My Dad went to school with Frank in Antelope Valley High..I have 2 yearbooks with Frank in it, including an inscription to my father....Frank was ahead of his time and a talented musician.
I was in Palmdale High School in Antelope Valley near Lancaster where Zappa lived as a late teenager. I was 14 when the Mothers were recording Freak Out in March 1966. Friends and I went to see Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band at venues around AV such as the Lancaster Exposition Hall at the fairgrounds. Some of the members of BC and the Cavemen later became players in the Magic Band. What a time that was from '65 to '69.
Yes we grew up in our Valley we know where you went to high school we worshiped Frank and Captain Beefheart my best friend John Thomas help captain Beefheart I’m one of his albums
very cool
I have chills. I love Zappa. He’s one of those people you cannot imagine dead because he was so awesome. He’s still alive to me!
ME TOO!! I LIVE IN HIS WORLD🌄
Not just musically, but his honesty about other subjects.
He's alive on the internet
and in his music.😎
Zappa was, and will remain great throughout time yet he lived in a time when he should have had a, so to speak, a chip on his shoulder. In other words, Frank, like myself, were bullied by our own government, and we were bullied to the point of rebellion. Hippie, scumbag, draft dodger, and words of that nature took hold of all of our hearts. Now, and without Zappa, we are in want.
Frank Zappa was a talented writer and composer. He is one of the best conversationist, always enjoyed his insights on many topics.
My uncle that passed away absolutely loved Frank Zappa and I remember as a young kid finding a stack of Frank Zappa CDs in a cabinet. It was everything ever released. Excited for this one. Feels weird to say I am excited for this one like its specific because I am literally excited for every video you guys ever post but you get what I mean
Was your uncle Australian?
Me too same thing with my uncle ..... He techeched me Zappa's music , and simply music ...
my first Zappa's concert january (?) 1971 in Paris Palais des sports ....
Love Frank and thanks for the update on the grave. I did read that Gaga sold the house silently to Mick Jagger's daughter not too long ago.
Zappa was a genius. Making music you love KNOWING that you are losing a bunch of money to create it, is just one example of a true artist that didn't create music for any other reason other than his love for it.
Zappa was no genius. Homophobe, anti-Semite, failed parent for sure but "genius"?
He was filth
Genius for making money by producing crap. Commie Capitalist.
He fooled people with his nonsense shit music
What are talking about?
Great Googly Moogly, I adore Zappa! Thanks for the video.
To all the Zappa fans here: Don’t forget to come to the Zappanale festival in Bad Doberan Northern Germany this summer. In fact, every summer. It’s THE place to meet with thousands of Zappa fans and celebrate his music.
My dad loves Frank. It led me in the same direction. Frank deserves so much credit for his fight against censorship. He was such a cool dude imo.
Incredible how much music he recorded in his career. Had a roommate in college that was heavily into Zappa. Definitely a unique artist.
Wow I forgot he was only 52 years old. Thanks for all of these great videos.
0;17 What. WHAT?! It NEVER rains in El Ay--just like 'Nobody Walks in L.A.' ... XD
8:08 Loved 'Sheik Yerbouti'. The ultimate Zappa concept album--for the title, and cover photo, alone! Luvvit.
And thank you for sharing Zappa'a final resting place! Many channels haven't got it right. He was brilliant, and should be remembered for his contribution. 🙏
Not many know that Frank was a good friend of North Hollywood High School's band teacher, back in the day. In fact, Zappa used to live across the street from the school, whose mascot was...a HUSKY dog. Which gave him the inspiration to pen the lyric to a song mentioned in this video: '.. Don't go where the HUSKIES go, and don't you eat no YELLOW SNOW'. Source: NHHS graduate, circa 1973. 💥💥BOOM, bay-beh.
"A mind is like a parachute. It only works when it's open." ~ Frank Zappa
As of 2023, it'll be 30 years since he left us. Miss you, Frank!! ✌🏻😎🎶🎶🎶🎱
30 years - I can't even wrap my mind around that.
@@ilanamillion8942 Don't wrap it... open it.
Apparently it’s an old quote from a long time ago but I like to think Zappa made it lol. He definitely made it more popular
Zappa was an insult to other composers
He was garbage
In 1979 in New York city at a bar called the city limits in the village I met Frank Zappa. Bars are super crowded and we had an extra seat. A guy ask if he could sit at our table and we said sure. I didn't recognize him his hair was cut but one of the guys with us did. Frank said he was with the band we had a deep conversation with him about UFO'S. He brought it up out of no where but never said he ever saw one. I saw a lot of famous people in New York city the three mouths I lived there on Governors Island.
That’s so cool you got to live on Governors Island. It’s a park now.
