The battery died earlier so I had to get my car impounded to my home. This was the first time ever changing a battery and it was so easy. No codes afterwards. Thank you
Thanks so much paid around 200 for the battery did it in about 10 minutes with a friend of mine..the buzzing under the hood stopped for us also...thanks again
Thanks! Very helpful and gave me confidence to undertake this simple DIY replacement. Tip for folks without spare: Remove the rails (T25 Torx) and foam tray to provide easier access to battery clamp bolt, bottom right. I went with the $169 Costco Interstate AGM, which should be an upgrade of the original Varta in my 2018 TI. I used a ratchet offset and screwdriver set, which worked like a charm!
Hello from the UK, Thank you so much for the video - yep, easy to do, I appreciate the guidance ! Some info for UK owners and perhaps for those in some other markets. I have a 2018 Milano Edition which I've owned from new, still with its original Alfa/Varta battery. Battery was going sour, so replaced it with a Yuasa one ordered from a well known UK online battery supplier who also offered several other brands including Varta, Bosch, Exide etc.. On installing, it was larger in length than the original and covered the captive nut which is used for the clamp. Wondering what to do and should I contact the vendor, I then noticed to the side of the captive nut (about an inch) was a sticker and once removed it uncovered another captive nut which lined up perfectly with the new larger battery allowing it to be clamped down securely. So if you're still on your original battery and the replacement is longer, don't panic. I guess Alfa fitted two different sizes dependant on market? Thanks again for the tutorial !
I will be replacing the battery on my 2017 stelvio 2.0 280hp, this video is exactly what I needed. Now I know at least which tools to bring along! I confirm the battery disconnection should not be causing any issues. Actually this is how many users have been disabling traction control through the years... when the battery is disconnected ESC is not available until the next restart! To all owners I recommend going for a 95ah AGM battery, this should fit also to models where the 85ah is originally supplied. The go to battery is the Varta G14 (A5), pretty much an unlabeled version of the original one supplied by Alfa. Don't save money on batteries for these cars, 90% of the issue come from low voltage (old / exhausted) or low quality batteries.
Thanks for the video. The MTX is a great battery. There's a procedure to reset the warning lights afterward as well as the steering wheel angle sensor--turn the the wheel lock to lock in both directions. One additional thing, esp if you live near the ocean. Take a bit of emory cloth and clean up the inside of the terminal clamps and put a light coat of Auto Fanatic Terminal Grease around the terminals.
yes Mercedes has a similar procedure i recall. surprising our terminals look brand new which means the trunk is sealed pretty well from water. I have seen videos of the corrosion issues on these terminals causing electrical gremlins
Thanks again for another detailed video. Just bought the Bosch S5 A13 AGM to replace the 95ah Verta that came with my 2020 Veloce here in the UK. Stop start never worked from new and the mirrors and rear glass don’t clear either.
rear defrosted didnt work if battery charge level is bellow 60% instead of wasting money on a battery after another, i bought a ctek mxs 5.0 for much less and i charge the car battery like a couple of time per month
Thanks for the great guide! Replacing the battery in a short while. Unfortunately, the battery itself cost me $350 where I live, but I got a really powerful Varta, also with a 36-month warranty
Dealership won’t warranty batteries anymore since 2020 all they do is waste time charging it and telling you nothing is wrong but being proactive doing it yourself solves almost every problem on these cars. I just replaced my battery on my 2023 Giulia QV after only 6 months it went bad. Every Italian car uses the worst cheapest batteries that are the root cause of issues
@autofanaticcars Agreed, I've experienced a few weird electrical gremlins that Alfa couldn't identify. Had a major issue with the main ground strap going bad (under car, attached to transmission). The scenerio seemed like a dead battery again, until a cloud of white smoke came out from the driver side wheel well while trying to start. Ultimately the corroded ground strap put stress on the engine wire harness and burnt the wiring in multiple spots. Car just went out of warranty and Alfa quoted $7K to fix. I escalated with Alfa USA since a ground strap is not even a maintenance item and it's obviously a defect. They picked up the repair tab and made it right, but def gives me concerns about the longevity of the car.
