel consumption, we need to understand all the parameters and taken all of them into account. I can do it. But I grew tired of it after I found that my annual fuel cost (10k miles) is only gonna be 1/3 of the cost of registration and insurance. Why bother trying to beat the EPA numbers? Sadly, we are not gaining much here.
Many thanks for the kind words and insight, +Gold Cloud! I don't consider myself to be a hypermiler. I enjoy stomping on the pedal more than squeaking the most miles out of every gallon. :) But the more I can squeak, the less impact those stomps have on overall MPGs - it's similar in effect to what NASCAR drivers do to conserve fuel in a race. One less pit stop can make a difference. Same goes for folks on a tight budget. I've tested a different car every week for years now - mostly to produce conventional reviews for the Autobytel channel these days. Occasionally, I have the time/opportunity to do MPG-focused videos for this channel. I highway/MPG tested the Mustang GT and Corvette last year. While the highway numbers were impressive, they were nowhere near 50 MPG. But they could be if the cars had better aerodynamics.
I have the Prius Two Eco. It is an amazingly fuel efficient car. I "could" get in the 80's if there were no traffic and I could just take my time. I normally get in the low 60's for a normal week. If you drive a ton on the interstate, it will be pulled down into the mid 50's.
Always great to watch! Quality of interior etc ? Compare to 2016 volt?I heard the ride quality is light years ahead....keep em coming btw the camera's where fine!
Many thanks, Jeff! Huge improvements in the 2016 Prius' ride, handling and interior. Yuuuuuge. I dig the Volt all around, but that back seat is still tight.
using the brake is typically more effective. Using 'B' has a tendency to wind up the engine for engine braking. That's fine if it's a long, steep hill and you don't think you can regenerative brake effectively anyway but otherwise no. I drive down a pretty steep hill but it's like at most a 1/4 mile and the best usage is to just ride the brakes and not to exceed approx 25mph. Pick up too much speed and the battery can't charge it fast enough when you get to the point where you need to slow down to a safe speed. Pick a speed that's safe for the road and ride the brakes to maintain that speed.
Great video - but a bit unsure why you gun it into the power band when using the engine. In my Yaris (same drivetrain as the Prius C I think), the power band uses both engine and battery so the charge goes down.
So....the dash read outs in my Volt and 2016 Civic Hybrid is one thing. I tend to do the tried and true whole tank fill up gallons used by miles driven to get the real mileage. Have you done that?
I like to do tank tests when possible. Sadly, the reality of tight time frames and nonexistent budgets these days make it tough to do. Adblockers and severely slashed ad revenues have a huge impact on the ability to do deep coverage. How far off are the onboard systems on your Volt and Civic?
+MPGomatic SO adblockers are lowering your youtube income? I have been telling people for years to stop using adblocker, as they are killing-off the videos they love to watch . I suspect that's why Hulu no longer shows videos for free (some but very little). Adblockers made Free Hulu impossible to continue .
+MPGomatic WELL they could delete the ads & start charging subscription fees. However if youtube starts charging like hulu, then I will just stop using both. Money comes from work, and I hate work, so I spend as little money/work as possible ;-) .
Very good MPG but it is on a very unique terrain, I have averaged on a 65 miles trip with 3 heavy adults in the car and about 50 lbs of cargo on my 2016 C-Max Hybrid and on normal roads with way less coasting down hills averaging between 45 & 55 miles per hour. 3.4 Liters / 100 km into Miles / Gallon (US) Result: 69.180759792574 A 30 miles trip with around 500+ Lbs of passenger and cargo weight in the city of Toronto resulted in : 1.9 Liters / 100 km into Miles / Gallon (US) Result: 123.7971491025 At the end is all how we drive the vehicle, one thing that I love about the C-Max vs the Prius is the power and coasting down hill I do not have to touch the brakes to regenerate power to the batteries, it has a logic grade mode that upon activation will use more of the holding power of the engine to generate more power for the battery and it is also a more quiet ride.
I was definitely working it, +pedrof830. Under normal conditions, it will hit/exceed the official numbers - unless it's c-c-c-cold and the trip is short.
MPGomatic I just wonder as the price of gas keeps going down. if the demand for these types of cars will diminish, too bad since both Prius and Volt are new and much better than before.
pedrof830 It's definitely put a damper on sales. But gas is about as cheap as it's gunna get right now. The industry will get the prices back up, through whatever means necessary.
