Everything That's WRONG With My $1,500 Hyundai Veloster

- Now that the 2012 Hyundai Veloster is home it's time to try and diagnose the 1.6L 4 cylinder Gamma engine. It was listed with a broken rod or blown engine but the more I look into this car the less serious I think it is. The noise definitely sounds like it's coming from the top end and it runs so well that can't be down a cylinder. We stick a borescope down in the cylinders to inspect for damage and then compression test the engine. I'm holding out hope that it's something in the timing system, possibly one of the VVT sprockets or the timing chain tensioner. Either way it's time to tear this engine down and figure out what we're working with.

Hey i am a certified Hyundai service advisor and these engines are prone to engine failure. I would not advise to remove the head since it isn't necessary. 99% of the failure on these engine are rod bearings. I would first drain the oil and remove the oil pan and Boom! you will encounter excessive play in one of the rows. Hopefully this is helpful since i deal with these cars and techs on a daily. Good luck !
2.4's are the worst lol. I see shitloads of those that come out. Remove the valve cover and remove the the oil pain. Shimmering glitter lol
I believe its because there is a special low viscosity oil required for these engines and not alot of people understand this
@@jonathancolling2284 non turbo engines use 5w20 turbo engines. use 5w30. Nothing special.
These require 5w20 synthetic most of the time. Anyone who buys a Hyundai without a turbo want a cheap running car. With cheap buyers come a cheap lifestyle for the car. The results, people use conventional and synthetic blends on these causing premature wear.
Put a PA in for engine group and Hyundai will cover something...that’s what my dealership is like
My educational background says it's just low on blinker fluid.
Does O'Reillys sell that or did I hear wrong? 😛

I sense a bottom rebuild or engine swap for this car

Damn! I'm dying for the next video. Can't wait to see this thing run smoothly again!
Not without a new engine. Sounds like valve lifters, with combine piston slap and likely side walls of the cylinder bore are worn. Definitely not as simple as a timing chain as a rattle sound on this car.
Having owned one, it's incredibly underwhelming
@@midcenturymodern9330 I get it. I think they're getting kind of fun lately with the BMW engineers putting their hands all over the cars. Really nice driving dynamics and chassis refinement are present in their most recent cars. They used to be pretty bland and boring to drive. I like seeing the changes.
That's one unloved car for its age
Did you see the previous owner .....
😑
Doesn't matter. They are junk.
Previous owner was like..."Some car lot gave me a loan for this...it's cute..I am just going keep putting gas in it and drive it until doesn't run. In the meantime I will hit some curbs, lock my keys in it and hit some random stuff when I am too high to drive."
I am actually surprised it hasn't been keyed a few times.
She is in the other video, watch it and take your best guess.
@@Hughesburner My GF bought a cobalt, without meeting the previous owner (weird chain of events). But the interior was in worse shape than this one as far as filth, and the exterior had been keyed and a few small dents from being kicked. We had to find the previous owner for the paperwork, but judging by the contents of the interior, and the condition it was in, we pretty much knew exactly who we were going to find... It was essentially the same person that previously owned this veloster. Except she had a kid, so you can imagine how sticky the back seat area was.
Mechanically, and underneath the car was in really great shape, but we got a smoking deal on it due to the keyed paint and the filth. Easy fixes!
Buying a used car is about looking at the car AND judging the previous owner.
It was a girl's car and that explains everything
The issue seems to that someone secretly swapped in a 1983 Olds Diesel V8 and disguised it as a Hyundai 4-banger.
Anyway - looking forward to following this story.
I'm done with ice cars. No more leaks for me
Aren't these cars part of the huge Hyundai recall? Hyundai will replace the engine for free
Yup
I checked the vin on my 2012 Hyundai Veloster and there are no recalls 🤔
Nice for the money. I like the look of the ride. Hopefully it isn't too bad engine wise.
Curb the 4th wheel to match them all. LOL!!!

