Destiny is a better game than Lightfall presents it to be. Given how much momentum Destiny has gained over the past few years, Lightfall feels like a sudden stop that brings us back to the unevenness of the franchise’s past; a past we all hoped we had left behind long ago.

Jesus man... "The virtues of lightfall outweigh it's shortcomings"
This sentence affects your credability of reviews for any Destiny content left to release. You are biased because you're up Destiny's bumhole. STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR BUNGIE. They are hopeless at this point.
Get your ass back in time and look at what an expansion for Destiny used to be! It's not even funny. This game is a scam. The most expensive expansion ever released and it has the least content, and it's not even close, it's so far behind anything else ever released. The vast majority disagree with you, that's why it sits at mostly negative on Steam.
How can you possibly stand up for this? You're part of the problem. If folks like you didn't give them a pass for shit like this then maybe we'd actually get good expansions.
I'm disappointed man... IGN were right about the 5/10. At least they don't have the wool over their eyes.
I would bet $100 that you're only being this kind so you don't get your special access to Bungie's previews revoked.
God damn it, why do people let Bungie fuck us over and over time and time again. When will people realise that this sad battle pass piece of piss is just a mockery of what Destiny used to be and stand for?
Even if you do criticise the failures, to say something like that is just mind boggling. You're a smart guy Ralph, I know deep in your heart you don't actually believe that sentence. It's denial.
I hope you wake up one day and realise the Bungie execs should be going to trial for how the murdered this game.
Bungie are the antithesis of "respect your fans"
And you, Ralph, got absolutely disrespected and you take it like an abusive relationship.
I hope you manage to get out of it one day.
      All the best,
      Dizzy

You, like many others, are being disingenuous when assessing lightfall. What people want to know is whether the expansion is worth the price tag, the largest attached to a Destiny expansion to date. Yet you include the QoL changes in your assessment, and as a positive to overcome the negative areas. The problem is that people are not paying for those QoL changes. They are free for all players. If you are assessing LF, assess the content people are paying for. The seasonal content and free QoL changes like load outs, mod system, sandbox tuning, etc are an aside. They happen at the same time but are not part of the price tag. Which by the way is why Lightfall gets and deserves such negative ratings. The price for amount and quality of content is sub par.

People keep acting/responding like it's the narrative team that directs the game and where it goes/what happens. No. The narrative team has the unfortunate job of trying to cobble together some semblance of a coherent script out of directions/instructions/orders from the game managers (quite calling them Devs). You know how professional writers deal with this shit? They don't. They have professional editors to follow/proofread/critique/suggest/edit/keep on task the writer. Because shitty writing sells no/few books. Now think to yourself...does Bungie actually employ a professional editor?

I just want to add that this negative take on the game by regular players is also effecting the way new players and returning players view the game. Quite a few strikes I’m in, I’ll get singled out by someone doing exceptionally well. Just for not getting as many kills or dying a few more times than them. They won’t revive me but will the other player or will just shoot at me while I’m trying my best to kill enemies. Witch Queen had a lot content and a great story to soften the $80 blow. Lightfall has none of that to soften its $100 price tag. It is the first time I've felt buyers remorse from a Destiny DLC.

The biggest sin for me is that this is the single most expensive expansion yet, priced at least at 50 to 100 dollars depending on the version, and it's also the most bare bones of the major yearly releases. One strike, one empty patrol location, a number of reskinned weapons, one subclass, one raid, and a story mode that, by Bungie's own admission, isn't actually finished and will be fleshed out in--you guessed it--paid for seasonal content over the course of the next year. So, what, 50 bucks doesn't even net you a complete story with a coherent plot? Remember when Taken King had 8 new Crucible maps, 4 new strikes, over 20 new exotics, 26 story missions, new subclasses for all 3 classes, a new location that introduced enticing new world mechanics, and an overall improvement to the game's background systems? That was 40 dollars. Now 50 dollars gets you a percent of a percent of that much content, and an absolutely glacial patch team; it's been over a year since Bungie said they'd look into the frame rate affecting gameplay and it's worse than ever.
This is all in light of the recent GDC presentation Bungie gave wherein they fully admitted to designing Destiny as a minimally viable product that is purpose built to condition players to expect less for more year on year, and it's a trend that's held since Shadowkeep and it's subsequent expansions started forcing players to buy more and more content that used to come bundled with a 40 dollar price tag. They did at one point say we shouldn't expect expansions on the level of Forsaken again, but this is insane; there's barely anything in here and that so many people are cool with it that would otherwise rightfully be angry tells me that Bungie's Pavlovian conditioning is working.

