WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Making a universe guided by this god and one where good and bad events are just things that exist are indistinguishable.

Many claim and/or seem to believe that the Bible is a book of ‘good moral laws’ - and then use that false claim to make points about various laws that they consider to be immoral - in their opinion. That’s a straw man argument. Cannibalism is a moral act among cannibals. The laws, commandments, illustrations, and patterns of the Bible are not given as a blueprint for the moral governing of society as a whole - oftentimes, they can and do conflict with an individual’s own sense of morality.
John Daedalus
I have not considered that it actually condones abortion, but I certainly agree that many, if not most, if not yet nearly all of those professing Christians, in my own conversations with them - seem to have no clue as to what the Bible plainly says.
John Daedalus
I agree. I am one, and I very often do find it frustrating - and pointless - to share my thoughts with the “Rainbows and Butterflies” Christians. Truth does not give a happy fart what any of us think - it is unchanged by our personal opinions. I have found that many professing non-Christians actually do have a much clearer understanding and knowledge of words and stories in the Bible.

One lays down an assumption that god is just. Then evaluates this conjecture as fact and from this fact, 'proves' that no matter what god does or doesn't do, he still remains just, loving and truthful.

Damn Matt was exceptionally on point with the quick rebuttals here
When will theists understand that first they have to prove that gods exist or there is even a probability of them existing before claiming their gods are love or the basis of morality. A book isn't sufficient evidence. The fact that we're here isn't sufficient evidence. The fact that science doesn't know everything is not sufficient evidence. They can't give attributes to something that most certainly doesn't even exist.
@Calvin Harrison
Prove it.
That is a rhetorical request, I know for a fact you cannot do so. Because your claims are simply absurd.
@Calvin Harrison you make a lot of claims with literally zero evidence to back them up. How do you know that the cosmos hasn't existed in some form forever and our universe originated naturally? Isn't it more likely, rational, logical and reasonable to conclude that a natural universe had natural origins. Do you seriously believe that an omnipotent entity from another dimension magically created everything from nothing?
@Calvin Harrison No, my mother and father are my creators. They had naked sweaty grown up sex in December of 1978 and 9 months later, I took my first breath in this world. No gods were present at conception or birth. All natural biological processes at work there. As usual, you are making a claim with no evidence to support it. Typical Christian logic, take the evidence we have and replace it with God did it. Prove the God exists first, then we can discuss what it did or did not create. All other points are moot until you show us the god. And none of this he has presented evidence of himself in everything we've seen bullshit. That's a very nonsensical way to say nothing at all and prove nothing at all. You're back to asserting existence with no evidence when you say shit like that.
@Calvin Harrison How do you even know the universe was "created"? There are nearly 8 billion people on this planet and the millions that have gone before and NOT ONE PERSON knows what existed or occured before the big bang. How do you know?
Religion has aided the cause of the new atheists, as people have become fed up with the religious extremism, terrorism, and conflict plaguing the world. “Religion poisons everything,” says one leading atheist. Moreover, that ‘poison’ is said to include religious beliefs in general, not just extremist views. Core dogmas, say the new atheists, must be exposed, abandoned, and replaced by rationality and reason. People must be unafraid to speak frankly about the “mountains of life-destroying gibberish” found in the Bible and the Koran, writes atheist Sam Harris. “We can no longer afford the luxury of . . . political correctness.”
While the new atheists reproach religion, they revere science, some even claiming that it disproves the existence of God. But does it? In fact, can it? “In the fullness of time,” says Harris, “one side is really going to win this argument, and the other side is really going to lose.”
Teaching someone to be self sufficient is better for their well-being than continually giving them sandwiches.
1. Giving away food costs money and therefore takes away from your well-being.
2. If you teach someone to be self sufficient, they are in a more sustainable situation. If you get cancer and can no longer afford to give them sandwiches, if they are self sufficient their well-being will not be affected.
3. If you teach them how to be self sufficient they can help others, and teach them how to be self sufficient as well. This allows you to indirectly help more people.

