You should do a video where you go into barns and pick out books you haven’t seen/know nothing about and decide if you read them by the first few pages!
Omg. I disagree SO HARD with the reading in bed comment. I CRAAAAAAVE my end of the day, lay in bed and tune out the whole world, read. It’s what I live for.
SAME. Reading in bed is the highloght of my day/week. My favorite weekend routine is sleeping in, getting a cup of coffe and go back to bed to read in bed with my coffee. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT
Unpopular opinion about “all romance books are the same”, if you read enough of any genre of any media, (video games movies tv etc) they will all seem the “same”. If you read 300 fantasy books you will see the same pattern over and over, same with horror, romance, literary etc. one of the reasons I’m so easily entertained by any mystery book I read is because I barely ever read them so every oneI pick up seems new and interesting.
That's so true. I watch a lot of tv shows and movies (or romance books for that matter) and i always can tell what will happen in those movies and tv shows because theres always the same pattern when you watch closely. I watch all types of tv, and i got good in knowing what will happen, which is unfortunate because nothing is new to me. But my friends are always surprised by the way i can tell them what will happen.
I don’t read romance much, but for me they do seem more the same than other genres because as far as I’ve heard (and people can correct me if I’m wrong), they HAVE to eventually end up together in the end or it’s not really a romance, it’s a tragedy. And most of them seem to follow the same plot structure of meet cute > get together > get torn apart/argument > get back together. To me, that’s so boring and limiting to know the ending and maybe even the entire plot from the start like that every single time. I’m mostly a horror reader, and in those books, while many do have similar themes and tropes, the endings and plot can be practically anything. There are horror books where everyone dies, there are others where they defeat the monster and live happily, and there are countless others with an ending somewhere between there. And you don’t always know which one it will be until you get to it. Often the endings are a bit unsettling, and I personally generally tend to prefer that kind of ending to a happily ever after. From what I’ve heard from people talking about romance, you just don’t get that variety in romance. They always just end up hooking up and the story is just about HOW they hooked up. Personally, I just don’t find that interesting.
@@bluecannibaleyes I think you saying you don’t read romance much is exactly why you have this take. You go on to explain tons of different horror books, I could sit here and type the same for romance or fantasy or historical fiction. Sure usually they end up together but yeah that’s the point lol (and not always true) it’s romance, just how horror is meant to spook or unsettle you. It would be weird to complain that “all horror books are scary!” Think of stories in general, if you break them down most are written in the same plot formation that we are all taught in school. I think it’s only more enhanced with romance because romance is WAYYYYY more popular so of course it’s way more saturated. Romance books also aren’t just rom coms.. and rom coms are meant to be stereotypical. I find that a lot of people who say this don’t seem to get that? there are tons of romance books that have plenty of other themes and background things happening, but if the main plot is romance than it’s still a romance. The “get back together torn apart argue get back together” thing (which in ALOT of cases is not true lol) I could make one up about about fantasy and adventure too, ever heard of the hero’s journey? The plot structure that almost every book is inspired by?? The one we learned in school and would compare random movies and shows too? 😂 it’s all connected. your cup of tea is your cup of tea And yes it’s easier to be more unique and ahve new ideas with fantasy or supernatural horror plots. as someone who has consumed a lot of various genres you will start to see patterns everywhere. I don’t read a lot of horror books but I watch tons of horror,. I predict whats gonna happen in them, when a jumpscare is going to come, the twists etc ALL. THE. TIME.
11:14 I think the reason a lot of books are overhyped is the way the younger generation express their emotions is obsessive a lot of the time. I don’t mean that in a harsh way, but think about it. If it’s on trend they’re obsessed with it - Stanley cups, Ugg boot shoe things, etc. They have to have it or else they feel left out. Same goes for popular books. I must read it so I feel included and have an opinion. Influencers are literally influencing lol
I work at a library and I come across a lot of elders who can’t physically read books because of their loss of eyesight. So they use audiobooks. If you think that still isn’t reading, because they’re consuming books on a different format, maybe check your privilege. Everyone is allowed to consume stories the way that they want to.
This!!! My best friend is dyslexic, hence audiobooks are her go to! You’re going to tell me she didn’t actually read it?? That’s actually crazy and extremely insensitive.
Yes people hating on audiobooks is such an ablest mindset! There are so many people that benefit from audiobooks due of lack of vision, dyslexia, heck even migraines and more
yes! I told my friend that audiobooks are reading because what if someone is blind? And she was saying that it still wasn’t reading and it made me so mad. She was like they are listening to a story, not reading it.
absolutely love destiny’s rant about audiobooks! for people with various disabilities, busy lifestyles, or just who enjoy consuming books in various ways audiobooks are such a wonderful resource!!!
