    So, why is there a misfire in one cylinder, rather than all cylinders (one plug show pre-det)? I have an intermittent misfire under load (6th gear, 70+ mph, 80%+ throttle, 91-93 octane). Curious what the specific conditions were for misfire on this vehicle. Thanks!

    My 9-5 Aero (320HP) uses super 98. I have had problems in the past by using one time euro 95. And still, after 6 or more refils with super 98, sometimes I (or the Saab) have misfire problems. In the near future I'm gonna change the sparkplugs too. Thanks for your post

    Hey man, I have to thank you so much for this vid. I was about to go invest in a new ignition coil for my '01 Saab 9-5 cause number 3 was showing a miss fire on computer and wouldn't pass inspection. We had purchased the car from someone and was trying to work out the bugs, that being the last thing I could not figure out. I had replaced all the spark plugs without resolve. I was about to order the coil and found your video. May not seem like much to some but I just drove up the road and put the high test stuff in and it ran like a rapped ape. Thank you for your vid.

    I got news for you. The "piston friction" as you call it does not light the gasoline with low octane fuel. Pre-ignition happens from hot cylinder head conditions with carbon build up, hot valves, or hot plugs igniting the fuel before the spark.

    Interesting info! I had the plugs done 10k ago, and she felt lumpy on tick over! I use 99 octane, rolling road tune to make use of the fuel! Tomorrow I'm checkin the plugs and fuses! When I change gear it takes a second for the revs to come down! Really annoying in a 250 hp sleeper saab! It's a 1999 aero 93!

      kaleab2009 well I'm glad you found the channel and for sure lower octane causes pre detonation which will always cause a miss, remember you can always go up in octane but you could never come down well good luck and if you need any help at all in the future just keep my channel handy and let me know

      Eve Lopez Hi Eve, the only thing that sounds like it is of real importance is the air hissing sound that you are hearing and the car shaking a little bit at start up. The first thing that comes to my mind is a vacuum leak from your PCV system. There should be a hose attached to the top of your valve cover that attaches to the PCV. Sometimes, the PCV gets into a "stuck open" position or the hose just simply rots and wears out. Either way, this is a very cheap and easy fix. Your stability control failure is ONLY because of an angle sensor failing to communicate and can be caused by something as low tire pressure, recent wheel alignment, etc so I wouldn't sweat that one too much either. The AC system either has power or it doesn't. There is no such thing as "getting enough power" like the shop told you. You either have power or you don't. The Saab as a whole is an extremely well engineered vehicle and you should get alot of good years with low cost out of the car. In your case, the first thing that we need to do is have you check all of your tire pressure to ensure that this is not what is causing the stability control system failure light to illuminate. Also, unplug your battery for about 3-4 minutes to allow the computer to reset itself so that we can see if you still get those same codes appearing. It is possible that they are old codes that were never cleared. Let me know what you find out on these small tests and we will go from there. Based on what you are telling me and what I am reading on your car, I barely see $100 worth of work, let alone $2,000.

    i have a 99 2.0t saab and ive noticed as the engine heats when the gas tank is half or lower the idle tends to drop then i hear the computer compensate as it kicks the rev higher for a second and then evens out...going to replace the spark plugs now. i have had the car for little over a year and ran regular for first few months and the car started having that idle issue...did some research and have been running nothing but premium but now im having a small oil leak where you pointed at. hope i find out its the spark plugs, this vid helped thanks!

    My wifes 2001 Saab 9-3 has been acting up recently. It started last week end. Ran good then it would run ruff and almost die. Now, it will start and run ruff at idle and very ruff in gear. P0300 came active. I had already changed out the plugs and gapped them to oem. The cassette is good. I also changed out to a know good one. Same outcome. I also installed old plugs and same out come. I cleaned the mas sensor with the mas cleaner. I need to change out my bpc valve as it has failed after installing a new turbo. I checked all vacuum lines and will change out the evap purge valve ones as they are showing cracks. I do not have and O2 sensor codes but will test them out. I put in a new Fuel pump 3 months ago or so. Also the check valves are good but need to tool to replace them this summer to have them done. Fuel I run is 87/89 super unleaded/unleaded. Depends when we need fuel and Costco is open. Any other ideas other then what you found in your video? Can you go detailed then just stopping at the plugs.
    Thanks.