Don't forget about the story of job... What a nice guy making a bet with satan to ruin a guys life
I can't believe I used to believe and defend this crap. So glad that my eyes have been opened and that I don't go around soundling like an idiot all of the time anymore. Love you, Matt and Don!
Really good explanation by Matt of well being. Matt really was comfortable in this clip. The last half reminded me of George Carlin and how he turned fundamentalist beliefs into comedy. Matt was arguing seriously, but his arguments were so logical that they were funny. It wouldn't take much to turn it to comedy.
I don't get how tribes can treat eachother with respect when they don't even know what a bible is.
Many tribes walk around practically naked and they are respectful and take care of eachother.
How come that we need a bible to tell us how to live our lives when they don't?
Contraception is bad for a woman's health as it's unnatural plus it's a grave sin as Abortion is a grave sin so evil, we should be a culture of Life. @Jubei Yang how did you come to that conclusion? Have your researched into it ?? I think not!!
@Jubei Yang Yet, the same loving God would cast the people in whom it has imbued these traits into eternal torment for not having a Christian (or name any other religion) view / education / indoctrination. Utterly ridiculous. To the point that I hope that that was a snarky rejoinder.
This is epic. Matt is philosophical prowess is phenomenal. Deep, yet easy to digest.
I love watching this show...its hysterical watching religious people go in circles and tripping over their words...they look so ignorant.
Theists - Forever underestimating themselves and believing they would be morally lost if there's no one to tell them what's moral and what's not. There's another way you know, it's called thinking.
Anybody else loves Don’s sarcasm and laugh. He’s awesome. Especially when teamed with Matt 💪🏾. He doesn’t say much, but when he does, he’s funny lol.
Matt Dillahunty's reasoning = BRILLIANT
Morality can be based on compassion and empathy and you don't need a made up sky daddy to tell you that.
This is the best video ever from Matt!!
“That’s performance art” *cackles*
I love Don
Matt‘s highly articulate, supremely logical and unbelievably brilliant! Some of the greatest counter arguments and pieces of advice given by him in this episode alone! Thank goodness I’m on his side first of all! If the caller‘s sensible and reasonably agreeable then he would have acknowledged that „Matt you presented brilliant arguments!“
I was just thinking about the Flood earlier today... and I realized something I had never thought about before.
There really wasn't even any point to the whole thing. It's not like God taught anybody a lesson with it, Noah and his family didn't need a lesson, they were already "righteous"
The people he drowned didn't learn a lesson, they died.
The people that came after didn't learn shit, because in less than 100 years, they were doing shit God didn't like again, so what did they learn?
(that's ignoring all the reasons the story is bullshit... just to point out that the basic reason behind it doesn't make any sense)
Yep. God could just have easily blinked all but the eight "righteous" people out of existence and teleported them all straight to hell. No need to flood the whole fucking planet.
@@stuboyd1194 exactly -- what did lions, tigers and bears (oh my!) do to deserve being wiped out? Nothing. So this god-thing is a worse asshole than trophy hunters.
"Oh, but they were just beasts of the field in the bible. " Then why did this god-thing even create them? We don't kill those three species for food... and they actually have come after people for food! According to that book, the god-thing sent three she-bears to kill 42 'punks' who made fun of Elisha's bald head.
The whole body of that god-thing's teachings is garbage. The "golden rule" predates this holy book, so what good can it do?
It's all shit.
I've heard that it was to kill the nephilim in some extra biblical books. Those same books go on to say that Goliath was a nephilim, so God failed there too.
God gave us free will so we could choose to have cancer, but he loves us.
I think if your mailbox was being molested, it would send up a red flag.
Troy Evitt I gave you the thumbs up for making the attempt, but, booooooo
The three worst ways possible to waste your time. 1. Having a conversation with someone who is lying to you. 2. Having a conversation with someone that you are lying to. 3. Having a conversation, argument, or debate with someone who has an obvious cognizant disadvantage. Never debate with a fool. Idiots are locked in mental boxes and all truths and wisdom outside too foreign and therefore not welcome in their box.
Caller: " it's a loop"..
Your whole religion is a loop.
So annoying when callers just wait to speak and never address what is being said to them
HAHAHA Performance Art!!!! That was perfect!
I love to listen to these before I'm forced to go to church. Have a good Sunday
Don is hilarious and especially on this episode 😂
Morality is implicitly outwards facing, it's the consideration of ones actions and behavioral consequences on a scale bigger than oneself. Defining how one ought to act in relation to others, rather than short sighted concerns and outcomes for oneself..
What is actually good or loving about the God of the bible? I don't think there is anything positive about the God of the bible.
Brilliant
How does love demonstrate we have free will if we don't choose who we love?
Also Rafael if morality is based off of love and we don't choose love... morality would be based off of belief or whatever you're convinced of uncontrollably and if we do choose love that might mean morality is based on choice... kind of painted yourself into a corner there.
“That’s performance art” 😂😂😂
If god gave me free will, then I have authority to not believe that there is any god.
Love the way matt told the caller to F off
"love is that state of being in which another person's happiness is integral to one's own" --Robert Heinlein
in other words, if you love someone, their happiness (or well being) is an essential part of your own happiness (or well being) You can't be happy if the other person isn't happy.
I see nothing in the God of the Bible that fits this definition.
I love every host on this show. I could not summon the patience they have to deal with these people. I definitely don’t have the eloquence or knowledge either.
If god can do anything, then sin would be impossible.
@Pretzel Boggins
Can you fly (by flapping your arms) ?
No. god made the world so that you can't fly. You have no choice in the matter.
Similarly, he could have made the world so that you can't sin.
You'd still have free will, but sin would not be a choice. Only good choices available. Simple !
"We didn't even get to the subject of slavery" *delightfully infectious guttural weez*
Love you Don!!!
I remember the Adam and Eve bible story being told to me as a child. It didn’t make any sense to me then, either. I remember being mystified at all the contradictions and the older I got the less sense it made. I never had a single defining moment that turned me into an atheist. It was more a gradual adding up over the years until at about 12 or so I didn’t have any belief left at all.
Yeah, I've noticed when all Christian apologists are backed into a corner, they start trying to be philosophical saying things like "Well how do you know morality exists? How do you know this isn't a simulation? What is love?".

