I’m sorry but Black Rainbow completely caught me off guard. Seriously, it sounds like something a high schooler would make with GarageBand.
Funnily enough, due to the demos using Logic Pro instruments, which are mostly the same as GarageBand instruments, all of these except the ones that date back to Tally Hall sound like GarageBand music.
@@grayanddevpdx what’s more is that some of the songs in the final album *still* use apple sound fonts, some examples off the top of my head being the vintage mellotron strings towards the end of Isle Unto Thyself and *the* brass soundfont during Space Station Level 7, of which I think is specifically either the “Full Brass” sound or the “Trumpet” sound
i have an idea 😼
that's the beauty of demos
white ball and black rainbows are so stupid sounding i love them so much
had me laughing through my hands
i heard white ball was meant to be after mind electric thats probably why they gave joe a goofy voice
White Ball’s glitchy voice is actually because Joe didn’t have a female singer for the song and had to poorly pitch up his own voice, leading to glitches between the pitch and formant.
funnily enough, i actually do what they did with black rainbows when i have ideas for song. i sing it before i forget it, which usually means im shitily beatboxing off beat and mumble singing really badly lmao

@@subwoofer9814 As an advanced speaker, I gave translating what he said a go;
I sit practically defeated. It was hard, far more challenging than I expected, as I assumed I would quickly translate something not even a minute long before I moved on with my night, only to spend half an hour bashing my head against a wall. Because not only is he not a native or experienced speaker (and it shows in his pronunciation), but the filters and background noise made it even harder to parse (I've always been terrible at understanding lyrics in Hawaiian music because of the instrumentals and the fact that most people who sing Hawaiian music don't actually speak the language).
If my translation is correct (which there's no guarantee because I am exhausted and my mental faculties aren't working at full capacity), then what he's saying isn't crazy eye-opening and answers anything relating to the album's story. It's certainly more complex and has that trademark Hawley cryptic lyricism lacking in the final.
This is what I got out of it.
First Verse
This first verse is by far the easiest. ʻEleʻele means black. It can also mean dark, but pō is usually added beforehand in that context. So I'm more confident in him meaning black as in color.
ʻEleʻele (x4)
Black (x4)
Second Verse
ʻEleʻele obviously means black, and polū is a loan word meaning blue (coming directly from the English word blue (blue > bolū > polū), but I honestly am not sure what he was trying to say after that. I tried raising my volume, slowing the video to 0.25, and scouring every resource I had, and I couldn't find a satisfying answer. My best-educated guess is that he's saying "Hau nui" (Great cold/Incredibly Icy). So it might be "incredibly icy blue." But it could be instead of "hau nui" being an adjective (Oh yeah, adjectives come after nouns in Hawaiian, thought I should clarify that,) it could be an independent statement altogether, "hau nui" can also mean "great/heavy/plentiful snow," which I think would make more sense seeing as snow is mentioned a few times in the album, so I think that interpretation is more likely.
ʻEleʻele, polū, hau nui (?)
Black, blue, great/heavy/plentiful snow
Third Verse
His pronunciation vexes me with the third verse. At first I thought he was saying "aniani ā" (aniani meaning "clear"/"transparent". The "ā" would've been added to improve the song's flow and doesn't mean anything. But as I listened to it more, the more I questioned that interpretation, it sounds like he's using an "h," so it could very well be that he's saying "Ahi ʻānia" (scorching/hot flame) I'm not confident with that because he doesn't pronounce the ʻokina (the glottal stop or pause), but it could very well be because he isn't an experienced speaker, and he's underpronounced or even left out the ʻokinas in words in both the demo and final, so I'm most confident in him meaning "Ahi ʻānia." this is immediately followed with "poni," the knee-jerk translation would be "purple" as that's the most common use of "poni," but I feel like "purple scorching flame" while coherent, I don't believe makes sense in the context of the song, so I believe he might be using the less common meaning of "colored." Unfortunately anything past that is unintelligble as the rest of the verse is drowned out in the accompanied singing. The only thing I can hear is (???)-Olū, which doesn't immediately point to anything, and to be honest, I don't want to spend another 30 minutes listening to that 5-second loop trying to parse out what he's saying below the screaming. So this is what I think is the most likely translation of what I can hear.
Ahi ʻānia poni - (???)
A colorful, scorching flame - (???)
Fourth Verse
This verse starts off easy. I think he starts off with "Ka lipo, KA LIKO," Which would mean "The darkness (as in the absence of light), The Glow/sparkling" (If this translation is correct, then he made a typo by saying ka liko instead of ke liko (Hawaiian has two versions of The (singular), and for whatever reason, liko in this context uses ke. That could imply that he didn't intend to use liko to mean glow/shimmer, but I can't see any other interpretation of liko fitting here, especially since it contrasts nicely with lipo. Unfortunately, this was the easiest part of the verse.
At this point, I have been thoroughly worn down by this exercise, my exhaustion is making it hard to think straight, and I'm so tempted to give up. I am so close to the finish line, yet I can't make out what the hell he's trying to say. I swear, every time I relisten to it, it sounds different. Sometimes I hear liko, other times I hear ikō, sometimes I hear "ʻānia nio," or "aniani o," or even "a nani nō" It's so hard to tell because of his damn pronunciation. I might return to this part at a later date when I'm more mentally ready. The last part of the verse is easy. He simply repeats "melemele," meaning yellow.
And that's my sorry attempt at translating. I'm sure I got things wrong and undoubtedly embarrassed myself in front of the 3 other Hawaiian speakers who listened to Hawaiʻi Part ii. When I first heard Black Rainbows (the final one, that is) and, to an extent, the album in general, I felt that Joe was simply using Hawaiian language and culture as an aesthetic, outside of the repeat of basic colors in Hawaiian, there is nothing else in the album that feels distinctly Hawaiian, he could've easily changed Black Rainbows and renamed it "Guam Part ii" or "Japan Part ii" and the story would largely be preserved. So many pieces of media suffer from this. People love the Hawaiian aesthetic but don't care enough to include anything with substances.
But listening and translating this demo made me realize that it was probably best Joe Hawley kept the use of Hawaiian to a minimum. If he added any more, I probably would've gone as insane as the protagonist trying to glean any meaning from his cryptic lyrics and non-native pronunciation (As much as I shit on his pronunciation, I will say it's better than most tourists/haoles, which, honestly, isn't saying much. He could gain a semi-competent accent with a few months of practice.
Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed my descent into pain. If I get enough requests, I'll maybe give it a second look, and if anyone else has any meaningful understanding of ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, feel free to share your own interpretations/insult my comprehension abilities.
Okay, I'm going to go pass out now.