      I would try to go with a higher octane as high as you can possibly get that usually will cure it if you've already changed everything else which it sounds like you have it sounds like you have just a little bit of pre detonation

      Check the fuel pressure even with a new pump (or have the fuel pressure checked) at the fuel rail the pressure regulator can fail , fuel filter clogged or water in the fuel can cause it in some cases..

  • @Keyumiz
    @Keyumiz 5 лет назад +1

    That sounds more like a problem with the cylinder. I'm not a mechanic so I wouldn't know. It just sounds odd that it causes enough friction to ignite the fuel. Sounds like a design error. Is that supposed to happen or considered normal?

    I was using non ethanol which is 91 grade. I also have stage 3 turbo tuned. Just put a used motor in. One spark plug now is being hit I think by the cylinder. It happened right after I left shop. Then again months later. First time he swapped the plug and it ran fine. Second time I swapped plug with identical plug but still runs on 3 cylinders it seems. Can't figure it out. It's not hitting the plug but won't fire on that plug ? I do have spark to that plug when I crank it.

    Hi Jamie, Thanks for education. I have 2003 Saab 95 arc V6. has 2 ignition cassettes. I have Tech 2 tool which shows me that cylinder 1 is knocking count 6000 other all 5 cylinders ok. So I changed all plugs and switched the cassettes, rear cassettes with cyl 1 now moved to front. cleared all knocks count. Drove 65 miles and checked 0- knock counts on all cylinders with same gas of Costco 91 octane,.
    After additional 65 miles. now cyl 6 has 6000 knock count. and others are fine. Does that means this ignition cassette is bad..? I like to have your opinion or Will it go away with 93 gas Thanks. Don't like to spend money on new Cassette. Very expansive. Thanks and my regards.

    Thank you for the video. I purchased a 05 Saab 9-3 Arc, 2.0 Turbo. Got a check engine light, the code is P0303, cylinder 3 had too many misfires in a predetermined period of time. Suggest replacing the Ignition Control Module. Do yo think it could be the plugs and gas also James?

    • @jamiejonesthecarman
      @jamiejonesthecarman  8 лет назад

      since it's specifically the third cylinder I would definitely check the plug very first thing I would do, could be a coil and it could be several different small things but the plugs the most likely candidate right off the bat and then make sure you're using a kind of octane

      +JamieJones TheCarMan I did just thatJamie, found that the 4th spark plug had two cracks up the side and it was placed in there soo tight. This video is awesome! You're a car genius. You opened my ignorant eyes to seeing that I've been using the wrong kind of gas all along. This is most likely why I keep having misfires after getting so many parts replaced while still having the same issues. My 2003 saab 9-3 is having a problem where it will occasionally go on "half boost". The boost gauge will only go half way and the turbo will not spool. I could floor the car and it'll feel like I'm giving it a quarter throttle. Is my turbo going bad? Or is it something else? It does this whenever it wants at random. I hope someone can answer before I buy unneeded parts!

      A 2003 should be pretty reliable because the turbo is water cooled. Turbos tend to stick when using a heavy grade of oil that has not warmed up (not recommended), or if the bearings are worn or coked up.

      It would misfire if you accelerate fast and reach 4000+ rpms? That is what is happening to my 2000 SAAB 9-5, but it runs strong other than that. And I also think it's a spark plug. There is no burning smell coming from the coil cassette or a sound type of misfiring, so that's how I know it's not the DI cassette. I had a DI cassette go bad before and it would misfire, made sound like it's staying stuck, and smell something burning. Mine just accelerates normal and pushes me back a little bit after 4000rpm on max acceleration in which ever gear that goes over 4000rpm easily, but then can resume acceleration. It has a brand new turbocharger and brand new radiator. Started doing that when I changed those parts.

      Hi There, the first thing that comes to mind is that there is air in your cooling system which allows too much back pressure from the steam to build up causing it to blow out the expansion tank.