@@samanthab1923 I was there from December 79 to the end of March 1980.
@@ronrobertson59 How cold was that winter? You’re right out there in the harbor. ❄️🌬️
Zappa was garbage
I was stationed on the WHEC Dallas at the Coast Guard Station Governors Island '75 to '76.
I always thought he was a unique cool dude that loved music and playing it. It's sad he left us too soon as he had so much more to share with us. RIP Frank. 🎃
Oh, nonono. He wrote much more than any of us. 41 years old, I maybe wrote 500 songs, released 1 album, this guy recorded 50 albums and died at 51. He must have written 15000 songs, I reckon.
@@pavlekocbek - Frank released 61 albums in his life when you include the 2 Msystery Disc LPs from his 3 Old Masters box sets. He died December 4, 1993 at 52 years old, not 51.
was talking from my head, it is obvious he wrote abnormal lot of music @@Frunobulax74
Frank gave me my start in the music biz. I owe him for eternity for that and his music. And he was a true genius.
Can't believe it's been nearly thirty years since he died!! Thank you ghouls for covering Zappa. Excellent coverage ❣️ 🎃 Happy New Year!!!!
He was very funny and smart. I would say that he was an intellectual. I have always felt that his kids also have a great sense of humour. That vault is amazing!
I was a huge Zappa fan when I was in high school. Had all his albums up to that point in time, ALL in vinyl because that was the technology then. Yeah, I'm old. Tried to go see him and the Mothers of Invention in Indianapolis in concert at the time, but couldn't swing it with my parents. R.I.P. FZ.
Vinyl has came back since.. And good music still comes out on vinyl..
You "was" Rondo????
Zappa iant no flu !!!!!
He's the best disease a human can get !! 😋.
Hope you get well soon 👍👊
Thanks for doing this Michael....Always been a big Zappa fan and it's good to see him getting some respect.
Hard to believe he's been gone almost 30 years already.
Much like you Micheal, my appreciation for Frank's work grew with age. His messages are as relevant today as they ever were. I hope everyone in the GLC has an amazing (and Grimm) new year.
Grimm for Life!
Excellent video on Frank 💯.
As someone who was involved in the "Save The Vault" project, I can say that Joe Travers knows more than anyone on the complete contents of the vault and has done a tremendous job cataloging the videos, music, musical equipment etc.
There's at least 100 yrs worth of unreleased material imo and from what Alex Winter has said when he did the Zappa Doco.✌
RIP Frank Zappa! We sure could use your gift for speaking up for human rights at this time in history. 🎸💛
If Frank was alive today he would be 100% MAGA!
I think whoever coined the phrase “ahead of his time”, they were speaking about Frank Zappa. The man was a genius and didn’t get the true credit he deserved while he was alive. Great video. Thank you Michael and Jessica
Zappa was a fascinating person, a true self-taught genius who created unique music. Sadly, he passed away at an all too early age.
I always wonder if he would have lived longer had he not been seriously considering running for POTUS. Ross Perot was his preference for VP, and Alan Dershowitz for AG. Then he got cancered.
@@KevinTambling From what I understand, he died because his doctor misdiagnosed his prostate cancer. By the time it was found out, the disease had progressed beyond treatment. So he very well may still be alive today if he simply had a better doctor.
I was at a Duran Duran concert in Vancouver B.C. the day Frank died and they did an amazing instrumental tribute and pictures on the big screen. It was obviously unrehearsed and was really a cool vibe and moment to be a part of. Love your channel as always!
I don't know if you're aware, but Durans guitarist at that time (Warren Cuccurullo) had also played for Zappa in 1979, the istrumental tribute he played at the concert you mentioned is a Zappa song called watermelon in easter hay.
I was at that show. Warren Used to be in Frank’s band so there was a direct link to FZ.
Warren was also in the nu-wave band "Missing Persons" also; before Duran
@@HakanTunaMuzik Without Warren Cuccurullo, I don't think duran duran made such a tribute to Frank !!!
@@carlosdanger6129 and Missing Persons drummer was Terry Bozzio no? Bozzio played in a monster of a Zappa band with Adrian Belew.
i'm 57 and grew up in a small town in Canada, but let me tell ya we all new who Zappa was and played that Overnight Sensation album and new every word to every song on it!!!!
Did not like Frank Zappa but can appreciate that lots of people loved him !! RIP Frank!
Don't like him either. His fans are pretty annoying to be honest, it's the typical "I'm smarter than you because I understand this music"
Zappa put out so much music that it’s hard to consume. Years back I saw Dweezil do Zappa plays Zappa. By FAR the best and as close to Frank’s original production. My father grew up with Frank’s music, I play it today as it brings back fond memories of my growing up with my father. 👍
Too bad there is in fighting between the siblings over the estate.