@@madimiss LOL I’ve read 85 books this year. Oops, looks like your assumption was incorrect. Listening is not reading. It’s really as simple as that. They are two different things and two different skills. There’s no shame in saying that you LISTENED to an audiobook. It strikes me as really insecure that people can’t just own that and instead need to make it part of the ‘reading’ club. Reading does not equal intelligence anyway, so there’s no need for people to redefine words like that just to make them feel smarter or better about themselves. It’s just them being insecure about not actually reading, which is silly.
my favorite book of this year did not grab my attention in the first few pages; i almost did drop it but i’m so glad that i didn’t! sometimes a book just needs time to hook you
recently (a week now) i've have been feeling so depressed and my mind is not the brightest rainbow land anymore. your videos honestly made me feel better and i actually ended up smiling after a couple days. Thank you so much for sticking with me without even knowing my existence for 3 years now❤❤❤
i dont think tropes are slowly ruining books. i think its more ruining people's way of recommending books to others, just because they[others] gave a book with that sort of trope a 4/5 star. especially since alot of the time people will recommend a enemies to lovers, but that only be a subplot.. or maybe be too big of a plot for a certain person. As Destiny mentioned (and im adding to), some people are minimising certain books to a particular trope in hopes to get a wider reach
i agree! most of the time you can tell that the first man (apart from family members) that comes into the story is end game. there's no point in slapping another male lead in the story when it's obvious who she's gonna date smh
Exactly completely agreeing that authors should provide trigger warnings. As someone who experiences intense reactions to graphic content, like blood etc ( I was reading about childbirth) While reading, I unexpectedly felt overwhelmed and scared, (Also collapsed in the classroom lol ) Trigger warnings can help readers prepare emotionally and make informed choices about what to read.
Depends on the kind of book, and honestly the cover. Like how most romance books now look very cutesy and childlike, but some are super smutty, those should have spice warnings. But if I'm in the horror section, I don't want a trigger warning list. I know what I'm getting into because I can read the summary, I know it's a horror novel so it'll probably be messed up, and I don't want every aspect of the book spoiled for me.
yeah the negative review hate is so weird! i think a lot of people do get sensitive about people having different taste, but why can't we all look at 1 star reviews of our favorite books and laugh because the reason the reviewer hated it is the reason we loved it? books are never flawless, but if they're your fave it means you can look past those ❤
Negative reviews are completly fine! But alot of people are just rude about it. Insulted authors and those who read them and are toxic. Lime they can just say i didin't like it because.... But some are beign too dramatic and beign mean
what annoys me the most about love triangles is that theyre not actually triangles.. its always a girl with a choice of two guys that want nothing to do with each other or hate each other (and the final choice is usually obvious). if it was an actual love triangle where everyone liked everyone now that would actually be interesting. like give me the drama where all three like each other in all possible combinations and you actually don't know how it could end because it could go either way. what an interesting chaotic mess that would be.
35:30 YES anytime I read a book from like 2015 and they’re saying things no one says anymore like “cool beans” and “rad”… I can’t even enjoy it as much😭
This isn’t an attack on you or any specific person, but I personally don’t like when people say that an author is continuing a series or writing a spin off purely as a “cash grab”. Like you mentioned, this has been said about Jennifer Lynn Barnes a lot recently. But Jennifer Lynn Barnes wrote 20 books before the Inheritance Games. I personally really enjoyed the Inheritance Games, so after reading it I started reading her backlist. I’ve read 9 books and 1 novella that she published before the Inheritance Games, and I really really enjoyed (and in some cases loved) every single one of them. So I’ve never understood why she was never popular or a best seller before the Inheritance Games. The Naturals series was her most popular books before hand, but even that never came close to any best seller lists, even though a lot of people now prefer and love The Naturals series. And so maybe it’s not a cash grab at all, but more of a “fame grab”, but not necessarily in a bad way. And I think that she also genuinely loves writing these books. She’s said in several interviews that she had been wanting to write her “puzzle house” book for several years, but she never had a good enough idea to go with it. She got her idea for a puzzle house book because her dad, after retirement, decided to design (and maybe build? I can’t remember) his families dream house. And one thing that he did while designing it was he asked his daughter if she had any request, and Jennifer requested a secret passage. When that home was built, with the secret passage, she felt her dad in every part of the home. And she began playing the what-if? game and it turned into a mansion with so many puzzles and games built into it owned by an eccentric billionaire. But it took her years to find a good enough plot to go with it for her publisher to go for it. And so she had so much time to fall in love and generate potential puzzles and ideas, so now that she’s finally able to write those ideas, maybe she just doesn’t want to stop and genuinely enjoys it. I’m sure the money is definitely a benefit, but I doubt that it’s the main reason. Also, I believe that she’s said that the Inheritance Games series is the first book that she ever utilized her expertise in the psychology of fiction to write. Other than the puzzle house idea, Avery’s story and relationship with all of the Hawthorne’s is based on the psychology of fiction theory called the Gossip Theory. And so I’m sure she likely loved utilizing both her psychologist brain and her writing brain.
