Yeah, I think he was having trouble hearing the people he was talking to over the voices of indoctrination doing apologetic gymnastics in his head. Overall, I think he handled it well.
Most people, when they lay roots/foundation on a belief, religious or not, seem to spend more time in a conversation about said belief not fully considering the other person's view but instead thinking on how to defend theirs when a problem arises. The larger the belief, the more we throw up any kind of defense we can, be they true or not. Religion is one of those things that people have literally died to uphold. It is tough to move away from the apologetic stance.
Holy crap, my heart just stopped for a second or two; what you've said is exactly what it boils down to!! It makes the alarm bells and sirens go off in my head though I've never been a theist. We are not the ones to be saved, but those brainwashed, indoctrinated people are! It's pure and utter blackmailing.
More like showing him the truth about Santa-Christ. Nothing was taken away other than the deception he was perhaps already wondering about some possibility of.
To expand on the Santa thing, parents use him to keep kids in check to be good so they get rewarded and the same goes for most religion, to keep them in check the same way
I disagree. As a person who is wrong infrequently enough to enjoy being wrong when it happens, I can easily imagine why the caller laughed. Religions don't make a person right, but they give the persistent illusion of being right. So persistent in fact that it may seem even when it's wrong it's right. Imagine how the parts of the brain struggling to correct such a position must feel when the truth finally becomes too obvious to not be recognized. - That said, I do recognize the humor in what you were saying and the multiple potential ways of taking it. Yeah, theists calling in should be prepared for a metaphorical wake-up call. :)

Funny how every time someone asks Matt "where do you come from" he instantly answers "My parents had sex". Its became an inside joke on the show for years and still makes me laugh everytime.
No, it's just a damn obvious point that no Christian has ever uttered on the show. We're sort of waiting for someone to answer it correctly on the show. It's an inside joke for people that actually, seriously, ask "well then, where did you come from?" It IS true, though. =)
Matt did answer it correctly. It could be the answer is we don't know. That is if they are talking about the origins of the Universe. It's patently easy to answer if they are creationists. Either way it's a poorly phrased question.
Imagine him answering that every time someone was looking for him and he just came back from the bathroom :p 'Matt! where did _you_ come from?' 'Huh? My parents had sex.' 'What?! Oh fucking hell Matt! I was looking all over for you, the show is about to start.'
When people ask the question 'Where did you come from?' They are really saying 'how did we come to exist'. By giving an answer 'I don't know' just makes the Theist think that they have the answer. Scientists have a pretty good idea on how stars, planets and chemical elements are formed and there are some plausible theory's on RNA turning in to DNA although yet to be demonstrated. To be fair this caller from Nigeria is only a generation away from his hunter gatherer ancestors and hasn't had time to question the JU-JU and magic beans that the Christian missionary's brought them.
He's from a country that still tortures non believers. To even question it could get you dragged behind a car until you have no flesh. Therefore....god.
I get what you mean but atheist =/= shouting there is no God. You can be an atheist and pretend you believe in God for the sake of your own life. He clearly never questioned it since he's defending the existence of it.

@Ryan Orchard Damn Ryan. You are so smart. Gosh. We are so impressed with your most excellent critical thinking skills. I can hardly wait until your book comes out. Good job. Very well done.
And understanding the correct usage of words is clearly not yours. It's not hyperbole if you use the word "literally", nor was it literally true anyway.
+Eric Smith You use "believe in" and "faith" in odd ways. Words have multiple definitions. You are using the word "faith" in two instances. Each uses a different facet of the word. So they are not "the same thing". You are conflating "faith" in god (or some other invisible thing) with "faith" in one's own mental capacity (whose existence is already established). +Deal with it bitch doesn't have the "evidence of things unseen" type of "faith" in reason. One can believe THAT something exists (that would be believing "in" its existence)...yet not hold it in high regard.
+Eric Smith faith is believing something without evidence or in spite of evidence to the contrary. We have a whole lifetime of evidence for our mental capacity working. That is not faith because there is evidence for it
People are now so desperate to show that the universe created itself from nothing. Which appears to be immediately an oxymoron. Nonsense remains nonsense even if high-powered scientists say it.
Sulfen Africa does have public schools and colleges, many of which were started by Christian missionaries and Christian people. Research it. The majority of US schools including Harvard were started by Christians. Atheists have always been slow on education and modernization.
Dom_90 you are both right. Atheist have only recently been getting a more firm grasp on the education system, but religious schools brainwash their students in some ways.
One cannot posit Gods as the reason for, or a cause of anything, until those Gods are proven to exist... The Faith Based Brain finds this concept incomprehensible.
Reasonable Speculation One can posit anything. One cannot, however, expect (let alone demand) that anyone else find it reasonable or accept the belief. I can posit Russell's Teapot, and live as though it exists, but that's all I can do.
Q: Why are you not an X? (Muslim in this case) A: Because my parents are Y. (Christian in this case) That pretty much explains why the vast majority are of any given faith. It has almost nothing to do with truth, evidence, or reality.

