  • The sound in the video is a hairdryer I had to turn on and off at a particular pace to get the right amount of heat and air movement.
I made this years ago. I have made many tornado vortex generators but most of them use a fan to provide suction at the top of the vortex. Creating a stable vortex using only heat as the updraft is very difficult and I have failed many times before. The key is getting the right ratio of updraft and rotation. Getting too much updraft is ok, and it’s better to lean in this direction. Too much rotation will fail to form a nice funnel. One other challenge is that the heat tends to evaporate the mist form the ultrasonic fogger rendering the vortex invisible.
I plan to one day build a prettier more finalized version.

this happens because of heat right? do its making a updraft so if its just right it rotates
    am i right?

      Yep. Heat/updraft and rotation.

I recently made an updated version which looks much better than this one.

    How make a dust devil

Heat and rotation. That's the basics. If you have a heated surface and the exact right amount of rotation, you will get a well formed dust devil. The trick is getting the ratio of updraft and rotation just right. It's also difficult to add in fog or mist that makes it visible without disrupting it. Also, the weaker the vortex, like in the video, the easier it will be for air currents in the room to disrupt it.

I might make a video that gives a basic overview of how it works and all the challenges I had making it. The second version I made was much better (also on my channel), but still not as good as I wanted.

@@falljazz I achieved a similar result as the one you made by using boiling water and cardboard

@@cristletower Nice! That's actually how I made my first one of these!