+electrictroy2010 Thanks for the feedback! The opening sequence is stereo with a shotgun mic on the right channel and an internal camera mic on the left channel - this can be an issue with Windows laptops (and I avoid using this setup). The bulk of the video used a lav mic set to mono on both channels-I've been doubling up with that approach for the most part. It's not quiet on an iPhone or a MacBookPro. I need to check from an Android device. I don't own a modern PC.
+MPGomatic YOUR speed was soooo slow. At that speed the Honda Insight is still the champ. I get over 110 mpg (thanks to the tiny 1.0 engine). In California there is a Prius on every corner. You cannot escape them .
+toyotaprius79 My 10 year old Vauxhall / Opel Astra Diesel shows instantantaneous MPG up to 999.9 (which it shows with fuel cut off on the overun); it frequently shows over 100 MPG on slight downgrades on the motorway. Not comparable to the Prius otherwise though.
Road trip! Would love to see a ride on the 571 locals route to Seaside Heights, head on Washington road to Princeton Jct, follow Princeton Hightstown Road to Hightstown follow the signs to 571, there's an abrupt right turn a lot of people miss, but loved driving it, better than Rte 9, takes you to main road going through bridge on Seaside heights. Get your average, and a day at the beach, it's a win/win!
Few things I want to know about 2016 Prius Two: How to adjust the height the trunk opening How to setup the messages over iPhone How to turn off the backup/reverse sound alert How to setup with any temperature and preference for AUTO temp
You will see a difference, but not enough to not have a spare tire, and the newer batteries, included in all trims but the Prius Two, is awful in the cold. If you live in a city, that's not cold and can have a tow truck come and get you for a simple flat, then the Eco is for you
I have my 2016 4 touring for only 3 days. I can't find the trip or display buttons that will give me that same screen. Can anyone prompt me? The trip button?
Would love you to do a run in the Lexus 200h. I just got a 2013 model and it seems difficult to get it over the high 40s. Could be location though as I have a lot of hills. It's funny, I complain about my hills zapping my performance and people in FL complain about their flat runs. There must be an ideal location and you seem to have it!
I have 1k miles on mine (since I bought it at 13,5k) I am currently running 49.9 mpg in the hills of Austin on the current tank. Trying to at least break 50. But I want to see Prius style MPGs!!! It seems like Lexus removed everything that suggests a MONEY SAVING vehicle. The 5 minute bars top out at 60 MPG but the Instant mpg bar tops out at 90. I can get that display to 90 both below 42 mph (in electric mode - easy) and quite often above 42 mph (by accelerating and coasting with my foot "feathering" the accelerator). But there is no CURRENT bar on the 5 minute display and the MPG on the mini dash display seems to be an average since the last fuel refill rather than the last 10 seconds or current journey as it seems to be on the Prius. Mine is a 2013 Lexus 200h
+TheTunneys My apologies if I misread your post but I'd be interested to know what your mpg is when calculated by hand to compare to your dash readouts. my 2011 Prius typically shows dash readouts that are 3-4mpg higher than real world numbers. I still avg 48-50mpg per tank. Also, although the Prius & 200h share drivetrains, I think they're tuned slightly differently, which results in slightly lower fuel economy for the Lexus. I believe it may also be related to the different tranissions used.
+Erik Crossley Yes, 2-3 mpg more reported on the dash than the real measurements of mileage/gallons. Suggest you look at fuelly.com as it will probably answer all your questions. Half way through tank #3 and currently 57.7 mpg - 75% highway 25% urban, lots of traffic, lots of jams, lots of hills and lots of lights but that's Austin for you. 200h is 100lbs heavier and has a worse drag coefficient than the Prius (0.29 vs 0.26) . The 200h has the 1.8L version of the Prius engine but I think it is the less aerodynamic shape and the luxury interior that causes the majority of the mpg reduction. It certainly is as slow to 60 as the Prius (over 10 seconds).
I would love to see that too. The CT200h seems like a bad car as it is slower & less efficient than the Prius. However drive a longer distance and the improved interior, seats and sound deadening means the Lexus is a much better companion in the long haul. After all, a car is more than just about MPGs, not to mention the CT200h has a better ride & more willing chassis setup over the single eco-minded Prius.