Thanks! Just changed the battery on my stelvio Quadrifoglio, I used a bosche S5 A13. Check engine light stayed on for a while but fixed itself after a few short drives.
I think this is a great idea having all these videos on how to work on these cars by yourself because pretty soon there's not gonna be any more of those dealerships to even take them to!
I sort of get the dealer pricing. Recently had an electrical issue repaired at large dealership. The overhead was huge. Massive building, seemingly too many unnecessary employees - two young women at the service desk who spent 90% of their time on personal phones, an other employee whose job was to move cars from service drop off to mechanics, etc. After my car was moved to the ready area it took the service advisor twenty minutes to complete his paperwork. Then to the billing department, where there were four clerks - I was the only customer at the time. The dealership did a very good job and had an excellent repair warranty. Sometimes the dealership is the way to go, but so many routine maintenance can be done at a fraction of dealer cost + I enjoy taking car of my car myself. Happy motoring!
Awesome video thank you! I was just looking at how to remove the battery couple of days ago and this answered it all. Dealer service is a rip and the quality is subpar.

Great video my car was having electrical problems and last night my wife was driving in it started overheating for some reason I changed out the battery all the electrical codes went away and haven’t had any problems. My battery was four years old, so I guess it was time for a new one
Thanks for the helpful video, as the 2020 Stelvio I just purchased a few months ago is now exhibiting weird things like the infotainment screen going out, key fob not detected, and weird starting issues. Hope my problems go away with the Interstate AGM battery I just bought at Costco. Wish me luck...
@@autofanaticcars Thanks again! It went in like butter, but I noticed that the Varta that came out was a little bigger than the H7 Costco sold me. The Tire Center clerk assured me that if I wanted to swap out for the larger H8, I could, but the H7 should be no problem as that is what the application book called out. After installation, sure enough, all the errors came up, but after a short drive down the block and a restart, everything went away.
Auto Fanatic, great DIY vid. Keep them coming. Please update if this resolved all the alarm quarks and other electrical issues after you get farther down the road with it. BTW: Looking forward to the brake vid. There have been some open complaints with the brake-by-wire system Alfa uses in that it's prone to failure. Not sure if it's related to not adhering to the schedule of bleeding/flushing the brakes. Also, others have brought up that the rear brake pads wear quickly. If so, wonder what upgrade you'd suggest.
I ordered my Giulia QV in 2019, it still has the oem Battery, never had any electronical gremlins or any Battery problems, and i don't drive it during winter. Mostly during winter it sits in my garage for 4 to 6 weeks before i put the battery charger on... knocking on wood :) But due to the age of the battery i am planning on replacing it after this winter, maybe with a Liteblox or something lighter then oem. Looking forward to your maintenance videos.
I tried using a CTEK on my Giuia QV and it caught on fire after being plugged in for 4 hours completely melted the case and burned up. for sure a bad CTEK but i am nervous to try this again.
I got the best AGM Battery I could find and at the best price at Costco here in California, it costed me $200 minus $15 for bringing in the old Battery.
I thought my battery was bad because the start stop doesn't work and it would go into limp mode where it barely accelerates. I change the battery and still does the same thing . The battery is a Die Hard from advanced auto . I don't know if those are any good
Le tuyau de ventilation ??? Je viens de changer ma batterie grâce à votre video top. Par contre le trou sur la batterie est du coté droite maintenant !!! C'est impératif de rebrancher ce tuyau ???
Thank you for the video. This is the craziest car I've ever owned. Every since we changed the battery the sunroof never worked. Do u think this battery will cure that issue as well?
Relays are a known problem too. I've had to replace 3 of them so far because they were sticking on, the one for the AC clutch was sticking on causing a screeching sound every 10 seconds for 20 minutes after shutting the car off.
@@autofanaticcars No my battery was fine but I do have a AGM battery. Once the car went into deep sleep mode it stopped making noise and drawing power.
