- On 19 December 1990, Sammer debuted for the newly formed unified Germany national football team, which was mostly made up of the West Germany team that had won the 1990 FIFA World Cup. The match was played at his home stadium in Stuttgart and Germany ran out 4-0 winners against Switzerland.
Sammer was a member of the German squad for UEFA Euro 1992, where the team was beaten in the final by Denmark. He was also selected for the 1994 FIFA World Cup, as Germany was surprisingly knocked out by the underdog Bulgaria at the quarter final stage.
In UEFA Euro 1996, Sammer played in the libero role he had been converted to at Borussia Dortmund. He scored the opening goal in Germany's second group match against Russia and the winning goal against Croatia in the quarter-final. After Germany defeated the Czech Republic in the final, Sammer was named Player of the Tournament.[5]
On 7 June 1997, Sammer played his final match for Germany in a 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Ukraine in Kyiv.

Sammer was my favourite defender of the mid-90s. Loved watching him play. He was phenomenal!
Sammer is one of the best defensive players I've ever seen. His calmness under pressure and his interceptions were amazing... his partnership with Kohler for Germany and Dortmund is one of the strongest there's ever been... there's not enough footage of Sammer on RUclips... Thanks for sharing this video 👍
Kohler Sammer Cesar... At that point, Borussia was the best team on the globe.
Sammer is also one of the best offensively
He deserves to be listed in fifa 100 as well as in world soccer magazine.
You could completely throw away playing counter attacks when Matthias Sammer wasn't in your team. He would intercept literally anything coming his way....often intercepting - workd class pass - another player gets the ball....pass....striker makes the goal.
He was a Libero, holding midfielder with an outrageous tactical intelligence. I always describe Sammer as 60% Beckenbauer and 40% Matthäus in one body....with the hunger to win like Oliver Kahn.
At Borussia Dortmund and the EM1996 he was absolutely phenomenal and the main reason Germany won the EM trophy and Dortmund won not only the Champions League but kept FC Bayern München at bay...and Bayern München was investing in a world class coaches like Trapattoni or Rehagel....but players like Kahn, Matthäus, Helmer, Babbel, Strunz, Scholl, Klinsmann, Herzog, Sforza, Papin etc etc etc weren't able to beat Sammer and Zorc leading this BVB. The defense line Sammer - Kohler - Julio Cesar was behind AC Milan in terms of greatness. An unreal hard to play trio with Reuter and Freund making it even harder to beat this incredible Hitzfeld Dortmund.
I modeled my style of play cause of him, his style was priceless
Read the game like a novel
Best defender of 1996
the best libero in germany's history after beckenbauer
his defending skill is even better than Beckenbauer
Sammer made the best longballs ever. Not even Matthäus reaches his skill level.
In World cup 1998 Sammer was injured, then Germany failed against Croatia in quarter final.Iam sure if sammer was not injured in the world cup germany would have been in the final match against brazil
I agree with you! At the World Cup 1998, the German national team did not have many players.. There was no Dieter Еilts Mehmet Scholl, there was no Freddie Bobich and Stefan Kuntz.. But most importantly, Matthias Sammer was not there, and in my opinion, this determined the fate of the entire German national team..
Interesting that he started as a striker and switched positions later on in his career
euro 96' hero
Great compile.. please make Theo Zagorakis in Euro 2004, Xavi in Euro 2008
❤
Germany would have won the world cup in 98 if Sammer had played
. He was the best player in the world before he got injured
He’s ginger
Sammer is the futbolistic son of Beckenbauer