Thank you for helping me drive better in my 2015 Prius. Also reminds me of home back east, in fact it is New Jersey, just recognized a few streets! Update, I'm from Princeton, lol how funny is that not changed too much. However I'm not a fan of the 2016 for a few reasons: 1)Less cup holders, 2015 you can fit 8, 2016 only 6 (nitpicking here though) 2)No split glove compartment, loved the top for glasses, sunscreen lotion, etc 3)Toyota no longer offering Solar Panel based cooling with the Sun Roof option 4)Rear looks a bit like a Ford and not in a good way 5)Miss the Star Trek console, shift is now a bit awkward 6)Odd mid console flip, seems like you get less storage space in there. I think I'll keep my 2015 for a while. Though I will say the 2016 it's got a better quality interior and I'm told the new Prius rattles less.
They get good fuel mileage 53 mpg for normal driving but 80? Maybe coasting downhill from pikes peak with wind to your back and boulders in the trunk... 🙄 .. sounds really exaggerated.. best milage I get is 53. No more no less..
Choice777 it's a display option. You have to scroll over to display while stopped. Then scroll through options u can choose to remove the trip info, add or remove the mpg and that throttle meter
MPGomatic the thing is if people drove lighter cars the roads wouldn't take as much abuse. I'm not disagreeing with you, but I think it's time for tax rebates given to people who drive economy cars, hybrid or not. Or if we are eventually taxed, it should be a tiered system where lighter weight vehicles pay less compared to SUV's.
Jack Jones Additional rebates won't happen any time in the near future. Folks that drive fuel efficient vehicles pay less tax per mile than SUV drivers as it is now.
That will be the day I leave this shit country. The pothole/road excuse just doesnt work for me. The govt wastes billions of tax dollars on absolute horseshit. I encourage you to see where our tax dollars go. Things like roads and filled potholes and MUCH more should be covered by the sales tax of all of our general purchases.
I only get 40 mpg consistantly with my 2016 Prius I just baught. How much do the tires and wheels affect the mpg? Anyone have data? I have factory 17 inch wheels and off brand tires. Wish I could get 80!
I wish this had the Leaf's e petal or whatever it is where it turns a heavy regen on when you just let off the gas. I have a feeling when you are dragging on the regen brakes its flashing the brake lights on and that is obnoxious to people behind you
What is the average mpg of 4th gen Prius doing constant 75mph on highways in warm ideal weather such as South Cali? I'm looking at the Prius 4 with the 15" wheels.
If people behind you aren't honking and flipping you off then you aren't driving your Prius correctly. IDGAF I'll drive like a grandma to save a little gas money.
Can you please drive on the freeway with the 2016 Prius? I want to see what numbers you get when you have to speed up to keep up with traffic as well as going speeds above city speed limits
Great job. I'm waiting to hear from vw and what they're going to do about my diesel before I go out and purchase my Prius. Would you recommend the 2 Eco or is that overkill?
What I don't understand is why they aren't ALL plug-in hybrids? Is the charger and slightly larger pack the only difference, and if so, are they really so much more expensive? To me it seems that an un-plug-in hybrid is really only something that manages to get a little more efficiency from gasoline, while a plug-in could potentially destroy your fuel bill entirely - but allow you to travel further if you need to.
I have the exact same model, I'm the 1st owner, the car now has over 141k kms, I just noticed today the mpg doesn't go down less than 58 anymore. It just stays there. Does anyone know why? I used to be able to do 1.9L/100km
+physics Nice! I had an Accord Hybrid in February 2014, but the weather was tough on the week that I tested. If I recall correctly, it was one of those Snowmageddon weeks. I'd like to test it again under better conditions.
Hi, any plans of testing the RAV4 Hybrid? I don't know if you have it in the States, but here in Europe it produces 197 hp in total. Same hybrid line like in the Lexus NX 300h. I've read some European reviews and they are all complaining about the high consumption, but their way of driving could of course be the reason.
I drove the RAV4 Hybrid for one day last fall at a Toyota event. It hit the numbers in that limited time behind the wheel. There are so many variables with fuel economy, but the biggest one is usually the driver.
Now I understand why Prius drivers drive the way they do.
Like grandmas do. LOL
I drive like a grandma anyway, I should probably get a Prius.
@@UnseenSpirit move closer to work, holy ff
This is awesome, the Prius 2016 is a gas sipper! I drive 11 miles to work one way on Eco mode (Prius two) with 8 of those miles on the highway btw 55-65 mph in CA and Using these methods I can average 75-90 mpg per trip without thinking too much! It really becomes second nature after a month or two of practice. Thank you!