@@mlm21 Exactly! Breaks my heart as it stifles Frank’s music. Dweezil was sued for just using the name “Zappa” like what the actual Fock. 🙄
I found a box of records in the trash when I was 9 (1975) About 30 albums there were 3 Zappa A beefheart an Every Jefferson Airplane and every Jethro Tull a few other goodies too ...that shaped my music tastes . I've loved Zappa ever since
It was 1973 when a friend in high school turned me on to Zappa and Capt. Beefheart. Shortly after that I moved to Austin Texas. Saw him 3 times at the Armadillo World Headquarters. Sat on the board for 2 of those shows. Good night Austin Texas wherever you are ☺️❣️
Those Zappa records were in the trash for a good reason.
Zappa was filth
He changed the World of boring assholes 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
@@blunewhouse7528 AMAZING !!! First time I saw him I was 10 (76) me and a friend tagged along with his older brother who just started driving that week ...it was his first little road trip !
The mother of my best friend when I was a girl was Frank Zappa’s 1st cousin. I was told not to bring it up with her because he wasn’t her favorite person. He seems like he was a nice guy, but as a teenage cousin, he got into a little trouble. Apparently he was living with his Aunt & Uncle for awhile and my friends mom was told she had to take him with her to a friends birthday party. I guess he got bored and wanted to liven things up by creating a small bonfire, in the friends basement. There was no real damage to the house, but my friends mom lost a friend because of it. Starting a bonfire inside a strangers home is definitely not ok, but it was kind of wrong of the mom’s friend to be so hard on her because of something Frank did. Anyway whenever I think of Frank Zappa I think of bonfires.
Just like you as a child I really didn't appreciate Frank Zappa's music. Now as an adult I have a deep appreciation for it, not only his music but the man himself. What a great Patriot! I certainly don't want to give up my freedoms to a bunch of nincompoops and let them figure it out for me! Anyway great video I really enjoyed this one. Thank you. Like always thanks for taking us on the adventure.
The Vault.... that's the 20th Century equivalent of the Tomb of King Tut.
I have met Dweezil twice and he is a beautiful human being and he keeps his dad's legacy alive
HEY, . MICHAEL AND JESSICA YAY. Thanks for doing this video on
My favorite Freaky scary People Frank Zappa he will always
Be Loved and missed
I got to visit what would be his "Joe's garage" studio that was pretty much all Carvin gear.
Dwezil was a friend of Fabio who was friends of a friend of mine who I met through yet another friend of who built performance motorcycles.
I was a touring roadie for 35+ years out of Nashville and L.A.
He was very tech savvy and most humble.
We all had lunch at Casa Vega and the female staff were so in to Fabio the rest of us were invisible...and Frank seemed to enjoy that.
What a strange trip it's been....
Great episode! Frank's music has been a big part of my life for many years.
So weird that you did this video!
I've been out of the blue binging on Frank and Moon's song "Valley Girl" for many of days now!
Nevada came into the union on all hallows day in 1849.. i was on tour with the reno cacophony work truck. down the hill from the house. i drove up and parked, thinking about my hero.. moon unit came out and talked. i met dwezel with my truck in reno. we talked about my mother, his mom, his dad and mine, the band and beefheart... i went to see zappa does zappa. i left early, it was like being at a funeral... ghosts visit me... the musicians were great, just to emotional for me... THANK YOU !!!...rockettebob in reno
I am a huge Zappa fan! I inherited Zappa records from my uncle recently. Thanks for the video !
There was one night where we had a power failure - so no TV or electric guitar, video games etc.
i dug out my old walkman and put on headphones and listened to frank zappa's "strictly commercial" CD and listened in the dark. just me and the music.
One of the most memorable nights ever... !
I have that CD of Zappa doing a live, Halloween performance in New York. LOVE ZAPPA....his quirkiness, his amazing talent. Michael, dude, you just keep popping out these amazing stories on video. You presented Zappa in this story so incredibly well
'Shut Up And Play Yer Guitar' albums and 'Joe's Garage Act 1 - 3' album are probably my favourite Frank Zappa albums.
You are probably right around 60 years old, like me... SUNPYG would be my choice for a Deserted Island Disc along with Joe's Garage... The best guitar work ever (and drums) on SU and the genius of xenochrony and the most immaculate production of all time on JG...
Thanks for doing Frank Zappa. He's still one of my favorites, and I've been blessed to have seen him live a few times. He was one-of-a-kind
Thank you for that. Going out un that dreary weather for us. You rock!
