Nice one. I have a 2008 MK5 GTi from almost new, done about 170k... still going strong so no complaints :-). Will keep popping back to see what you get up to in your project
Going to subscribe just so I can follow this. Been a GTi fan since I was 19 and have had 2 MKII’s & 6 MKV’s. It’s an amazing testament to the brand and model that it still looks good and runs after 200,000miles! British weather is tough especially in winter with all the salt.
VW give a 12 year corrosion warranty, if you can demonstrate the rust is 'through rust' and is rusting from the inside out, they will replace the body panels for free. I had both front wings replaced a couple years ago with genuine VW OEM wings, painted to match the colour of the vehicle, all I paid for was the doors to be 'blended in' to the new wings. Think it cost me around £50... The issue with the Mk5 wings, is that there is a foam type pad on the inside of the wings, i think for sound dampening purposes, as this gets dirty and wet from water and spray from driving, it holds the moisture and rusts the metal from the inside out.
worth noting (as i found out recently), that the original paint needs to be untouched, ie no previous repair, otherwise VW can refuse. Ended up googling and getting a pair of colour matched, insurance approved wings for £180 total from Lothian Autoparts, quality is top notch, cannot recommend high enough! A relatively simple bolt on job at home.
Ingrams in Ayrshire replaced both my front wings under VW corrosion warranty. But you're right, Arnold Clark refused to carry out the work citing that the paint depth on the wings meant they had already been painted.
@@chrise202 Absolutely not, I was the 3rd owner of my Mk5 golf. Upon inspection, they will check the paint depth, and if it is clear the panels which are experiencing through rust, have been painted already, they won't do anything for you. However, if the paint depth is as it should be, and the car has not been painted independently of the dealer, they are obligated to replace any body panels suffering from through rust by VW's 12 corrosion warranty. They generally make money from it anyway as they carry out the work - paint panels, fit them - and then bill VW for the work.
Been a MK5 GTI owner for just over 2 months and have a list of mods I want to do. Also new to all this so your videos are definitely going to be helpful. Keep it up!
Awesome detailed walk around video and i must say that the interior is very neat for its age and the overall look of the car is in a good shape given the mileage it has. Looking forward to more video.
The 17s work better than the 18s which bend and you also get pinch flats on them. Also acceleration is faster with less rotating mass - I think it made about 1 sec difference 0 to 60 in a test here in the US.
the lack of power is from the faulty maf sensor, my vw had a similar problem and it got worse and worse where there would be so little power from 2-3k after that it was normal, i replaced it and the problem fixed, also check the catalytic converter
TR Hamza yeah definitely a fault msg sensor, but give the catalytic converter a look aswell sometimes blocked catalytic converters causes this problem but for me the replacement of a maf sensor did the job!
Mrsorou1 im going to be honest buddy, it was extremely cheap I bought a maf sensor online for around 10-12£ and replaced it my self. It’s quite simple I wouldn’t recommend going to a mechanic since they would charge you labour but I would say do some searching online and watch you tube videos on how to fit the sensor on if you get stuck.
Just got a mk5 myself.. and yes those are in fact the factory brake calipers, was a little surprised myself 😂 - also has 170,000 miles so that’ll make a nice project! Did not have nearly as much rust tho. Had a little surface rust on the rocker panel which I just sanded right off and painted. You just earned yourself a sub! I’m so excited for the detail video! Please visit your nearest APR dealer , that engine cover needs to be changed maybe fit on a custom aftermarket or a oem Audi s3, remove that black number plate holder and do a flush install these are just things I’d like to see done on the car
If I was going to do this as a project, I would do it in the following steps: 1. Rebuild Engine 2. Change all fluids 3. Slap on Milliteck exhaust system with r32 exhaust tip. 4. R32 rear bumper/diffuser 5. BBS rims or something different 6. Upgrade steering wheel. 7. Install xenon lights 8. Light professional tints. 9. Replace screen with the original VW MK5 GTI/R32 FULL colour SAT NAV screen. And loads more lol.
Another great video on the MK5 - by the looks of the views on the reveal vid, it’s already proving itself a worthwhile buy. Really relatable content overall (I’ve started looking at cheap MK5 GTis because of it 😂) so keep up the good work.
Very good buy, very nice car. The rear bumper been resprayed it got a slightly different shade than the rest of the car. Dirty engine on an old car is always a good sign, some people wash the engine to hide oil leaks before selling. Love your channel 😎
I have a red 2006 2-door that's just about to roll over 200K. I have to say the car has held up phenomenally well, imo. No rust for me in Maryland. Main issues in 200K miles have been: failed fuel pump cam follower at 130K miles, failed turbo at 115K miles, failed oil filter flange gasket beginning at 175K miles, airbag light due to loose connection under passenger seat, one failed wheel bearing, failed front swaybar end links, headliner starting to sag, one failed HID bulb, and (lol) failed hood strut. That's really it. Everything else has been maintenance. Especially amazing to me is that the DSG still shifts like new and is on original clutch packs. You treat these cars well and they will last. I even pulled the oil pan off a little bit back and found rod play to be well within spec, no play in balance shafts. Compression still checks out at nearly 180psi. Like, I see no reason why the car won't go another 100K miles tbh
@@QB-23 That's 100% dependent on how well the previous owners maintained the car. I will say that 2010 should have the earlier TSI engine which to my understanding is less reliable at super high mileage than the older FSI or newer TSI, but I don't have a lot of experience with it.