I'm a pretty hardcore car enthusiast, but I would consider buying one of these for commuting.
+Tanatose YOU would save more money keeping the car you have (and driving more slowly). Even in my company's brick-shaped giant SUV the fuel economy rises to 40 mpg if I drive slow
.
+electrictroy2010 lemme guess, 2010 escape?
***** At the moment, I'm driving a 5-speed 2008 Focus for commuting, which gets 35 MPG, but I've decided I want an automatic for that job, and the new Prius looks like a solid choice. I already have a 6-speed RX-8, so I figure it won't kill me.
+electrictroy2010 except in real life you can't drive slowly ALL the time
I'm also a car enthusiast here.
I have found the perfect car in the new Prius. I am willing to drive like a 90 year old man to get an extra few mpg out it too. :)
My 07 Prius is getting 47mpg @ 200k miles, I think a 2016 will be my next vehicle. That is if my 07 ever kills over, which I don't forsee happening. Those Japanese know how to build a car.
Any updates??
yes, the 07 Prius has been modified into a StarShip Rocket and is currently in orbit@@camposvazquez
He's a typical Prius driver but tbh I want a Prius bc of fabulous gas mileage
Being honest, hypermiling excites me to no end. I see money in the bank. Really scared I might get shot for it one day, but I like to live on the edge.
I bought this 2016 prius just to uber it. Full tank of gas is usually between $30-40 and it lasts me a week to 9 days with driving all day everyday
Very cool. I've been thinking about driving for Uber or Lyft.
its one of the ideal cars for uber
+Deanie Baby The 2016 is a big step up over the previous model and I'll bet there are some great deals out there right now. How many miles/trips do you roll up every day?
100 to over 200 kms a day. Im in canada. Just ev it all the time lol = free gas
+Deanie Baby Nice! It's all about the glide … =)
Dan, if I drove like that in So Fl. I'd get rear-ended or shot, not in that order.
+pedrof830 I drive over the limit most of the time and avoid holding any one up. Too many people are in a hurry to go nowhere … =)
+MPGomatic That is one thing I laugh at when I see them rushing to the next red light and then slamming on the brakes. Then they do it all over again.
+pedrof830 IN my car people routinely make rude gestures at me, which makes no sense. The CA highways are 10 lanes wide, and I'm in the right slow lane where I belong. Just Pass me instead of giving me the finger (which I will happily give right back)
.
Mixtapes from Titan
Why do you say that?
electrictroy2010
They do that to me all the time, yet I see certain minorities on the left lane of I-95 doing less than the speed limit. I don't get it
I’ve always enjoyed this video and rewatch it periodically. It got me to upgrade some a 2014 Prius 2 to a 2017 Prius 4. Still getting 58-70 MPG.
i like that it looks like they made the trigger between battery to gas more lenient than the 2015 an previous where once you crest that mid-line it kicks in but its still super fun.
only thing i wish is i had more hills, its mostly flat land in FL so my only regen spots are braking or flat coasting, but sitting in traffic or anything else is where it really shines cause you're not wasting gas.
I dig your comment about the garage facing the street. I hadn't considered that
I was just thinking that I hadn't seen you in an "MPGOmatic" video in a while. Glad to see your still doing them. I've watched the "Prius C" video you referred to at least four times. Great to see the new car beat that score. Keep it up Dan.
Many thanks for the kind words and encouragement, +ridgview! I will be doing more videos in this format in the coming months. Stay Tuned …
I appreciate the video MPGOmatic! Been following your videos and the car and glad you did one on this generation prius.
Many thanks for the kind words, +Robert Snyder!
I love trying to hypermile. I think it's fun.
I do it all the time and I don’t even have a hybrid
@@mrbigbigtoe Same here. 55mpg so far
Low & behold we got of all things a 2016 Prius Four model with just 17,5XX miles on it. qualified as a Toyota Certified Pre-Owned so comes with the 100,000 mile battery & powertrain warranty. ;-)
Anywhooooo, it was hard for me to believe all the hype about high fuel mileage numbers.
@@mpgomatic good to know! 😎👊👊
I have a Prius on order 2016 3 Touring, hope i get very good mileage on it! Thanks for the film !
