  • 'The Red Baron' is a heroic name in German football and a legend of Borussia Dortmund. Brave, tough, and talented, he led both his national and club sides to mid-90s silverware, earning the most votes for the 1996 Golden Ball - the 2nd ever defender to win it, behind Franz Beckenbauer. Yet, his legacy is questionable outside of his home nation, overshadowed due to his early retirement and short stint at the heights of the sport. Why is Iron Matthias a 'Forgotten Champion'?

Honestly, I have never seen a player after Sammer who can easily play any spot on the pitch, perhaps Steven Gerrard at moment but not as determined as Sammer. Sammer started as striker at Dresden, later on he played attacking midfielder (no. 10), and the rest is history. Many regard him as a defender which is connected to his later games for Dortmund and United Germany, but in his mind he was pure offense.

Back in the golden age…when players were real men, and didn’t cry about their ‘mental health’, or have pretentious double barrel surnames, weren’t all called ‘Mason’, didnt kick cats, didnt rape, weren’t entitled crybabies, didnt divulge their private lives on Tik Tok, weren’t concerned with stat padding or their latest designer ‘drip’….No wonder Mourinho isn’t successful nowadays, when he was used to the likes of Materazzi, Terry, Drogba, Carvhalo, Milito. Now he has to get permission from Tammy Abraham’s mum before he can decide to drop him, in case he cries and reports him to social services for mental abuse or ‘gaslighting’

Yeah they were just drunk all the time what a great thing. Also if you think there were no such things back in the day... There was just no internet you dislike so much their private life couldn't be as exposed so bad things didn't go public back then everything had to go through the media.
Also a manager who once was successful won't always be successful i know that sounds like a myth to you but people can change listen to mourinho now compared to 2010 he isn't nearly as charismatic... Also what is a real man? A person who injures people on purpose like a roy Keane. What a real man didn't cry about their mental health instead he purposefully attacked him. I rather have people crying than hitting each other. But i guess if you are a fan of that.

Its high time that the world acknowledges and realises defensive midfielders and the back pack are equally important for a team to win. Its always the strikers (likes of Messi, Ronaldo, Rooney, etc) who hog the limelight. Tons of videos have been made for them. But finding a video which truly describes and heralds the heroics of the back pack who guard the GK and the post is like finding a diamond in a mine. Kudos to the Retro Route for such a wonderful video which does justice to Matthias Sammer's talent and achievements. Sad to know his career ended in such fashion....but he truly is a LEGEND. Beating heart of the team? Matthias Sammer could not have spend so much time upfront without the real Heartbof the team....which was Dieter Eilts....who as a classic defensive 6 played the tournament of his life. He man marked the enemy teams playmakers.... radically intercepted counter attacks and when Sammer was switching from defense to offense run....Eilts would stuff the holes in the central defense.
Matthias Sammer wad the SOUL of the 1996 German team. A leader, fighter, tackler, defender but also playmaker that added incredible technique, elite passes and confidence....but his greatest strength was his brain....his tactical understanding when he was needed to assist the offense and when he had to add his abilities to strictly defending
    ...
He was also lucky to play with individuals like Thomas Helmet, Jürgen Kohler, Markus Babbel, Stefan Reuter and other experienced elite defensive players Germany ny had in its squad....