Love your videos I used to car flip but for dirt cheap fix it up some and sell it for a good price bought a 03 Grand Prix for 400$ heated wasn’t working turned out to be ignition switch causing it sold it for 1750 bought a 04 Nissan Maxima fully loaded for 750$ had sifting issue it was a 3.5 cvt sold it for 1900 keep up the amazing work!
You should start a series called the midnight mechanic as much as you work at night
That’s totally Rod knock
I wouldn’t bother tearing the top end down, I’ll bet a Canadian toonie it’s rodknock, those motors are poo and are known for spun bearings
Yeah, I think I can hear the metallic hitting on metal sound too. The 2013 model's were the ones with the rod knock issue. But hey, the engine didn't grenade I'd say its a pretty strong engine to go that long with the mechanical issues it has.
Yeah I was gonna say it sounds like a spin bearing cause that’s what happened to my car so ik how it sounds
it's common for gdi engines to build up carbon deposit at the intake valves and intake galleries creating a low compression reading.
Did he say Carona at 5:34 is this where the virus started? 😆

I work at Hyundai as a lube tech and I see these getting engine replacements on a weeekly basis good luck bro

Can’t wait for the next video, great car
Gabe with the jokes! Good stuff, excited to see this thing come apart!
Despite your words, I detected a bit of disappointment at the lack of curbing on that right front rim....
Ok, saw the thumbnail with a girl leaning against the car and reluctenly clicked. Very good vid from someone who knows what theyre doing. Love this car. 180k miliage and still going
You tha man jrgo
Worth checking the IAT sensor. I thought I had a blown motor once, turned out the sensor failed and was reading the air at -200 degrees
That car is just pure neglect by the old owner. Im sure she pocket the insurance money form the hail damage. Missed a bunch of oil changed too I bet.
Yep she didn’t take care of that car at all and she drove it like that for a while too, they said.
You're assuming it's a girl that was using all of that make-up.

