Best German player post Matthaus, controversial opinion if we think later on players like Ballack, Schweinsteigger, Muller, Lahm, etc, but if he didn't had to retire so early it wouldn't be controversial at all. More than anything he was able to play 3 different roles on the same game based on his football brain, imagine a player like this on this era managed by Klopp or Guardiola, even if at the time Hitzfeld was one of the best in Europe for sure.
best after matthaus is lahm and its not even arguable, lahm is one of the best full backs of all time and also played really well as a dm. Lahm was also key in a world cup, champions league and many league titles. Sammer was a great player but respect Lahm.

Which should have gone to Ronaldo, who only lost by 1 point. But let's be honest, there are a lot of old farts in the world who would never vote for a 19 year old to receive the Ballon d'Or, regardless of the stats they put up. Sammer was great, but not better than Ronaldo in 1996.

Some players can't be gauged by highlights, you have to see them run the 90+ minutes every weekend to understand their contribution is mostly physical and tactical, Nedved for example ran as much as two players and could play defensive midfield, playmaker and winger all at high level. Playing against a team with him was effectively playing against an extra man. You want a bad BdO winner? Cannavaro won the same year it was discovered referees were bribed to ignore all his tackles and some videos surfaced of him using illegal enhancing substances, not to mention he wasn't even the best defensive player in his own teams, that went to Zambrotta and Nesta.

Best player in my opinion. The man behind the Mannschaft.
Probably the most underrated player of football history. Best defensive midfielder I ever seen, and one of the best 8's and center defender.
He could play like sweeper, center-back and defensive midfielder. A complete player! Dixie Dorner + Klaus Sammer = Matthias Sammer.