A lot of people are disabled and using their eyes to read is not even an option and people are really out here claiming that their experiences with books aren’t legitimate because they used an audiobook. It’s hateful and ignorant and, yes, comes from a place of superiority. I can’t 🙄
The other HUGE issues I have with people not counting audiobooks is they are essentially stripping people with vision impairment of the ability to read. As a teacher who deals with kids with all sorts of disabilities, it infuriates me to hear this argument!
When you were talking about authors being afraid to kill off characters in fantasy my first thought for an AMAZING author is Brandon Sanderson. The stakes are SO HIGH
I’m the exact opposite with watching adaptations! I’ll watch em if I didn’t care about the book but if the books a favorite, I won’t watch the movie/show cause I don’t want the image in my head ruined!
@@LottieSmalleyit’s good but also a little corny. Ive heard the book is really good but unfortunately I watched the show before I even knew it was based off a book so I haven’t read the book. Wish I would have experienced it the other way around for sure 😏
24:04 honestly this one is so true. Every time I read in bed, I fall asleep reading my book and most of the time I lose my place 😭 it’s actually so annoying
17:00 all these mediocre books are getting adapted, but they'll discontinue really good shows left and right. Like cmon we want continuations not new adaptations!!
@@angbuss trueeee! I sat with so many books I’d dipped my toes in and didn’t like. Decided to donate them to a charity shop 🤷♀️ now I stick to kindle only unless I’m certain! Or I loved it on kindle and want to display it :)
I think listening to an audiobook isn’t necessarily the same as “reading” but it most definitely does not make you any less of a reader that those who read physical books
in middle school, they said open to a random spot in the book. If it interest you then try, if it doesnt put it down. I dont do that often anymore, i usually go look at reviews.
@@michellelangner2033 but if it’s something that catches your attention then your interest is peaked and you’ll want to trying figure out what happens.
13:05 I've had this thought a lot. I really love that we have a community for books no matter which app you're referring to but sometimes books get ruined. I expect a special thing to happen or I try and see why everyone loves the love interest. But at the same time, I never would have found some of my favorite books without Booktok.
I don’t mind a love triangle, but usually in a series. If it’s a stand alone romance book, I’m not as happy about it. But a fantasy series with a good back and forth? Let me pick a side and have some fun lol. I do feel like most of those are obvious about who will be picked, though. Like, I’m sorry to the Gale stans, The Hunger Games is not going to have the majority of the book focused on one guy and then let her get with the less featured one. Same with Twilight, although that hurts my childhood Team Jacob soul. I always said Team Jacob because I would’ve chosen him, but that Edward was right for her. And that was a movie opinion. The books were so obvious I don’t really think it could even constitute as a true love triangle. He could’ve been a consideration of a consolation prize at most.
I like that they are adapting a lot of popular books bc imagine how great tv is going to be in 2025-26 bc everything is going to be based on our favorite books😂🩷
I'm in the camp that audiobooks absolutely do "count" but aren't the exact same as reading, it's a different process. My blind grandmother said she missed reading. I said "Oh you can listen to audiobooks". She told me that she DOES listen to audiobooks, lots of them. It's not the same to her, she misses reading.
DES!!!! It's been a rough week and just being able to chill watching your video while eating some diner is saving everything. Thanks because you are one of my comfort spaces
For the audio vs reading. For me it is absolutely not about superiority. I think there is a difference, because you experience the book differently. This is not something bad. Some books do great on audio and not so much on paper and vice versa. However, I see booktubers listen to a book while doing other things (which is totally fine), but, would the book have been just as enjoyable if you only focused on the book? That is the main reason I would like to know whether it was read or listened to, the difference in experience. We can still talk about the book because we "read" the same thing, but our experience of the story might be different because of the different ways of consuming the content.
No I agree with you. I watch a RUclipsr that always listens to audiobooks and then she always comes back and is like “I’m confused about what’s happening in the book…” and then she rates it.
