I asked Glen Benton to sign my original copy of Cannibal Corpse's first album because he did guest vocals on a couple tracks. Everyone else from CC put a neat autograph on it for me but Glen just signed his big ass name across the entire front cover lol
He was on a few songs for Butchered as well. Covered With Sores/Vomit the Soul! That was my shit in high school! I was kinda disappointed when he didn’t appear on Tomb…although that was their last REAL kick ass album! Don’t get me wrong…I like George and the crew…but there was just a serious mystique about them in that time during that lineup! Not even just in reference to Barnes but Rusay as well! But seeing where Barnes went after those 3 albums…😆😆😆
I hear a lot of people talking shit about Glen Benton for being a rather confrontational and controversial person, but I feel like his personality perfectly fits with the confrontational and controversial nature of Deicide's music. Additionally, Glen is such an exaggerated and over-the-top character that I can't help but find him hilarious even when he's trying to be intimidating or problematic. In other words, J-Dawg may have a lot of silly opinions, but he's right about one thing. If you don't like Deicide, You don't like death metal.
Deicide was absolutely groundbreaking, especially those first 3 albums. Some stagnation through the middle of the band's life but their last few efforts definitely showing a renewed spark. Glen is like the archetypal death metal uncle.
Deicide-S/T is my favorite record but the "When London Burns" live album is a close second, mainly because Glenn gets progressively hammered and his insults to the crowd before each song are hilarious.
Once upon a cross is my Favorit, but after watching this i have to listen to Legion again. I always enjoy your videos! Cheers from Austria and merry christmas
I still have that “If you don’t like Deicide you don’t like death metal” sticker I got from Hells Headbangers lol. Hope they do some more tongue in cheek merch like that or at least repress their Blakecrush tshirts. “No reply, no package, no refund, no shame.”
That’s crazy, I’ve been wearing my Deicide “Once upon the Cross” long sleeve I just ordered for the past 3 days. Nice to know somewhere someone is making a Deicide video around the same time
Appreciate the early present; the first two Deicide records are my favorite death metal albums of all time. All killer, no filler. Merry Christmas my 🥷
I met people who hate Deicide and they’re usually listening to “safe stuff” like Frozen Soul and Gatecreeper. Tells you everything about them. Anyways, great episode! Love me some Deicide. The last one I liked by them was Scars of the Crucifix but it’s no Deicide without the Hoffman brothers. Merry Christmas btw Jihub!
I might not be all that proud to own the Roadrunner United DVD, but the version of Dead By Dawn with Glen Benton in without the bass and with a full leather exectioner costume is fucking awesome.
It's a christmas miracle! Deicide, the perfect band for the holidays (or any celebration)! A jolly good time with some cozy tunes. Credit where credit is due, Legion really does live up to the reputation of stone cold classic, even with the popularity only a select few death metal bands managed to achieve. The proper evolutionary step in the essence of peak Slayer. The gold standard of controlled chaos, utter depraved catharsis & diabolical evocation, while not losing one bit of purpose in either underlying relation between guitars/bass & drum or in the structure of the arrangement. Utter elite infernal riffage galore above all. Pure distillation of furious vitriol in elite musical form. Hot take, but my favorite brief passage is the very start of the record. The first 30 seconds of unwieldy riffage for Satan Spawn, the Caco-Daemon sound like a prelude to Hernandez-era Immolation, especially the relation between drums (collapsing sacral architecture) & guitars (all-devouring hellfire). It's been a mighty long time since I've heard any Deicide after Once Upon The Cross, but you have convinced me to give the other mentioned titles another shot, when the timing in life suits. Definitely need to give the Exorcist release a shot, the musicians from Virgin Steele really were something special from the get-go with that little milestone. The opinions of etiolated twinks & their wanky necrofagist drivel is obsolete, especially in the face of genuinely cathartic & timeless metal. Admittedly, haven't been listening to as much (new/unknown) extreme metal these months, hence why I'm curious on your thought on the following releases (apologies in advance if I asked these titles before): - Skepticism - Aes + Stormcrowfleet - Adramelch - Irae Melanox - Solitude Aeturnus - Into the Depths of Sorrow + Beyond the Crimson Horizon - Pagan Altar - Mythical & Magical - October Tide - Rain Without End - Esoteric - Metamorphogenesis PS Jiub's dank memes channel got itself a new subscriber, cheers! Respect for the never-ending grind & hails to the niche king! Cheers & best wishes in advance for a merry christmas & a happy new year, ya absolute madlad! ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡° ) (long overdue comment as a wishful push for the algorithm)
Those are probably my two most listened to Skepticism albums. Stormcrowfleet in particular is maybe the peak of that funeral doom style. Adramelch is great, love that album and the first two Dark Quarterer records as far as that kind of weird Italian '80s power metal goes. Solitude Aeturnus is great and those are my two favorites from them. They actually remind me a lot of a doom metal version of '80s Fates Warning at points on those two. I'm not familiar with that particular Pagan Altar album, but Judgement of the Dead is an all-time classic for me. That October Tide album's great, but my favorite is Grey Dawn, which seems to be pretty underrated nowadays. When I'm in the mood for Esoteric, I usually go with one of the two disc albums, particularly Epistemological Despondency or Paragon of Dissonance. I need to listen to their shorter albums like Metamorphogenesis and Subconscious Dissolution into the Continuum more.
Just recently found your channel and fuck me such a good one. Someone talking about band i like with some depth to it as well. Keep up the good work/Adam from Sweden
The only album I’ve ever heard that sounds of reminds me of Legion, would be Akercocke Goat of Mendes. I agree with you on Legion being one of the most evil death metal albums, period.