@@AbsnormalCoolest there is no story to the album, anything about a story is either theory or false information
Due to the lyric changed in the first three songs, Hawaii: Part I (these demos) makes our main character come off a lot more selfish. He's talking about himself, not him and a lover. Murders and Mind Electric also make it seem like Simon is indeed guilty for the death of his lover, while it's a bit more ambiguous and, in my interpretation, debunked in Part II

its good in the same way TME is good
it tells the story + its better as art than music (I'm not saying either is bad I'm just saying with all the errors, pauses, and other chaos in both songs it probably doesn't qualify as a good music piece by most "objective" standards)

@@razielmauro9559 :(
@@SinHawaii (Taken from Genius lol)
The song, also known as “Our Lullabye”, with an 'e', is the first demo to “Stranded Lullaby”. This version was originally made by Joe Hawley near April of 2003, around the release of Tally Hall’s first EP, “Party Boobytrap”. Before it was rewritten to become Stranded Lullaby for the Hawaii Part II album, the song was made for his girlfriend at the time, who had to move away to pursue her law degree. he was of course heartbroken.
The lines are drastically different in this version compared to the final. This take of the song was created before Joe Hawley got Allison Hanna to join in on the song production, as seen in the second demo of Stranded Lullaby
Held together by duct tape and glue, and brought to life by memories and hope. Hope that someday, *it* will come back.