9:52 i feel like series like BOT and A-CS is different because they have so many different elements. They have found family, multiple conflicts, a comprehensive plot, etc. NOWWWW stand alone cartoon cover romances… if it’s over 200 pages it’s staying on the shelf at the store good bye. There is not enough going on there to take up 400 pages of my time 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼
with audiobooks i feel like it can't be so black and white with opinions. audiobooks don't work for me, i can't follow the story or i zone out and realize i hadnt been listening for 20 minutes, but i wont ever dock someone for listening to a book over reading it.
11:00 This whole discourse about booktok books being trash has a big hole in it. That being...."A BOOK BEING BAD IS SUBJECTIVE!" And besides from that I also feel like we should just let people enjoy what they want. The Hunger Games was a booktok book at some point but that doesn't mean it's trash. It also ties into the whole "just because you don't like it, doesn't mean its bad thing." People can avoid said "booktok books" and have complete control over what they read but STILL proceed to hate on other people for their choice of books?? Like what?? Please let people enjoy themselves. And there's a whole moral high ground thing to it too. If you like "good" books vs "booktok" books you're somehow smarter and better than everyone else, therefore you should put others down? Yeah, no. I read classics like Jane Austen and Elizabeth Gaskell, but let me enjoy modern romcoms Ali Hazelwood and Talia Hibbert too. Even in the fantasy community there's some moral superiority with people who read Tolkien believing they are better than everyone else that reads authors like SJM. It's so annoying. And all this is coming from someone who doesn't even look to tiktok for book recs. I don't like the few books I've been recommended from there, but that doesn't mean im gonna make fun of people who do! People need to grow up! And they say reading makes people more empathetic...
31:57 it’s so funny because I actually went through all of like booktubers I follow Goodreads and surprisingly I actually had the most in common with you and your book opinions so I actually love your book opinions so much!
15:15 and 16:59 - THIS! that's why i dont think every book needs a media adaptation.. it ruins imagination and most of the time completely ignores the book itself like the message and plotlines within. while im happy the author has the success, i think they should sometimes leave it alone. Audiobooks do count as reading, it has the word 'BOOK' in the name and also as someone who struggles to focus sometimes, it's helpful especially with pronounciations and actually consuming the book even if it's in another format. also i think it's okay to have an negative opinion about a book but when the author themselves encourages their fans to go attack that person for having it (even if they weren't tagged in said review) then it's not okay.
As for audiobooks I listen to them all the time and I do think you can say you’ve read a book even If you’ve listened to it! But if we’re being technical than reading a book is the act of using your eyes to physically read a book or screen… so you technically did listen to it but you have “read” the book and it’s the same content as having read a physical version!
I sometimes have strong opinions on book tastes and anything but no matter what, i love watching and doing rant videos about this kind of stuff and its really fun for me to see what other people think about something. Destiny, please do more rant videos like these, theyre soo fun to watch!
100% agree on being able to review books in a less than positive light. As long as you're not an asshole about it, the author can take it as possible constructive criticism.
ACOTAR SPOILER kinda 🚨 34:14 oh my god yes. do i love the acotar core six? yes. but one of them should’ve died. it’s just crazy that they got threw everything without dying.
Evelyn Hugo was one of the first books I’d gotten thanks to booktok but I still have yet to read it and hearing of a possible adaptation is kinda motivating me to wanna get into it now lol gave daisy jones a five ofc and was happy to get the show right after I finished it, such a good show. Also a five
I think looking at those color coded shelves are just so satisfying. However, I can't have it like that myself. I can't find books and it drives me crazy. Also I have a need for an author to have all their books together 🤣🤣
"Jesus loves you. I just want to tell you that a simple conversation with Him is all you need to change everything. Talk to Him; Jesus is waiting for you. He can change everything if you ask Him. Believe in Him, great things He has for you."❤ YOU ARE SPECIAL TO HIM
HARD agree on giving authors more time to write their books. I love a good series as much as the next girl. But I’d rather have a well thought out, developed plot, rather than something rushed that falls flat.
So funny that Beach Read was your example for booktok giving you certain expectations because I read it recently and I feel like I would have liked it so much more if I didn’t know all the hype around it. It was a great book, but almost felt like a flop for me because of how crazy the hype was.
