Is there such a thing as “the perfect novel?" What if you could somehow take all the best ingredients that EVERY reader loves and combine them all to create the perfect recipe for The Ultimate Comfort Book? It might sound like an impossible mission… but I decided to challenge myself to try it. In this video, I'm going to collect all the most-loved story ingredients (voted on by YOU guys), put them all in the blender of my brainstorming process, and see if I can outline the PERFECT novel.

Also, I know I’m coming in late … but how ‘bout this: the prophecy revolves around the “mirror”, but it’s been misinterpreted. The dragon IS the mirror, as it sees through to the soul of the wisher and reflects their true self back to them. If the wisher can embrace their true reality, the dragon finds them worthy.
Is it okay that I count myself as one of your supporters yet I've never actually read one of your books...? 'Cause I tell my writer friends about you, and got them watching your videos where you give tips and everything, but I kind of feel guilty that I haven't read one yet. (Also I'm kinda broke still from that one bookstore trip I took last last weekend...)

I feel like the soft girl look would be a great disguise for an assassin.
I can honestly relate to this combination a lot 😂
The who did this question can be so layered in this scenario, who left physical scars on her body from her torture but deeper who used that pain to force you to become something you don't want to be (assassin)

I am so fascinated by how fast you come up with an entire outline like that! It seems so simple when you do it. When I try making up a story, I always get stuck on tiny details immediately. Like, I create these problems or plot twists for my characters, but then I can't figure out how to solve them, so I just quit. I think it's really hard to find that balance between too vague and too precise.

Same! I wondered…was all this on the spot or were there breaks throughout the day, then recorded and edited in. I imagine there was time taken to brainstorm something decent to work with.
Thank you! I'm glad this brainstorm process inspired you! ☺️ I agree, getting stuck on the little details can be discouraging and stop the flow state of creativity. I find it's best to file those things under "I'll figure it out later" 😏
I have sort of the same issue but it's a bit different. I have started the same story like 5 different times in 5 different ways, get to a certain point each time & realize I hate everything then start over. I can't seem to make up my mind or get stuck on an idea but can't figure out how to put it into the current story. I've had people tell me don't overthink just write...easier said than done.
Why be so conflicted over whether the idea of a "soft," girly girl could work? Sure, it can-ever heard of the term "pretty poison"? Have her lure her prey to their deaths by way of food and drink, then poison them, probably via some deadly form of flower extract to complete the "pretty" motif. Overt kindness covering covert cold-bloodedness is truly chilling, and potent, so writing such a character is MORE than intriguing to me.
Having her being a poisoner would fit her as also a spy and assassin, and if so, who is she doing this for? What are her loyalties and how was she trained? How much remorse does she feel? The tension and mistrust betwixt her and whoever her love interest is start to write themselves.
A strong female character need not know martial arts nor have great physical strength to have power, folks; why beat them up when you know how to manipulate them? A poisoner and manipulator whilst appearing classically feminine would be a GREAT complement.
What if she's killed someone he seeks to avenge, and they're falling for each other? Or she realizes she has to kill either him, or someone he holds dear? What if she has to comfort him after she's murdered his mother, say, and now he's cursing out poisoners in particular as incorrigible cowards whilst swearing vengeance on whoever did this? There's no easy resolution, is there?

I think this is one of the reasons Abbie got so excited about the plot. She realised quite soon that this is the perfect disguise. Of course hah! :) (just my guess)
That actually sounds like this girl (side mc/mc[how you look at it]) i mean she even has that flower way of killing ... and poison too. She is also a manipulator.... so yes....
And she has got someone killed by another killer who has fallen for her.

I have a book in writing with enemies to lovers, and the girl is an assassin who was betrayed by an evil king.
I almost feel ripped off, but I’m still excited to see where this goes.
I didn’t do the assassin thing or the prince thing, but almost everything else is there, but it spans over multiple books

How huge is your book?
Honestly would love to see this get written. I really love the idea of an assassin woman who dresses beautifully or seems to have a gentle look to her despite her darker ambitions. For one, it hints to another side of her. But also, it'd help her blend into places where she could do her job unnoticed. It shows that she's versatile. The only thing I was kinda sad didn't make it into the outline was the community voted grumpy guy. I think having him be all the things you outlined, including having a "life of the party" and cheerful disposition for his public appearance while being a bit sardonic and grumpy when with her would've been interesting. She can be sharp witted and sarcastic, but she actually does have a sweet side that is gentle which comes out moreso when she's vulnerable would've also been interesting to see.
Yes I agree!! 👏 I feel like most assassin (or badass) female characters fit into this very standard "tough and mean" cookie cutter, so it would be nice to see some variation. And yes, I agree the guy could definitely have a grumpy side that comes out when he's not people-pleasing 🤣
@@AbbieEmmons I tend to love characters who seem all nice on the surface but are kinda dickish. Astarion from Baldur's Gate 3 is part of the reason for that. But yes!! We need more sweet looking, flower loving female baddies!
I feel like the grumpy part of the trope for the guy is heavily informed by the fact that he feels so out of place in his environment and among his family. He obviously isn't accepted by his family and he bears the weight of that criticism. Over years, that can cause a person to go from sunny and constantly trying harder to becoming hard and cyncial inside because they just "know" that they will never live up to expectations and can never gain the approval of the people they most aim to please. That could be really fun to explore for the trope. Conversely, the sunshine disposition of the girl strikes me as manifesting in the story in a completely forced way from the female character. She is laying on the sunny bright positivity to gain the prince's trust and that isn't really who she is, maybe? @@AbbieEmmons

