Beckenbauers games is unique. He was so elegant but never did some cocky move. Everything was pure efficiency, but it looked so easy. His passes with the sidefoot are legendary. He was a Zidane in the 60es and 70es. And he preserved his abilities for 15 years on world level.

In some ways Beckenbauer is the most complete player ever. He was a superb defender, great timing, great tackling, organising the defense, filling gaps, anticipating and snuffing out danger. But he equally organised the offense from way back, having the ability to pass the ball over great distance with uncanny precision. He had perfect ball control and blistering speed. Back in 1966 and 1970 he was foremost a scoring mid-fielder with incredible acceleration. There has never been a player who equally dominated the game on both ends. All the greats, Zidane, Cryff, Maradona, Ronaldo, Messi, Pele, etc. were offensively minded players and could not match even remotely Beckenbauer's defensive genius. The only player in a comparable category was actually Mathäus, who was special in offense and defense (ask Maradona). Overall, there is a valid case to be made calling Beckenbauer the greatest of all time.

@@EureHoheit22 Luka Modrić, probably the most complete midfielder ever. His attacking qualities are well known, vision of the game, control of pace, dribbling, passing and assists. However, his defense is top notch. Intercepting the ball, reading the game, pressing the ball...He is often in the zone where he blocks a shot, steals the ball or kicks out from his own penalty kick. And he is still doing all this at the age of 39, where he was the best-rated player in the last match of the Spanish league.
I was the one who cried when Zidane retired, the only shirt I had was from him that I wore and I'm an incredible fan. However, people forget and sometimes turn legends into myths. Zidan was not defensively oriented, he always had Makelele and Viera behind him. Zidane had some really bad games and there is a reason why France finished at the bottom of the group in the 2002 World Cup and why they did badly in Euro 2004, why Real from 2003 to 2006 were constantly eliminated earlier in the Champions League, even when the competition was weaker like 2004, etc. Modrić is probably the most consistent player in the past 15 years or so, from the player who was named in the ideal Euro 2008 lineup in 2008, to now when he is again in the competition for the best midfielder in the world.

I would accept "not" with a proper explanation. But "absolutely not" seems a bit strong. The man won everything at club level und internationally. I wonder if you ever watched entire games with him on the pitch and in his prime. You cannot judge him from highlights, you have to watch an entire game to appreciate how much he controlled the pitch in both directions. I cannot think of any other player who did that to such an extend. The best players in the game lacked his defensive genius. @@cafinario

Same like 82, Schumacher must get a red card, for the foul, I think, against Battiston! But I think sometimes, the Referees are shocked when there comes a foul like in the final 2010, Spain-Netherland, with the Kung Fu Kick from the Netherland player! If you don't see the old games!

I grew up watching football in late 80s. Never watched him played live. Looking back the way he played, I am completely amazed how complete a footballer he was, he can defend, he can attack, he can orchestrate the play, he can score, just he could do everything.
Nowadays no defenders play like this. The last of this kind I believe was Franco Baresi. Such a beautiful way of play to watch. This is what we call art of football
He is absolutely up there with Pele and Maradona for the fact that he created a libero role in football. A status beyond Platini, Gullit, Zindane, Messi, Ronaldo

He invented position he played, called "Libero"...or "Free". Primary job was defending, however, he also played midfield and offense. He played the same role on Bayern FC, and for he German national team. Both were very successful for years, because of him. Pretty much entire Bayern defense played for the national team, so those players knew each other extremely well, and learned to cover for Beckenbauer once he decided to move forward with the ball. This style of player eventually died out, as football got more robotic and by the book.

Not to mention, his West Germany defeated the more fancied Hungary of Puskas. He assisted 2 goals if I'm not wrong. I've read that many people would consider him of a similar stature as Beckenbauer ( he was better for many).
He was the star man of the 1954 batch of legends having the likes of Schafer, Morlock, Helmut Rahn, Posipal, Eckel. The worse the weather became, the better he played - which gave rise to the phrase "Fritz Walter weather".
Still, Lothar Matthaus among the top 3 Germans of all time is something I agree with fully.

Best, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, where heads & shoulders above, any European born player I've seen over the years. And I'd include Platini, Laudrup, Baggio, Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo, in that assertion.

We haven't watch a player like that before, only him. By the way, he invented a position in football, like if wasn't just enough all the talent he had