I feel so bad because I just read the grandest game and honestly, I don’t even remember anything in the book now that I think about it. It was fast paced and fun but definitely nothing to go crazy about. I think I read it in one sitting too
A girl literally picked a fight with me in a comment section because i said that acotar is not bad, it’s just not for everyone and she argued with me saying that it was “objectively” bad, that if i read for entertainment i have no saying in the matter, that i lack comprehension skills 💀💀💀 Because a book leans towards the commercial, simplistic side doesn’t mean that it’s bad
“If you read for entertainment you have no say” … What? I don’t understand this; reading fiction is for purely entertainment and personal enjoyment?!? That’s what reading is for
@@M_edits_3 exactly! That’s what i think too, they were implying that because i read for entertainment i can’t be critical, like reading is this superior elitist hobby 💀
Because I was so busy with college and my first year teaching at the time, I had to soft DNF a book I was really enjoying. I was about halfway through. I’m the kind of person where I have to reread things from the beginning if it’s been longer than a couple of weeks. I have the hardest time rereading the first two chapters of Book Lovers after the prologue, even though I enjoyed them well enough the first time around. I’m just waiting on Charlie to appear 😂 I can see both sides to wanting to put a book down if the first few pages don’t hold my attention though. I’m usually interested from the beginning of a book, so if I’m not, there may be something wrong. It depends on how interested I am in the summary if I’ll stick with it.
When a book is published, the piece is essentially out forever, no take-backs. That being said, authors need to take time with writing their books to articulate the messages meaningfully and perfect their craft efficiently instead of some halfway rushed mess that ends up being a fallen flat disappointment!!
I personally think that even if a review is worded badly or is done in bad faith, the creator is ALLOWED to have their say. We may not have to LIKE it but policing thoughts and speech is dangerous territory
No you need the kindle clicker!! Last night I was reading in bed and refused to hold anything. Propped my kindle up. Had my clicker- read 15% of my book and fell asleep. Perfect night.
The way I see the interitance games books is the original trology was avery's story. The Hawthorne Brothers was rhe conclusion of Jameson's story/Beginning of Greyson's story with hos sisters. The grandest game is a continuation of Greyson's story.
I loved the book Good Girls Guide to Murder (5 star read for me) and absolutely hated the show. I stopped it 1/2 way through the first episode. It was nothing like the book.
i got the preorder of grandest games but since preorderning and receiving it, my thoughts on the world have changed so i decided to donate it- can't believe so many books by her in that world are coming out so soon after each other (like the point about rushing releases)
I'm one of those people who doesn't care about the perspective of the book. Ik that some people feel like 3rd person isn't as immersive or it's just not as personal, but I highly disagree bc when you're reading a book in third person, you're reading about feelings and thoughts that even the characters themselves don't realize they're having, and there's something so deeply personal and connective about that to me.
I think purely focusing on positives and just keeping quiet about the things you dislike makes discussion so stale. I literally hope people will have other opinions than I have because that keeps the conversation going. I do not constantly wanna gush over any media. I am a music fan moreso than a reader and there is nothing better than talking about an album I love with someone who doesn't. It gives me different perspectives and actually causes me to understand and like the work even more
YES! About love triangles: when I read the wings book series by Pike (forgot her first name) when I was in middle school, it had a love triangle between a human and a fairy and I was SO angry at the person the fmc chose, and after that I have a negative viewpoint of love triangles because I’m afraid they’ll pick the wrong love interest that I hate 😂
My opinion on audio books even though I don't personally like them cause I don't really like the people who read them, Buuuuut I think they are awesome because what you said is very valid and never thought of it that way lol, there are alot of people out there who are blind or trouble with sight, dyslexic or can't even read, so for them too enjoy a book that most people can read without being left out
Sarah A. Parker is doing a good job, of putting the next Moonfall book publishing date to October 2025. It gives a good amount of time to do a good job in making the next book the best. And since its up for preorder now, people can feel like it's coming quicker because they preordered it.
Girl same I haven’t seen it ends with us myself but from what I’ve seen on RUclips it’s better than I expected and I also have yet to see GGGTM despite loving the first book but I have seen teasers and I don’t wanna cringe or have it get ruined by the show. I am obsessed with daisy jones and the six tho, so good and I’ve seen it like three or four times now
If you want more characters to die in your fantasy books, you should read red rising or game of thrones. Also, there is a big difference between YA and adult fantasy. If you want a more butal world, read adult fantasy. (But, I also feel that somethimes more characters should die or at least get wounded very badly)
I have adhd and I cannot sit and physically read a book. I looovvee reading but I just can’t do it. Then I discovered audiobooks and felt so excited to be able to enjoy reading again. That’s what brought that spark back for me ❤
Reading in bed works a lot better with those backrest pillows that have the arms lol I have one and it really makes a difference with getting into a cozy position in bed and to hold a book! ☺️ Otherwise reading in bed isn’t my favorite spot either
A co-worker of mine did not read books and suddenly after summer vacation she came up to me(she knows I read/listen all the time) and said I started listening to a book called ACOTAR and I was so happy! Not that she was listening to ACOTAR but that she was consuming books!!!! I love when people fall in love with reading❤I said if you want recs, come to me😄and now she is talking so passionately about all the books she is listening to and it makes me so happy❤❤❤❤No matter how you consume books you are reading!
