WAIT I THINK I UNDERSTAND "I was a victim of magic apollo"! I think it refers to him being someone who suffered due his relationship, as many lovers of apollo do in greek mythology! Alternatively, many lovers of Apollo died running away from him. This could reflect the position the woman is in. Idk if I was late to the party but it blew my mind when I thought about it.
if variations on a cloud is connected to hawaii part ii then it refers to magic alot and the theme of variations is confirmed to be about 9/11 so i always thought about it as a way of saying he was a victim of 9/11 which is why he moved to hawaii, to get as far away from nyc as he could. thats what i thought of it as tho.