Sooo I replaced my battery with recommended specs in a die hard battery. All good for over a week and now electric gremlins have returned. Start/stop unavailable, service engine light, remote start turns off, modes not available. Is it due to the pricey battery? I'm really irritated because everything was fine. For a brief period.
I changed the battery for a Varta 95Ah AGM one. But now after 3 months the voltage dropped till 12,2V in rest… the car cranks sometimes 2 a 3 seconds before start-up… its a 2.0T 200HP European
Really curious as to why the slightly older models do not need the computer updated with the battery replacement. I figured All would have the “smart” alternator control that would require it. Makes me wonder if this is why so many comments on chewing through batteries so quick…. If adaptation wasn’t ram/reset….
Hi, thanks for the video. My 2018 Stelvio started acting crazy when I tried to start it yesterday. After reading a few posts, I figured it was the battery. Called the dealer and they quoted $270 for a battery with one year warranty and $380 to install which blew my mind. I found your video and got a battery from Eurozone for $250 with three years warranty. Replaced the battery, and the car started up and the same thing happened. Threw some error codes but after turning it on and off a few times it all cleared. $380 for a 30-minute job? I still don't get it. Thanks again.
I change the brake on my and it did the same thing and I did the same thing but I did not change the battery I drove it and I still have all the light in the dash
Great video very informative and well explained. That being said, I am not as mechanically inclined to do this removal. Too bad because I am having some battery issues with my Stelvio. Alfa has real issues with batteries. I know another friend whose had them with his Giulia. When I was at the dealership, they wouldn't even check my battery without charging me money! i will have to replace mine soon, I dread the expense.
Have any local repair shop do your battery they honestly can not charge you more than 1/2 hour labor it is that easy. Crazy how the dealer wanted to charge you to check your battery that is supposed to be part of the initlal vehicle check process when cars go in for any service or warranty. Dealers in general are hurting bad with lack of cars to sell and most owners buying out their leased and using independent shops so it seems they are all trying to squeeze money from everyone BMW, Audi and MB are even worse
@@autofanaticcars You are correct my friend. Fortunately I have a good independent Mercedes shop for my 08 S550. But for my wife's Stelvio, its just the dealer in the SF Bay Area. I don't know of any independent Alfa repair shops. I am screwed. Thanks again for the rear wiper info, I used your info when I bought mine. :)
DieHard Platinum AGM Battery H8 Group Size, 900 CCA, 1000 CA, 160 Minute Reserve Capacity, For High Electrical Demands. Is this ok substitute replacement for my 4 yr old mopar battery? Car is 2018 stelvio
There is a GPS attached to my battery, probably from a car sales dealer in case of missed payments? I bought it from private seller so I'm guessing it was overlooked ? If I remove this tracker am I going to cause issues with car?
Import thing to note in case you guys closed the lift gate while the battery was disconnected like I did 😅 there is a small rectangular panel on the inside of the lift gate (bottom right if you are looking at the lift gate from inside). Remove that panel with a flat head screw driver and there should be a small metal wire with a looped end inside. This is the emergency latch to open the lift gate from inside.
watch the cabin filter on my Giulia the Stelvio was a huge PITA and the cursing was so bad I never posted the video. On the Stelvio there is one screw that is so hard to get to with any small tool you will curse and hurt your back trying. I will never do this again.
this video inspired me to swap out my ailing original battery in my Giulia because it looks so straightforward. I ordered the larger 95AH Bosch which the AA website recommended so I'm sure it's 100 percent legit. The larger battery required means the fixing clamp has to bolt into another hole hidden under a sticker. it's a bit of an awkward job compared to the stelvio because of the location of the battery but all went fine. when you start it for the first time you have to go full lock both ways with the steering then restart to clear warnings. also, after the restart a cooling fan stayed on so I went for a drive and all is back to normal.... one benefit of a bad battery was that stop start never functioned, so I'll have to remember to switch that off I suppose!
do it yourself it really is not hard as I show here it will solve most if not all gremlins on these cars. I also loved how the start stop never worked but i also think this feature shocks the batteries and causing the cells to get weaker over time. the absolute dumbest feature added to new cars thanks to Govt control and BS.