Cliffhanger. Damn U Jr. Hurry up and rip that shit apart. I'm emotionally invested in figuring out what is making the veloster sound like a "Super Bass-O-Matic 2150"
Fix it wrap it sell it..Send it lol 😎
Looks like somebody pulled too far over a parking curb, hooked the front bumper and pulled a few clips when they backed out.
Agreed, the Accents are famous for that.
I bought I used car from a private seller I asked about the side of the front bumper driver side why it was all scratched up and there was some yellow paint on the red car like they swiped a pole or something. Guy said oh how we got the car yes okay you telling me you had the car for 3 years and never fixed it plus it looked somewhat fresh to me like it just happened a week ago. I really didn’t care cause it’s not hard to fix but the guy was to embarrassed to tell me. You have to be careful people lie all the time when selling cars.
It really seems you are dealing with a timing chain as you said as you seem to have eliminated everything else which could be causing that noise (which really did sound like a piston or valve). Amazing you got the car that cheap with an issue relatively minor but a pain to fix.
I kind of zoned out for a second. Did you say you have to pull out like half the engine to get at the timing chain? By the way, I have incredible respect for your skill and what you do.
Looking at the number 2 and 4 piston and the lack of carbon It looks like a bad head gasket coolant leaking into the cylinder will clean out the carbon.
i think the same
When are we doing to get an updated Fleet video??
Fill it full of Marvel Mystery Oil and ship it.
He called in the big guns, dude with an adjustable wrench and linesman pliers in a holster, shit's getting pretty serious.
8:17 the lightning in the back was cool
Can’t wait to see what the timing chain looks like.
Sounds internal, good luck.
You have to thank your god for this treasure, in my country this car worth $8,000 with all the issues you mentioned
Love the video's. What's the best GDi fuel treatment.
I don't know if anyone else mentioned this yet or if you already know, (too many comments to read all) but there is a effective way to easily & cheaply repair the hundreds of hail dimple dents you have, but it is scary to some people though. It involves a Oxy-acetylene torch, a old washcloth or small bathtowel and a bucket of cold water. If you never did it before, I suggest getting a scrap panel & using the round end of a small ballpeen hammer to make some dimple dents of your own in your practice panel, then basically set up the torch with a long orange flame (not a short blue flame like your gonna cut metal) adjust it until the black soot swirlys go away, & then heat the metal around the dimple for a few seconds, then using the washcloth soaked in cold water, apply the cold washcloth directly over the dimple dent as soon as you pull the torch away. Practice first so you know how long you can hold the torch near the paint before it starts to blister. If done correctly, as soon as you apply the cold washcloth to the hot metal, you will hear the metal "POP" back to its pre hail damage position. Easy peasy! There are videos out there too on you tube if you want to see someone else doing it first. I've been doing it for years with excellent results!
Quick and dirty way to check for rod knock is unplug coils while its running if one of them makes the noise get better then you have a rod knocks on that cylinder
man, my old neighborhood (pre '15) had one of these. For the price, if you can save it, great.
It's here! VelosterFlip!!!
Just traded my 2013 nav for a 2016 turbo. I love the cars. I simply keep it under warranty and only use the dealer for service. They break it, they buy it 😉
Smart move ! I have a 15 turbo but do my own servicing. My brother had a 12/13 Nav vit C color and he had something ? Screw his motor up! Traded it with Hyundai for a SUV. They told him it wasn't his fault some kind of manufacturing issue.
My Dodge's 2.7 engine started making that noise last summer. It was the timing chain tensioner. Fixed that and the water pump and it sounds brand new. It has 226.000 miles. 217.000 when the tensioner got worn. Hopefully it's something simple for you and not a major issue.
#2 rod bearing, can hear it clack louder when the compression tester was on it. Way less common on the 1.6 vs the 2.0 or 2.4 but still not an un-common failure
I clicked for Amberghini :
She was shooting, I tried to get her in the video! 💯
A good candidate for a wrap go crazy and wrap with chrome.lets get some likes to make this happen
Looks like a beautiful sunset
I recommend Solution Finish for the plastic trim, much more effective and durable than other trim restorers.
What scope is that it looks like it has a pretty clear feed!
I'm a machinist and can 100% say rod knock. Tear the oil pan off and check #1 rod and main.
i dont get how people are hearing the engine run and not thinking rod knock. thats the ONLY thing it sounds like.
I would like to see you also work on an older hyundai tiburon 2.7l v6 6speed :D (Because I bought one, 2004 model) That would be a nice learning experience too! :)
So out of curiosity you willing bought a Tiburon ?....God speed sir. Nice to see that every oddball finds a loving home (I collect nissan R50s)
@@stevenveach6984 I don't know if the US model is somehow worse than the European Coupe , but I've only heard positive from owners
@@Arcifer they're not celebrated here in the US cause production was low and build quality lacking to comparable stablemates . kinda hard to get parts for just really oddball cars here
@@stevenveach6984 strange, while i know production was low, quality was not lacking, i have heard these are really damn reliable. Granted the 2.7 is a bored out 2.5 and it drinks more than it's fast but it makes up for it by surviving really high mileages. Also from what i understand the car uses a lot of other parts seen in far more common hyundais santa fe and sonata models etc.
About a month ago the engine on my 2012 veloster blew up lucky me there's a recall on the vehicle and I have a brand new engine free of charge thanks to Hyundai
what borescope are you using ? can you add a link to it please
Ours has a sunroof, really nice rims and top of the line window tint!
Timing tensioner or something has been starved of oil due the lack of oil changes, worse ways its piston slap and it’s worn the piston and bore
Great video, funny jokes!!!
Ayy hey dude
8:32, nice lightning strike in the far background.
omg clickbait much?? thought "everything wrong" included what was wrong with the engine. oh, and that thumbnail XD j/p JR can't wait for more!!
the noise you're hearing is probably the high pressure fuel pump. They are annoying loud especially once they get quite a few miles on them. Pretty easy to replace, just make sure you replace the cam follower too. This comment is 5 years late i know, but for anyone watching that's the sound you're likely hearing. Just keep up with your maintenance and don't treat it like a sports car and it'll keep chugging along.
You deserve 999,929 more subs
The motors are known for having bad wrist pins
thats upper chain slap. Broken chain guide.
Damn that's hard to discern. It does sound like something with the timing chain since it's not "internal sounding". Start there. I'd also pull the oil pan as well and check the connecting rods.
love the speed dents on the hood
I had a honda crv v-tech that would make the same sound. The engine had 2 timing chain tensioners and one of them broke causing the rattle sound.
I’m looking at one right now with a skip in the motor not sure if it’s worth buying or not
My guess is a broken timing chain guide/tensioner. The chain is slapping against the guide.
The girl that owned this car before must’ve ran that engine dry for that to happen.
Its obvious. Head that before on a 69 Catalina. The guides were bye bye. They all had that issue. Probably same for that car.
@@tails300 No, its a broken chain guide. Blame cheap ass plastic parts.
a google search would produce the problem in 30 seconds, those cars are infamous for having broken connecting rods...new engine!
Dude you gotta hurry up with the next video i cant wait
My 2013 GDI 1.6 is doing the same thing @85k. MPG is down to 20! (usually closer to 40.) I'd like to buy a lower mileage used engine and replace what I have, but I'd need someone to do the work. What's a fair labor price (since this engine is apparently easy to swap out)?
Frank Oros: Great question! Since these are supposed to have a decent warranty, I’d definitely push for them to do it as it’s not an uncommon thing. If that doesn’t work, take it to a reliable mechanic and begin negotiations. Cost is going to vary depending on where you are.
Watch in 1.75 speed!!!! Enjoy! And thank me later😉
1.25x
It's later, thank you
If you watch at 1.75 and can make it through spark plug scene without giggling or laughing ass off, please see your doctor!!!!

