Honestly I'd be interested in how much was spent just on rock deliveries. I have a half mile long dirt road and I've been slowly chipping away at it (paying others sadly) and it's been a really expensive project that has spanned 2 years so far. The rock is the bulk of the cost, aside from the cost of the operator.
They will need to maintain this road forever, and they have the equipment to do it. It will have to settle in for a couple seasons but they did it right and made it wide enough to manage what will present itself. There will be future loads of gravel, and other fill creating projects I'm sure they can use as well.
Riley and Courtney, a suggestion for you. Seed those banks/batters and the dirt sections adjacent to the road. The scrub/brush growth will help stabilize the soil, combat erosion and ultimately extend the life of your road. You might also consider planting a few more trees to replace those you had to push over. They'll also help stabilize the soil and eventually obscure much of the disturbance that was necessary in building the road. P.S. well done. You guys are a great couple.
Should get someone to come and hydro seed those steep banks to avoid any erosion and wash out during the winter.. roads looking great and very professional
Shout out to Sara for her help in filming this. I know that she's been a great help, as well as your friends staying there and helping you out as well. What a great project, and kudos to everyone involved.
When we started (watching) the road project, I wasn't sold on the entertainment value let alone the reason why it was decided to make so much content on it. Today was a great reminder of all the hard work and trouble that came before the road was completed! I am so glad for you guys to have the security and peace of mind to pass up and down the road to your home without much effort now. So glad that Tyler and his family could help and spend the summer with you too, it was great getting to know them. My favorite part of this one was searching for the go-pro in the gravel after the dump truck drove over it! The side by side camera views of were entertaining. All the best, can't wait to see what's next!
Hopefully you got the drainage correct and don't have to worry about it! Since the winter will be here in no time, I'd suggest prepping for snow and fixing your drainage issue by the shop. Also, since the road project is fresh, why not figure out how you're going to take the road up to the top of your hill? Maybe clear a path for the snow-verlander for this winter?
What a huge relief for you. Looks great. Get a extra load of gravel to fill in spots as they happen and before they become a big problem. Also from now on when you grade angle the gravel to the center of the road. This will do a couple things for you. It will create a crown to help with drainage and keep the gravel in the road instead of pushing it in the ditch. Hopefully you have good ditches for drainage. As others have mentioned get the side hills seeded. Hydro seeding works well. Keep up the good work
Time for a cost analysis. Material: 400 cubic yards of 3/4-inch ABC = about $6,600. Material delivery = ?? Equipment rentals and purchases = ?? Labor: free !! Fuel and repair parts = ?? But the sense of accomplishment is priceless. A beautiful job with all of the correct decisions. Should be solid enough to avoid erosion damage from uphill snow melt. Spring will tell the tale. Congratulations to one and all for the energy and patience to work for two years on the project !!
I’m 75. As a young boy growing up in the 1950’s, we lived way out in “the sticks” at the end of a gravel road that looked a lot like what you just built. When I was about 5 or 6 some folks bought a lot near us and hired a guy with a big bulldozer like yours to clear the lot of trees and dig a basement. I got to sit and watch that dozer push dirt and knockdown huge trees all summer long. Ever since then I kind of wished I’d would have become a dozer operator. I went to college and became a business manager. I’ve worked on farms growing up and operated tractors and trucks but nothing like your dozer! You’re a lucky guy.
Make sure you let your local emergency services know that this improved road is now there. It could make a big difference if you needed them or if there was some other issue going on up by you. Great Job!
Well your officially now a road construction engineer wow what a overwhelming task to complete your road most people can't appreciate just how much work you put in to make this happen Well Done Folks its been a very entertaining ride with you all Thank You!
I can see a future project of converting the grader attachment to utilize the integrated joystick controls on the skid steer instead of that orange remote.
I myself have not put one penny into helping you guys with all your projects, I am disabled and on a fixed income but the joy you guys have brought me is priceless. I watch some of your videos everyday and love every minute of them. I pray God continue to bless you and your family. Keep the videos coming I love them all.