@@autofanaticcars My start/stop hasn't returned with the new battery - hopefully she just forgot she has it :) Speaking of Govt control, are you ready for mandatory 'Intelligent Speed Assistance'?
So i did a little bit of digging and came across a statement that mentioned that these batteries need to be coded, or it will affect performance. Care to shed some light?
Thanks so much for the video! I would love to see the same for the Giulia. Is the regular Giulia the same battery configuration (right side trunk) as the QV?
Great video, thank you for all of your content. Looking forward to the brake fluid video. Was all set to attempt that but the dealer only charged $180 so I had them do it...assuming most dealers charge much more than that. Need to do it on another Giulia in the fleet and would rather DIY, though.
once we installed the new Interstate the car had zero issues the batteries are very critical to these cars and why is your car killing a battery every year there must be a short circuit or something wrong
@@autofanaticcars Man I'll never find it! The only commonality is every time the battery has gone out we were driving in dynamic mode for like 2 weeks solid. The battery passes the auto-part stores tests but it's not strong enough for the alfa. I just buy the new Interstate AGM and I'll see in another year. Maybe keeping it out of dynamic will do the trick....
all Italian cars have these issues since I was a kid learning and working on these cars. the biggest issue is the subpar quality of the batteries used by outside vendors. then cars sit for months on ships to get to USA then on dealers lots for more months and with the car sitting idle so long the cells discharge and get weaker over time. New cars have very robust electrical systems and any drop in voltage will drive the cars computers crazy.
I think the Varta batteries suck and the start stop systems overwork an already terrible battery. Also the platform was originally supposed to be higher voltage for future hybrid applications but they were behind and never realized it.
@@autofanaticcars Jaguars have the same problem, ESPECIALLY if they're not dailied. So a trickle charger is generally a good thing to have around. Too many complex systems on these cars.
the problem is not the battery but rather the insufficient charge level if the car is not used regularly for long enough trips, battery % while perfectly fine for turn on the car, is not enought for car secondary electronic systems. replacing batteries over and over is stupid and expensive, i rather plug a battery charger once every 1-2 week for an entire night and this help keeping battery level nice. and the problem is not alternator either, is just some battery drain + the IBS not "wanting" to charge battery enought while the engine is on. for ayone looking for a good quality and not overly expensive battery charger/mainteiner: ctek mxs 5.0
the problem with Alfa and every Italian car as long as I can remember is they are all using garbage batteries that discharge even after a few days of not using the car It is the battery type they are using and the poor quality. Another issue is these cars sit on boats coming over to America and then sit on car lots for months more being idle and never being charges and this ruins the battery cells making them fail prematurely. Cars like BMW, and Mercedes use much more expensive and superior Lithium Ion batteries that not only save weight they last a very long time without the need for a battery tender.. Having a Ctek is great but not if you park the car outdoors that is just not possible as your not supposed to use extra long extension cords on battery chargers. the solution that fixes almost every electrical glitch on these cars is install he Interstate battery and your good for many years to come. I just had my 2023 QV battery fail after only a few months of owning it and it was parked for 4 days and lost charge in my garage.
@@autofanaticcars i have the OEM battery and my Giulia can survive much more than 4 days, im not sure how old the battery is and can be even from late 2016!
Well you missed the most important part of this exercise in this video and the reason why you had a problem in the first place. If you take a look at the battery post of the old battery you can see the tremendous corrosion of light gray patina on the top of the post and along the contact surface areas of the battery clamp. I don’t understand why you thought that you don’t need to clean the clamp surfaces before you put the new battery on. Clearly you’re just going have the same problem in a few months. Alfa uses three different types of metals at the battery post and that is the root cause of the problem because they do not protect it at all from salt air corrosion when they ship the car over the ocean. There is an aluminum band clamp, cad plated steel bolt and a lead post…it’s a recipe for tremendous corrosion growth which causes low-voltage conditions and Whell you missed the most important part of this exercise in this video and the reason why you had a problem in the first place. terminal corrosion has zero to do with bad battery cells and the battery was tested and cells were bad. regardless the battery needed replacement and was easy to do, corrosion on terminals may solve some owners issues but not everything has to do with that if the battery cells are bad. No issues at all since.
