    I have a 2016 Veloster Turbo manual transmission with 16,000 miles now. I always here about the surging issue but have never had any issues with mine. The only problem that others talk about is the nervous rear end over big bumps. The fix for that is a rear sway bar from Pierce Motorsports. It is a night and day difference. Highly recommended.

      How has the car been after a few years? Im actually planning on getting the same exact spec as you are

    The reverse shift issue happens on most all M/T cars ( I've been driving over 45 years) Most all M/T's do NOT have a synchro on reverse. This the only gear on a constant mesh transmission where you are actually shifting gears when moving the shift lever. ( many drivers don't understand that all forward gears are ALWAYS meshed on modern synchromesh transmissions ). So the reversing gears may "buck" teeth depending on where they stopped when shut down. Best way is to get them moving by partially engaging another Forward gear -with slight rocking - then go quickly into reverse without wait. I've had over 35 manual trans cars over the years and this is typical. No worries! ps: the trans gear oil is like cold honey when it cold outside. Cant rush forward shifts until you get a few miles down the road.

  • @DiamondDave1209
    @DiamondDave1209 7 лет назад +15

    The surging is because of a small flap in the air box ,under the air filter. The flap has a magnet to keep close and probably prevent "critters" out. It is held in position with a clip. Remove clip and magnet and save. You may want to reinstall for warranty issue. Will fix the surging issue.

    I have a Rally and do not have the surging issue. I did put on an Injen SRI, but drove the car for a while and never noticed anything. I bought it new. Injen is cheap, but sounds pretty cool and probably as good as anything else out there. I have owned around 20 stick shift cars. They ALL have to sometimes be put in first gear before they go into reverse. I would call you a noob, but I'm an older guy that appreciates seeing younger guys that are willing to drive a stickshift! So many people want the auto and miss out on a real driving experience. My sister had a 240 back in the 90s and I drove it a bit. Compared with my Veloster it sucks, but that is also a 20+ year old car and back then there were zero upgrades for them. It was even limited to 110 MPH!

  • @l-Arm.of.God-l
    @l-Arm.of.God-l 7 лет назад +3

    The only time there is a surging issue is when you shift when it prompts you to (it literally puts you in a gas saving mode yes with the Manuel I have the 16 turbo) if you want to take off just turn of traction and stability you will notice that the "surge" goes away.

    Fuel lines are known to collapse. Btr makes a nice replacement. Coilovers do a big difference on this car. Btr also has a tune you can receive in the mail that makes it even more fun to drive

    • @govnor1495
      @govnor1495 7 лет назад +1

      Did you do the tune? I am thinking about sinking some money into my Rally, but I am also thinking about trading it in for an STI. The Veloster is so much fun and I like it, but there is so much that needs to be done to it to make it right. I would probably have to spend around four grand, maybe five and never get that money back.

    • @albysure9119
      @albysure9119 7 лет назад

      Grumpyoldbastard , yes I got the btr tune and with basic bolt on's and meth(not tuned for meth) it bumped me up to 258hp and 298 torque...if I would get tuned for meth you could add another 40 on top of those numbers..there is a turbo upgrade also that will get you up or close to 400hp...I love the sti but I'll keep my veloster ... everyone has a Subaru..I'll have a video on my VT soon

    • @Dream21Chaser21
      @Dream21Chaser21 6 лет назад

      I work for SXTH element, you currently are at about max power for the stock turbo, if you intend on going higher you will need to do a turbo upgrade. The stock turbo (before meth) maxes out around 250 after meth is about 260-270. We sell a "stuffed" turbo kit as well, if you have questions let me know!

  • @DJSt3rling
    @DJSt3rling 7 лет назад +4

    Great review! I've driven A LOT of turbo cars, and I've experienced the touchy throttle - if you're in an awkward throttle position the car may bounce back/forward. Even Ferrari's and Bimmers have similar issues with the butterfly valve fluttering. The fix is to simply up-shift and continue accelerating.

  • @seal010101
    @seal010101 7 лет назад +1

    I have that same surge problem! Mine is a 2016 Veloster Turbo with a 6-speed manual. I watched the video about propping open the intake door. I haven't noticed a difference. I hope an intake will fix it at some point. The only rattle I have is bass-induced on the driver door. Cheers!

  • @jonathanmcauliffe784
    @jonathanmcauliffe784 7 лет назад +2

    Think the reverse gear locking is a safety feature to keep you from accidently putting it into reverse while cruising at highway speed, for example. That would be terrible for the car so it locks until it knows it's going slow enough where it wouldn't destroy the transmission. My Subaru Outback does the same thing and it's a 2007.

