I will.
😂😂 I love this comment
Was anybody else as amused as me when he was wearing the rat puppet?

Yeah
Im in tears. Guy runs a 7 figure tech company 😂
That was a good moment.
It's to show an example but tbh, I chuckled a bit

In our defense, thats what a rat would do in his entire life and he will be dead pretty soon. On the other hand, we have a really long time span and we can still do amazing things despite wasting the first 25,30 years of our lives tbh
The rat puppet really caught me off guard
SAME!
Me too.
its like armageddon when the dude pulls out the toy shuttles on sticks XD

Rats are winning this year. Saving the universe and saving innocent victims of leftover land mines. What CAN'T they do.

They also sniff out tuberculosis from sputum samples. This saves massive amount of time as the rats pre-screen the samples and then the ones they flag as positive are sent to laboratory for testing. The rats are incredibly accurate.
Anything that has a scent they can detect they can be trained to detect.
It's awesome and it sucks they get such a bad rap, but not surprising as we human beings feel we can exploit and abuse whatever we want, and it's always usually animals who are on the shit end , if people really knew or I should say took the time to research what we do to animals ... I would love to think they would change their stance on sooooo many things , but as we have been conditioned our whole lives that animals don't feel , there not smart , there just here for us to eat and abuse.. I don't know, I do what I can to spread the message that we need to change the way we treat these precious gifts ... Sorry I'm ranting, animals are the most important thing to me so it's a passionate subject for me..
wondertwin What’s the failure rate for something like that? Like what if the rat misses one that’s positive? Do the samples that the rats don’t flag eventually get tested anyway (after the samples they flag were tested)? Imagine a doctor telling a patient, “sorry we missed the issue because we never tested your sample because the rat never told us to.”
@@MommyOfMutants I remember hearing about it awhile back and the success rate was extremely high.
@@jenh7417 it's not every species of rat, it's a specific one. Friendly reminder some rats spread the bubonic plague, too.

@@scaryprincess13 i think its the mice(or any smaller prey: lizards, roaches etc) that triggers the cat's hunter instinct or something like that
@@GenJuhru Sort of. I think it depends on the cat's prey drive. One of my very small cats would bring home jackrabbits as big as her. She was a wild one. She loved my rats, though. You're right in assuming that she ate my hamster, though. ;)
I've had pet rats for over seven years now. They're cute and intelligent and just my absolute favourite animals to have as pets. I also have seven cats and four dogs. The rats chase them around them room. I don't think the cats would try anything while I'm there, but I still monitor the interactions.
Hero rats are amazing. I cry every time I hear about them. These little creatures are so wonderful and intelligent.
It was nice to see the face of the voice giving us the information. I miss seeing more of the staff.
Dont cry bro they gave their lives so that others may live. That's what a hero does
Rats are 11B’s of medical research, sent to die for people who secretly hate them.
Sooooo not only are rats saving the MCU but they're saving people from landmines? My God give these animals a medal.
Daily DeFranco is literally all I've wanted for the last decade. Ty
Very interesting but after the video I'm only left with ine question.
How the hell do you use Honey Bees for Landmine clearing?
6:25
They feed the bees food that has traces of explosive chemicals and then let them loose so that the bees try to look for their next "meal" in a mine-laden area
@@ohhellothere3217 thanks for the explanation (y)

Really well done! I work in this field and with the orgnanisations you mention, I can say this video is very well researched. I'm for sure sending this to friends and family and any other who asks me what it is mine action is about, and especially about the Hero rats :) Thanks so much for doing this piece!

Edit: okay so originally I said “ratback” he said *ratpack* I’m greatly sorry to those I offended with my deafness 😔👌
He said ratpack... which was originally the name of a group of entertainers including Sinatra in the 50s in Vegas.
Pretty sure he said "ratpack"...
@Bianica H and @Facho7 lol you be right I misheard I wrote this on the train not thinking anyone would see it 😂
To be fair "p" and "b" sounds are very similar, in sound and mechanics, so you're cool by me.
@ChaosKitchen lol thank you for your understanding 😂
Fascinating piece, I'd never heard of these rats being used as a de-mining tool.
As a parent of two rats I love them. They are so smart, affectionate, and playful. Plus very clean and can be potty trained. I love my boys 🐭🐀
Pouchies are also trained to detect tuberculosis to a similar/better rate of accuracy and far faster and cheaper than medical tests, and they've recently started being used to detect Pangolins being smuggled for traditional medicine.
They are 11/10 good bois

