- While many agree that Paolo Maldini is the greatest defender of all time, from a purely defensive aspect, it’s not wrong to say that Fabio Cannavaro could be was the 2nd best defender of all time. In his prime, he was an absolute menace on the pitch. Even the fastest and best dribblers had to be at the very top of their game just to avoid him in open play.
So how GOOD Was Paolo Cannavaro Really?

I haven’t watched him but ima assume he’s a all timer obviously if he gets in the same convo as Maldini and nesta

I still remember Cannavaro performance in the 2006 world cup, it was the best defender performance I've ever seen a national tournament. A true legend and leader 👑
Zambrotta and Nesta were better more

@@MadPaperMario not really Nesta was injured for most of the tournament, Italy best players in 2006 world cup was Cannavaro, Buffon and Pirlo.

Cannavaro in 2006, is elite defender.
His wc 2006 is one of best individual performances ever.
when I started playing football as a kid, because of this man I voluntered to play cb position while everyone else wanted to be a striker, pure charisma, pure talent best of best
The streets will never forget fabio
He’s trash and bad looking
He is not even that good overatted player

Champion team leader & best defender on the best defensive team.
@@MadPaperMario I assume you are 'generatrion z' kid? who was born in 2000 or later... Otherwise, Cannavaro was a beast and a monster he could jump and tower up against Zidane/Adriano(Inter.) and win a Header while he was 175 only.. Go sleep kid.
Fabio's athleticism was unmatched
Its his speed. No point for strikers to have great airgame or wtv if the defender gets there first. CB should be one big dude and one small dude. During attack the bigger dude should stay behind as the last man but and the smaller cb should roam further up.
Smaller body also means lesser energy burnt. Messi, Park Ji Sung, Ashley Cole, Evra every super athletic players tend to be smaller in stature. I'd like to see Haaland scoring against faster defender, all CB are slow and stocky nowadays but tthe strikers are supee fast.
The Italian commentary of the second goal in 06 semi final with Germany, is pure gold.. screaming Cannavaro few times and then that delPiero goal
ANCORA CANNAVARO!!
As someone who is also 175cm, I take offense to being called 5'8! 175 cm is 5 feet and 8.88 inches which rounds to 5'9!
I'm 5'5" 💀
@@smoke91My uncle is 4'9 lol
Now I feel happy being 180 cm
😭😭😭 my apologies king 👑
you are short.
Never doubt the "short" guys. I miss seeing him play
Moral of the story - whichever position you play on the football pitch, you can make up for any of your weakness with aggression and intelligent play. If you have an excellent reading of the game, you can use that to overcome any flaws, and play the game well into your 30s and maybe even hit 40.
perfectly said brother 👏 🫡
In football size, strength, or physicality doesn't usually matter except for GK and CB, and thats what makes Canavaro unique. He is severely undersized for his position but still he manages to become one of the best in his position. He might not be the best, but he surely is amongst the best
Size no but strength is the most important thing you need as a defender as you need to be physical
@@fildafernandes4366 Yup you need both upper body and lower body strength. Cannavaro was deceptively strong for his size. His shorter height also gave him a low center of gravity, meaning he could make tight manuevers more smoothly, thus helping him keep up with dribbling forwards.
Just like Casillas. A goalie who seemed to be short for his position but still showed the world who he really is with his speed and reflexes, which I guess could be as a result of how he maneuvered his body with his lower center of gravity as well.
@@mohammedahmmed9827Iker is 6'1 he isn't short in fact he is taller than Yann Sommer
Everything matters for all positions, a strong winger can also be helpfull, its not a must ofc
Maldini is probably the best ever, Beckenbauer and Baresi are in contention as well (even tho, personally, i wouldn't say Beckenbauer was just a defender, he had a lot of other qualities and he played in a very different way from most defenders) but 2006 WC Cannavaro was the best defender of all time (just in that tournament) and it is not even close...people really need to go back and be reminded of that performance, it was almost a supernatural performance, surreal, if you are young, you probably never experienced seeing something like that from a defender, but you probably did when watching CR7 and Messi playing.
True, but when R9 has Cannavaro in his all time XI that just shows all you need to know about his defending
@@RaymarFootball I mean yeah, it would be pretty hard to not put him in an hypotetical all time 11 to be honest, i think with Maldini at LB and with Beckenbauer and Cannavaro as CB.

