The terms "clean romance/clean books" give me big purity culture vibes.

Agreed! Also, 'spicy romance' is actually what the 'erotica' category was made for 😅

I always struggle with if it's either writer's block or imposter syndrome that makes me not able to write. Because I do want to write (all the time), but self doubt always rears its ugly head whenever I am about to start writing, which is why I put it off sometimes. However, once I start writing, outlining, plotting, etc. the words always flow and I LOVE it 😊
I'm very happy seeing so many new videos from you, Brielle! I love watching them and following your writer journey! 🌶

I get that! Sometimes nerves about the writing being good makes me nervous to write too 🫣 but thank you I’m so glad you’re liking the videos!! Very motivated to pump them out rn lol

1:19 creativity is a discipline. It’s a muscle that you have to work especially if it’s your job. At some point as a writer somebody is gonna be paying you to write, and you’ll be so much better off if you’re consistently working that muscle!

Debunking the trad pub comment: (1) Trad pub authors don't have to market their books if they don't want to. Many do to maximize exposure. (2) We do make less money per book, but on average, we do sell more copies. (3) We do have control over the creative process lol. It's our names on the books. Don't indie authors have beta readers? Don't they hire developmental and copy editors? Also, if an indie author sold adaptation rights (which is less likely) they would find themselves in the same boat as a trad author when it comes to that whole process.

I just love how traditional authors mind their business but there's this air of superiority from indie authors or people who are choosing the indie route. Like there's pros and cons to both, just pick the choice that works better for you personally and move on.

@@arcane9205 I think there are trad authors who look down on indie ones too, but I just don’t like misinformation! Haha

Thanks for shedding light on this and providing extra context!! agree there’s pros and cons to both and it’s def not black and white. Totally personal preference. I love seeing authors get published regardless of the method, both are cool!

I mean, no one has to market their books if they don’t want to, but I’ve heard FROM MULTIPLE sources they are but marketed nearly as well by their publisher as they should be. Though I’m not published currently, I’m just goin off what I’ve heard.

Trying to remember what the opposite of "smut" is on the AO3 fanfic tag searches, because there's a specific word they use. But I do remember the phrase "sugar and spice and everything nice" among authors to connotate "X and Y and everything in between".
TikTok is my archnemesis. It has waged war against the human attention span and thus has warred against me, whose career as a playwright hinges on producers respecting audiences' intelligence as much as I do. If I ever meet Zhang Yiming or Liang Rubo (owners of ByteDance), they will discover the wrath of an angry demigod whose gas smells like peanut butter.
Spoiler alerts are very, very helpful and people have the right to them. However, I quickly settle for a story being predictable as long as it has great execution.

Also, about the clean books hot takes: I’ve heard clean/no spice books being called “closed door romances”. The reason why smut is controversial is because 1. There are people under 18 reading the popular spicy books and 2. There are people like me who just don’t want to read word porn. In my opinion we simply need more content warnings for books with spice. I’ve read multiple books that ended up having spice that I wasn’t warned about.
It’s subjective in the end, but I think that we should at least be warned if there is spice. Especially books where it seems like a wholesome romance on the surface but it’s a bunch of smut 😅

I'm currently writing a romance novel that would fall into that "clean romance" category but I also hate that phrase (so I don't use it when talking about my book lol). It seems to imply that sex is "dirty" and I definitely don't agree with that, I just don't want active sex scenes in (some of) my novels. But my book specifically doesn't lack physical romance, and I think will still give the feelings you crave when you're reading a romance... but no 🍆 ya know? 😅😂
Alternatives I've heard are "sweet romance" or "closed-door romance." I honestly just don't like any of the phrases and think we all need to put our heads together to come up with something else! 🌶🌶

"Clean" romance: Think of.the journalistic term "clean copy." It means "not marked up." So a "clean romance" isn't marked up with other features besides the romance itself.

I think that I prefer “closed door” and “open door” when it comes to describing romance novels. And to the extent that the relationship doesn’t explore bedroom behaviour at all… I guess that’s still closed door.
I totally agree with the sentiment that it suggests spicy books are BAD and UNCLEAN 🫣 However, I also think the term spicy is overused. Like if there’s one sex scene and it’s a couple of pages, that is not a spicy book… that’s just a regular romance.