@@autofanaticcars Look closer at your footage at 8:53, you'll see the vent hole. The procedure is to take out the connector from the old battery and put it on this one. I thought my battery was bad because the start stop doesn't work and it would go into limp mode where it barely accelerates. I change the battery and still does the same thing . The battery is a Die Hard from advanced auto . I don't know if those are any good
I have the same thing.. Did you figure out what it was? I get "Service electronic throttle control" and limp mode. Gonna try and replace the battery.
Le tuyau de ventilation ??? Je viens de changer ma batterie grâce à votre video top. Par contre le trou sur la batterie est du coté droite maintenant !!! C'est impératif de rebrancher ce tuyau ???
Hi thanks but don't you need to reset the ibs sensor?
are you aware of any lightweight battery option for the stelvio QV?
Thanks for this! Need to do the battery and the bleed soon.
Glad it helped Il be doing the QV bleed and flush sometime next week if I get some free time and weather permits of course.
im trying to replace the battery today....i'll let you know how it comes out
Thank you for the video. This is the craziest car I've ever owned. Every since we changed the battery the sunroof never worked. Do u think this battery will cure that issue as well?
Relays are a known problem too. I've had to replace 3 of them so far because they were sticking on, the one for the AC clutch was sticking on causing a screeching sound every 10 seconds for 20 minutes after shutting the car off.
interesting thanks for sharing was your battery defective as well?
@@autofanaticcars No my battery was fine but I do have a AGM battery.
Once the car went into deep sleep mode it stopped making noise and drawing power.
Sooo I replaced my battery with recommended specs in a die hard battery. All good for over a week and now electric gremlins have returned. Start/stop unavailable, service engine light, remote start turns off, modes not available. Is it due to the pricey battery? I'm really irritated because everything was fine. For a brief period.
Dude you’re the best💯
I appreciate that
I changed the battery for a Varta 95Ah AGM one. But now after 3 months the voltage dropped till 12,2V in rest… the car cranks sometimes 2 a 3 seconds before start-up… its a 2.0T 200HP European
Hey I just changed the battery and my car is still throwing codes…service forward collision warning, parking light out, brake light out…anyone know?
The interstate website doesn't show Alfa Romeo in the list for compatibility. Do you know if this will work for the Giulia QV?
yes i just installed one on my new QV yesterday the model you need is the Interstate MTX49/H8
@@autofanaticcars thank you so much!
Really curious as to why the slightly older models do not need the computer updated with the battery replacement. I figured All would have the “smart” alternator control that would require it. Makes me wonder if this is why so many comments on chewing through batteries so quick…. If adaptation wasn’t ram/reset….
wish I knew myself, just bought a 2023 and will swap the battery ASAP just for piece of mind the factory Varta batteries are horrible
Thanks again.
great to hear and glad my video made the swap painless and easy for you.
I change the brake on my and it did the same thing and I did the same thing but I did not change the battery I drove it and I still have all the light in the dash
Thank you very much it really very helpful , good job 👍
Glad it helped!
Where did you get that tool to remove the bracket???
Very well done video
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video very informative and well explained.
@@autofanaticcars I found out my local dealer charges $125 labor for installation and $216 for the battery. Thank God its not $500!
Did you reconnect the vent tube?
new battery does not have a vent
@@autofanaticcars The hole should be there you just have to swap it out from the old one.
It was there on my AGM battery.
There on my husband's as well. He said it had a sticky cover/ skin over it...
I followed the video but my suv did not start. Not sure what I did wrong..

Demands. Is this ok substitute replacement for my 4 yr old mopar battery? Car is 2018 stelvio
Die Hard makes great batteries so you should not have any issues anything will be a nice upgrade over the OEM garbage these cars come with.
@autofanaticcars thanks!
