Light being Light. He was always my favorite character since i was 16 (the first time watching it, in 2010), now i'm 29. I remember him being scarily similar to me in many aspects... even his family was similar; personal aspects too. To these days i never found a character so similar to me in movies or animes, and at the time i even didn't think different from him on the question of criminals... since i was born in Brazil and you see many injustices committed by bandits here; people are easily very hostile to that.
The good he did out weight the bad, stoping all war conflicts and lowed 70% of crimes world wide, thats a HUGE accomplishment bro, he saved so many lives its insanely the difference, no matter his personality or his arrogance or even if he believed to be god, his actions were mostly good for world wide population of decent people and thats why in the end of the manga, its looks like a cult of kira was formed, people believe in his justice.
thats why he never considererd himself evil , thats whats good about death note , is it give us a twisted view of right and wrong , for kira he was doing god work to make the earth good which why he think he is god and justice and anyone who appose him is against justice and should die , but in the other hand he is also an evil by our society standars

This is what's missing from modern-day and old anime "smart characters". There is a reason why Light is still considered one of the smartest characters in fiction, despite the fact that there are probably thousands to millions smarter than him. For example, Aizen from Bleach, the guy is so smart that he can predict almost every single action an entire realm of Soul Reapers will do, he can predict things 100s of years into the future with nearly 100% accuracy. He's the "I knew what kind of drink you'd have every single day since the day of your birth. I knew every single word you'd say too. And I predicted every single word every single person you know would say to you." type genius. Another one is Madara from Naruto. The man can also predict things decades into the future, and plan his own revival and return to almost succeed. Almost the exact same type of genius Aizen is. Then there are characters like Batman, who can somehow predict where a 6th dimensional spaceship will land better than a 12th level intellect. I'm not saying these types of characters are bad or anything. It's just that they're so impossibly smart, bullshit-tier smart that no one in real life would ever be able to come up with their plans. In Light's case, every single prediction he makes is logical, and he would win whether or not he got the notebook back. Because if he gets the notebook back, he wins because he can kill L and stay as Kira. If he doesn't get it back, he'll never remember that he was Kira and live a normal life. Either way, he wins. But there are some uncertainties that he cannot predict, like what Rem does, what Higuchi does, exactly what L will do, what Matsuda does, etc. His predictions aren't precise enough that it seems like bullshit, but also not too vague that he cannot take advantage of them. What I'm saying is that I only think a character is actually smart if it shows the intelligence of the author. Eren's plan in AOT, and Lelouch's plan in Code Geass are some that I can think of right now that are also smart, not bullshit. I wish anime would make those types of smart characters instead of the Jojo "I knew you would think of that so I thought of this and then you would think of that and then I thought of this!"

ayanokoji and yuuichi are one of the most prominent intellegent characters in the modern world. yuuichi's intelligence stems down to how he perceives people through emotions, he can manipulate people based on their personalities. ayano's always one step ahead of others through how he could predict one's actions or strategies as seen in the novel/anime. for old generation, akiyama and tokuchi are one of the most intelligent characters ever. akiyama from liar game was able to perceive others' strategies and conduct questionable strategies but he stays human as much as possible. as for tokuchi, he could read people accurately due to his gambling methods and he doesnt have values so he never cares what his opponents perceive of him. also, he doesnt have a lose streak. i know there are some notable characters like moriarty, arisu and etc but they arent as good as these chatacters

Rem fell in love with Misa, that’s one of the huge advantages of Light. Once L’s gonna win, Rem would kill L no matter what. Even Light planed another way or even nothing, Rem would still do the same thing. It almost has nothing to do with Light. Without those advantages Light would lose rapidly.
