During attack the bigger dude should stay behind as the last man but and the smaller cb should roam further up. Smaller body also means lesser energy burnt. Messi, Park Ji Sung, Ashley Cole, Evra every super athletic players tend to be smaller in stature. I'd like to see Haaland scoring against faster defender, all CB are slow and stocky nowadays but tthe strikers are supee fast.
In football size, strength, or physicality doesn't usually matter except for GK and CB, and thats what makes Canavaro unique. He is severely undersized for his position but still he manages to become one of the best in his position. He might not be the best, but he surely is amongst the best

Just like Casillas. A goalie who seemed to be short for his position but still showed the world who he really is with his speed and reflexes, which I guess could be as a result of how he maneuvered his body with his lower center of gravity as well.
Moral of the story - whichever position you play on the football pitch, you can make up for any of your weakness with aggression and intelligent play. If you have an excellent reading of the game, you can use that to overcome any flaws, and play the game well into your 30s and maybe even hit 40.
Maldini is probably the best ever, Beckenbauer and Baresi are in contention as well (even tho, personally, i wouldn't say Beckenbauer was just a defender, he had a lot of other qualities and he played in a very different way from most defenders) but 2006 WC Cannavaro was the best defender of all time (just in that tournament) and it is not even close...people really need to go back and be reminded of that performance, it was almost a supernatural performance, surreal, if you are young, you probably never experienced seeing something like that from a defender, but you probably did when watching CR7 and Messi playing.

I saw him on several occasions when he was playing for Real and the team came to the hotel I used to work. He was not tall, you can say that he was short compared to his teammate van Nistelrooy but ,man, he had a body like a rugby player. Incredibly well built. Roberto Carlos was actually even shorter but the same shape. I remember wondering why the hell are they having even the forearm muscles so well worked out. So yeah, they surely perfected what they had compared with other players more gifted by the nature.

Even prime Ronaldo at 22 suffered Vierchowod at 39 Cannavaro got the glory for that fantastic World Cup

One for ground interception/man marking and one for aerial dominance

I really love these vids but my biggest gripe with the channel is not saying the stats. He could’ve showed his tackles,interceptions,tackles per game, clean sheets, 1on1s, times dribbled pass etc. he could even compare it with other great defenders to make it more significant.

I agree that Cannavaro was one of the best defenders off all time, but I don't think Nesta was less. Italy ever had amazing defenders and goalkeepers, it's very hard compare them. It's the same with Buffon, because Peruzzi, Pagliuca or Zenga weren't inferior. But great video, keep going with other legends.
