  • @CadenzaPiano

    Interesting!
    I was thinking about going for RCM exams a few months ago, but seeing the prices was kind of a bummer. But I went to see a piano teacher to assess my level to know what would be reasonable, and she agreed with me for a level 6. I was very happy, since I had been playing piano for a year when I see her (16 months now).
    But I need to say that I had musical background (I've played clarinet and alto sax in high school) and I play about 3 hours a day in my good days, 1-2 hours otherwise (so 10-15 hours a week).
    I'll probably take a more local option (preparatory school from Université Laval in Quebec city, where I live). I was told the exams are like 40$ for practical, 20$ for theory. Way more affordable!

    The point you made about a Bachelor's degree being equivalent to the ARCT is highly dependant on where you go to school. If you want to go to a school with a smaller music program (like say the University of Lethbridge) then the audition requirements are only at a Grade 8 level, whereas if you audition for a school like U of C or Western the requirements are a Grade 10 minimum (i believe). Finally, if you decide to audition for UBC or McGill or U of T the audition requirements are ARCT level playing at a minimum. Not all bachelor's degrees are the same.

    • @PianotvNet
      @PianotvNet  7 лет назад +5

      Yes, exactly. The entrance requirements for most smaller/standard universities are around a grade 8 level - what I meant was that by finishing four years of university, your level would be equivalent to ARCT. And of course the more challenging colleges require higher entrance exam requirements. Sorry for the confusion!

    One thing that wasn't mentioned about corresponding theory. You have 5 years to match practical with theory if you want the certificate. I did harmony 1 5 years ago but at the time i was still at Gr 5 practical. Now I need to retake my advance rudiments to match Gr 8 since its too old now (I'm better at theory than practical).

    Interesting. Unfortunately we don't have such a system in our country. One question: The pieces in the RCM levels are very different (technique, epoches, styles etc.). Do the students study all or nearly all of the pieces of one level before starting with the next level? I mean: If they go on too fast, maybe they miss something that is important for a higher level?

    I can comfortably learn Chopin's nocturnes in a couple of weeks.
    My stretch pieces are Chopin etudes. I learned revolutionary, and right now I'm learning ocean (going for the easier ones first).
    liszt etude transcendental etudes, paganini etudes are all to intense, but Hungarian rhapsodies are easier for me.
    My sight reading is horrible, I really should work on that, it's the notes I can't read, tempo, dynamics, accents, key, and time signstures are all really easy.

He has a Bachelor degree in music and is nice but when I asked what the plan is once we finish the basics (Hal Leonard Adult Piano Method book 1) he said he didn't know which doesn't fill me with much confidence. I guess TLDR How do you know you have a good teacher or not?

    • @Sixtysixway
      @Sixtysixway 7 лет назад +3

      AluminiumFalcon you shouldn't worry about that. If your current teacher does not know about grading but is nonetheless a great teacher you could: 1. Keep practicing with him but get consuling elsewhere about RCM grades or 2. Ditch him completely and get yourself a RCM pianist teacher, your call.

    • @andrewdias2690
      @andrewdias2690 6 лет назад +2

      Not all teachers use these systems. That doesn't mean that they are bad performers or teachers. My teacher never really paid much attention to RCM, though we did use unofficial or more local systems of "ranking." In conservatory, it never even came up. Though some students did talk about levels in their past, I think by that point it was less pertinent as there was a sort of equalizer with admission to a music program. The point is that there is no real standardization for what constitutes a "good" teacher in regards to specific pedagogical methodologies or implementation of certain grading systems. It's pretty objective. Keep in mind that most famous pianists in the past never had these systems and could play and teach circles around these people who cling to the RCM.

I won't get high school credit, and I'm not going to a music college or music major. However, I don't know what grade I'm at or would be at and my performance skills are mediocre (blame those nerves!). I did my grade 6 exam but not the theory exam.. I also just did my grade 8 theory exam and got a 96 :)
    I’m going to do my grade 8 exam soon though
    Do I have to do a grade 6 theory exam even though I did my grade 8 one?

    so I'm going into high school this fall and I think I'm about a grade 8 level, I'm currently learning the raindrop prelude and then Chopin's 1st and 3rd op 9 Nocturnes, but I haven't taken any RCM exams and have no idea where my sight reading is, so if i wanted to take an RCM exam where can I, and where would you reccomend starting?

      You can order them from the RCM website.
      Not sure if they ship over seas though. You might need to contact them.
      All the best!

    I think that a lot of teachers generally lack in teaching education; pedagogy, psychology, teaching principles, didactic and methodology of music teaching. Knowing how to play an instrument and having a few teaching certificates is simply not enough. There is a whole science behind teaching a music subject. And this is where a university comes in, as a place where one studies all of the professional teaching skills. RCM exams are not enough..