I love this video and my bedroom is my safe place so I love to read in my bed and I love my kindle, I love my books as well .The audiobook part I agree with you it's all the same sometimes I have a headache or my eyes hurt from staring at a computer for work all day I just want to sit or lay down, put my overear headphones and get lost in my story or I am a mom doing dishes, laundry, sweeping mopping and still able to finish a book is my happy place ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
The one about the internet famous books is such a good point for me. Going into the manga/anime realm for a bit, when I heard about Attack on Titan I heard nothing but great words about it, it seemed like such a special work but when I watched the anime and read the manga it was not at all how people made it out to be. It was good, just not as great as I foolishly hoped it would be.
I completely agree that romance and fantasy books are completely formulaic, and that fantasy authors don't kill off their main characters for good (I'm not even concerned when a main character dies because I know they will come back to life in some way).
I love audio books. Especially when they're done well! I walk dogs for a living and drive a lot so it helps. Plus I use the kindle app on my phone and can read on the go😂
heavy on if they’re done right. I have started so many where the voice actors are horrible and sound like robots 😭 but with good voice actors I LOVE audiobooks
I hate how fan art is always so perfect. For example I imagined Violet Sorrengail from Fourth wing way differently than how the fan art is made. In the fanart she almost looks like a perfect barbie sometimes. Very small, skinny and a perfect face. In my head, shes indeed small but has soms curves (especially in the beginning of the book). These curves are delicate and shes soft and "breakable". Her face is also a bit more round with big round eyes and smaller but round lips. She has some super light freckles. Her cheekbones aren't super defined. Her hair also isnt perfectly smooth either. She has subtle waves in her hair and its not perfectly in a braid she has some bits and pieces sticking out because she mostly does her hair herself and shes a rider, constantly in the wind. She isn't this strong masculine woman with very adult feminine features. To me she has a rounder face, more squishy and soft. I hate the fan art of many men and women, they're way too perfect.
You can pick up an external hard drive for pretty cheap to avoid those issues! I personally use a couple LaCie rugged drives, plus a 5TB Toshiba drive. SSDs are best, but they’re a worthwhile investment:)
It's soooo ableist to say audiobooks don't count as reading! For a lot of people with disabilities it's the only way they can read. I agree it totally doesn't matter how you absorbed the content
If anyone brings up the audiobook debate, I make sure to point out that not everyone can physically read a book for a vast variety of reasons. That’s such a rude stance to take regardless, but it’s also ableist. When I was a child, physically reading gave me the WORST migraines. My dad read all my school books to me until middle school, or I listened to audiobooks. I had eye issues too, but hated wearing my glasses. So many problems popping up that prevented me from physically reading, and so many people with negative opinions about the way I took in that content for school, because obviously if my dad was reading the book (out loud) that meant he did my homework? Never happened. I’m so glad I can read physical books now, but I still love my audiobooks, and I love how inclusive it is for people with disabilities and people who are too busy for whatever reason to sit down for hours on end and read. ❤
14:01 the Netflix adaptation of AGGM ruined the series for me. I read the first book in the series before the show was released and it was one of my fav books but after watching the Netflix series, I struggled to get through the rest of the book series. However, I watched Shadow and Bone before reading Six of Crows and SOC smaaaacked!
You should do a video where you go into barns and pick out books you haven’t seen/know nothing about and decide if you read them by the first few pages!

Excellent point! There is a huge benefit to reading across all genres.
😂 it’s all connected. your cup of tea is your cup of tea
And yes it’s easier to be more unique and ahve new ideas with fantasy or supernatural horror plots. as someone who has consumed a lot of various genres you will start to see patterns everywhere. I don’t read a lot of horror books but I watch tons of horror,. I predict whats gonna happen in them, when a jumpscare is going to come, the twists etc ALL. THE. TIME.
@@wxrxw same here! I watched so many movies in 2020-22 that I became such a film prude! 😂 suddenly I’m judging the cinematography and lighting Lmfao.
Im part of the ‘younger generation’ and totally agree with you. I can see that happening to the people around me
THIS!!
I work at a library and I come across a lot of elders who can’t physically read books because of their loss of eyesight. So they use audiobooks. If you think that still isn’t reading, because they’re consuming books on a different format, maybe check your privilege. Everyone is allowed to consume stories the way that they want to.