@@hamfastgamwich Holy Cow! Hi Walker. That's the 2nd 1st I've gotten in 2 days. I do ...uh "proofread the Internet"?...a bit as I stroll around. A snide reply now and then. Mostly nothing.
Never not ever has anyone replied with a nice thanks.
The other one was after I referred, in passing in a post, to something someone had said. Not recommending or linked. And a passing reader dug into it and asked my thoughts.
These may be small things. But both have delighted me. Thank you so much.
I love Don and his dismissive laughter 😂😂
Capital G!!! Jesus Christ that's hilarious 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
If God is all-powerful, why does he need people to speak on 'Gods' behalf?
Couldn't god clear all of this 'miscommunication' up in the blink of an eye?

Lmaooo.... "stfu!" 🤣🤣 A lil' harsh, but a lil' deserved. Feel bad for the guy bc he's obviously torn and sees the cracks in his beliefs.
Don mentioned the Deist God, who created everything and then went on a fishing trip. I quite like that God. I see him sitting there watching stars explode, suns fading, just enjoying the show. And leaving us to work it out for ourselves.
I love how jovial Don is!
"That's performance art." Don Baker, ladies and gentlemen. I laughed hard, but when Don started laughing I fucking derailed.
Morality doesn’t come from a book. If that were true, we would never have survived as a species long before the bible and the Abrahamic were ever even thought of.
Morality is what enables us to cooperate with each other and to feel empathy and love for other people.
This is true of all humans regardless of what religion or lack of we have.
Can a theist honestly believe that without a god he would actually WANT to commit murder and the only thing holding him back is fear of punishment? No, of course not. An atheist doesn’t want to commit murder, either and hold dear the very same values of love and caring for others that theists do. We just don’t attribute those values to a god. It’s simple. We treat others the way we would like to be treated ourselves.
It seems that the spartans (however true that was) is what you get with this sort of mentality....to a degree.
Will they be bad ass warriors? Absolutely.
How long will a society filled with warriors always fighting? Not many generations as they lose more than they gain over time. Whatever the point is of being able to afford a 10/20/30% loss of population do to defeat etc...at some point, your tribe just implodes on itself.
It can't keep itself going.
Don and that chuckle are golden, lol.
