I really enjoyed Eternals. I especially liked the fight between Mekkari and Ikaris. Mekkari might be one of my favorite live-action heroes with super speed. There’s a great video from Nando v. Movies about how “slow motion speedsters are great, but overdone,” and I agree. Fast-paced and tense super speed scenes are soooooo much better and I really liked what they did with it. I only wish there was more of it throughout the movie

I didn't enjoy the movie on the whole, but I share your opinion on Mekkari. I find her speed sequences extremely satisfying and I wish she hadn't been the last eternal introduced in the modern day. I felt my brain come back to life when she started slamming into Ikaris. Plus, the explanation for her deafness being because of the sonic booms may not be in the movie, but it's rad.

I'm on 'The Eternals' train, too. I was happy to hang out with them for 2 and half hours and wasn't bored for a second. I dragged a friend along who's not particularly into MCU movies and she adored it. I do wish they hadn't killed off the evolving Deviant, 'cause I think that was one of the most intriguing threads, but otherwise, it's quite startling how different my experience of the movie was from our boys here.

I think The Eternals is underrated. The story is great, it made me laugh, kingo was hilarious and it was emotional. I think it had a more mature tone but I'm here for it, the same way the Harry potter films became more mature I'm down for that with sprinkles of more fun films like guardians.

Great story? They forced sprites whole character. You know she could’ve lived the life she wanted if she would’ve done it sooner, right? It was normal for people to get married at 15 back then, also people were much shorter back then too. Literally all the problems she had, all the jealousy that grew from watching humans could’ve only been done for the new age. But that’s compared to the thousand of years she’s been alive and experienced the rise of humanity. Also, if they’re not allowed to meddle with humanity unless it’s a deviant so that they can grow, why do they do everything else for them? Phastos was basically creating every new invention for them and even created the nuclear bomb for the humans world war.

The martial arts def peaks in first half of Shang-chi but I think the fight with the rings between him and his dad was one of my fav in the MCU. They are some of the most creative weapons we have seen in these movies, him and his dad despite using the same weapons are able to express wildly different fighting styles.

    • @rubaiyat300
      @rubaiyat300 2 года назад

I kinda wish it had been two movies. one grounded and ends with a more "normal" fighting tournament style thing where Shang wins using his mothers fighting techniques vs his father who has to bust out the rings (and thus acknowledge Shang Chi beat him fairly in combat) and then we go to magic land. I think that place was an even bigger departure than say visiting Wakanda and we got introduced to Black Panther in another movie first so we could spend time on his homeland his friends and the villain. This was just a bit muddled.

So I forgot about eternals until a couple weeks ago when it showed up on disney+. Wow yeah, definitely felt every one of those 2.75 hours.
After discussing the movie with a buddy, the consensus we came to was that maybe eternals would have worked better as a weekly TV show. The movie felt weird how every couple hours we’d suddenly catch up with the next eternal that we hadn’t seen since the Aztecs/conquistador scene.
Also during the movie I was googling who was who in the movie to see what other stuff all the guys were in, and I was thoroughly confused as we got closer and closer to the end of the film why google decided to list Harry Styles as first cast name. Then the movie ended and I forgot about Harry, and then he showed up in the PCS. Cool. Do a barrel roll.

While watching Eternals, I felt like it could have benefitted from a part 1 of some kind. Like another movie that takes time to explore the characters more during their time on Earth. The several flashbacks during the movie offered this perspective but in bite sized portions to a point where I think a movie going through their lives could have approached that aspect with greater depth and gravity.

Gotta say, I thought Trevor Slattery was one of the best things about 'Iron Man 3' - I saw that movie cold and the reveal made me laugh out loud. I also never took it literally when Guy Pearce's character said "I AM the Mandarin!" at the end of the movie - I thought he was just bragging about having moulded Trevor into this scary fake terrorist and in no way saw this as any kind of sacrilege. I also enjoyed the version of the character we get in 'Shang-Chi', but I'm really glad that they included Trevor in the story.