MPG depends on route and how you drive it. my 2013 sometimes makes above 70 depending on route, but overall, the average MPG per tank is 54-55 and in cold cold winter it is 48-50.
+NoShadowOfDoubt1 Great stuff! It's all about how, when, and where you drive it.
+NoShadowOfDoubt1 That's a heck of a balance. 👍
Nice drive and it looks like it's in the cold as well! Great MPG
Thanks, +Driving Burntwood! It was balmy compared to today. It's 4º this morning… =O
Hello dan
can you please do this test again as when you started you had 5 bars on the battery but when you finish you only have 2 bars I would like to know the true mpg so can you please start and finish with the same battery level. .... plus I guess you would have to start and finish at the same altitude that might be harder to do.
I love your orca moon seats!!!
+Páll Sigurðsson Nice! Hope we get the C-HR Hybrid here in the States, soon.
All these years later, this video is still ASMR-like to me.
Many thanks, Leslie!
Hottest year on record . Keep up the good work please !!!!
I tested the Kia Niro earlier this summer and it turned in some impressive numbers.
my best so far is 101 mpg on an 6.8 mile trip in traffic. i think the next closes run was 84 mpg on a 16 mile run. extremely happy with how well this vehicle can save.
imgur.com/a/Q3KlD
Most of your fuel savings is from the way you drive. Too many people don't realise how much fuel they could save by coasting more into corners and stops......every time you use the brake, it's wasted fuel.
Man. I want to see what you can do with my 2018 Honda Accord hybrid. Supposed to get 47/47
I just got my 2019 insight. Love the car, got 58 MPG before watching this video. Lots of freeway driving.
I've been happy with my 44 MPG stomping on my 2019 AWD Prius haha. Maybe one fill up I'll try to hypermile. Great video though!
I’ve gotten 65 quite a few times on my AWD in the winter. You can do it!
Thank you for showing what's possible when you try and stay in EV rather than pulsing and gliding on gas and zero power. Those people piss me off when they say 65mpg with pulse and glide driving it like a gas only car. Thanks
Your videos are very through. Thanks! I enjoyed it greatly
+Showerlady Thanks for the kind words! =)
Best I ever did on a "50 miles out, 50 miles back" loop on the interstate (at 64mph) was 81mpg
Hi! my experience is how to get excellent mpg results from my prius plus is don`t need to be very gentle and crawling on acceleration like a turtle.
Great stuff!
If I saw 30 mpg on my Nav I would be happy as hell. Here he is getting 80 something average.
Thanks!
Grea video man. Could you upload a video on gen 3 Prius please?
NICE DRIVE
Cool video, well done!
I like to drive efficiently as well. But I have gone back to normal driving by focusing on safety instead of MPG.
There were a few reasons I stopped doing the hyper milling (for fun):
1) I like to see the actual numbers to get the sense of instant satisfaction.
My wife says you're driving her crazy with the hyper-miling. I think it's great. Maybe I'm a little ocd about high mpg. 😁
Frank FFF All Good! 🤪
Always great to watch! Quality of interior etc ? Compare to 2016 volt?I heard the ride quality is light years ahead....keep em coming btw the camera's where fine!
Many thanks, Jeff! Huge improvements in the 2016 Prius' ride, handling and interior. Yuuuuuge. I dig the Volt all around, but that back seat is still tight.
keep looking out for somebody behind me but will never have to worry about the "POPO" in front for speed trap lol
I think it's worth using 'B' mode of the transmission if you wanna work it in while downhill.
using the brake is typically more effective.
+David Ellis I'm just sloppy that way … =)
Nice drive and mpg. Also, I had problems sleeping till I saw your video. Thanks!
Cheaper than Ambien!
Man you are totally geeked out on your Pirus but I'm ok with that :)
+BlueBaron3x7 😁
Nice result. Could you confirm the AMSL at the start point and the end of the test?
So....the dash read outs in my Volt and 2016 Civic Hybrid is one thing. I tend to do the tried and true whole tank fill up gallons used by miles driven to get the real mileage. Have you done that?
I like to do tank tests when possible. Sadly, the reality of tight time frames and nonexistent budgets these days make it tough to do. Adblockers and severely slashed ad revenues have a huge impact on the ability to do deep coverage. How far off are the onboard systems on your Volt and Civic?
+MPGomatic SO adblockers are lowering your youtube income? I have been telling people for years to stop using adblocker, as they are killing-off the videos they love to watch
.
