I would extend to the early 2010’s… although the 90’s was defensive heavy ~ thanks Pat Riley and the Knicks/ Heat who ushered it in the mid to late 90’s and other coaches emulated and built their teams “defensive “ first.
Popovich, Larry Brown, even Doc Rivers to an extent, Phil Jackson..
There was still great competition and physical defense, and position based basketball ~ LeBron, Silver, player empowerment movement..after the lockout, sullied the game… the offensive rule changes, further devolved the purity and quality of the game!
I started watching and understanding what I was watching in 77-78, the first of back to back Finals matchups of the Sonics and Bullets…
I haven’t enjoyed watching the NBA since 2016… though my feelings changed after the lockout. That was the tipping point of no return for me personally.

@ Yeah so that’s why my reference start was 79 with the Sonics NBA title. I pretty much agree with your assessment -
The one thing that holds true is that the league office and Adam Silver have indeed legislated defense out of the NBA game and that is what REALLY troubles me most.

Anytime this topic is discussed with the new generation all they do is deflect by saying this era is "more skilled" or there's "more competition". Not only are both statements inaccurate but they're also irrelevant to the conversation. A guy being able to dribble and shoot today has nothing to do with the lackluster defense being played and the rules that allow those "skilled" players to look better than what they are. And how is the competition better when guys don't want to compete? Make it make sense

If Adam silver told the reffs to allow hand checking while the offensive player has the ball, at least 80% of current NBA players will not score over 20 points in a single game because you will be able to hold them and reach in to steal the ball, which something MJ was a master at doing.

This is why I don't put any of these new era cats over guys in the 80s,90s, early 2000s...even 70s. Those eras were all allowed to play physical defense. We saw what true versatile dominant scorers were able to do against defenses. These dudes in this era don't have to go up against anything like that. We see them putting up high points in the worse defensive rating era in history. Not even the fastest pace era of the 1960s had a defensive rating as worse as this era. No where near it despite the fast pace. Steph would be a 17-18 ppg scorer in the 90s. His first couple of years when he wasn't jacking up all these threes, he was scoring 18-20 ppg on average. His game is just too one dimensional as a smaller guard to be an elite scorer back then. We saw how versatile Reggie was and he was a bigger guard and he was a 18-19 ppg scorer. Mitch was a 21-25 ppg s scorer. All versatile. Plus Steph having to deal with that physicality as an injury prone player..I don't see his body holding up back then.

The worst part about todays NBA is that when we can see the team's shots aren't falling, you may as well turn the game off. Cold from 3? There's nothing they can do to win. And it's amazing how often the whole team is cold. Like what the hell is that about?

    • Another issue with the younger generation, is they were born after the 90’s, and by the time they understood what they were watching, the game had already changed ~ the lockout was the tipping point… which killed the older era’s and was a clear demarcation between every other era in the NBA, and the modern era. Where analytics, the offensive rule changes, the coaching philosophy changed and it was purposely done…
I agree with your assessment, with the NBA believing that the older fans were locked in and wouldn’t leave the game.

I mean, it would be interesting to see how Giannis would adapt to them calling travels, how would Luca adapt to physical defense. But Jokic to me has always played the right way in terms of playing physical. He’s really the only post player we have left. I think he would thrive in prior eras especially with the two big men playing. Beyond all that, though, the American system of developing players is pretty bad, everyone complains about AAU basketball and college aren’t able to teach fundamentals to the really good pros who end up being one and done. And really, the euro league is way more physical than the current NBA.

Great story Kenny told before that shows u the difference of what an NBA player had to go through back in the day that doesn't exist in today's game which is the mental aspect.
One time against the Pistons when he was a Rocket he caught fire must of hit like 3-4 straight 3s in a crucial part of the game and Chuck Daly calls timeout.
Now Kenny looked up to Isiah & Joe Dumars they were he's idols and he thought Joe was the nicest guy on the team. As they were going to their bench they crossed each other's path and Joe elbowed or punched him in his stomach.
So on the bench Kenny couldn't get his mind off the fact that Joe hit him in his stomach he couldn't concentrate or focus on what the coach was saying.
Someone who Kenny was telling the story to asked him did he make anymore 3s and Kenny replied no it through him complete off for the rest of the game.
Bro back then them dudes were so real, mind games and all, everybody was on that kind of time even the nicest of guys 😂. How can I put today's shooters above those guys when they don't go through none of that, they just out here shooting freely untouched nice kind of basketball 😂.
The mental part of the game is completely gone and the league went from playing chess to playing checkers.

I disagree! Max level skill players like Steph, would still be a version of themselves no matter what era. The main problem is we really can't compare players who played with different rules. "SKAP ATTAK" did a series about who's the GOAT in every era. That's how everybody should tackle this. Players like Shaq and Lebron would not have a long career if they played in the 80's or 90's but they still would be freak athletes. They probably won't be as lazy developing their game if they played in that era, but nobody really knows? Because they were lazy during their time and relied so much on their athleticism.

As much as I don't like this era. It isn't the worst. The worst era by far is the 50s. The shot clock didn't even start til 1954. Prior dudes were holding the call half the time and you got 34-19 scores. The lane had to be widened because of George Mikan to about 12 feet then because of Wilt had to be widened to 16 feet. No steals or blocks recorded officially. No dpoy til 83 so no telling how many russel, wilt, Kareem had. Blocks didn't count til Kareem 5th season so he likely is far ahead of Hakeem and Motumbo even. The 70s is worse based on the fact that the best players were in the aba like Dr J, Barry, Gervin, Dawkins etc for much of their primes. The high level of drug issues and selfish ball overall mudding the game then hurt it too. At worst today is behind the 80s, 90s, 2000s and maybe the 2010s but even the 2010 is similar to today . I can argue the 60s are worse too. Only rounds to reach the finals. This is why Duncan, Bron etc have way less rings than russel but won more playoff series. All it takes is a sprain ankle to Cousy, Russel to cause the Cs to lose. 4 rounds consistently over 3 is years more on your basketball career. Because of no blocks and steals we don't even know wilt real triple doubles . He likely has 350+ honestly. We can't even record the greatness of those guys.

I can say this, when it comes to Steph Curry, Steph was already changing the game with his shooting before the rule change. Look what Steph did to Kobe in a PRESEASON game, Kobe was all over him… Steph pushed off Kobe and hit a three in his face. That’s old school basketball. Steph has a mental toughness about him that even the Mamba had to say he’s a stone cold killer bc of Steph’s calmness. I get your point but Steph is different.

Right, a lot of these kids will just see hes white and call foul. Back then if u was white and playing in the NBA u was outcold period. Not so true today cats like Pat Connaught and Grayson Allen who started contributed nothing and blacks guys as well less and less are fundamentally sound players just athletes that practice on a playground style game that's clearly doesn't have the skills overseas guys are coming with today.
Too many players today get minutes that wouldn't have made the league back in the day. I heard Kenny Smith say this exact same thing.