Well said. They're asking for more and delivering far less. They have completely ignored 66% of what THEY themselves refer to as'the core playlists'. That and all the reskinned loot is a slap in the face. Not forgetting reusing all the vex Season of the Splicer map packs. Im fully convinced they only wrote the Vex into the storyline so it would save them time making totally new locations. I don't have an issue with them reskinning some loot, or reissuing some old classics amongst the new seasonal loot to pad it out a bit (for 10 dollars/euros thats fine). That should NEVER happen in the comet DLC however where they are charging top dollar.

@@WrathofArchon The Witch Queen is OK. It's nowhere near as great as the fans make it look. The same way they completely overrated Forsaken and it's pathetic "campaign", that consisted of killing 5 bosses that looked alike and had no character development at all. It had no plot.
Even though the setup for TWQ was good, what you call "execution" was still lacking. And in video game storytelling, execution matters perhaps even more than good writing itself. If you can't present you story in a way the public can engage with, it's pretty much the same as having all the lore in a book. It's like saying a movie has a great writing, but it's poorly shot, directed and acted.
What Destiny calls a campaign is a bunch of isolated missions that constantly break immersion, instead of a cohesive narrative. Main missions feel like secondary quests, forcing players to "kill 50 enemies and collect 50 bullshit items". Repeating the same paths and rooms. All of them consist of: teleporting to somewhere - following a path so linear it feels like a Crash Bandicoot level - kill a bunch of generic enemies - Kill a generic boss - grab a macguffin - get teleported out - get another loading screen to present this macguffin to a NPC that stands still and do nothing for the entirety of the campaign. If Lightfall had you on Earth after the main events of the DLC of Neptune, different characters could react to Strand and we could see it appear across the planets and in certain parts of pve e.g. strikes for everyone to use for a short time.
For example, in the opening cutscene Amanda is presumed dead. If we went through the DLC to then find her alive, it would be more impactful than just part of a seasonal story.

Honestly, I think the issue with the campaign is that Bungie has failed to leverage the underlying philosophical questions they are posing with each expansion.
Beyond Light: If we wield Darkness, what does that mean for our righteousness?
Witch Queen: If being chosen by Ghosts isn't some sign that we are a sort of holy warrior of the light raised to defend mankind as we thought, than what exactly are we? Leaning on adoption of darkness in BL, we now have two sides in a conflict that used to be light vs dark both using light and dark.
There are a number of directions they could have taken with Lightfall following this line of questions. But instead we got suprise new human city, you weren't the last but despite the Last City filling with a larger and more diverse population, we have two dudes. Also, our plot is basically get new darkness ability and defend the "veil".
We are playing out a conflict between good and evil where I don't know what either side is fighting for. What does The Witness want? Not sure, could make guesses but it's not really clear in game. What does the traveller want? No clue, we learned in WQ that it's light blessing is not reserved for us so we can't really say it's on our side.
There is so much interesting content in this game that has either been ignored (the entire pocket universe of Awoken and there true storyline is unknown to casual players as example). It sucks to see them go down this route and just fumble it.

Nails it at 4:20 (nice) I wanted to be able to take Witch Queen and Lightfall and say, “See? This is what you are missing! Two fantastic stories releasing one year apart, don’t tell me Destiny sucks!”
But I’m left with, “yeah, it’s not great, but other things have released worse for more money than $40-$50”
Edit 2: 27:27 I feel like it’s worth mentioning that Neomuna is “technically” the first location we can access our vault in-game without a loading screen. Sure it’s essentially a social space, but it’s quicker to get to than the HELM or tower. My theory is that this is a test for a future update/release for either a Steam Deck or cloud-based mobile version of Destiny 2 specifically so people don’t have to switch back and forth between apps.

I have 6000+ hours from D1 Alpha all the way to D2 Witch Queen...Destiny absolutely is a very nothing repetitive game that can suck at it's lowest and at it's highest makes you love singular moments in the game, but overall, it's just meh and for the money it costs to go from D1 Alpha to D2 Witch Queen, I'd of rather spend that money on 10 new, different games than the experiences I've had through Destiny, which again sucks that I can put $500+ into 1 game, 6000 hours and feel like I'd rather put that money into 10 random titles instead and get more out of that than Destiny, that's not a "see what your missing" game, its a warning not to invest.

