" Thousand Swords" literally was a life changing experience. As a fan of Black Metal , nothing can touch it post Burzum.

Really great, thoughtful musical analysis here: excellent job, it made me reconsider the band's catalogue.

I heard Capricornus is a teacher in Russia now. I saw someone post it on the old website nuclear war now. There was also a picture of someone who looked like him teaching.

First time checking this channel. Great analysis. I especially agree with the Manilla Road comparison (both bands are in my top of all time).

Early Graveland is quality black metal, & they nailed the mood better than most of their piers at the time IMO, especially with the In the glare of burning churches, Celtic Winter, & Carpathian wolves releases. However I can't say that I was taken much by anything that I heard post Thousand Swords.

Clip from 12:00 on actually reminds me of Blood on Ice. And the vocals of Graveland remind me of LLN or the current underground Portuguese sound.

Good episode - it would have awesome if you threw in Infernum on this episode as well.

It's been so long I can't remember if this one was good or not. Glad you enjoyed it! I think if I were to re-do it I'd probably split it up into multiple episodes between the early spooky stuff and the later more epic material, and then probably have an episode just on Infernum and Thor's Hammer. Like both of them a lot, especially the first Infernum album.

Yesterday I watched it again (so, thank you once more), and I've noticed you may have missed a strong influence on Graveland's early discography, rather than Bathory: LLN, and Mutilation in particular. What do you think about it?

Yo RFI, I can’t remember the episode but I believe you mentioned neofascist Russian rap. Could you someday do a primer on this genre? I don’t even know where to start, I’ve tried looking stuff up and I’m not having luck. Someone recommended Sid+Ram with the track Ramsing and this is pretty close to what I’m looking for; hopefully this is the kind of stuff you were referencing.

Yeah, it's sort of adjacent to a lot of the hardcore over there. My favorite is ATL, he's a metalhead and started out very harsh and kind of gabba-influenced, nowadays his stuff is more emotional and trippy, dips into some weird electronic territory. Stolniygrad (Стольный ГрадЪ will probably bring up more songs) are straight-edge and folk-influenced; their earlier stuff is really angry rap and their newer stuff kind of mixes that with some pagan metal and groove metal sounds. I actually did an episode on them, ep. 177. Krasnoe Derevo (Красное дерево) and Gio Pika (Гио ПиКа) are both lo-fi Russian prison rap stuff that gets pretty right wing. SH Kera is kind of in the same vein but way more explicitly political (check out the album cover for Чёрное солнце lol). There's a couple compilations out there called New Dawn (Новый рассвет) and Right Wing Music (Правая музыка) that have a whole lot of good stuff on them: rap, folk music, metal, dance music stuff etc.

@@radiofreeinnsmouth1337 thanks. I really appreciate the detailed response. It gives me a great starting point.
When you get the time you should check out Svolder and Blood Libel (I believe it’s the same guy). Killer intolerant Canadian BM with some GBK vibes. I initially heard of them from Sven on TDS. Not a lot of info about them out there, but worth looking into.

Definitely Following the Voice of Blood if you like the Thousand Swords style. The Celtic Winter and Carpathian Wolves are also recommended but they're in a much darker style.

Huge Graveland fan, one of the first Black Metal bands i was introduced to (alongside Nokturnal Mortum). His early stuff are all masterpieces, ive corresponded with him on several occasions, etc. But I grew disappointed with the output after "Memory & Destiny", when things became full on Viking/Nordland, i feel like the music lost alot of its character? Its nuance? Its special appeal? The songs ceased to stick in my mind. Like listening to "Hour of Ragnarok" it all just sounds like the same idea repeated. Whereas before each album felt like an experimentation, a unique idea, a new take, etc. I cant help but feel like Capricornus was a more important aspect than we assume? Like a muse perhaps? PS: When you mentioned Graveland borrowing riffs from "Wrath of the Tyrant" i could tell you knew your stuff.

What era? His are more interesting than nearly all bm vocalists. Croak is superior.
Aside, The drumming of Capricornus gave them a totally unique rhythm. And they more a less adopted it throughout.
