@@Lukec939 There are 3 main things going on. 1. At the center is a hot plate that would typically be used to keep a cup of coffee warm. This creates an updraft. 2. Air is blown around in a circle through the eight fins. This creates rotation. 3. A small amount of water vapor is injected around the hot plate which is pulled into the vortex making it visible. I made it by buying the different components (fan, power supply, hot plate, mist maker) and then 3D printing everything else.

For a model that has a fan at the top, yes. For a model like this, no. The fog would be too cold and kill the heat updraft, and it would be hard to control the amount which is important to get just right.

Thanks! I tried to put it together like an ad even though I don’t know if I’ll ever do anything with it. The music was actually AI generated that way I didn’t have to worry about copyright.

Unfortunately the STL files for this model are a bit of a mess as I had to make a lot of updates to get it to work correctly. Because this was a prototype, there are a lot of unnecessary features and design flaws. If you try to make your own, I’d be happy to answer any questions you have.

I'm working on a desktop model that can be turned on with a simple switch. Maybe after that I'll put out a video explaining how it works.

I want to keep the heat on the lower end to keep it safer, and the mist actually evaporates if you get it too hot. The sleeker components are thanks to Mark's 3D printer lol

Heat and rotation. That's the basics. If you have a heated surface and the exact right amount of rotation, you will get a well formed dust devil. The trick is getting the ratio of updraft and rotation just right. It's also difficult to add in fog or mist that makes it visible without disrupting it. Also, the weaker the vortex, like in the video, the easier it will be for air currents in the room to disrupt it.

That would definitely work if you were able to get stable rotation and you had the updraft and rotation ratio right. Is the paper for making smoke?

Yeah, all the heat came from heating cable. You can see a coil of it at the base. Some of the cable was internal wrapped around a copper pipe.

I do want to put together a video explaining how it works and the process I went through to build it. I've never made a video like that before though, and it will probably be a long time before I get around to making it. I made it. I can’t really explain how to make it in one comment, but I’m hoping to make a video in the future that goes over the details.

I might make a video that gives a basic overview of how it works and all the challenges I had making it. The second version I made was much better (also on my channel), but still not as good as I wanted.