Lightfall has really kicked the rest of any desire I had to play it because it's equivalent to them adding 30 different spices and sauces to the steak and not knowing why the steak tastes bad. I don't think either of us need to be world class chefs to know why that's a problem.
It also doesn't help that my usual raid team is so dysfunctional and everything anyways that we're constantly low manning raids and it makes all of the raids I do outright unenjoyable. Too much stress having to worry about if I have enough damage and never feeling like I have enough damage just because I don't use starfire protocol warlock.
My answer at this point with D2 is, "Why worry about not having enough damage and stress mysefl out in that regard when I could not play the game anymore?" When I imagine the Destiny 2 development process, I see a wall full of colourful post-it notes with interconnecting strings and timelines leading up to the end of the Light vs Darkness saga. After the reception of Beyond Light, I feel like there was a major re-shuffling of these notes in order to accommodate player feedback on the game systems and also close out the multifaceted story in a satisfactory way. Lightfall is a victim of this shuffle because it introduces so many quality of life changes, closes the story arc of two of the biggest villains (Calus and Nezarec), but ultimately leaves the main story arc on a huge cliffhanger. Similar to TV Shows like X-Files and LOST, they've answered a bunch of questions but left us with many more. It's a live service game though, so there's always time to patch and course correct before the finale. Despite feeling kinda bereft at the end of Lightfall, I'm intrigued and optimistic about the future seasons and Final Shape.

I will grant that the raid feels simple and easy to everyone I talk to.
I have not been able to find a fireteam of 6 people without one or more people who sound intelligent enough to hear them, but in gameplay prove that they have less than no game literacy, people that are, you can only hope, willfully - not just ignorant, but checked out. I'm terrified of being one of those people.
And that's how you spend 90+ minutes on the 2nd encounter letting a stranger try to complete the dark side of the puzzle through 20+ attempts. On Normal mode. I don't know how you keep going. I stopped wasting people's time when I tried to learn after less than 10 tries, knowing I can always try again another day.
This raid radicalized me against giving *any* raid group more than 90 minutes of my time. I have been very patient with peers and strangers for years, paying forward the time invested in me - but from now on? if anyone wants a clear from me, we do it in 90 minutes or less, and I'll LFG on my own time to finish up.

@SpaceBird I totally understand and I know it can be strong I just don't think it offers something we don't have, ultimately the only new gameplay loop is a grapple with little to no advanced movement tech which allows almost no "mastery", unless there's something I haven't seen yet.
As a bonk hammer main I just feel underwhelmed by it. I know subclasses are supposed to be balanced between each other but other than a mediocre grapple and a boring suspend it kinda lacks personality for me?
I loved stasis titan so his speech about it brought a tear to my damn eyes now that I see how far it's fallen, because stasis changed up how the game was played substantially especially on titan, strand just lacks that imo. You can argue that has to do with how broken it was at launch which allows rose tinted glasses but that's the appeal about new stuff yknow.

@SpaceBird I will say I built away from the grapple as I felt it was extremely underwhelming so maybe that drained my fun, combo with the legend campaign experience and just not having fun with strand there I might say I'm being unfair, after trying it out for a couple days I just never got anything to stick in terms of fun, I'll see what I can do with 1-2 punch as I haven't tried that, I did try using my own weapons + a couple other loadouts I saw people taking about online so the cohesion probably wasn't strong.
I might also just be comparing it to solar too hard where it's supposed to be different not better. I can say I've built more into suspending than melee so that probably didn't help.

The campaign story is incredibly mid, but all the QoL stuff is great and I think the seasonal quest lines this year will be solid. Although it made me wonder, when the final shape comes out, will everything be wrapped up in that expansions story? Or will we have to go through the 4 seasons of story arcs? Or could the seasonal story arcs lead to the next chapter of destiny l?

I sincerely hope they stretch out the story over at least 2 permanently added seasons that culminate in a midyear raid that blows us all away. The last 1 or 2 seasons would be wrap up/aftermath as well as setup for the next adventure.

Yo Skillup. I dropped D2 after I had grinded my head off during the launch. I felt there wasn't enough change between D1 and D2 to play any further. I've seen a bunch of Lightfall media and am now pretty interested. I have a problem however. Do I need to buy every dlc to play lightfall? or can I just buy Lightfall and go straight to that? I won't mind buying previous dlcs like Witch Queen but everything is a pretty steep ask.

On the topic of matchmaking, I'm kinda wondering how the new player-veteran player interactions go in terms of making parties. In a lot of MMO-style games, matchmaking is available for higher-level content. Players rarely use the queue system though due to vets not wanting to have their runs slowed down by new players with lower level gear/lack of experience.
Assuming Destiny 2 has similar situations with regards to the new player-veteran player stuff, Bungie might need to implement an incentive system to promote matchmaking when it does eventually come out.