      This happened to me as well in my 2007 aero wagon. I split the coolant tank in half twice over the course of one summer. Ended up being a problem with the glue sealing the two halves together. Rolled back to my original coolant housing tank that constantly throws 'fill coolant fluid' CEL. Haven't had that problem since

    If you are using too low an octane of fuel there are various pointers to this when you drive the car. 1) Engine starts to ping when under load - an audible metallic sound that signifies that the explosion has occurred too early in the cycle and the force is smacking the piston while still on the way up. 2) You should notice the engine running hotter than normal. Some engines will show this more than others depending on the efficiency of the cooling system. 3) Loss of power. If fuel is igniting too far ahead of the piston reaching TDC then the burning fuel is working against the rising piston (hence the greater heat) and power will be well down. 4) Pre-ignition. This is when the cylinder gets so hot on the inside due to early detonation that any carbon deposits are glowing red hot, thereby acting like a spark plug and igniting the fuel. As a result the engine continues to run for a while after you have turned it off. This is a very bad sign and may require a de-coke to fix.
    If you persist with running with too low an octane of fuel you will eventually blow a head gasket and/or damage valve seats. Bottom Line is that it isn't worth it. Use the correct grade of fuel for your car. If your car has a high output turbo then the relatively high manifold pressure will almost always mean that you need 91 or 93 Octane gas to avoid the serious problems described above, and expensive damage to your engine.

    I have 2003 9-3 2.0 Turbo Linear. P0300 code. Changed Ignition Control Module, Plugs and also filled up with 92 octane. Still has misfire and loss of power. Idles real rough! Sometimes if I shut it off and restart it runs fine. Sometimes it cranks and does not start. It seems to happen only when it gets warmed up. I changed the ICM last night and it drove fine. Lotsa power and fun driving, I was happy! This morning it drove to my first customer fine. Came back out and it cranks up fine but had no power with extremely rough idle. Help!!!!!

      Eve Lopez Hey Eve, you have a few different things going on with these codes and none of these systems are related to each other so it sounds like you have a few minor issues going on with your car. Lets start with this. What are your symptoms? What exactly is the car doing?

    I have a question, i have a 2003 saab 93 vector the day i bought it it was so fast then i had a tune up done and the day i picked up the car i noticed a huge i mean huge lack of power on my receipt it shows they only charged me 10.60 for all 4 plugs is their a chance they put cheap plugs in cause my check engine light has been on since then i doubt they got that big of a discount when the the plugs my car takes are around 14.00 each?

    • @ImMixtah

      yeah I have a vector too. they most likely put in crappy spark plugs, you have to have OEM spark plugs for these cars

    Hello I have a question I have an oil leak and I recently changed the plugs and the last one on the right was fouled with oil. Could this be a head gasket plus I am getting check engine light code for misfire. I guess that would make sense if the plug is fouled out.

    • @jamiejonesthecarman
      @jamiejonesthecarman  7 лет назад

      +Peter Spohrer most likely it's just the gasket seal around the spark plugs they have a tendency to let it boil and if it's on the top now if it's found on the bottom of the plug another word for the firing is actually that's a different story so is it filing at the top or the bottom

    I'm sorry, did I hear that the Saab has a "higher" compression then a non turbo engine? correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that ALL factory turbo vehicles have a lower compression then any of there non turbo versions. unless you boost a non turbo engine without any rebuilding. just my 2cents.

      And it's not friction that causes pre-detonation in high compression/forced induction motors, it's the HIGH COMPRESSION that causes it. The temperature of air rises to unstable levels with lower octane gases when the pressure is increased drastically.