I grew up listening to Frank. Thx 4 the tour
I wasn't as aware of Frank Zappa before watching this tribute to him, he definitely seemed to be a one of a kind, I've looked at other videos of him since watching this and listening to some of the interesting music, I'd have to say he's definitely an inspiration to other musicians.
Great video as always....
Check out the 1979 Halloween concert (AKA: the "Baby Snakes" concert), or his 1988 tour (as seen at 13:16) to see and hear him at his best.
@@surfdigby - The movie Baby Snakes was filmed at Frank's 1977 Halloween concerts, not 1979.
@@Frunobulax74 I'm in the UK so was compensating for the different time zone.
Frank Zappa had a huge influence on my love of music. The first Frank Zappa album I bought was, "We're Only In It For The Money", by Frank Zappa And The Mothers Of Invention.
@Teachering - Actually that album was credited to just The Mothers of Invention when it was released.
You are correct.@@Frunobulax74
Very good choice of using Black Napkins as your background music. Camarillo Brillo is also a fave . Thanks for locating the Masters resting place. After his Vancouver gig we left quickly to beat the crowd and a limo pulled out in front of us in the lot, we recognized the schnoz in profile. We followed his limo to a non-descript Mexican place, Zappa went in. We did not go in because as Canadians and as a Catholic Girl, we wanted him to have his meal in peace. What would we say anyways other than, thanks Frank. Thanks Frank.
We used to listen to Joe's Garage everyday on the way to high school. RIP Frank.
“Just a coupla’ quarts of beer”

@@sirchromiumdowns2015 I have been known to say, when the music is crap, “Don’t you boys know any nice songs?” Haha
We would go see him on his Halloween tour at the Uptown in Chicago, late 70’s. What a beautiful mind.
As a young teenager in the early 1970s, I was introduced to Frank Zappa‘s music by an older friend. Specifically, “ weasels ripped my flesh,” “ overnight sensation“ and “Apostrophe.” My mind was blown. Over the years, I was fortunate enough to see Zappa live many times. Never a bad show or lineup. I believe that, listening to Frank Zappa, not only made me a more adventurous, music, consumer, but also a smarter and better human being. Frank’s music definitely was not for everyone, mostly music nerds with open minds. Thanks for the education, Frank.😂
Loved this ..thanks yall. Awesome RIP Zappa. I'm from Baltimore Maryland too.
So glad I subscribed to, grimmlifecollective to get the notifications on super cool stories, like this one on, Frank Zappa! Also, it was fantastic to see, Dweezil Zappa, who is without question, a great legacy to his father!
Awesome Video thanks so much for posting!!! I am a giant Frank Zappa fan which is part of the reason I’m a musician. I got to record with Ike from his band. Frank was a god. 🎸🎶
I like Ike's vocals on "Keep It Greasy". Reminds me of Levi Stubb's of the Four Tops.
Man was ahead of his time when it came to music. I got one of his albums when I was in junior high. loved it. I wish I new where all my vinyl went. Great tour. Thanks for sharing.💀💀
Thanks for sharing. My dad was a big Zappa fan. He passed away last March a day before his 69th birthday, so this video was special to me. Thanks. One time I was able to get tickets to see David Lynch's Inland Empire, at the Sydney Film Festival, & Mum wanted all of us to go as Sydney is a bit of a drive from where I live, & I cautioned Dad about how weird Lynch's work is, but he was game, because he then mentioned how weird & out there Zappa is.
Thanks for sharing & Happy New Year!
Happy New Year GrimmLife. Thanks for all the content!
Another Grimmlife video that is both entertaining and informative.
Great video. Related to Zappa, a video on the history of Captain Beefheart and the recording of Trout Mask Replica would be awesome.
Death will come for us all. Better to be remembered once than never at all.
The OG 'Freakout' reel was created on my aunt's birthday. So happy they have been able to upkeep these.

Excellent video. Fascinating to see the Zappa residence and unmarked grave. Much appreciated.
I had 3 encounters with FZ outside the Garrick in NYC in 67-68. Very pleasant fella to meet. He introduced me and 2 friends to Richie Havens and Al Cooper. Havens was a very nice fella!

When Frank trolled Tipper Gore was epic. His description of her Holier-than-thou delusional thoughts left her speechless.
I needed this more than I thought. Zappa, we salute you. 👏
Great tribute to an amazing musician and a remarkable human being. Thanks for sharing. Unfortunately, I never got to see Frank perform live, but I have been to many ‘Zappa Plays Zappa’ and subsequent Dweezil Zappa shows. The closest I’ve come a Frank performance was back in 2019, when ‘The Bizarre World of Frank Zappa’ came to Amsterdam. That was a great evening. Plus, I got to meet Ahmet there