I agree that there were quite a few plot conveniences (deviants becoming active, Sersi’s powerup, uni-mind happening with emergence right after they discovered it, etc.). And they definitely should have explained why Sersi’s powers had an upgrade.
But to address a concern at around 1:26:30, the uni-mind doesn’t take all of their infinite cosmic energy from their being, therefore losing their powers forever afterwards; that doesn’t really even make sense - to lose infinite energy (not that having infinite energy does either). After watching the movie a second time, I understand what Phastos meant when he described them joining together in the uni-mind: think of each Eternal as a battery of infinite energy but limited output. Each Eternal outputs some (a minimal amount) of their energy just to keep their body operating, but then they must output an increased amount of power to use their powers. However, due to there being a limit to how much power they can output (an arbitrary but still limited amount), the effects of their powers are limited (i.e. they can only transmute a certain amount of material, charge a blast at a certain speed, control a certain number of minds (or at least limited by their level of intelligence), cast a certain number of illusions (that last one doesn’t really need to have a limit though), etc.). So the idea is to siphon the power output of every Eternal into one so that they can amplify the effects of one of their powers. But the infinite well of energy within each Eternal is not actually drained, it’s just the output that is drained and relocated. I think them basically shifting to a state of stasis also indicated that even the energy being used for their basic bodily functions are being siphoned to the person in charge of the uni-mind.

I totally agree. The movie really suffered from trying to do too much at once and not balancing it properly. Kro especially pissed me off, because I think that it could have been interesting to see more of the dichotomy between a being that evolves against beings that don't, and that his philosophy could have set up the second movie much better.

I’m pretty sure the deviants could have always stolen powers from the Eternals and “evolved” because of those powers, but they never had the chance to before because they were effectively extinct until Tiamat was about to emerge, and they were never able to kill an Eternal before because there were always together and therefore couldn’t be bested.
So basically, when Ikaris fed Ajak to the deviants, it was a massive evolutionary development that gave them a conscience and all of her memories, and that pushed them to focus on the other eternals.
However, I agree that they could have focused on the deviants more and explicitly explaining some of this; also, seeing their evolution happening earlier in history. There are a few things throughout the novie that would have benefited from a slight increase in focus. But after watching it a second time, I was able to understand what they were going for and what was actually happening much more, which took away some issues I had initially.

    • @holdwhatdoor7629

Agree that it would have had a lot more room for character development by making it 2 movies so that we have more invested in the characters. They could really have made Ikaris' turn/reveal carry a lot more weight. The ideas of the movie weren't terrible, just the fact that it wasn't developed and felt rushed. Kind of had that feeling of the last season of GoT where I don't think the main plot points were necessarily bad, they just were rushed and didn't allow for the characters to develop in a way that felt natural or compelling.

I feel like Eternals really fails to live up to the big ideas of Jack Kirby’s cosmic universe, in some of its visuals and fights and powers (even if I do like the artistic direction of a lot of the Celestial tech). But it engaged me in a way that I didn’t expect, which was to focus on the thematic side of his cosmic universe. Exploring how these immortal beings would adapt to their lives. I agree that the action is a bit plain but I also think it wasn’t really about its big action moments.
I did really enjoy it, despite the Marvel-ness holding back their characters at this point (when characters would drop their quips and references to other movies as seemingly the only way Marvel can make characters relate to each other in their connected universe anymore).

I didn’t have any attachment to the evolving creature thing, but I was really interested in the idea of someone angry at a God making the decisions and forcing people to play along, who then controls everyone with his mind and forces them to do the same. I feel alotnof people are just trying to find something wrong with it cause it’s trying to be different just a bit and all the hype before it came out. And cause it’s not as fun. Not every superhero movie needs to be fun and lighthearted. I thought I was a breath of fresh air to have a Marvel movie that wasn’t afraid to live in serious and dramatic moments . And not cut the tension with a joke like every other Marvel movie. Whixh at this point is the formula and people act like they want it to stray from the formula but apparently not. Is it perfect? No. But is it worse than every other MCU movie? No. It’s way better than Hulk, Captain Marvel, both Thors, both AntMans, and Iron Man 2 and 3, and it’s prob the best first solo movie. I thought the characters were good and genuine and felt like real people not just quipped caricatures. The action was great and they found interesting ways to use the powers and they didn’t just fight mindless robots or monsters like most Marvel third acts. They actually fought a named character we knew. Who had a motivation. Don’t understand how you don’t get the motivation. Again, just trying to find something wrong with it. I loved the added mythos and world building. And with regards to it not being cosmicy enough. No one said it was a full out cosmic movie. It was sold as a smaller character driven film plus look at who directed it. That your own fault for hopin for that. They sold us in Celestials which we got quite a bit of. More than I actually thought we’d get. For trying to introduce 10 brand new characters plus all the mythos, Chloe did a spectacular job and I care more about these guys than some of the Phase 1/2 origin movies that focused on solely one character. I feel like the Deviants were pretty well-explained. That they can harm Eternals but Ajak acted as the one healer of the group, in the opening. So they were always able to counteract it. And that they consume and adapt through the life they eat on earth, which is why they looked like earth’s predators.
So when they absorbed an Eternal’s life, it gave them a taste of that sentience that the Celestials gave the Eternals. And it was also now able to heal itself using Ajak’s powers.
I’m realising this sounds like nonsense.