    • @sauceinmyface9302
      @sauceinmyface9302 Год назад

I do know that Bungie is not aiming to add matchmaking for high end content like raids and nightfalls, just an LFG service. The issue of randoms with different goals getting put together is mitigated by just having a post specifying what is happening(sherpa run, kwtd quick run, challenge run, checkpoint farm). People already engage with all of these posts in existing LFG discord servers, and I'm hoping that translates to the wider community when it's made more accessible in future seasons.

The problem I have with Destiny, isn't this expansion or it's shortcomings. It's that we are always waiting for Bungie to "get it" and make something incredible and they never do.
We are still doing patrols? Really? Why? Why is that still an endgame activity. The "just you wait!" story telling is bad and they've been saying "oh just wait tell the REAL bad guy gets here!" for almost 7 years now.
They don't know what they are doing, they never have. Destiny is a great feeling shooter that they have never figured out how to make a whole game around and they aren't going to.

I don't know man I think they really succeeded with the story in WQ, jumping the shark with Lightfall doesn't necessarily mean Bungie doesn't have the capabilities of telling a good story. It just means they shit the bed with this expansion, doesn't necessarily mean they can't return to telling good stories like they did with WQ. I don't know how they messed up Lightfall this much though that's beyond me.

    • @Doomweapon66
      @Doomweapon66 Год назад +1

@@yigzi4623 On the story side of them messing up Lightfall, the best theory I've heard is Final Shape and Lightfall were supposed to 1 big DLC and Bungie decided to split the baby (metaphorically) and rush Lightfall out for money. On the game play side, that part's simple: "You don't need to be a world class chef to know adding 30 different spices and stuff to a steak makes it hard to pin down what exactly made steak taste bad or good."

I played Destiny for its story, world and lore. Never have I felt more connected to the world, to my avatar as I did here. I had my Warlock, my subclass favourite, and then I went into. core playlist, secret missions, raids ets. I have covered every section of it before, and kept playing. At the end of last year I took a look at the game: I didn't connect with subclasses 3.0, core playlists are a shell of what they were, when it comes to seasonal content, while there is quality and quantity there, it often ends up feeling played out as we have grinded it out 1000000x over the course of a season, so when Battlegroudns join the playlist, I often groan I see them again. And now the narrative failures of this expansion. Bungie has stated that the Veil thing will be expanded upon during seasons and additions to Lightfall itself over the year. But that STILL doesn't mean. this was good and moving it to the part of the game I no longer enjoy won't bring me back. Destiny of yore had its fare share of problems, but I felt connected to it. This version of the game however feels like a railroad experience I do not want to be a part of. Play the season or nothing at all.
There are ppl out there who will enjoy this stuff, and honestly good for them/you, but I moved on. I check out reviews, I check out the lore and cutscenes, but other than that... Nope I'm out.

Couldn't agree more. I'm an OG Destiny player and finally stepped away at the end of Nov & uninstalled it. I feel like Bungie has literally sold out. They could have ended this saga by now. Originally there wasn't supposed to be another expansion after Lightfall.
Bungie has dragged the franchise out way more than necessary, just like many TV series outlive their welcome. I think anyone that's still hanging on expecting they will get a satisfactory conclusion to this saga I think is going to end up sorely disappointed. Their sole job is to keep ppl hooked like drug addicts & make money.

It should be noted that Bungie does not announce in patch notes when they're updating the New Light experience. The Cosmodrome got changes to a few Lost Sectors with Witch Queen that went completely unnoticed by the general public, and even hardcore players probably only noticed the ramp leading up to that one LS near where the spider tank spawns. Similar to WQ, Lightfall DID see an update to the New Light experience, with the "Guardian Rises" quest being overhauled to include tutorials on how Aspects and Fragments work, as well as how each individual ability type works, while trickling those features through new sub-missions and tutorials that keep the player from being overwhelmed by how much there is going on in buildcrafting. It's still not perfect, but combined with the new Guardian Ranks structure DOES do a lot to help make the case that New Light onboarding is not anywhere near as bad as it was a few months ago.
I just wish Bungie would MENTION THESE THINGS in the patch notes, so I can tell my friends "Yeah, there's an actual tutorial now".

Still, the worst thing is still there, kidnapping new lights when they log back in and putting them right into the seasonal content/campaign. You have no idea what happens, you cannot possibly understand the story, and even if you finish the mission you are then greeted by a paywall. If you didn't plan on getting into D2, I bet 90% of people would just quit the game after the third out-of-context cutscene being thrown in their face.