🔥Decide🔥!!! Glen featured in two songs for a band from Mex named Transmetal on their 1993 album one song being Infierno De Dante produced by Scott Burns. Also Corpsgrinder on their album after that Mexico Barbaro check out their early work.
I just subbed because J-Dawg mentioned this channel, awesome video - and Exorcist along with Virgin Steele is my favorite band of all metal, so now I gotta watch the Exorcist episode. Great video, man!!!
I got into Legion when it came out, got the self titled very quickly after it, I was around 13. I listened back to both albums a few years ago for the first time in quite a while & I was pleasantly surprised by how unhinged those albums sound. The riffs are heavy and all but some of the arrangements & mostly ol’ Glens vocals are unhinged. Especially for ‘91 or whenever it was.
fuck god, fuck jesus and fuck christmas! I picked up "serpents of the light" in the cutout bin of a local record store for $2, way back in 99. still have it and it used to inspire so much liquor drinking fuckery. cheers rfi!
I love Deicide. Glenn Benton seems like a cool guy nowadays. Who would hate a Death Metal band who wrote a whole album about a divorce? (Til Death Do Us Part) . Once Upon The Cross is good, but I like Serpents of the Light even better. Stench of Redemption I'd put with their first four
I've been rocking a lot of Stench lately, this episode was already running really long though so I didn't do too much with that one. A lot of songs on Incineratehymn are also about divorce.
It’s not « canon » but i friggin’ love « Desecration » from The Stench… awesome riffs… apart from that, I’m a Serpents of the Light guy through and through
I have always thought of Deicide as Slayer who leveled up, same band formation too, bass player, 2 guitar players, one blonde one brunette, and an iconic drummer. First Deicide is some of the catchiest death metal ever written, Legion is technical death metal, true technical death metal, of musicians who aren't necessarily musically trained, but pushed their abilities to the limit, Once is kind of a combination of the first 2, and I hate that we can't hear the original version that is like 25 mins, holy shit that would be beautiful. I am not a fan of Serpents, I have tried but it sounds like they were influenced heavily by black metal and plugged a metal zone directly into a recording console, and I am not a fan. Deicide tragically died in a plane crash in 97, RIP.
Father!!!! Why have you forsaken me?!?! I also never understood the hate that "once upon..." got, well maybe not hate, but it wasn't as revered as the first 2. For me it is Deicides #1 in my book. Very weird bunch those brothers, they were prolific with deicide, then boom something happened between them and glen, then they released one uneven album, and it looks like we have seen and heard the last of them.
Perfect Xmas episode, took me 20+ years to properly revaluate Deicide, and your highlighting of the elements that made/make them so unique further laid to rest any doubts about their position in the pantheon of death metal gods. Thank you

I like deicide, but they're like sepultura to me. The earlier albums are better as whole, but the better songs come out in the later albums yet it feels like there's more filler. There's a swedish band Luciferion, they've got a bonus track on their first album called the voyager, as they state, dedicated to bands like morbid angel and deicide that I think emulates their sound pretty well. And I think because the song is a beautiful dedication to both band's sounds, it was the tremolo groove with the brutality that really separated them from bands like autopsy, death, suffocation, CC, obituary, etc. Its unfortunate with all these OSDM bands really. Due to one reason or another, the legendary status of their early material made it so that whatever they put out was always going to be seen as inferior unless they pushed boundaries again and set the new standard. An impossible expectation for anybody. As for the arbiters of what is and isn't br0ötal, that's been ruined by 2nd wave+ death core and their 9 string drop G shit with a drummer that might as well be credited to a macbook pro. There's some good ones out they're but they're way too drowned out by the mediocrity And you probably hate shit like this but how much do you know about the french bm scene? Mutiilaton, vlad tepes, anorexia nervosa?
I actually did an episode on Luciferion a long time ago, it was Episode 119, also had Infestdead who are another good Deicide follower kind of band. I like a lot of French black metal, I covered Mütiilation and Vlad Tepes on Episode 265. I need to listen to Anorexia Nervosa more, but I liked Drudenhaus at least. I plan on covering Kristallnacht, Seigneur Voland, and Sombre Chemin at some point too, maybe also Osculum Infame and Hirilorn. I like a few Blut aus Nord albums too but I'm not really into Deathspell Omega at all. That newer band Catacombes has put out some of my favorite recent black metal. There's a lot of good death metal from there too like Massacra, Mercyless, Catacombs (different band than Catacombes with an "e"), Agressor, and Loudblast.
@@radiofreeinnsmouth1337 Ah sick, I'm new to the french scene so I didn't know they went under an umbrella name. Will give a watch and your name drops a listen.
Yeah, Les Légions Noires was like Mütiilation, Belkètre, Vlad Tepes, Torgeist, and a whole bunch of other projects that were basically all the same guys just playing under different names. Kristallnacht, Seigneur Voland, and Sombre Chemin all kind of grew out of guys being involved in the band Funeral but I don't know if they had a name for their collective.
@@radiofreeinnsmouth1337 Ah okay, good to know the old lore now. They definitely had an intriguing catchiness to their sound compared to the primal shit Norway was outputting at the time. I ❤ The Beatles. Love this band. Yeah these newer tech and core lovers just don't fucking get it. Try to have them down pick at 100 bpm and their arms fall off. Whatever though. Glen is one of the coolest bassist/vocalists though Secthdamon will always be my favorite. Great video man keep them up.

Deicide, yet another awesome sounding band with wanker Satanic lyrics.
You've gone too far this time sir! Insineratehymn and In Torment In Hell are garbage albums, beyond rehabilitation
Deicide. It’s good to be joined by real men that know how to play good death metal.
