    How are wands made..I think it’s a question that’s long been asked but never really truly been answered. Even in my own 3 years on youtube running this channel, the topic of how a wand is actually made has been a video I’ve wanted to cover for quite a long time..the truth is..I just never really got around to it..but today that changes because explaining how a wand is made is exactly what I’m going to do. Not only that, I’m going to talk about the entire history of wands also so with that being said please allow me to take you back into the world of Harry Potter and while you’re there, enjoy todays video.

    I wonder if the first witches and wizards who had walking staves and canes accidentally found their magic strwngthened when holding such wooden aids. This might be why staves and canes have been reported to have magical powers from Gandalf's staff or Shillaleys to Baba Yaga's cane, and so on. I wonder if Asia magical folk even use twin wands out of the chopstick tradition to make magic. Or possibly from wooden knitting needles to litterally weave and knit magic. Some magic folk might have found that keeping associated items of magical creatures was also benficial, such as a feather in one's cap, a "rabbut's foot",Newt's eye, etc. Eventually the Woden objects grew smaller and were combined with the other magical element enhancers. I my imagination that is how it came about. Combination of magic enhancing wooden objects and magic enhancing fetishes to make some of the earliest wands.

    I don't think a wand requires another wand or even magic to be made, as James Stewart (a Muggle) made the wands for Chadwick and Webster Boot when Ilvermorny was in its infancy. He had a background in carpentry and masonry which allowed him to work out how to make the wands for the boys using the Horned River Serpent horn shavings given to him by Isolt.

      I always got the impression that inserting the magical core successfully would have required Isault Sayre to help him.
      His carpentry skills simply helped form the body of the wand. Issault herself would have had to go pick out the wand Woods by looking for bowtruckles or magically sensing the power of certain trees. Once Isult had provided him with the magical wood and cores his ordinary skills could do the bulk of the work until it was time to implant the cores.

    I've always thought about wand making like any muggle technology. The first wand cores were affixed using a delicate and fine control over the crafter's internal wandless magic, only possible by very naturally gifted witches and wizards, resulting in a rough generation of proto-wands which were in turn used to better bind new cores, only obtainable through the use of the proto-wands magic now possible, to more wands that ended up being better than the first generation. After that the difference would be noticed and a wand crafting specialist class would emerge.

    • @nairbvel
      @nairbvel 5 лет назад +10

      @@richardchisenhall387 I'll posit that it depends on the culture the magic user is raised in. European magics, at least in literature, seem to incorporate wands (or wand-like tools such as staffs) a great deal more than magic from other (generalized) cultures. For other examples, magics in the Americas seemed to be based more on herbalism and/or astronomy/astrology, while some Asian magics incorporate body movements to a stronger degree and classically have a different set of "basic" elements as well as a very different zodiac. (NOTE: I am including a very limited number of very limited examples for clarity's sake; there are plenty of other forms of magical practice in the Aboriginal, African, and Pacific cultures.) About the only magical tool I know of that seems to be almost universal is the poppet/doll, even though they may represent different things in different cultures.

      I was always under the impression that they focus on wandless magic for the most part, but that they do use wands for some stuff. I mean, look at European wizard schools, lots have hard time performing magic without it, so I'm sure in africa, and even Asia and Brazil and the others, that it's the same case

    Remember also that James Steward, a No-Maj, created wands with the help of Isolt for Ilvermorny students. Now that is impressive!

    • @angelwhispers2060
      @angelwhispers2060 5 лет назад +6

      I think we have to remember that pretty much everyone back then had the had some level of Woodcraft skills or someone in their Village that was a dedicated Carpenter. My theory on that matter is pretty simple. He looked at and studied how the wand Isolt had looked and then simply carved wood she told him to carve into a similar shape but with different designs. He would have used a hand drill or a bow drill to very carefully make the hole where the core would be placed. So the physical work of making the outside of a wand is something completely within the skills of a no-Maj Carpenter. Adding the core would have been his wife's prerogative and because the two wands that we know for certain James made used shavings from the Horn of a horned serpent. You're talkin about a relatively small amount of material not something long, skinny and difficult like unicorn hair or Phoenix Feather or even dragon heartstring. Which presumably you need to have at least a few inches worth of these longer materials to get enough inside the wand to do anything. The horned Serpent's horn being a denser material you probably didn't need nearly as much of it as far as deepth into the wand is concerned.
      This relatively easy set being the first wands he made makes a lot of sense.
      Overtime making a lot of them I'm sure he would get more and more skilled at it. But when you consider that no-maj fans of the series all of the world put bits of wood on turning lathe, all the time making wands that look like the ones in the movie and are described in the books. It's clearly a skill that's well within the realm of what someone with no magical ability at all can do.
      What separates wands in the Magical World from things that we can do in real life is the existence and in some cases even control of these magical creatures enough to have a steady supply of working wand cores.

    Nice breakdown for the Potter Universe. But I'm surprised you didnt go into detail on how Rowling chose what wand went with what characters. The woods are based off of the Celtic version of the zodiac. Each wood has characteristic. You can actually match these up pretty well with the owners. But not only did Rowling take that detail, but she also includes the length, which is a big part. She must have done a lot of planning ahead. You can take the length of each person's wand on the books and using numerology, it will give you the matching characteristics of that character. It's pretty impressive that she went that deep into building the foundation for wands and their meaning and how they are matched.
    I also believe each h of the character's names are supposed to match to what kind of person they are in numerology also, but I could be mistaken on that part.

    Man I don't know why, but I find Slytherin's wand to be one of the most fascinating things in the lore. Imagine having such high affinity for snakes that he can pull off the pairing of snakewood and basilisk horn. It seems like an obvious pair but if it was that natural to combine them it would be a lot more common occurrence especially within the Gaunt family who were proud parselmouths

    This what I believe when it comes to wand making.
    As you’ve stated, a wand focuses and extends the power of the witch, or wizard who uses it. And,as you stated, there are two main components to a wands construction; the wood and the magical core within it.
    Wood, unlike a more solid substance, such as a metal, has many unique qualities that make it ideal in wand lore. There are several types of wood and each is unique in its own particular way. For example, each type of wood has its own brand of strength, it’s own type of liner cell structure and density. And each can enhance a particular core in a different way.
    Part of the craft in making a wand has to do with the way a core is placed in it’s wood host. Will it be placed folded in a clockwise, or counter clockwise position? Will it be placed with the narrow end up, or down? And so forth.
    Another consideration is the depth of the core hole in to which it is placed, the thickness of it’s host, etc.
    As you mentioned no two wands are alike. And each who uses it will have different degrees of success doing so based on these factors and others.

    2:50 I like to think that based on Ollivander's comment in The Wandmaker Ch. 24 of the Deathly Hallows, that any instrument can be used to channel a wizard's magic, that the first wands were not wands at all, but everyday weapons such as swords, spears even axes, they would cast enchantments while holding their weapons in battle, and upon noticing a much more powerful/effective incantation, they began to experiment, and thus wands were created