This movie should have been a series though, with each episode following a different eternal with nice action beats and less flaccid talking. I hope that with the sequel they don't just talk to the celestial and that they just kill it in a big spectacle of lights and explosions.

  • @gahbahrge

Just saw the Eternals this weekend and it was just a big meh. I appreciate them trying to do something different, but this movie crumbles under the many different character arcs and plot points. There was a good story in there but it got bogged down by unnecessary side stories and meaningless character shots. Idk why I had to watch Kingo walk around a dance party when I had questions about what cerci was doing in regards to the world ending……..
A massive robot thing is about to tear through earth and none of the Eternals seem to have an existential crisis about that OR the fact that their whole mission has been a lie. They seem to shrug it off and have more moral ambiguity about saving the race they have “loved for centuaries” this movie was frustratingly over complicated. I give it a 5/10.

    • @PittsburghSonido

They don’t have an existential crisis about the world ending! Lmao? What? Two of then literally WANT it to happen as of their faith in Airshem, one of them is indifferent as he wants to protect earth but will not turn on his family, and the rest literally fight Omniman to save earth, risking eminent death.
Not to mention they’re not particularly “human” with “human” existential crises. And as far as being lied to, they literally are upset. Idk how you missed that. What did you expect them to do, all fly into the sun in a metaphoric blaze of glory? No. They’re a team, a unit. They fight together, and have fought together. Lol they spent centuries defending and developing earth, they’re not going to let the celestials win; they deserved to turn against arishem.
There’s a few things of error in this film but the character arcs aren’t one imo.

    • @davidgeldner2167

@@PittsburghSonido Yeah, honestly. It’s. It fair of him to say they had no respective crises. Ikaris, big spoiler, literally kills himself. If that’s not an internal crisis I do not know what is.

@@PittsburghSonido Im not holding them to a human “existential crisis” but rather the one set up for them in the film. Ajak ALWAYS knew the celestials plan but became fond of humans, Ikaris found out but couldn’t turn on Arishem. Other than that, simply everyone decided to fight Arishem because they want to save humanity from an undeserved date. Kingo backed down and became indifferent and Sprite was just kind of simping for Ikaris even though she wants to be human…….
I really wanted to like the movie, I thought the cast did great and frankly the action scenes were really great!! I just found that there was so much going on, but I was never given a real reason to care. At the end of the movie…..Cerci questions if they did they right thing by saving the world……?

I enjoyed it. Was engaged even if some parts were slow. My critiques are : Why did Sersi have the same non specific concerned look on her face for 2 hours?
Druig was the most chilled out, laid back basically 'uncharismatic' Cult leader of all time.
If the Celestials communicate telepathically and are Cosmic in origin - how is it they speak only in crystal clear American English ??
Could it have hurt to have some vague, low mix multilingual backstracks every time they spoke? I found that distracting, and pulled me out of the film for some reason.
Like even X Files and Independence Day got that visiting Aliens would communicate in alien noises that would require some translation.
Much as I was impressed by their sheer scale, and the overall presentation of the Celestials overall, that missing detail kept me thinking it was a video game cinematic and not the reality based film I'd been watching.
So overall, for a debut film - quite good if not great ! 7 out of 10
Now to somehow go watch the first 40 mins !

Where they deliberately frame the “gay moments” as things you can easily edit around or aren’t integral to the story, when it’s sent to China or needs to be on public broadcast or whatever. Which makes the gayness of characters feel tacked on and like Disney sees gayness as something you edit around in life. Like it isn’t a core part of people’s identity.
