I always think of André-Pierre Gignac when these types of lists pop up, the man was on fire at Marseille and getting called up to the French national team and decided he’d move to Tigres in Mexico. He was so beloved there that it convinced Florian Thauvin to move there from Marseille too. Two French National Team players moving to Mexico in their prime is unheard of
As a West Ham fan let me give some context to the Faubert to Real signing. When we signed him he was actually a promising young fullback after doing well for Bourdeaux in France. He did his achilles in pre-season and was out for ages, that's why he only played 8 games in his first season. He was definitely signed by Madrid to be a cheap backup with a high potential upside if he got back to his old form. Unfortunately for him he never recovered that form. It was still a surprising signing at the time but it wasn't totally insane as it looks now.
Not really, it was either join a Turkish team as their transfer window lasted longer, or rot in the Napoli reserves as he fell out with the coaching team and board, he’ll do well finish his loan and someone will sign him for free
Outside of the galacticos and some occasional good signings like Ramos. The Transfers of Real Madrid in the 2000's were very "opportunistic" and also a bit unlucky. Because the signed dudes like Faubert and Royston Drenthe, because of some promising starts, but got completely lost after that, and some players like van Nistelrooy, Robben, Sneijder (why the hell so many dutch guys?) who were World class right before or right after their time in Madrid.
For me Jay Jay Okocha to Bolton Wanderers seems like the most bizarre transfer out there. After having the most expensive tranfer for an African player at the time 🤯 (14 mil. pounds from Fenerbahce to PSG), he moved to Bolton on a free because he desperately wanted to play in the PL. Maybe he's ambition however, helped him not look down on Bolton and accept the move. Who knows maybe if he moved to a more competitive (or stronger at the time) EPL club he would had a far greater stint in the league and had achieved way more🤔
Bolton got some crazy names around that time , djorkayef , Hierro and Campo from Madrid , anelka I'm sure there was more .... They must of payed big signing bonuses
Most of the above were well past their best or plagued by injury. No one would touch okocha after his bad injury. Bolton & allardyce were masters of getting these hasbeens into a really good team. High risk but it paid off. I'm a life long bolton fan BTW and lived through them great years
You have to look for old Turkish League signings... Kidnapping a player, putting him in a yatch, sailing away for days to avoid rivals to locate him, and went back to the club at midnight to sign the deal.
I disagree about woodgate, he was highly highly rated and was a massive prospect and quite ahead of his time how comfortable he was on the ball, akin to rio, he was just plagued by injury, 18 million was massive back then but thats how rated he was, it was no where near as surprising as faubert
Portsmouth were one of the best teams outside the top 4 in the premier league at the time ..... he couldn't get a game with 2 separate top 4 teams (chelsea and arsenal) so they were probably the best side that he would be a regular starter for. He also won his only trophy in england playing with portsmouth - FA Cup 2008 despite playing for arsenal and chelsea .... so don't knock Pompey ! I'm biased as i support pompey .... but i dont think someone moving from arsenal reserves to a team pushing for the european places in the premier league is much of a shock
I don’t think gazza to rangers was that crazy, Rangers were very ambitious and trying to dethrone Celtic at the time and Gazza had just left Lazio and no one wanted him because he was getting overweight and had big attitude problems and alcoholism, even Rangers grew sick of his antics after a while
It seems more like you are just ignorant about a lot of these players. You keep saying "who" when they're all really well known players. Like Woodgate was a world class centre back at the time. Yeah he was injury prone but he was such a good player that Real thought it was worth the risk. And the whole reason people found Faubert joining Real was so hilarious was exactly _BECAUSE_ everyone knew who he was and knew he wasn't very good.
Pique to United was hardly bizarre given that he was came from Barca’s youth team at 17…United were signing a lot of overseas talent back then which Pique was one of them

Then he went to Kilmarnock fc
Choupo-Moting joined PSG because Tuchel was the new coach at PSG and he knows him from the time at Mainz 05