@3:20 , you can tell Oliver is starting to try to get a few vowels & consonants out. It won't be long before he's putting together some basic words! You can tell he's been kind of a spectator absorbing everything that's going on around him. It'll be great in the coming years to see him learn all his parents have to teach him! What a joy!
Great video! And nice finished road! It is amazing what a difference a grading attachment makes. We use a landplane and it is huge the difference it makes.
A huge SHOUT OUT to Tyler for all of his hard work. I suspect it was a win-win for both of you. You got a hardworking assistant and he got a ton of heavy equipment operation, maintenance, and repair experience that he can apply elsewhere if he so chooses.
The road looks great. I knew it could be fixed. The road needs a crown so its higher in the middle than the sides so the water doesn't sit on the road. You should do that before you use the roller. That rock will still compact if it's not as much moisture in it as when they dumped it out. Y'all did great! 👍
Congrats on the initial finish of the gravel driveway. Having grown up on a lengthy gravel driveway (nothing compared to yours, but still fairly long), I can confidently say you will be bringing in loads of gravel to fix low spots for years to come. Still, the big work is done. You guys are awesome
I can think of a road that people have been filling potholes in for 60 years to my certain knowledge, there must be tons of hardcore under each one, There is a geologists term for this but I forget it !
A semi truck, with a filled hot tub on a step deck with the two of you in it as it drives up the road. THAT would get a lot of views. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 When placing the camera where it will be buried, tie a bright orange or pink mason’s line to it and run it off on the side. Then simply pull up the line and you’ll find the camera much easier. Mason’s line is sturdy and abrasion-resistant so it’ll easily handle the task.
agree that high side with mainly dirt on the slope will get messy with spring break up period. a ditch to capture it and send it to a culvert will help pervent a washout there.
@@davidborehamHe he - nice one 🙂 Perhaps they will add some ditches or swales on the uphill side later. Will be interesting to see. I am part owner of a 3km private road myself. We have added some culverts after it was built so you have a point.

I am so stinkin' proud of you guys. That was really a substantial undertaking. HUGE, especially for your ages. I love the way you guys just jump in, figure it out and do the best you can, grateful for every bit you are able to accomplish. Ollie's look at 22:47 says it all. He sure loves his Daddy! And those friends of yours! Wow! What a blessing! One thing I'm wondering is were you able to get the road to the slope you needed? Forgive me if you mentioned it and I missed it. You had mentioned that the fire department needed a certain grade to be able to make it up to your house if needed, God forbid. That one rock gave you a lot of trouble. I'm assuming you accomplished that since you declared it finished but thought I'd check. Thank you for everything YOU do. You produce a really excellent channel and it's so nice for you to welcome us into your lives. You have such incredible personalities that make the channel! Take care friends!
Love Oliver's big"blue" eyes, his smile. Question, did you keep that 330 for another week? That toad really looks nice now. Hope it looks that good next spring.❤
The big hug at the end really put the end cap on the heartfelt struggles y’all have had for literally years. Thank you for bringing us along as you’ve created this road project!
Bice work guys. Keep in mind though....the faster you drive on it...the more it will get tore up and holes. Save yourself the time later by taking your time now. Awesome work and has been a lot of enjoyment watching it all come together!
I hope you guys are planning on planting grass on all the slopes along your road. Otherwwise, rain, and snowmelt, is gonna cause major erosion, and your gravel will end up down in the woods. Also, that D8 will destroy the gravel surface when you move on it. The weight, and the aggressive track pads will gouge the surface horribly. Good you have the grader attachment, because you will be using it a lot. Now that the road is basically completed, I would get a smaller dozer, nothing bigger than a D4, or JD 650, something in that size. It will still leave ruts in the road, especailly when turning, but not nearly as bad as the massive D8. Smaller means less fuel burned, easier to work on, cheaper to repair, and the smaller dozers are very capable, and if you ever need to transport one, you can do so without getting an oversize permit. If you get ruck to bring gravel in with trucks and want to lay it smooth tel; the truck drivers to lay it in reverse gear not like this guy did...