"I guess that's what we're supposed to believe it" this almost made me cry.... How can a system convince people to conform so thoroughly that they don't value truth? It's as if the church found a society that is so fucked up that the people are absolutely desperate for comfort and will believe whatever makes them feel better but still do absolutely nothing to help them...
It's been called the "Opiate" of the masses... For a reason. Most persons want a simple answer to questions that none can answer so simply. "Why are we here?". "What happens when we die?" Religion gives an answer, albeit a simple, but useless one. That way you can go back to figuring out where you're next meal is coming from....
IVAN IVONOVICH very true mate, too true for comfort. I often hear "well if it's comforting to them ('' being ultra religious people) then let them believe it" from people who haven't seen the damage these beliefs can do to themselves and others. If a being powerful enough to create a working universe decided that a book was a suitable way to get its point across, surely it would be utterly flawless and free of any contradiction. It would be readable in every language and even to blind people or people without needing any translation. If you can create a universe, you would be incapable of making mistakes.
I've created plenty of universes and I'm quite capable of making mistakes. Creating a universe isn't all that difficult. Creating one like the one we live in would be a challenge for several reasons but with the right technology it should be safe and easy and with the right starting conditions no technology nor indeed intentional effort of any kind would even be needed. That said, the Bible has more mistakes in it than I think it's reasonable to expect any one being to make in a lifetime, even if that lifetime were billions of years long, so it seems much more likely to be the collective flawed works of many individuals with more flaws added by those who slapped the parts of it together. :)
You raise a very good point, if there was such a thing as a deity that decided to communicate with the hairless apes on this one specific planet then surely this all knowing deity would at least use a method of communication/language that could be understood by everyone. Mathematics would have been a much better choice.
Phurios Phoenix you have actually touched upon the very language God used to describe the universe. and every culture now is able to understand it rather well, i.e. Mathematics. The laws of math are discovered in the universe, which means they were there a priori, that is, at the time our universe came into existence and actually before the universe came into existence. Who is responsible for such laws? Is it the blind and unintelligent "evolution"? Here's just one tiny, yet powerful evidence for such things: In this 12+ mins video the two scientists are describing one of the most important discoveries of the 20th century. Beginning around 11 min, one of them tells us that our brains APPLY the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Watch "3 Applications of the (Fast) Fourier Transform (ft. Michael Kapralov)" on RUclips ruclips.net/video/aqa6vyGSdos/видео.html Advanced math such as Fast Fourier Transform is used by our brains to hear sound. How can our brain use a mathematical principle before it was ever discovered by Fourier in the 17-18th century, and calculus in general discovered by Newton/Leibnitz in the 17th ? Our computer power comes from programming. Computers don't know anything by themselves. They need to be programmed by a computer scientist, well versed in advanced Math, in order to apply advanced math and algorithms. Someone with very advanced knowledge of Mathematics and mathematical algorithms programmed our brains to be able to use FFT well before it was discovered in history. What an accident of nature? I dare say, not, but an intelligent and purposeful Creation! That's why people are without excuse! In his letter to the Romans church, Paul the apostle actually points to the universe as evidence for the Creator such that people are Without excuse for not knowing that God exists. Rom 1:18-20 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. Romans 1:18-20 NASB bible.com/bible/100/rom.1.18-20.NASB
here's something else for you to think through and honestly infer the most reasonable explanation based on scientific evidence, which is a language everyone understands. Below is the brief info from a published article of an evolutionist, who made an amazing discovery regarding super molecules, enzymes. The implications seem to be far reaching! www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2003/05/030506073321.htm University Of North Carolina School Of Medicine. "Without Enzyme Catalyst, Slowest Known Biological Reaction Takes 1 Trillion Years." ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 6 May 2003. . One scientist who studies these issues is Dr. Richard Wolfenden (an evolutionist), Alumni distinguished professor of biochemistry and biophysics and chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. In 1998, he reported a biological transformation deemed "absolutely essential" in creating the building blocks of DNA and RNA would take 78 million years in water. "Now we've found one that's 10,000 times slower than that," Wolfenden said. "Its half-time - the time it takes for half the substance to be consumed - is 1 trillion years, 100 times longer than the lifetime of the universe. Enzymes can make this reaction happen in 10 milliseconds." "Without catalysts, there would be no life at all, from microbes to humans," he said. "It makes you wonder how natural selection operated in such a way as to produce a protein that got off the ground as a primitive catalyst for such an extraordinarily slow reaction." "The enzymes we studied in this report are fascinating because they exceed all other known enzymes in their power as catalysts. We've only begun to understand how to speed up reactions with chemical catalysts, and no one has even come within shouting distance of producing their catalytic power." How can blind, unguided forces of nature produce enzymes, phosphatase in particular, and the most intelligent scientists with their most advanced labs cannot come even close to it? to quote again Wolfenden "no one has even come within shouting distance of producing their catalytic power"
+Alex Lasco As I'm at work at the moment I don't have time to fully explain to you how colossally moronic your post was but I shall make sure I get around this weekend to correcting all of your ridiculous claims. You have obviously latched on to this topic without even the most basic understanding of what the FFT is or how it actually works. Further more you seem to lack even the most rudimentary understanding of biology, specifically how brains interpret auditory signals. In the mean time I'd like you to look up the definition of an argument from ignorance and authority is as you have used both and more logical fallacies in this one posting.