So right. Audiobooks are a blessing in many ways ❤
This!!! My best friend is dyslexic, hence audiobooks are her go to! You’re going to tell me she didn’t actually read it?? That’s actually crazy and extremely insensitive.
Exactly! My grandpa was blind for the last 17 years of his life and he read over 4000 books via our state's books-on-tape program in that time.
Not even 5 seconds in i said "okay miss freddy kruger" ..... love you queen
this might seem weird lol but i thoughts she was giving Garfield the cat
Pop off on the audiobook comments Destiny! 👏👏👏 it’s so annoying when I see people say it’s not “real reading”. Like who hurt you 😂
Those people haven’t read a book in years… ironic since they like to sit on their moral high ground
Thank you so much for sticking with me without even knowing my existence for 3 years now❤❤❤
i feel the same, i hope your week starts looking up
i dont think tropes are slowly ruining books. i think its more ruining people's way of recommending books to others, just because they[others] gave a book with that sort of trope a 4/5 star. especially since alot of the time people will recommend a enemies to lovers, but that only be a subplot.. or maybe be too big of a plot for a certain person. As Destiny mentioned (and im adding to), some people are minimising certain books to a particular trope in hopes to get a wider reach
I refuse to even give a book a chance if there is a love triangle. I REFUSE.
Yesssss! Thank you! How about some loyal folks for once. Please!
Yeah same, I just don’t buy that you’re truly in love with someone if you can’t decide between them and someone else
i agree
i agree! most of the time you can tell that the first man (apart from family members) that comes into the story is end game. there's no point in slapping another male lead in the story when it's obvious who she's gonna date smh
another opinion: authors should put trigger warnings and spice warnings in their books
Exactly
completely agreeing that authors should provide trigger warnings. As someone who experiences intense reactions to graphic content, like blood etc
( I was reading about childbirth)
While reading, I unexpectedly felt overwhelmed and scared,
(Also collapsed in the classroom lol )
Trigger warnings can help readers prepare emotionally and make informed choices about what to read.
they do put tw
really? they usually do. It's like right before the first page.
Depends on the kind of book, and honestly the cover. Like how most romance books now look very cutesy and childlike, but some are super smutty, those should have spice warnings. But if I'm in the horror section, I don't want a trigger warning list. I know what I'm getting into because I can read the summary, I know it's a horror novel so it'll probably be messed up, and I don't want every aspect of the book spoiled for me.
spice warnings would be great!!
yeah the negative review hate is so weird! i think a lot of people do get sensitive about people having different taste, but why can't we all look at 1 star reviews of our favorite books and laugh because the reason the reviewer hated it is the reason we loved it? books are never flawless, but if they're your fave it means you can look past those ❤
Negative reviews are completly fine! But alot of people are just rude about it. Insulted authors and those who read them and are toxic. Lime they can just say i didin't like it because.... But some are beign too dramatic and beign mean
15:15 I can’t even look at Pinterest fanfiction images. They ruin my image I created in my head.
what annoys me the most about love triangles is that theyre not actually triangles.. its always a girl with a choice of two guys that want nothing to do with each other or hate each other (and the final choice is usually obvious). if it was an actual love triangle where everyone liked everyone now that would actually be interesting. like give me the drama where all three like each other in all possible combinations and you actually don't know how it could end because it could go either way. what an interesting chaotic mess that would be.
it’s not exactly the same but this kind of reminds me of the challengers movie. If you haven’t watched it I highly recommend!!
@@alttorii 👀
Sounds like a polycule waiting to happen (I'd probably eat it up)
35:30 YES anytime I read a book from like 2015 and they’re saying things no one says anymore like “cool beans” and “rad”… I can’t even enjoy it as much😭
This isn’t an attack on you or any specific person, but I personally don’t like when people say that an author is continuing a series or writing a spin off purely as a “cash grab”.
I can’t 🙄

Unpopular opinion: Thought provoking books are escapism for a lot of us.
Sad books are also escapism for a lot of us as well.
Both are enjoyable.
Me too!!! I’m scared to watch the firefly lane tv show on Netflix 🫣
33:00 especially if the book is longer! I NEED closure on that couple or book after reading so many pages about them/it.
i agree with brother sidwell 10000%. I DNF a LOT of books at the start (almost always libby borrowing)
and it's always so disappointing when it's not a libby book but your actual purchase and you realize you hate it 😒
@@angbuss trueeee! I sat with so many books I’d dipped my toes in and didn’t like. Decided to donate them to a charity shop 🤷♀️ now I stick to kindle only unless I’m certain! Or I loved it on kindle and want to display it :)
I think that the desire to categorize genre is a bigger ‘problem’ than tropes. Lots of the best books I’ve read transcend any one genre
i kind of agree with this, but you need some sort of organization system. that’s why a lot of books are categorized under multiple genres.