What about under the side skirts (underbody)? That's the typical rust problem right there with MK5 golfs.
Just letting you know we all mk5 gti have. 11 year extended rust warranty on it, also you do not need to be the first owner go to your local Volkswagen dealership and ask when your car was purchased, for example my car was purchased in 2008 04/09 so the rust coverage is until 2019 04/09
with a car like this could u say it could be used as a daily driver?? I saw a 2013 Volkswagen golf 2.5L Hatchback 4D for $2500 with 230k miles on it and the seller claims it still runs smooth

Cant wait to see what you will do to this beauty compared to mine. Rust is sooo common on these. The bonnet tends to be loose and is common also the boot will be too. Another thing that's common is the interior buttons tend wear out overtime as well. Highly recommend to change the factory air filter box as they can be worn out easily
I owned a MK5 gti for a few months as a replacement for my modified R53 mini Cooper S. I still had the mini and had to sell the gti as I felt it was lacking any character, found it to be boring. Still a decent car but lacked drama.
Any carbon buildup? Some seem to think the FSI engines are prone to failure due to carbon Buildup. I ask because I got a Passat just recently with the FSI engine, my car has 71K miles on the ODO.

Brilliant vid as usual mate keep up the good work, your gti looks identical to my old mk5 gti I had 8 years ago and I bought touch up paint from my local be dealer and it was united grey , may be steel grey and united grey are the same paint code, worth finding out, can’t wait for the next vid on this car as i will be looking to buy another one to go with my lupo gti and mk2 gti 👍
MOSTYN GTI Thank you mate! Yeah I believe steel/united are the same, just different names in different markets I guess. Hopefully many more videos to come on this car 👍🏼
Looking forward bro! 😀👍
the interior has either been well looked after or it's had a new interior
New subscriber, looking forward to the project.
I got 1 06 mk5 coupe black with cloth interior 135k..stage 2 Apr tune.. coilover..apr exhaust system from front to back ...and oh yea the front fender always rust ...and the calliper come red ..i want to switch seats to leather ...spoiler expect a lot of saggy roof and door clothes..lol..
Still tempted by one of these 🤔 Great video as always! 👍
replace the dv for a gfb dv en replace the pcv valve. thats a known problem for boost leaks. it was on mine🤣
Oil change every 5k and front the countryside, if so i expect this engine to be strong.
shuhel miah Hope so! Does need various bits tidying up though, a bit lazy in the low RPM
