    Taking it today. In half an hour. Trying to keep calm. Grade 3
    Edit: one hour later. I'm home. I finished. I don't know what my grade is until I find out in a month or two.
    Score: 120. I passed. Got a score better than what I thought I would get. Not the best at piano. So it's good enough for me.

      Great! It's been a while since I had so much anticipation hitting that "read more" segment wondering if I'm going to be able to see how it turned out.
      Considering that this was from 3 years ago, curious as to if you've gone any further with your piano?

    Though Grade 8 looks hard (it is, I'm working on it now at age 62), in truth it marks the point where you have covered much of the basic stuff and could consider getting serious about playing well.

    Challenging but doable is all I've ever played... I played Rachmaninoff's prelude in G minor and Chopin's butterfly etude. Now I just started learning Mozart's sonata no.8, Bach's prelude and fugue in C minor and Liszt's etude no.4 (I also suck at sight reading).

      I've experienced the same, עמית משיח! I'm a grade 6 Abrsm Cello level but I can play the first movement of elgar's cello concerto which is a diploma level piece. It's good to see that you are challenging yourself, but you'll end up restless if you just excessively play things that make you overwork and challenge you. I'm a grade 7 Abrsm piano level but I'm currently looking at grade 2 jazz piano pieces which is advised to only have grade 5 level. You need to take a breather in order to be a well rounded musician.

    If you want to study music at A-level in the UK then you have to have grade 4 (previously 5) to be accepted so grades can be mandatory qualifications here and there.
    Also, it seems that you don't have to the ABRSM diplomas or higher alongside university degrees in performance to teach. My dad has just grade 8 in viola and a masters degree in musical analysis and he teaches in many primary schools. At least I assume you meant performance degrees at 5:50. Funnily enough, he never teaches (in schools) violin so experience is greatly valued over qualifications I think

    Hello. I don't know what grade I am. Anyways, I can play Moonlight sonata 3rd movement (220 BPM) comfortably and something that is challenging but doable for me is Islamey. Pieces that are too intense for me is thing equivalent or harder than Gaspard de la nuit. I can sight read around fantaise-impromptu level, though I was also able to sight read Moonlight sonata 3rd movement at around 150 BPM. My friends say I'm about grade 7-9 ish. What grade do you think I am?

    • @SiliPiano
      @SiliPiano 6 лет назад +2

      Honestly, if you can sight read Fantasie-Impomptu level, you’re far beyond grade 8.

    • @inthelight4671
      @inthelight4671 6 лет назад +1

      Wow, thats a mid level professional standard LRSM? Ofc it depends on how well your 'playing' and 'sight reading' is. If you're just sighting the notes and play the notes, then it means nothing. search up the most famous pianists that play the pieces you do, if you can play it at around 1 sort of tier worse than them then you're at a minimum LRSM and ofc no pianist would play moonlight sonata 3rd mov at 220bpm it not only sounds bad, but it also demonstrates little to no musicality and a lack of maturity in music performance. This would make your friends comments very valid, as the level of playing is a lot more than just sheer technique. But ofc If you can play the moonlight 3rd movement at 220bpm around 40-50bpm faster than written with only maybe less than 3 rotational errors throughout the entire piece with control and phrasing then at least your technique is at a LRSM level. Note that the sonata is a DipABRSM piece

    I think they are really interesting, I now see everything in grades, which is very useful, a lot more focus on everything. It's no longer just a 'difficult piece' or an 'intermediate piece', it's time to forget about these weak and more ambiguous terms. Alternatives to ABRSM are: Trinity, LCM, Victoria college, Rockschool. All very interesting. Non-European grades go from 1 to 10 instead of 1 to 8. People who say 'grades don't mean anything' or that they are 'nothing' are always the worst and most ignorant musicians, in my experience. Grades in music aren't much different that grades at school, they can't be 'nothing'. Another silly argument I hear is that grade 8 is not professional, which makes me laugh. Professional repertory is found even at grade 6 (equivalent to gr 8 RCM), such as 2nd movement of Moonlight Sonata, Mozart's Turkish Rondo, Nielsen's 'Mignon' and a ton of other top notch music written by masters. At grade 7 you have Bach's sinfonias, so obviously these people who badmouth exam grades have no clue whatsoever; it only displays their ignorance. Rockschool describes grade 8 as a stage where 'advanced and effortless technique is evident', or something along these lines. After grade 8, you can go even higher as there's 3 or 4 types of diplomas. I think grades and exams are really exciting, and they help to learn to focus on measurable goals. Thanks for the interesting videos :)

    • @niampatel9115

      I just finished my ucas application literally today and I finished grade 8 piano last December and am currently doing my dipABRSM. I also am working on my grade 8 violin so I’ve mentioned this in my ucas. Starting grades definitely helps if you want to have UCAS points to back you up to show what you have done quantitatively. They aren’t necessary because many universities don’t care for ucas points nowadays or at least much less than they used too. I would definitely still say though to try it out. A good idea is if you are self taught and can read the music just to pick a grade you think you can manage and pick a random
      Piece and try play it over a period. If you think it works then try that grade. If it’s too easy go up or if it’s too hard go down. If you have a teacher just ask and there will be some way to correlate your playing to your performance standard. Theory wise you don’t have to take any ABRSM theory exam unless you are going from grade 5 to 6 performance in which case you do grade 5 theory. This isn’t really very hard so I wouldn’t worry about it too much if you want to take grades. I did my theory in year 8 and got a distinction then and since then my brother has taken theory and said the exams are now easier so don’t worry. Good luck in everything and feel free to ask other questions I may be able to help

      DipABRSM is a huge jump from grade 8, its the equivalent to a jump of grade 5-8 because the simply the length about 3 times as long in terms of pieces and you're required to play at a low end unofficial concert standard with harder pieces. But ultimately it is up to you and how much you want to practice. Typically it takes 2 years post grade 8, but if you practice at least 2 hours a day then you may get it in 1, GL

    • @mr.coconut2310

      From what I've seen, the number of pieces you're required to play is quite a jump as well, like about 10 pieces or so compared to usual 3? And also holy shit sight reading :0
