My parents got me a World Book Encyclopedia set when I was in 4th grade. I read all the volumes and by the time I got to US History in 12 grade I wrote a four page essay on the imperialistic tendencies the US had in Latin America in the early 20th Century. It was titled... "Talons of the Eagle"

_In a manner that antagonized the Cuban people, the U.S. government used its influence to advance the interests of and increase the profits of the private American companies, which "dominated the island's economy".[47] By the late 1950s, U.S. financial interests owned 90% of Cuban mines, 80% of its public utilities, 50% of its railways, 40% of its sugar production and 25% of its bank deposits-some $1 billion in total.[51] According to historian Louis Perez, author of the book On Becoming Cuban, "Daily life had developed into a relentless degradation, with the complicity of political leaders and public officials who operated at the behest of American interests."[51] As a symbol of this relationship, ITT Corporation, an American-owned multinational telephone company, presented Batista with a Golden Telephone, as an "expression of gratitude" for the "excessive telephone rate increase" that Batista granted at the urging of the U.S. government.[47]
Earl E. T. Smith, former U.S. Ambassador to Cuba, testified to the U.S. Senate in 1960 that, "Until Castro, the U.S. was so overwhelmingly influential in Cuba that the American ambassador was the second most important man, sometimes even more important than the Cuban president."[60] In addition, nearly "all aid" from the U.S. to Batista's government was in the "form of weapons assistance", which "merely strengthened the Batista dictatorship" and "completely failed to advance the economic welfare of the Cuban people".[47] Such actions later "enabled Castro and the Communists to encourage the growing belief that America was indifferent to Cuban aspirations for a decent life."[47]_
Yeah, USA was always an innocent bystander on south america politics and economics. You are such a good, nice and selfless guys!

The Cuban people fought with courage waiting and praying for the US to help them. You do not support the Cuban people if you support the Dictatorship that is the Cuban government. No, this channel DEFINITELY has a bias. I'm certainly not saying that they're bad; as a matter of fact, I love their videos. And MOST of them aren't biased... except for the political ones like this. This one is discussing foreign policy of the U.S, and it is VERY left-leaning in how they present the facts. By the end of the video, they try to say that lifting the embargo is the best thing for both Cuba and the U.S, and that's the liberal/Democratic argument. Most conservatives believe that we need to keep the embargo in place because if we open up relations with Cuba again, the people of Cuba aren't going to get the money: the Cuban gov't is (because hello, communism). Also, I didn't like that they didn't discuss the human rights violations of the Cuban people, the way the government controls every aspect of the Cuban people's lives, and how they can legally only earn about 40 U.S. dollars a month.

The Philippines share a common history with Cuba on how they fought against the colonial power of the Spanish Empire during the last part of the 19th century. In 1898, with the help of the Americans during the Spanish-American war, the Philippines gained its "independence" albeit with the auspices of the Americans. Dealing with "new colonialism" and eventually gaining self-governance are the struggles that the Philippines and Cuba share. It's just interesting to note the paths that different ideologies made for their respective destinies.

For one, Castro's communist leanings were unclear to US Policy Makers until he declared himself a communist in 1961, 4 years after the revolution. Castro's unclear association with Communism, and the fact that Cuban democratic unions and political parties initially cooperated with Castro's own M26 movement to overthrow Batista represent major points of contention in Cuban. Great video. I would have appreciated an explanation of the composition (politics, race, class) of the people who left Cuba and migrated to Florida in the 80s. That's important to the history.

I was born and raised in Cuba came during the Mariel boatlifts. I can tell you that would take a separate video. All I can tell you is the Castro regime only brought suffering poverty and oppression to my people.