I once taught the children of Missionaries from Nigeria. Big Smiles. Big hugs. Big, big proud savagery and ignorance. They beat their children with a wooden rod. The children were absolutely terrified of the their own parents. They were allowed no TV, movies, swimming pools, bikes or play with other children. They once punished the theft of a few dollars from mom's purse by rubbing pepper oil all over the youngest kids body and he ran around screaming and crying for hours. Completely irrational zealots. In the wildest backwoods of the Appalachians and in the swamps of Miss. I have never seen the equal. It was primitive behavior by any standards.

This man is definitely a victim of colonial missionary conversion. Creating a situation where residence's access to social programs, physical necessities and foreign aid is tied inextricably with their participation in a religion is going to create this kind of confusion and ignorance.

DwiteTheSpriteKnight I wouldn’t say he is close minded. This call might very well be the first time he has been really challenged about his belief in god. This caller is from my country, and I understand. The concept of god is so ingrained in us that doubting it is like doubting the existence of air. The disconnect from god and reality is so extreme, that a biology teacher that teaches you evolution and it’s natural processes, could also be a Sunday school teacher, and not care about the contradiction. It’s like that cognitive dissonance has been shut off, since birth, and for this caller it got triggered
They don’t even doubt other religions, they view it as different gods co existing, and a Muslim will go to a Muslim heaven and Christian to a Christian heaven, even tho both texts contradict
It's sad that people are taught such flawed ways of seeing the world, OBIEJE TOCHUKWU but, of course, you are correct. However, the cognitive dissonance is not shut off. It's simply tuned out like a constant background noise that you learn to ignore in order to get by. The caller seemed to have noticed it near the end of the call and laughed at the recognition that he was smarter than the people who wrote the Bible. :)
why does god need worshipping at all? I mean, he's god (if he exists of course) and powerful beyond any human imagination, but no, he needs worshippers and people who love him. Why? Feeling loney? Ego problems? What is it?
I cannot BELIEVE there are still people on this planet that ask the question “how did we come about” I mean really. Man-kind has come this far technologically and industrially and academically, and yet there are people in the world so poorly educated that they don’t understand the origins of life and the universe. This shit starts with the parents, by the way. If parents show interest in science and show interest in the most fundamental things about our existence, and how truly beautiful the system is set up, if parents would simply introduce children to the idea of questioning the world around you, rather than relying on faith & the “unknown” there would be so many brilliant people and discoveries made out there. Not to mention the fact that people need a set of rules from a book to have a sense of morality in life. Pathetic, really. Yet, people dismiss science as too complex or too hard to understand and they retreat to the comfort of the idea of heaven & a god. It is truly, truly sad to think about how much money & time has been wasted by the brainwashed church going population. Time that could’ve been spent learning, discovering, building & creating. Not praying to the sky *just in case* I’m not blaming one person, I’m trying to enlighten those that may stumble across this comment in a state of confusion. Ditch everything you’ve EVER been told about religion and start learning about the origins of the universe, the origins of life, chemistry and physics. You won’t regret it.