Hands down RUclips's best news channel. You guys are awesome, keep up the great work :)
Considering just how slow and tedious landmine removal is, it really is a testament to just how terrifyingly effective landmines are as a weapon of death and destruction.
It really is
This is amazing, thanks for highlighting this topic. One of my old teacher's lived through WW2 and she vividly remembers seeing a childhood friend just disintegrate after tripping a mine in some building rubble. I won't have thought this was still such a widespread issue. (Apart from active war areas). Wow, I wonder if we'll start to see rats getting incorporated in screenings for substances and other search and security roles?
We certainly should. They can be trained to sniff out anything with a scent!!
You just need to click the soil to see how many mines are nearby, then plant flags accordingly.
Man you just made me play 3 rounds of mine sweeper.
During my service in the IDF as a combat engineer, we were tasked with clearing out landmines in the Jordan Valley. That included going into a live mine field.
That shit is scary, yo.
Whoa. I can't even imagine how scary. You're a bad ass... No doubt!!
Trying to get it back to a tabula rasa eh?
I bet it is, damn. I'd be crapping my pants the whole time.
'And now it's time to pass the question off to you: how do you feel about landmines?' Jk jk
I'm constantly in awe of the amazing content PhilyD makes now. I've been watching for a decade, grew up with him in a sense, and the transformation is amazing.

I like both. The daily programme and the deep dives do different jobs - so I don't really need a preference.
Basically, both kinds of shows have the PhillyD branding on them - so I know they going to be informative, educational and entertaining.

Great video! As a supporter of Apopo it's great to see some spreading of the good they do. I have been to the Apopo fields in Tanzania. It's really really something to see for real!!
My fav part is after the rats retire they basically get to be well loved and cared for pets by their handlers. That's just adorable and sweet.
I love when Maria does these videos!
Is that the woman that asked him to explain what happens after they put a explosive on the mine to blow it up? I expected the guy to say "I just said what happens". lul.

Why am I just now hearing about this?? This is amazing!!
Yes, considering the BBC did a big story on this in 2014. Phil is a little behind on the news, lul.
*HOLY SHIT!!!* I've lived in Cambodia since 2015 on & off, have "met" some of the HERO rats, am familiar with the staff there because I visit so often & my mom even decided to sponsor one after she came to visit me here! I'm SO stoked you're highlighting this!
*Thanks Phil!!!*
They even made it to Pixar
Rats are the true MVP of my time
While I am morbidly disgusted and horrified at the sight of a giant rat ( Where I live at, usually the sign of rats foreshadows a snake appearing inside the house following after them in the summer)
I now have respect for Ratatouille's thicc Ugandan brothers.
😁
Thank you! Finally something that isn't about #RUclipsdrama.
I enjoyed this episode.
Spot on.
I simply do not care about the dramas of teenagers that do make up tutorials. Yeah, they have lots of subs-- and they will be forgotten in 6 months when the next big fad on social media takes over. These people are pseudo-celebrities to begin with, and the moment the fad switches to something else they will be teaching make up to their co-workers at a fast food joint.
TheSollyLama Make up isn’t just a fad. I don’t care about them either, but they have established communities and they aren’t just going away anytime soon.
@@thesollylama130
Are you forgetting that Philly D is one of those "psuedo" celebrities? This is a community, it's fine not to care about it but it's silly to complain when every video has time stamps.
Also how is makeup a fad? That shit has been around for hundreds of years.
Man I’ve been following their IG for like 3 years! Finally getting the recognition they deserve.
Rats in little dog harnesses sniffing out landmines the 2nd coolest thing I've seen this week.
Maria, you are so well spoken and just absolutely beautiful! I can see your career going really really far. Hugs!
I think these weekend news dives are really working for me.
Atypical topics, nothing overly aggravating, and best of all... Philip DeFranco 7 days a week!
As a child, I used to play in a field, filled with landmines. No one ever believes me, because I am in one peace, physically somehow. Oh, by the way, I'm from Angola. Mozambique means well, but the wars (in Africa) did nothing to help this issue. This issue is important for every human, not just in Africa.
Thank you for covering this.
Glad you're alright
Sometimes I find out there's some horrible problem I'm ignorant of and I'm so glad there are people who are taking care of it.
Everyone that narrates these deep dives have great voices
Not reading the title and only seeing the rat on the thumbnail, I came in expecting something along the lines of "using rats as human test dummies are bad/controversial/etc.", but this, this is actually amazing. When I saw it using dogs, my heart skipped, well knowing the fact a dog could without a doubt set off a mine here and there. Seeing that rats can do this, and have pratically zero risk of accidental denotation as they are so light, is utterly amazing to me, along with the fact they were able to train the rats like you would a dog. I do not give rats enough credit for their intelligence, and it puts me at ease to know they found something that does not risk the death of a human or animal.
This is awesome. I visited Cambodia and Vietnam a few years ago, and saw some of the land mine warnings. Unfortunately, I was completely unaware that this was still such a big problem until I saw that. Thank you for bringing more awareness to this problem and what's being done to help it!
People might underestimate how important this topic is. Thank you for bringing it to light.
HRH Princess Diana was my hero. Flawed that she was she brought so much attention to so many things that needed it. She was a trailblazer in bringing attention to this and AIDS awareness. Miss her so much.
I love videos on "off" days because it lets me keep one of the best parts of my daily routine!
I'm so proud of where you and your team have gone. I don't know. Just seeing that interview was like a 'wow' moment for me. I've gotten so used to just seeing others videos, interviews and articles that seeing one from the Rouge Rocket team was fantastic haha
HELL YES. We "adopted/sponsor " a HeroRat. Rats are my favorite animal, they are amazing animals that deserve better than most think of them.
props to Maria for keeping a straight face when that puppet came out! lol
Hey, we donated to APOPO a few years ago! Neat.
My cousin did this when he was stationed in Korea so it's really cool to see a deeper dive into what he was doing and how far we've come scientifically.
Phil, I’m so happy you’re covering the Hero Rats. It’s an amazing process and charity. More people need to know about them! You can sponsor Hero Rats on their website! It’s not that expensive and you can even gift your sponsorship to someone else. 😊
This new consecutive weekend format feels somehow... More professional.. More 'news' like... I'm loving it.. I'm loving all the new content since the patron but this really feels like a big step with the deep dives...
I am really enjoying seeing her do the interview usually we just hear them and ive been so curious how they looked! This makes it seem more personal to me