  • @anicetjoy5456

  • @ignatiusdrake9467
    @ignatiusdrake9467 3 года назад +2

    i think the surging problem is literally just caused by a magnet on a hatch underneath the stock air filter

  • @stevesk8r
    @stevesk8r 4 года назад +2

    Just got a 2016 turbo and have none of these problems, possibly because it was a hyundai certified? Awesome car though, cruises at high speeds like a spaceship

  • @cradford875
    @cradford875 7 лет назад +2

    The interior front door panel noises are annoying. Mine is on the driver side and happens randomly. Cannot pinpoint why this happens.
    The flap in the stock air intake box can be quickly adjusted by taking the little magnet off the flap. I seen this in a few RUclips videos.
    Adding the CAI (I did a K&N) does provide a little more performance, but not as much as I was hoping like on my other cars. It does make the louder suction sound and not sure if it's worth it.
    Adding the additional Pierce Motorsports supports made the car handle way better. I suggest adding the follow: Rear Torsion Bar, Upper Rear Chassis Brace, Point Front Tiebar Brace and VT-ONE Chromoly Strut brace.
    Thanks for great video, its a true review of the car.

    Just got a 2016 VT MT Tech 3 weeks ago as a replacement for a 2016 NAV Auto due to a trans issue, hyundai bought it back, wasnt wanting orange trim and was hoping for the Silver trim, but the last Tech package 2016 they could find was in SC and Orange, Very happy with it and the trim even more so, 700 miles in and so much better! seems the VT's get a better one over as even though I had the same options in my NAV as in the TECH VT, everything just seems... Better and less cheap! Over all I love this little car!

    Got a 2015 Black Turbo mine has annolog guages got nearly 32,000 on it . Auto no surges? Put foot down in drive goes put in sports mode REALLY goes smooth as silk Thank God. Mine had some ripple effect on bottom of driver/ passenger door but not rear door? Looked dented but was smooth . Thought I could live with it but bugged me too much in the sun SO Hyundai fixed it under warranty. Aslo had the a/c knob replaced ( some settings worked others didn't) . A passenger interior light wouldn't switch on and 3 rear hatch release switches I'm on now ( apparently the new 3rd one is a re- designed part. I've put Hids in the low beam headlights because the factory high beams are great but low beams were shit! Also replaced the stupid round red rear reflectors with brake/ running lights. I have a K+N air filter that sits in the standard air box and run Mobile 1 0-30 fully synthetic and change it every 8,000 miles. I also painted the front / side body runners /wheels and inside the areas where the fog lights and rear reflector/ now lights sit.Ive always been a VW man me and my friend are American ( military kids) ended up growing up in England both in America now. The reason I tell you this is he came over 2 years before me in around 2011 bought a VW Gti and said it's shit!! Definitely not the same build quality as a European one? Made in Mexico? Anyway my brother had a 2011/12 Nav Vitamin C and I liked the looks . Forward to me buying my Black Turbo around November 2014 and he's like shit this thing's way faster then mine. So I'd say to anyone wanting more BHP top speed buy a turbo with 201 BHP. Now I know the new one the N out now has 275 but they changed the body style too much for my liking. I'll stick with my older body style. After like 5 years this little car still gets looks and surprise's much bigger/ powerful cars as I fly by them!🤔😂😎

    I don't have any surging with my M/T Veloster turbo, you probably have a bad fuel line/pump. The not being able to shift into first/reverse only happens to me once every month or two, and it's a 2 second annoyance. Hardly worth needing a warning.

    I'm wondering did Hyundai fix the transmission/duel clutch issue, because I use to have a non turbo 2012 Volaster and when I was driving it in the middle of winter it was about 10 degrees outside, but one morning I shifted the car into drive, but the transmission was stalling in gear like it was stuck in neutral, this happend a couple times not just once. I'm just wondering cause I'm helping a coworker find a newer car I was thinking if he should try a 2015 Volaster Turbo, I just hope it doesn't have the same transmission/duel clutch problem like my did.

    Unplug the white connector near the clutch pedal (there are two). Look it up on the regular (non turbo 'veloster.org' site).
    I owned a 2012 normally aspirated Veloster (now have a Turbo R-Spec) and it was also an issue. The only drawback is that by unplugging the correct connector, it disconnects the Cruise Control functionality. I don't mind because I rarely use Cruise Control anyways. Apparently it was a fuel saving setting from takeoff.. Peace!

    I just read about the surging problem on the Veloster Turbos. Take the air filter out of filter box. There is a bypass small door under where the filter was. Take the little magnet that holds it shut off. Problem solved.