It's an uphill battle fighting against a lifetime of indoctrination designed to deprive a person of the ability to make rational judgements. Kudos to caller for taking the first steps along the path to mental freedom.
Love Tracie for handling such callers the way she does. Matt is solid in his logic and putting forth arguments...but Tracie's style of delivery makes it easier to digest. All the best to these guys...learning loads from them guys.
This wasn't hilarious, it was just sad. Clearly this man has been brainwashed and is beginning to question his religion and struggling with the cognitive dissonance.
I honestly can't help but feel bad for this guy. If he really is calling from Nigeria, it wouldn't be a stretch to think that he's never heard any conflict with his beliefs and probably never questioned it himself since he never really had any reason to. I can at least admire that he stepped out of his comfort zone and didn't make an ass of himself trying to defend slavery like a typical professional apologist.
@@mattskiba25 This is so condescending man! My reply is based on your comment which I'm just seeing now. I don't know how you've changed over the months.

quercus no you don't. You DON'T believe, but it's not a choice. Belief is something that is the natural outcome of your evaluation of a proposition, whether that evaluation is rational or irrational
And yet you can choose to overlook your real feelings and give lip service (and front-brain service) to a belief that you simply refuse to question. Been there, done that.Seen "Raisin in the Sun?" At one point the daughter says, "There is no god!" And the mother slaps her across the face and states, "In THIS house, there IS a God!"When I was a young teen, and began to doubt because it was so absurd, I was given that choice. Believe, or get slapped across the face as hard as my mother could and have her gloat over me about it, because in THAT house, there WAS a God! I "believed" for years longer. What a waste of time and resources. And brain power.I know what I is to be forced at age 3 to profess your willingness to die for Jesus' sake. To stand and let lions rip you to shreds while you call out how much you love Jesus.I never really felt that G-Bus had done anything for me that I needed done...but I had to be willing o be shredded by lions for him. What a useless, worthless piece of shit that G-Bus was to my 3-year old self! And it never got any better. I was simply afraid even to "think" about it once I was threatened with the Raisin in the Sun option.
It always amazes me when believers appear to be dumbfounded that atheists do not believe in god. They give the impression that they cannot wrap their heads around why ANYONE would NOT believe in their god The irony of their befuddlement is not just amusing; it is difficult to comprehend! To me, it is the non-believers who have more standing to express and feel this astonishment that people can actually believe in things for which there is no evidence - AND that they believe faith (the suspension or reason, logic and critical thinking) is actually SUPERIOR to science, logic and tangible evidence! This is even more bizarre when you consider that religion/god is the ONLY area of their lives in which they accept things on faith. They will tell you it would be silly to use faith at their jobs, for instance. Agreed!! And since they do agree with this, it is even more incomprehensible that they so eagerly, willingly and readily suspend all the rational laws of nature and the world when speaking of their god - arguably one of the most important parts of their lives.
Hi. I'm starting up a religion as I believe we come from yellow giants descended from orbits planet in our solar system we have been shrunk down and if we believe in the yellow giants they will come and save us all
It can be indeed. At a point it felt like they were lightly bullying the caller, only that with founded arguments. The caller I think was standing on very weak bases of his believe and lacking conviction big time. Most probably he's an atheist by now.
Yeah, Matt has some issues getting on the level of less smart callers and walking them through logic that is trivial to him. Sometimes, he needs to sit back and let Tracie do more of the talking.
Bottom line, his parents told him what to believe. There are seconds where you can tell the guy is trying to think critically but his indoctrination pulls him back.