I suspect that's why Hulu no longer shows videos for free (some but very little). Adblockers made Free Hulu impossible to continue
.
electrictroy2010 Adblockers lower revenues for all web publishers. I'm not crazy about ads either. There's gotta be a better way.
+MPGomatic WELL they could delete the ads & start charging subscription fees. However if youtube starts charging like hulu, then I will just stop using both. Money comes from work, and I hate work, so I spend as little money/work as possible ;-)
.
+electrictroy2010 Have you checked out RUclipsRed? No ads. Subscription based.
Not sure if it was mentioned, but what is the change in elevation between starting point and end point?
Not sure, but I can check at some point in the next week or so.
3.4 Liters / 100 km into Miles / Gallon (US) Result: 69.180759792574
A 30 miles trip with around 500+ Lbs of passenger and cargo weight in the city of Toronto resulted in :
1.9 Liters / 100 km into Miles / Gallon (US) Result: 123.7971491025
At the end is all how we drive the vehicle, one thing that I love about the C-Max vs the Prius is the power and coasting down hill I do not have to touch the brakes to regenerate power to the batteries, it has a logic grade mode that upon activation will use more of the holding power of the engine to generate more power for the battery and it is also a more quiet ride.
+ELHemi440 Awesome numbers with the C-Max! It's a cool car.
Seems to me you were hypermiling, wonder how much mileage you can get in real world driving.
I was definitely working it, +pedrof830. Under normal conditions, it will hit/exceed the official numbers - unless it's c-c-c-cold and the trip is short.
MPGomatic
I just wonder as the price of gas keeps going down. if the demand for these types of cars will diminish, too bad since both Prius and Volt are new and much better than before.
pedrof830 It's definitely put a damper on sales. But gas is about as cheap as it's gunna get right now. The industry will get the prices back up, through whatever means necessary.
+MPGomatic All it takes is one minor little crisis in the Middle East and there goes the price of crude up up up
pedrof830 Yup Yup Yup!
This is a really nice city I wonder where this is!
Great video is there a similar video for 2015 Prius?
Exactly the same
I was surprised they let the MPG read go pas 99.9!
+toyotaprius79 It's capable of that … and more …
+electrictroy2010 Thanks for the feedback!
You cannot escape them
.
+electrictroy2010 The original Insight is awesome. It's crazy/sad that Honda stopped building them. Hoping I get the chance to drive one, one day …
+toyotaprius79 My 10 year old Vauxhall / Opel Astra Diesel shows instantantaneous MPG up to 999.9 (which it shows with fuel cut off on the overun); it frequently shows over 100 MPG on slight downgrades on the motorway. Not comparable to the Prius otherwise though.
I get my yards hybrid soon hope for same results I'm never in a hurry but disabled so need economy to save ythe penny's? great video :-)
That one brings back the memories. Did it a lot, back in the day. I test on 539 whenever I can. Nice long stretches with no traffic lights.
Few things I want to know about 2016 Prius Two:
How to adjust the height the trunk opening How to setup the messages over iPhone
How to turn off the backup/reverse sound alert
How to setup with any temperature and preference
for AUTO temp
Crack open the manual?
i did.. but found nothing, butt
the manual says that you should slowly release the acceleration pedal to recharge the battery
And that's in the winter too with snow all around
this guy seems like the cool uncle
I wanna see what the eco can do!
Yeah! I've done it myself!!!
+TheTunneys I have over 40K miles in mine and my average is 44.4
I have 1k miles on mine (since I bought it at 13,5k) I am currently running 49.9 mpg in the hills of Austin on the current tank.
Put it in Neutral, while the engine is off, it runs further ;)
Thank you for helping me drive better in my 2015 Prius. Also reminds me of home back east, in fact it is New Jersey, just recognized a few streets! Update, I'm from Princeton, lol how funny is that not changed too much.
However I'm not a fan of the 2016 for a few reasons:
1)Less cup holders, 2015 you can fit 8, 2016 only 6 (nitpicking here though)
2)No split glove compartment, loved the top for glasses, sunscreen lotion, etc
3)Toyota no longer offering Solar Panel based cooling with the Sun Roof option
4)Rear looks a bit like a Ford and not in a good way
5)Miss the Star Trek console, shift is now a bit awkward
6)Odd mid console flip, seems like you get less storage space in there.