I love your sit down videos!
I love hearing your thought process as it is the MOST FASCINATING thing
My theory is that the romance books are getting longer because kindle unlimited pays the authors per page read
Wow! I’ve never heard of this, but it’s interesting. I’d be so worried about spoilers lol.
@@michellelangner2033 but if it’s something that catches your attention then your interest is peaked and you’ll want to trying figure out what happens.
I still hope you do a video where your niece Mila picks your TBR. Would love to see you review my mom’s books Des.❤ I love you.
Her ocean blue eyes
I like that they are adapting a lot of popular books bc imagine how great tv is going to be in 2025-26 bc everything is going to be based on our favorite books😂🩷
Another take on audio books count: what about people that have learning disabilities, eye/vision problems, or are blind. Audiobooks do count IMO :)
8:09 my thing is I’m a self insert girly. The perspective doesn’t matter, it’s me in different forms 😂
DES!!!! It's been a rough week and just being able to chill watching your video while eating some diner is saving everything. Thanks because you are one of my comfort spaces
I really love 3rd person pov because i developed reading habit from fan fictions when i was teenager and all the ff are written in 3rd pov...
Omg as an avid fanfic reader teenager i feel this
For the audio vs reading.
I think it's the same. We still consumed the same book. And people who can multitask and need different things to pay attention.
This is what i tjink too
No I agree with you.
There is not enough going on there to take up 400 pages of my time 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼
17:33 that smooth taylor reference tho 👏
with audiobooks i feel like it can't be so black and white with opinions. audiobooks don't work for me, i can't follow the story or i zone out and realize i hadnt been listening for 20 minutes, but i wont ever dock someone for listening to a book over reading it.
i love color coordinated bookshelves too!!!!!
“Still mentally struggling…that’s not changed 😀” same girl same
Romance books aren't dying, they just need a little revamp? Some new tropes and settings or something cause everything now is so overdone
ACOTAR SPOILER kinda 🚨
34:14 oh my god yes. do i love the acotar core six? yes. but one of them should’ve died. it’s just crazy that they got threw everything without dying.
13:53 YES I’ve never watched the tv or movies to my favorite books. It always ruins it for me personally. That’s why I’m horrified about ACOTAR
17:40 we love the exile taylor refrences
I feel so bad because I just read the grandest game and honestly, I don’t even remember anything in the book now that I think about it. It was fast paced and fun but definitely nothing to go crazy about. I think I read it in one sitting too
A girl literally picked a fight with me in a comment section because i said that acotar is not bad, it’s just not for everyone and she argued with me saying that it was “objectively” bad, that if i read for entertainment i have no saying in the matter, that i lack comprehension skills 💀💀💀
Because a book leans towards the commercial, simplistic side doesn’t mean that it’s bad
“If you read for entertainment you have no say”
…
What?
Thank you for being here for so many people Destiny. You do so much for me from just you being yourself.
It gives me different perspectives and actually causes me to understand and like the work even more
The reading slump little giggle was hella relatable!
My opinion on audio books even though I don't personally like them cause I don't really like the people who read them,
Buuuuut I think they are awesome because what you said is very valid and never thought of it that way lol, there are alot of people out there who are blind or trouble with sight, dyslexic or can't even read, so for them too enjoy a book that most people can read without being left out

Me personally don’t kill off my main characters, I hate it. I want to be happy
14:12 Daisy jones and the six adaptation was soo good. Glad I read the book first before watching it though.
The one about the internet famous books is such a good point for me. Going into the manga/anime realm for a bit, when I heard about Attack on Titan I heard nothing but great words about it, it seemed like such a special work but when I watched the anime and read the manga it was not at all how people made it out to be. It was good, just not as great as I foolishly hoped it would be.
i could listen to des talk for hours
An epilogue is like when you watch a romance movie and wonder if they stay together… the book can actually answer that for you!
I completely agree that romance and fantasy books are completely formulaic, and that fantasy authors don't kill off their main characters for good (I'm not even concerned when a main character dies because I know they will come back to life in some way).
also thrillers !!! they always have a formula !
@@briellejade._ I agree with that. There have been 1 or 2 audio books where I just couldn't get into it. And it got dnfed
OMG FINALLY. SOMEONE WHO DOESNT HATE THE PREGNANCY TROPE
Get the kindle clicker thing! I felt the same way but there have been some nights when it’s the only thing that got me out of a book slump.
LOVE AUDIO BOOKS! I completely agree with you on this, who cares how you read?!
