I have a pair of Tannoy Arden's which were fully re-built with Australian Iron Bark timber, which is like making the box with concrete paneling, lined the box interior with pure wool blanket, they are glorious to listen to and the presence is astounding.
Nice to see another pair of vintage Tannoys restored to former glory. I am proud owner of vintage HPD's. Eaton, Cheviot and Berkeley, recapped and reconditioned.. Maybe one day i will have Ardens too. Soon have a listening test with Ardens that have modified cabinets and filters.
This is the best video in a while. What a beautiful restore and what an amazing speaker. This is my endgame speaker and I plan on getting the new version unless I’m fortunate enough to find a local restore like this. Kudos and Thanks.
Agree with socksumi. despite your valiant and impressive refurbishment of a classic tannoy, consider room accoustics and speaker placement. damp the wall and floor...your efforts shall be rewarded. magnificent work!
Great job on the speakers but do something about the room acoustics. Speakers are too close to the side walls. Near field reflections cause time smear and the overall acoustics are too live especially for a small room. Fix the room acoustically and those speakers will sound like a million...
great job :) i have four of these Mk1 ardens circa 1981 that have been in my family since the mid 80s and they are all in need of the paper surrounds being fixed! I have the surrounds but too scared to the swap ! You make it look easy however we have switched to other Tannoys (DMT 15s etc) and ours will most likely be sold :( they are fantastic we used them for many years in private studio and home theatre !! BOOM! Again fab job wish you were my neighbour!!!
@@lashwynter : ohh :( wish you were from Australia. I could have helped you in bringing those Ardens back to glory. They are my favorite speakers and will be happy to see them singing again. You are welcome to visit my place if coming to Australia anytime :)
Ardens are amazing speakers. Don't sell them. Get them restored...Heard Lockwood Audio in UK does a fabulous job in restoring Tannoys. I bought the surrounds for my speakers from UK. :)
I'm going to buy a pair of Tannoy HPD385 Arden Mk1 with new foam...hoping to be my end game speakers and then sell my Spendor S100...what do you think❓
You are right... I should have done replacing resistors, wiring and plugs also. But at that time it was a bit tight together with few other restoration work. So I decided to do them as next stage. Will get them done soon :)
Great job, I have a pair of second hand Arden, Unfortunately the boss is not acceptable and I have tried to improve tit but failed. Any recommendation on this issue? Secondly it has a broken speaker connector but I can not find a replacement one. please help!
I want to tell you that I own a pair of vintage Cheviots from 1978 in excellent condition, but one of them is less efficiency than the other. I thought it could be the right channel of my amplifier, but it is not, so I decided to test them changing one for the other. I always took care of them and never overdrove them but I wasn't the first owner. I'm thinking to re magnetize its Alnico magnets again but i don't trust anyone here to do it and it scares me to think what may be the result of doing that (ohms changed/power of it, color of sound, distortion added, changed polarity, etc). What do you recommend me to do? Please!! I thought to e mail to Tannoy factory to see what they can tell me, but i don't think they would be interested more than selling their new ones. Is there any safe method to magnetize an Alnico again??
@@2ChannelAudio I didn't do that yet. Did you mean to remove one driver from its box and put it in the box of the other one and viceverse to see if the problem it's in the crossover circuit? Didn't you? Thank u so much for answer me.
@@jorgemartin5093 Yes, swap the drivers and see if the problem follows the driver or stays in the same cabinet. If its stays in the same cabinet, its the issue with crossover circuit. Probably a bad capacitor. Let me know how you go.
The initial background music the video is downloaded from some website back then through google search. Don't remember the details from where I downloaded, sorry.

You can´t beat a good old pair of Tannoy. They sound better than most modern speakers i´ve heard.
Yes, its tuff beating them. Thankyou William 👍
@@2ChannelAudio I'm lucky enough to own a pair of FSM. They sounded better than the Westminster which I didn't expect.

Very nice ...got the same beauties at home. They are sublime with vocals like this but boy can they drop bass.

Thanks. Yes, cleaned all contacts, switches and recapped using Claritycap CMR/Mundorf Evo Oil.

Looks like you bought good caps, why not change the old resistors and internal wiring while you were at it?

Hi Ken, Are you from Australia? Tannoy Ardens are beautiful speakers. Which version of drivers in them? Is it HPD385?
May I ask what kind of cables you used? Since the Berkeley’s do use the spring clips as well right?
Using VDH Hybrid 352 in this video. Changed the speaker terminals to use banana cable terminals.
WOW WOW WOW you've done and amazing job and now they sound amazing and your system is amazing and now that makes you amazing.. Lol
ThankYou :)
Thankyou
Beautiful setup.
And great choice of music.
Who is the artist on that piece?
And what is the title to that song?
Track Info:
Song: Speak softly love

When refoaming the drivers, how did you make sure the voice coil was centered? Did you use a test tone or cut the dust cap and shim the voice coil?
Please,, What song did you play at the end? Thanks. I know it's Speak Softly but who's singing it...please
I will listen again and find it. Or try using Shazam

Hi Jorge, Happy to help you with all my knowledge.
I don't think you have to do anything with magnets. Did you try swapping the crossovers?