Listening to this version of stranded lullaby made me cry over the fact we’ll never get tally hall back now. We’ve lost the Joe we once knew. I’ll miss that Joe. I don’t know what changed in him but I’ll forever mourn the loss of that “creative joe we once knew”. I’ll pray the victim(s) can live good lives. I’ll miss you tally hall.
i just met this band this year, but this fact hurts me sm
It’s not my place to talk about this, nor is it any of our places obviously, as we don’t know him personally- but I don’t think this is something new. I think Joe had been on a downwards spiral. I cant exactly remember where I got this from but I’m pretty sure he’s been battling mental illness for years. My full support goes out to the victims, y’all are strong for dealing with that stuff, even if I’m not super familiar with what happened. I just hope Joe is seeking help, but something tells me that the whole situation probably made his mental state worse. Again, though, I don’t know him personally, and it’s not my place to be talking about that.
I miss Tally Hall, but the most we can do now is keep the fandom alive. If we let it die, then we’ll have nothing left at all
victims?? what happened i’m new to tally hall and miracle musical
@@cherrypawz678there weren't any victims...* there were claims that he groomed and/or chatted with minors and apparentely harassed somebody by not putting his pronouns on his bio and being "transphobic" and "racist" (and while he was drunk mostly) but these were all unsubstancial and very cherrypicked biased "proof" of course that wasn't nice of him and i'm not trying to deny that but using the word "victim" and acting like he's some kind of big villain or insane person now is just a bit too much imo, he's definitely not in a great mental state rn and all my support goes for both him and whoever he offended purposefully or not... fans has blown stuff way out of proportion just because he's a celebrity and that ain't doing any good to anyone... just let the man be and recover from this unecessary scandal...

Unpopular opinion:
I honestly prefer the White Ball demo. It's just so unnerving and I really like it-
it scared me the first time
Yeah, it happens after the mind electric actually
The normal white ball is so perfect at what it does and where it is in the album. White ball is suppose to lure you into comfort only for murders to punch you in the face with its harsh instrumental and disturbing story, this one is kinda like murders but louder and kinda hurts to listen to, not bad just not good for where it is in the album. Now if it was after the mind electric? that would make it 100% better, the creepy and electronic factors it has would make it perfect for after it.
I loved it too but the final version is so much better. The person above really explained it well.
@@logshit3150 honestly, I completely agree. The final version really does its job perfectly, I just like how the demo sounds.

Here's how each song demo feels to me
Introduction to the Snow: sounds like an oldies song, very pretty!!
Isle Unto Thyself: Sounds almost like Elvis in a way imo, sorta sounds like its from the 60s-80s lol
Black Rainbows: robot beatboxing. kinda has an "out of this world" feel lol. that's all i've to say.
White Ball: genuinely horrifying, like this genuinely shivers my timbers. it starts out fine but it also sounds like those Christmas ornaments with the voice boxes but like after a while of not changing their batteries the sound becomes insanely warped and eventually just goes silent, i know cause my parents have one. also it literally sounds like spirits are singing it, so um cool overall
Murders: it's pretty, but it also has this eerie yet cautious feel to it, im not very sure how to describe it
Space Station Level 7: sounds like the music for the title screen of some mario kart game imo
Inside the Mind of Simon: sorta the same as murders, though it has a weirder vibe to it, it's beautiful but the lyrics are so dark help
Labyrinth: sounds like a clario song imo, very pretty, (yes i know i keep saying this 💀💀)
Time Machine: WAIT ROB CANTOR? WAIT WHAT OMG ROB?? ROB CANTOR???? OMG??? IS THAT ROB CANTOR OMG
Stranded Lullaby: honk shoo honk shoo i could fall asleep rn this song is so soothing to me, again it sounds like an oldies song

Space station level seven sounds so good. Its my favorite, even better that most of the final songs. I NEED a full version.
I misread the title as "made out of demons". Imagine my disappointment.
Time machine makes me cry, it makes me realize how much of my time I actually waste and i start sobbing
yeeees is that the hawaii part 1
White ball is all ball and no white
I like a lot lot the time machine demo
Murders sounds so immaculate
Could be:
Introduction to the Snow
There is an Isle
Earliest Storm
Once a Crystal
Tale of the Erkling
Rocket for the Stars
Electric Beginnings
The Confining Punishment
Live The Dream (Nightmare)
Song of the Hopeless
Ending of One Once Known
Ngl Time machine and Stranded lullaby slap
Also i really wish they kept the lyrics of SL demo they sound so good