Just asked. I don't know about these American measures, which are quite unnecessary.
Same size as Baresi, both monsters 💪🏼
Even tho he was short, I remember that he was a beast at headers. He had such good timing and a good vertical leap, so he won many headers against taller forwards
Also baresi was 5'9 (176cm) and is in the top 5 defenders ever
Baresi was a libero, not a stopper. He was required to be good with feet and a decent defender
@@antoniousai1989 still a central back, also libero (real ones, not modern ones like stones, calafiori etc) used to sit behind the main defence, so basically baresi was alone behind 3 players and caught players with his extreamly good positioning and timing, didnt had to be good with the ball actually.
beckenbauer was a "modern" libero, he was good at passing and shooting, was basically a cdm.
baresi is my goat of the defenders.
@@EnormeEkoH Yeah, but he wasn't a top defender. He was a good one, but even in his team, Maldini and Costacurta were way stronger in the defensive phase.
@@antoniousai1989 i disagree, i think no one ever has been as good as baresi, even Maradona himself said he was the beast, and asked for his shirt (even tho he destroyed that Milan all alone lol) there was also Maldini but was a 20/22 years old one, very young, hes clesrly in the top 3 anyway, personally the best as i said
@@EnormeEkoH Baresi> Maldini> Costacurta>Nesta>Cannavaro.. nonetheless Cannavaro is still an elite defender.

Point of Correction: Italy did concede a goal in 2006 when Christian Zacardo (if I remember correctly) scored an own goal in a 1-1 draw against USA. So Italy conceded 1 goal in open play which was an own goal and 1 other goal from Zidane's penalty in the final
It was a free kick

Bek idola ❤
I saw him on several occasions when he was playing for Real and the team came to the hotel I used to work. He was not tall, you can say that he was short compared to his teammate van Nistelrooy but ,man, he had a body like a rugby player. Incredibly well built. Roberto Carlos was actually even shorter but the same shape. I remember wondering why the hell are they having even the forearm muscles so well worked out. So yeah, they surely perfected what they had compared with other players more gifted by the nature.
Tell me you're too young to actually see these legends play if in a video about Cannavaro you mention Maldini 50 times and Nesta zero times. Maldini was declining (still world class though) when Cannavaro was rising. But Nesta was even younger than Fabio and was concidered even better at the time!
I mean if R9 thinks Cannavaro was the better defender, I think that holds a ton of weight

He was better at Ajax
11 minutes of Cannavaro jacking up some of the game's greatest attackers. I had no idea he was that nasty. This montage is pure filth. 😤
Before Cannavaro, Italy had another two 5'9" central defenders: Franco Baresi and Pietro Vierchowod. Both World Champions in 1982 in spite of not playing.
Baresi is often considered the best pure defender ever and in the same league of Beckenbauer.
Vierchowod was considered the toughest opponent ever faced by Maradona, Van Basten, Batistuta, Lineker and many others. Even prime Ronaldo at 22 suffered Vierchowod at 39
Cannavaro got the glory for that fantastic World Cup

The 175 cm Cannavaro jump higher than 195 cm Luca Toni.
he got hops!
pls do luis figo next
Really young messi is not to be joked with 😂
there was one goal scored in open play against US an OG by Zaccardo
Baresi is 5’9. And he’s the greatest Center back in the modern era.
Beckenbauer at 5’10.5 is the greatest ever.
So it’s not about height, it’s about ability to read the game and having the agility and physicality to take the ball off the attacker as a Center back.
Usually a tall man short man Center back combination always is the best synergy.
Eg Puyol, Pique. Cannavaro, Materrazi or Thuram. Baresi - Costacurta/Madini.
One for ground interception/man marking and one for aerial dominance
Is Baresi really considered the modern era? The time period he played is closer to the likes of Beckenbauer and Bobby Moore than modern CB's like Dias and Saliba.
@@MR12AMAZING Yep. He retired in 1997, he was something like a link between them. The Captain was a very peculiar player, i'm sure that if he were currently playing he would be a top class midfielder hands down, an incredible mix between Rodrigo and Kante

Just like the Premier League is the biggest league now, but English clubs don't win it often.
I don't know how old you are but I remember the 90s very clearly. We lost English football from terrestrial TV when the Premier league started and they started broadcasting Serie A matches instead, so I remember it well.

as Brazil has always had outstanding offensive players Italy has always had outstanding defensive players. Certainly Cannavaro has been one of the best but before him there have been Collovati, Gentile, Ferri, Bergomi, Costacurta, Vierchowod, Morini, Cuccureddu, Rosato, Burgnich, Guarneri, Cera, Salvadore, Picchi and the most elegant and technical Gaetano Scirea.
Serie A was the best league on the planet for 70 years. Of those 70 years, the absolute best decade of scorers came in the 90s and 2000s when all the worlds elite attackers joined.
Fabio dominated them all. So who cares if his clubs were less successful, he was often times the best defender in the best league with the best defense and defenders vs the best attackers.

I agree that Cannavaro was one of the best defenders off all time, but I don't think Nesta was less. Italy ever had amazing defenders and goalkeepers, it's very hard compare them. It's the same with Buffon, because Peruzzi, Pagliuca or Zenga weren't inferior. But great video, keep going with other legends.
He was something amazing to witness... But I don't know if he was the second best italian defender of all time, Alessandro Nesta was one of the most perfect defender I've ever seen...
Well franco baresi is only 176cm too, and talking about pure defensive skill he is arguably the best ever played ❤️.....stalled players like maradona, platini and many more like nothing ....just like maradona said about him Baresi is the maximum of a defender ❤ and the god father of Great Maldini