    • @Mogman150
      @Mogman150 6 лет назад

      Yes, the compression causes heat, not (necessarily) friction.

    im sorry but your partially right, youve got predetonation description pretty good. But the turbo saab motor is a low compression motor and you dont see the rise in compression until the turbo spools. now depending how strong an ignition is and how much boost someone is running you may have to gap a plug down some to eliminate blowout. and high octane rating is good for turbo cars until you step into running e85 mixes, cause people would think oh well thats a low number so its going to cause knock and predetonation which is wrong. e85 actually is less volatile like a high octane gas and will avoid knock and detonation better than most fuels, but unless you have your car tuned to run e85 or it comes that way its best to stick with a high octane dino fuel...or run a meth injection kit to raise your octane and lower your knock chance. Also another HUGE plus in my world is that e85 you can make 2x to power on the same amount of boost and cause less damage to a motor...if used correctly. but my main issue was that these motors particularly in the 2.3 turbo, and most, not all but most turbo cars are of a lower compression rating. 8.5:1 8:1 9.5:1, you usually dont get higher compression turbo cars unless they are built so aftermarket.

    I DRIVE A BUICK GRAND NATIONAL AND WENT THROUGH ALL THE SAME STEPS.. AT THIS POINT MY PLUGS ARE FINE BUT STILL HAVE THAT MISSFIRE... THE FUEL WAS A MIX OF 111 OCT. AND 93.. WITH OCTAIN BOOSTER.. AFTER CHECKING ALL THE MECHANICS AND FINDING NOTHING WRONG.. I AM NOW STARTING TO BELIEVE THE LAST 93 I BOUGHT OR THE OCT. BOOSTER I BOUGHT WAS BAD.. AT APROX. 5 GALS LEFT I AM THINKING I MIGHT AS WELL OPEN A FUEL LINE AND PUMP IT OUT.... AND START WITH A FRESH TANK OF SHELL 93 FROM A BUSY STATION.. THE CAR WAS TUNED FOR 93 PUMP GAS AND IS HIGHLY MODIFIED... I AM VERY SCHOOLED AS I ASSEMBLED THIS CAR WITH PROFESSIONAL SUPERVISION... UN FORTUNATELY MY GUY IS OUT SICK FOR FEW WEEKS .. SO I HAVE COVERD THE BASICS AS DID U IN THIS VIDEO.. I HAD OVER LOOKED FUEL AND YOU MENTIONED YOUR CAR HAD LOW OCTAIN.. WITCH SEEMS TO BE PERFECTLY PROBABLE AS MY CAR ONLY MISS FIRES OVER 5LBS OF BOOST.. WHERE IT CAN BOOST 15 TROUBLE FREE BEFORE I BOUGHT THAT GAS LAST WEEK.. THANKS FOR SHARING..

    Hey TheCarMan great video.. i have a 2006 saab 93 aero. And no codes are shooting up; but my car will occasionally sputter on a start up shake and have like a turbo lag, mechanic said it was just from driving it hard and parking for a short time. Also, I think my spark plugs need replaced as i have the misfire issue like this video shows, dealer told me its my coils which I may do myself anyways. Lastly, when I fill up with fuel; the gage drops to empty and when i accelerate shoots back up to full is this just a sensor issue? Once again no codes..
    Any help is appreciated!

      +Ashton Jordan go put some seafoam in the fuel and see if you can clean it up song and I should take care of your drivability issue as far as the gauge that's going to be your sending unit on the pump itself I try to live with until you're ready to switch off the pump because you're going to have to drop the fuel cell

    Nice and simple vid. Thanks. Im about to buy a saab soon and found one really cheap. $1100 for a 2003 w170xxx miles. Says it needs a tune up... plugs and wires but claims it runs good. He doesnt sound mechanically inclined at all. Its automatic and this is a negative but for the price.... well u kno. Im afraid hes been runnin cheap fuel for a while or just doesnt care for her.. how can i tell im not buyin a lemon? I obviously cant take her apart in front of him and sellers arent honest about how they treat their cars......

      osanti1978 Great questions man!! FIRST, a Conquest is my FAVORITE vehicle ever made on planet Earth..lol. As far as the Saab goes, they tend to be very durable engines and the price is right so its probably worth taking a chance. As long as you don't see any smoking (which would be my only concern) you are probably ok. Put some new plugs (doesn't have wires, it has coil overs) and some fresh fuel (high octane) in her and see what you've got. Let me know if you need any help along the way.

