- Ride along with MPGomatic.com as we aim for infinite MPG in a 2017 Prius Prime Plug-In Hybrid in 360º VR. [Get Local Prius Prime Pricing: mpgomatic.com/1800/fyt.html ] On this MPG Stunt Drive we cruise the back roads and through town under pure electric power, running the loop twice (forwards and backwards) to see the difference in energy usage.
You'll want to watch this with the RUclips app on an iPhone or Android device or with a browser capable of displaying 360º video.
The second part of this road test takes place on the highway and was recorded with conventional video (not 360). It will be posted separately here in the MPGomatic channel.
Vehicle tested: 2017 Prius Prime Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV)
I'd like to go back to shooting these High-MPG Stunt Drives with a conventional three-camera setup, but I need to spend some dough to refresh my equipment shelf. The old cameras and mounts are tired. In particular, the camera that's zoomed up on the instrumentation needs a great lens and super-stabilization. Any time you zoom up on something in a moving vehicle, camera shake is a huge issue.
MPGomatic produces car review videos with a unique focus on gas mileage, in-cabin technology, and driveability. Yep, we're the folks that shoot those 0-60 MPH tests.

Okay awesome job letting me control the camera.. now if you'll just let me drive.. you could trust me I got a full charge on my cell phone let's try it out my cell phone will freeze sometimes so I will try to keep it straight just bail out if it gets too nerve-wracking thanks for the video
I went back and was able to watch the old 360 videos, so it is only affecting this new one, the mystery deepens.
Nice seat. What's going on? I was wondering why it was aimed at the seat and then i touched the screen and the camera was moving around.
I liked the dual video layout better than this.
+Muhannad Aldajan I hear ya! I want to go back to a three camera setup, but I need new gear. Stable camera placement is tricky, especially when zoomed up on the dash.
Really hard to watch this 360 video.. Please do normal ones too
+Adrian Pritchard Many thanks for the feedback, Adrian! I will post the highway MPG test as a normal video later this week. Did you watch the 360 on a computer or on a phone?
+Adrian Pritchard Thanks for the feedback! I need to invest in new cameras and rigs.
Awesome job showing what the prime can do. What camera did you use for this? It looks slick!
Thanks, Nick! It's the previous generation Samsung 360.
Rather than using estimated range, it would be better to see the actual percentage of the battery used. This is available through one of the meter settings and replaces the estimated range in the HV system monitor.
I have the advanced model which comes with a HUD that displays both speed, HV system monitor, and estimated range. Therefore, on the dashboard HV monitor I display battery percent rather than estimated range.
I did one test where I had the battery at 100% at the start and drove 16.7 miles from work to home and used 40% of the battery. (This route is mostly downhill.) The next day I drove the same route back to work, starting at the 60% charge level (I can't charge at home) and just made it back to work as the battery hit the 1% level, i.e. just before the engine would have kicked in. 33.4 miles on a single charge going from A to B, and then back; B to A, This was back in the early summer with the temperature quite mild and no HVAC usage.
Larry Richards Great stuff, Larry!
or you can get the new LEAF with 40 kWh for 150 miles all Electric for those who watching that can charge at home. The Prime is great for about 18-30 Electric depending on terrain, temperature, and technique to get the best miles but doing so is like hypermiling taking the fun off of just driving and that's the Primes electric range anxiety.
I'm looking forward to driving the new Leaf. I've thought about picking up a cheap used first gen to use for commuting, since my route is reasonably short. Do you drive an EV or PHEV?
I sub your channel two years ago while looking at the Prius but ultimately couldn't wait for the Primes release so I went with a used 2013 Volt but saving for a used Model S. I'm not a fan of 360 videos as I easily get headaches so I just listened to your 360 videos. The only negative thing for me about the LEAF would be it's lack of thermal cooling system to help the battery life last longer. I find it funny that a few Prime (even with its 600+miles tank) owners wished that it has more EV range but I like it's massive MPGs stats maybe second to an Ioniq Hybrid/PHEV. The Prime is current the best Prius for the money and I look forward to Toyota's first true all Electric vehicle(s) not FC or Tesla help sold here in the US. GM is already going electric but Toyota is still sticking on FC and waiting for the battery technology to improve. With the Model 3 bottlenecks being fixed Toyota's going to lose to the other major manufacturers in the near future if they don't show an EV soon. What are your thoughts on the major manufacturers going electric?
Does the Prime beeps while in reverse like the previous Prius? That's one feature Toyota can take out or can the dealer silence it? Oh yeah, what's your thoughts on Mazda and Toyota making an EV together?
All I see is green screen!
+pedro fernandez That’s odd. Try reloading while on WiFi?
I tried watching on Microsoft browser and the 360 does not work and it has like 4 different images at the same time. Firefox is the one that's all green.
pedro fernandez Ugh. RUclips encourages creators to use the 360 format but browser support isn’t there yet on the desktop. Ultimately, people will watch with headsets for an immersive experience. (But that’s still quite a way in the future for most!) Can you watch it on an iPhone or Android device?
I saw it finally using the Google browser, I don;t know what the hell happened with the Firefox one, I always watch everything using that browser, just last week, they changed it a bit. Perhaps the change messed up the 360 view. I have never seen the screen go green like that.