What I like to imagine is that he could be like Mirabel from Encanto. He could be fun and comic relief when he's trying to get people to notice him, but in other moments he is pessimistic and grumpy

Instead of fighting the dragon, there's some sort of reveal of needing intelligence rather than force to get past the dragon - riddle, philosophy, etc. [I'm honestly picturing the climax of the old movie Flight of Dragons if anyone remembers that.] 🥰 Whatever happens I love this so much! [Enneagram One as well!!]
@@AbbieEmmons Is there a profile for plae/setting you would recommend. I'm struggling and I don't like the ones that come with programs.
Maybe the prince can be an outcast AND funny/goofy/charming at the same time because :
1. The king has considered the prince to be unworthy to be king since his childhood, maybe because of some sacred oath, or rite of passage, because of his public speaking fear or something similar.
2. Because he did not have his father's favor, the others in the palace might have ostracized him, like the nobles and his brothers
3. He's awkward, maybe shy because of the isolation and is not the best at socializing, but maybe sneaks out once and meets the guards of the palace and finds loyal friends in them? They might not know that he is the prince, but they're comfortable around him and like him. Maybe he goes to the towns with them and sees the conditions of the peasants and how they live. They could be suffering or something maybe, possibly because of his father's misgoverning (he could be showing favoritism to the nobles), and this becomes something the prince fixes later on in the end when the king is dethroned.
He is funny/goofy/charming around the guards who he's close and comfortable with, but not around the nobles, his brothers or the assasin because he's very guarded
I love the name “Kieran” for the softy, female assassin. The name means, “little dark one”. It fits her personality. The name has a feisty edge, but it is also sweet- a beautiful blend, just like her. ☺️

Prince thinks he's unworthy and goes on a quest to reach a magical wish granting device that will make him a better person -worthy of being a Prince. In his AHA moment he realises that whatver he was seeking, he already has or has earned during the epic quest, BUT not before sacrifing his wish of being king to save the assassin who in turn had sacrificed herself as a result of her AHA moment as she tries to prove herself to the prince.
I'm good at writing this way but it's definitely out of my comfort zone.

It’s so cute she didn’t wanna kill the dragon And the story is so cliché it’s good. But that was a pretty amazing first run at it. Well done!
Just thought of something that might give the story a bit of a twist. Maybe the prince finds out that the dragon is really his mother? The king had his wife banished for some reason, and got a wizard to cast a spell on her. Maybe, fantasy isn't really my forte, but thought that might be an intriguing plot twist. Great story building though, Abbie!
Maybe that’s where the warring clans comes from? Possibly a war with wizards. Or the father’s need to kill the heir? Tied to this whole dragon, wish, and wizard conspiracy?🤔
Dragon lives, Prince gets a loving mom, and even more reason to dethrone the king... Yeah, this seems perfect.

Magic mirrors always act as glamours, not wish artifacts. A mirror that ACTUALLY changes something in reality is such a new concept I’d LOVE to see it.

I'm barely halfway through the video and already think this is the most fun, insane, and inspiring writing challenge to date! What a good time I'm having, can't wait to see the rest...okay just finished it and it was as fun and informative as I thought it would be.
Just followed this to solidify my story that I've been writing for the past 3.5yrs. I always enjoy doing exercises like these to streamline my plot and make sure I'm sticking to my themes/character motivations while I write. Helps to go back to the planning stage sometimes when you've had your head in the writing for so long! Would love to see the friends or strangers to lovers trope breakdown at some point too!

Love this video!! And you should do more writing challenges like this, because it's one of my favorite videos to watch about writing. And I think you did a good job with this challenge. And the ingredients that will make my ultimate comfort book are, a fantasy setting, with characters who don't know each other or hate each other but they have to put their differences aside because they have to team up to defeat or solve a threat that they all have in common, enemies to friends' relationships, dysfunctional families and the sunshine boy/grumpy girl.

This was great! And honestly, the issue of not having time to flush it out meant that inevitably decisions were made where I was like "no, not that!" which just triggers my own creativity. Sometimes seeing what you don't want to happen works even better to show you what you would like to see in your own stories. I've had entire story plotline formulate in my mind based off the times I don't like what happened with a character in someone else's story. Thank you for the brainstorming inspiration!

Ok but how does Abbie make this look so easy😅😭 Thank you for this Abbie, this actually helped me come up with some more ideas for my own story that I'm outline right now! Would love to see this as a series - either (AKA BOTH) doing more polls that you turn into outlines or seeing this one through and showing us your process for taking an idea to outline to writing to editing to cover design + book naming to publishing. That would be SO cool, I would watch the heck out of that series!! P.S. If you actually write this book I would devour it SO FAST😍🤤

Bethany Atazadeh (another RUclipsr and author) did something similar. She mixed up a lot of different story ingredients and planned a book outline. Called it her “butter book” after the term used in 7 Figure Fiction (butter being all the tropes and cool ideas you love about the books you read). This sounds like a ton of fun! ❤