      None the less she has decent power bit riddled with little issues.. i had a problem starting it this morning... it took a few tries but she started. It was as if the battery had no juice but dash and everything worked. Finally she turned over and now i have a check engine light. Can that be the CPS? I have a 2001 Saab 9-3 SE and have had no trouble with it. A guy in my lunch group said he once had a Saab Turbo that ran hot all the time and had no power. He dismissed them as absolute junk and told me not to buy one. I know Saab's and know they are well built and highly reliable so I knew he must be doing something wrong.
    The reason for overheating and lack of power is obvious - this idiot was putting 87 Octane in his turbo when the label on the filler cap clearly stated he needed Premium. If he had hung onto the car it was only a matter of time before he blew the head gasket.

    Saabs use a advanced "ion sensing" ignition system that can "to a point" dynamically detect a fuels burning property's within "each" cylinder during the combustion process and adjust for it as a unique feature. it can do this within a range of fuel octanes by adjusting ignition advance and amount of turbo boost allowed it can dynamically detect pre-ignition detonation and will set a serious trouble code if it cant correct this issue The check engine light will flash if this is ongoing ,, a plug with an internal fault or the use of a plug that's not on the list of recommended plugs (and this is critical for this system) alters the shape of that ion sensing feedback signal and can confuse the systems response possibly causing the system to advance the ignition in that one cylinder improperly, but it usually makes the engine run rough as said if you use a fuel below the recommended minimum octane its going to pre ignite from just the compression heat and will cause damage ,, as a rule on cars with ion sensing technology ,its suggested to always check for exact "proper brand/type spark plugs installed, exact gap.. to rule out this issue ..

    @rangersammy 7 лет назад

    almost exactly what was happening with my 9-5!

  • @brianperkins6121
    @brianperkins6121 7 лет назад

    Saab's use advanced Ion sensing ignition technology for knock sensing and misfire detection the Trionic engine management hardware is very fussy about the type and property's of the spark plug used,, in short you must use the exact plug recommended by Saab and its gap tolerance needs to spot on,, had an issue with one and found out the owner had installed high performance aftermarket plugs that had a unique non standard electrode type ,, the ion sensing system 'read" a strange response from this plug and the car would not run smoothly in this case the car thought it was seeing "spark knock" even with 93 octane fuel ,, and it cut turbo boost and ignition advance to the point where it had half of its original power .. this probably applies to any vehicle that uses ion sensing ignition technology check the plugs installed in refrence to the manufactures standards

    Wow man. It's a 9-3 not a 9.3. It doesn't have a high compression combustion chamber design, it's turbo-charged, hence the high combustion chamber pressures. Friction does NOT cause pre-ignition, not pre-detonation. Also if the cylinder is traveling up, you have way bigger problems than fuel quality.

  • @jasonlangmead8418
    @jasonlangmead8418 5 лет назад

    Any turbo gasoline engine should use premium gas, it's not a myth as some say. Pre- detonation is much more than a noise. It's detrimental to the engine.

    recent vintage Saabs all use "Ion combustion sensing technology" in there ignition system for high detail knock detection in real time in "each cylinder" and due to this systems technology one must use only the exact plug specified at the exact gap or it will confuse the detection system software which is calibrated for the unique electrical signature shape of that spark plug type,, we already know it will flag a misfire and set a code , the Ecu can tell exactly what cylinder is misfiring, it does seem strange to me that one cylinder is burning the plug white , while the others are normal , one has to wonder of that cylinder is running very lean due to a bad or dirty fuel injector, it might be possible the system if it detects bad plug misfire in that cylinder (which a Saab 9.3 can do) and might be trying to save the catalytic converter by cutting fuel delivery (making it very lean) to the injector of that cylinder saabs have very advanced combustion monitoring and will adjust ignition advance and boost pressure for lower or higher octane fuels (within a certain octane range don't go below it) lowering engine power with lower octane fuel to prevent engine detonation damage. and will flag the driver with a blinking check engine light if there is a critical combustion issue it cant correct that would cause engine damage if ignored. the ECU will advance the ignition and increase boost to deliver more power with high octane fuel.