Imagine him answering that every time someone was looking for him and he just came back from the bathroom :p
'Matt! where did _you_ come from?' 'Huh?
This is cute. He's never thought before.

He's from a country that still tortures non believers. To even question it could get you dragged behind a car until you have no flesh. Therefore....god.

Reason before faith.That's all.
Once evidence for a claim is provided, faith is no longer required. To the religious faith is somehow a virtue though.
Not with the dictionary I'm using.
Reason /trumps/ faith maybe. But A before B suggests that B belongs (or may belong) in the lineup. Faith doesn't.

Here's just one tiny, yet powerful evidence for such things:
In this 12+ mins video the two scientists are describing one of the most important discoveries of the 20th century. Beginning around 11 min, one of them tells us that our brains APPLY the Fast Fourier Transform
(FFT).
Watch "3 Applications of the (Fast) Fourier Transform (ft. Michael Kapralov)" on RUclips
ruclips.net/video/aqa6vyGSdos/видео.html
Advanced math such as Fast Fourier Transform is used by our brains to hear sound.
Rom 1:18-20
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.
Romans 1:18-20 NASB

here's something else for you to think through and honestly infer the most reasonable explanation based on scientific evidence, which is a language everyone understands.
Below is the brief info from a published article of an evolutionist, who made an amazing discovery regarding super molecules, enzymes. The implications seem to be far reaching!
www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2003/05/030506073321.htm
University Of North Carolina School Of Medicine.
Enzymes can make this reaction happen in 10 milliseconds."
"Without catalysts, there would be no life at all, from microbes to humans," he said. "It makes you wonder how natural selection operated in such a way as to produce a protein that got off the ground as a primitive catalyst for such an extraordinarily slow reaction."
"The enzymes we studied in this report are fascinating because they exceed all other known enzymes in their power as catalysts. We've only begun to understand how to speed up reactions with chemical catalysts, and no one has even come within shouting distance of producing their catalytic power."
How can blind, unguided forces of nature produce enzymes, phosphatase in particular, and the most intelligent scientists with their most advanced labs cannot come even close to it?
to quote again Wolfenden
"no one has even come within shouting distance of producing their catalytic power"

I mean really.
I wouldn't call the caller ignorant, I would call him innocent. He seems genuinely interested in asking these questions for the first time. It's not his fault.
Agreed 100%
Derp Jesus: As an atheist I choose not to believe in gods of any kind. That is it.
You were born believing? Sounds like something you read in your magic book.
quercus no you don't.
Those who believe do so because others have programmed them. Those of us that do not are simply unwilling to accept unsupported claims.
Those who believe are just willing to accept someone else's unsupported word.
Kay Omholt-Montague my favorite tho, that I have gotten a few times is, "If you don't believe in God, then you must believe in the devil."
I think Tracy was awesome in the alien movies "get away from her you bitch!"
If the Bible is so wrong of where we came from, why do thiests think it would be correct telling where we are going?
Hi. I'm starting up a religion as I believe we come from yellow giants descended from orbits planet in our solar system we have been shrunk down and if we believe in the yellow giants they will come and save us all
Any time someone demonstrates better morals than their religious text, that is a good thing.
The level of this caller’s ignorance is out this universe!!!
Matt should be more patient and recognize where this caller comes from. But It is easy to write from my leaving room...
Benjamin Mock You have a room specifically for leaving?!
Funny. I suppose/hope it was VERY late when I wrote this uninteresting comment...
It can be indeed. At a point it felt like they were lightly bullying the caller, only that with founded arguments. The caller I think was standing on very weak bases of his believe and lacking conviction big time. Most probably he's an atheist by now.
Was, but got better. Thanks for noticing.
Yeah, Matt has some issues getting on the level of less smart callers and walking them through logic that is trivial to him. Sometimes, he needs to sit back and let Tracie do more of the talking.
Hey, while you got the guy from Nigeria on the phone can you ask him where my 1.5 million dollars in gold is?