Do the cabin air filter next 😁
watch the cabin filter on my Giulia the Stelvio was a huge PITA and the cursing was so bad I never posted the video. On the Stelvio there is one screw that is so hard to get to with any small tool you will curse and hurt your back trying. I will never do this again.
@@autofanaticcars 😂
this video inspired me to swap out my ailing original battery in my Giulia because it looks so straightforward.
@@autofanaticcars My start/stop hasn't returned with the new battery - hopefully she just forgot she has it :)
Speaking of Govt control, are you ready for mandatory 'Intelligent Speed Assistance'?
@@AiMSmartCam So far that's for the EU and not the US...so far.
So i did a little bit of digging and came across a statement that mentioned that these batteries need to be coded, or it will affect performance. Care to shed some light?
Misinformation on forums no coding to replace batteries
Need help with electrical throttle cable
Can you reset electronic throttle cable on a 2018 stelvio q4
Thanks so much for the video! I would love to see the same for the Giulia. Is the regular Giulia the same battery configuration (right side trunk) as the QV?
I think all the Giulia have the battery on the passenger side rear trunk compartment.
Hey what battery do you recommend for the QV?
Interstate
Best ever thank you!!
Just bought the battery at Advance Auto parts for $244...Alfa Romeo dealer wanted $685 plus tax installed, with a military discount...what a ripoff
nice job dude :)
Thanks! 😁
awesome, TY
Thank you again!! Your video is always helpful 🙂🙂🙂
You are so welcome!
Great video, thank you for all of your content. Looking forward to the brake fluid video. Was all set to attempt that but the dealer only charged $180 so I had them do it...assuming most dealers charge much more than that. Need to do it on another Giulia in the fleet and would rather DIY, though.
Did you order the battery online or got it in the store?
local Interstate dealer dropped it off to us
Did the problem every come back for you? I'm killing batteries about every 12 months in my alfa
once we installed the new Interstate the car had zero issues the batteries are very critical to these cars and why is your car killing a battery every year there must be a short circuit or something wrong
Why do these new Alfa Romeos chew through batteries so quickly?
all Italian cars have these issues since I was a kid learning and working on these cars. the biggest issue is the subpar quality of the batteries used by outside vendors. then cars sit for months on ships to get to USA then on dealers lots for more months and with the car sitting idle so long the cells discharge and get weaker over time.
Too many complex systems on these cars.
presumably, there is a software update that might remedy it
Start the car, turn the wheel lock to lock. Turn the car off and then restart. Cleared and ready to go.
It doesn't need to be programmed, right? Just get a new battery and install it?
No programming
the problem is not the battery but rather the insufficient charge level
if the car is not used regularly for long enough trips, battery % while perfectly fine for turn on the car, is not enought for car secondary electronic systems. replacing batteries over and over is stupid and expensive, i rather plug a battery charger once every 1-2 week for an entire night and this help keeping battery level nice.
and the problem is not alternator either, is just some battery drain + the IBS not "wanting" to charge battery enought while the engine is on.
for ayone looking for a good quality and not overly expensive battery charger/mainteiner: ctek mxs 5.0
the problem with Alfa and every Italian car as long as I can remember is they are all using garbage batteries that discharge even after a few days of not using the car It is the battery type they are using and the poor quality.
Its amazing how dealers can continue to get away with ripping customers
disgusting but the Govt wants to control us in every way but do nothing to prevent gouging to consumers
Random won't turn on
They quote 2 hours to rip us off. That took 10 minutes at best
You forgot to connect the vent hose
Mate, you forgot to connect the vent hose. You risk breathing some nasty stuff from your battery.
No vent hose on the new battery it’s different cell design
@@autofanaticcars Look closer at your footage at 8:53, you'll see the vent hole. The procedure is to take out the connector from the old battery and put it on this one. But now it's kinda late, since you already recycled the old one... At least let your followers know and not make the same mistake, as in the end it is about everyone's health
Not impressed with the OEM Varta battery
FYI... My mechanic charges only for the battery, no labor. Time to find another mechanic?
private shop versus a dealer is quite different we all know even a local gas station service center would do this for a nominal fee.