I think I'll keep my 2015 for a while. Though I will say the 2016 it's got a better quality interior and I'm told the new Prius rattles less.
+TechGently "Only 6" cupholders how many different drinks do you have? XD
+Rennie Ash lol I'm a cup holder freak I have 2 bottles of water on each door and guests have their drinks. I know I know...I'm nutty
Its possible to get 1300 miles on this car on a full tank. Damn!
Very nice
Thanks, +Fabian Valdovinos!
What was the tire psi and what would u recommend
25 minutes drive, 10 miles, 88 mpg
Average speed 35 it's okay
They get good fuel mileage 53 mpg for normal driving but 80? Maybe coasting downhill from pikes peak with wind to your back and boulders in the trunk... 🙄 .. sounds really exaggerated.. best milage I get is 53. No more no less..
John W 👍🏻 Visiting Pikes Peak was Bucket List for me. It would be a hoot to try the downhill run in a Prius. I’d aim for 888 MPG. 🤣
best cars ever
how do i get that tiny acceleration meter next to the speed indicator? i only get the curved acceleration meter.
Choice777 it's a display option. You have to scroll over to display while stopped. Then scroll through options u can choose to remove the trip info, add or remove the mpg and that throttle meter
Imagine if the government starts taxing how much miles we drive
It's not an if. It's a when. We all complain about taxes, but how will potholes get fixed without revenue?
MPGomatic the thing is if people drove lighter cars the roads wouldn't take as much abuse. I'm not disagreeing with you, but I think it's time for tax rebates given to people who drive economy cars, hybrid or not. Or if we are eventually taxed, it should be a tiered system where lighter weight vehicles pay less compared to SUV's.
Jack Jones Additional rebates won't happen any time in the near future. Folks that drive fuel efficient vehicles pay less tax per mile than SUV drivers as it is now.
Then there wouldn't have been a shutdown.
How does "B Mode" effect regen? Does it mean max Regen?
I only get 40 mpg consistantly with my 2016 Prius I just baught. How much do the tires and wheels affect the mpg? Anyone have data? I have factory 17 inch wheels and off brand tires.
Wish I could get 80!
Tires can make a bit of a difference. Do you know if your tires are low rolling resistance?
@@mpgomatic I am unsure. Are there specific markings on tires that signify this?
@@brianski007 Best way to know is to look up the brand/tire name on TireRack. What kind of tires are they?
I wish this had the Leaf's e petal or whatever it is where it turns a heavy regen on when you just let off the gas. I have a feeling when you are dragging on the regen brakes its flashing the brake lights on and that is obnoxious to people behind you
What is the average mpg of 4th gen Prius doing constant 75mph on highways in warm ideal weather such as South Cali? I'm looking at the Prius 4 with the 15" wheels.
Hello how are you? Is that a Prime plug in or a regular one? Becayse those numbers are crazy. Thank you
Regular prius
Is the test route a loop? If not, what’s the elevation change?
On back roads it's not to difficult, but try it on the motorway at70 cruise.
It won’t happen at 70 MPH. 😂
I find it so funny at 11.11 when you came to a stop and met those guys!! hahahaha!!
If people behind you aren't honking and flipping you off then you aren't driving your Prius correctly. IDGAF I'll drive like a grandma to save a little gas money.
😂 Nice!
Can you please drive on the freeway with the 2016 Prius? I want to see what numbers you get when you have to speed up to keep up with traffic as well as going speeds above city speed limits
I did one highway loop with the adaptive cruise set to 68 MPH. It scored 51.3 MPG at 32°. It's more efficient without cruise.
Great job. I'm waiting to hear from vw and what they're going to do about my diesel before I go out and purchase my Prius. Would you recommend the 2 Eco or is that overkill?
I haven't been in the 2 Eco, +andyr1960. I'd recommend test driving a couple of different models to see what best suits you.
Hello dear
I’m from Cambodia 🇰🇭
Can you help me ?
How I can change MPH to Kg ?
Hi, which hybrid do you recommend that has good mpg as well as a smooth ride over bumps and potholes?
What’s your budget?

Prius! Better car for driving downhill.
Did you test Honda hybrid accord 2014 or 2015
I was able to get 74 mpg after a 24 miles trip using back roads, and not hypermiling.
+MPGomatic It would still be cool to see a video of yours where you are putting its HSD to its maximum.
BokiXI I'll see what I can do.