It might be the lifters, the valves or lack of lubrication because they didn't change the oil frequently enough.
Or worse..lack of lubrication from starting the engine and instantly driving away,; letting the engine rev to second gear, with little to no lubrication. Boys remember, 1 minute n pin it
Remember to warm up, your oil pump doesnt work night night shifts.
I had the same exact problem with my 2012 Hyundai veloster. Replace the timing Chain Didn't fix the problem My friend said that it has to be the rod bearings.
On video it sounds like an exhaust leak , but that’s on video ! I played it again and I do hear what maybe timing chain slap also !
Amber is very beautiful JR, you’re a pretty lucky guy. All good
More than her looks, she really seems cool as hell. She helps with his videos and participates/has interest in what he does. I wish my GF had even the slightest interest in my car hobby. So yes, I would agree that he is a very lucky guy. It is obvious that JR is a smart guy, so I am sure he knows just how important Amber is to the growth of his channel.
@@InFiD3ViL1 Man if your gf cant support your interest or get excited about it in any way. Move on. I did. One of the best decisions i ever made.
How do you curb a wheel so bad on the left side??
Parking ramps.
How many hail dents do you need before you drop the headliner and pound out the dents?
I have done a bit of PDR. The bridges break for me, so I made one out of a zinc bar and I use elevator bolts. I bought a kit with a slide hammer and it comes with black glue sticks that do not hold well or come off easily. Gorilla Glue makes hot glue sticks for sale in many places. That held very well for me, but it did not come off with acetone, denatured alcohol, or 91% isopropyl alcohol.
Project Farm compared hot glue and determined that Scotch makes an extra-strong hot glue that outperforms Gorilla Glue.
Just took my son's 2013 Elantra into the shop. He complained twice about an engine tick and they replaced his timing chain. Tick still there. I took it in and they stated that they would like to do a oil change with a Hyundai filter. I said if you think an oil change will fix that noise go ahead. The next day they called and said I need a new engine. It's covered under the 100,000 power train warranty. Drop the oil pan and see if you have metal in it. Probably piston slap.
Smokey/food smell definitely a good deliver guy owned this before you
That def sounds like a rod knock I am afraid to say..... But that wont really affect compression...
Been waiting for this :)
Had this noise before, one of the vvt broke cause the tech didnt use torque wrench during timing belt change. Thats a daihatsu engine tho.
Sounds like rod knock, to be honest, but hopefully it's not. I would try disconnecting injectors one by one see if any of them make the noise go away and if it does, drop the oil pan and check rod bearings.
Ah. Hyundai 2.4L. Our 2015 Hyundai Sonata had extreme oil burning problems. It didn’t have much more left when we traded it in, around 86k miles. That’s why I’ll never own another Hyundai, Toyota it is!
Oh snap I see what you doing got your girl in the thumbnail. So if the previous owner Tunes in she's saying step back.😆🚙🚙
Nah she's in the thumbnail so people who watch videos hoping for her to be in them are more likely to watch.
@@KE5WYD you are correct I was just trying to be funny poor attempt my bad .
I work at a hyundai dealer, those 1.6L are pretty good but it’s likely piston slap, just like the 1.8s 2.0s and 2.4s get
Caleb Smith Some 3.4s do that too
My guess are bad or very far out of adjustment lifters
This video makes me want a veloster...
Sounds similar to the VVT timing chain issue I had with my is350. Was only 76,000 miles and the new owner had to throw a new engine in
A Toyota engine failure at 76,000 miles, Scotty Kilmer denies this.
Uncle Joe I never thought I’d see the day either. Previous owner must have raced the shit out of it
And to do a 'real' compression test, you need the engine warmed up to normal running conditions. The engine is a completely different animal then.
It's a direct injection engine clean the valves and it's fine as long as it hasn't been permanently damaged from the carbon chunks!
Cracked exhaust or block?
Ive seen so many of these wrecked on the side of the road, i wouldnt put my girlfriend in one. Im gonna try to get mine an elantra gt.
What's going on with the jd crawler
You're about to see then engine build! 🚜
My bets are on an injector going bad. Those direct injection ones act like a diesel injector. They can make alot of noise when they fail.