I love that our British royal family has tried to help this issue by bringing it to the attention of the public thus putting pressure on country's to help remove them . These rats are also doing a great job!
Those rats are so adorable. They probably don't even know that they're saving lives. Such good little rats!

The only news channel I can rely on. Thanks Philly D!
Man I love the Friday sat Sunday videos it’s nice
Princess Diana really raised a lot of awareness on a lot of topics.
When I was in Cambodia I visited the landmine museum there. Basically, one guy and his wife with a mix of sticks and rocks and self-taught explosive training began demining the country back in the 80s I think. The museum contains just a fraction of what he'd found and disabled and they include bombs, shells and thousands of mines. It was quite the thing to see. Anyway, great deep dive man I look forward to seeing more.
Pretty amazing that people (and animals) are working hard to make the world a safer place.
First a rat saved the universe by freeing ant man so he could help the avengers and now by finding land minds, these rats are the true heroes
*>INSERT OBLIGATORY CRYING MAN PERFORMING A SALUTE
Oh my God I thought the noise at the beginning was cute rat squeaks and then when the landmine went and the squeaking stopped I almost started crying
Rats are always amazing and adorable.
I do love these informal informative Sunday discussions.
Rats are really smart. They can also be trained to run wiring in buildings...useful for updating schools and offices where the walls are cinder block and re-wiring would otherwise be costly and time-consuming. The handler taps on the wall to show the rat where to go, the rat finds the route, pulling the wires along.
Great deep dive! I haven’t read about this technology, and I found it very interesting. Thank you!
I love Gambian pouched rats! The first I ever worked with was called ‘Scabbers’. These rats can also be utilized to sniff out tuberculosis! 🐀 🙌🏻
110 MILLION! That is mind-blowing. Holy crap.
Back during the Nixon Administration Taiwan was at war with Communist China. Land mine removal on Taiwan’s outer islands took years, and was thorough, but not foolproof. My son was teaching there just a few years ago, and I’d been to visit him. He called me a few months after my visit and said, “You know that big log at the beach where we’d sit to dry off our feet? It had a land mine under it!”
The Cambodia Land Mine Museum is a great place to learn more while supporting the cause.
Enjoying the deep dives on the weekends
Hero Rats is one of the hidden gem charities. I’m so happy you covered this.
This has been a thing as long as I can remember... with the rats doing landmines. It's interesting 10 years later its now people reported about ♡
I was thinking the exact same thing! There's videos out about it and I thought they were called Gambian rats or giant Gambian rats, something like that. They're illegal to have here in the states. :(
@@tamarasauls8855 after watching the whole video I realized they've been around much longer than i thought but i was taught this in school as a kid.. I must have been 15 then
That report was so well executed, I forgot I was watching Phil.
My dad went to the Falkland sometime around the 90s and he said you could hear bangs as penguins stepped on the argentine mines left over from the war.
