Using A SCREWDRIVER To Test For ROD KNOCK On The $1,500 Hyundai Veloster

  • Do you have a long screwdriver? That and a ratchet are the only tools you need to test an engine for rod knock or failure once the plugs are out. In the last 2012 Hyundai Veloster video it seemed like we might just get away with fixing a faulty timing chain tensioner on the 1.6L Gamma engine. About half the comments agreed that it's likely timing and it was a relatively common failure. The other half promised it was rod knock so I wanted to go back and check. Today we decide the cheap Veloster's future, pull the entire side of the engine off, or just swap the entire engine.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------
    Common Questions:
What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Fury, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make RUclips videos and work in enterprise data storage.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?
    Instagram: WatchJRGo
Facebook: WatchJRGo (or JRGo, FB hates my branding)
Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

To be fair, replacing an engine to get your 10mm 1/4 deep back is *entirely* reasonable and is precisely what I would do in that situation, too. It's the only logical choice.

If you wouldn't mind, once you get the old engine out, could you please open it up so that we can see exactly what happened inside the engine to cause this issue, I think that would be very interesting to see exactly what caused the engine failure and the resulting damage from it.

@@theadvocate4698 I agree totally! Not too many of us are actually able to tear an engine down so we don't get the opportunity to see what causes common engine-failures like this. I know I wouldn't feel comfortable breaking down an engine but it seems that JR can practically do this kind-of thing in his sleep and I know seeing the inside causes and results of a problem like this from the inside of the engine would be very fascinating and also help us to learn more about breaking an engine down and maybe even preventing this issue to begin with to boot.

I had to swap a couple over at the shop I worked at due to same issue and noise and was piston slap on two cylinders and the other bad wrist pin and rod, took piston out and was loosey-goosey. Did same trick pretty much just tap the top of the piston and turn over motor. I got lucky and found a good motor with only 5k miles on it for about $500 at local junk yard.

Jr, a better way to test or to confirm is to just disconnect injectors one by one. If knocking stops when you disconnect the injector, then that's very likely the cylinder with bad bearings. The screw driver method isn't always reliable. I had a car pass "screw driver test" but it was still knocking.

Was going to say “Is that an SVX in the background? Did you buy that one from your earlier video?” Then at the end you say “That’s a Hoovie hooptie and this is a Hoovykart” so guessing it’s Tyler’s SVX

Those might be coming QQH soon. In other words, Hyundai knows there's a problem with those engines and they will extend the warranty on them to past 100k miles. Just look at the YF sonata. Anyways, it might be worth a shot taking it in to the dealership. Hyundai might approve it

Sump off, chuck a set of big end bearings in and see how long it lasts. I did that to an old Toyota Corona and it didn’t die until the owner filled it with diesel.

Take some time and open up the old engine once you get it out. It would make for some great content.

Im a fan of the low mileage JDM imported used engines. They have around 50k on them and everyone I know including myself have had great luck with them and they weren't that expensive.

I've always been worried that this could damage the top of the piston. Am I rightfully concerned here, or am I worrying too much? Is there anything I could do to minimize the risk of damage here, like cutting the head off the driver and rounding the head into a nice smooth ball? Would love to hear what anyone out there has to say about this - thanks!

    • @WatchJRGo
      @WatchJRGo  4 года назад

You could, but pistons literally support millions of explosions. You don’t have to hit it hard either just a tap and you’ll feel it go down. Basically anything rigid that fits in the spark plug hole will work fine 🍻

My 2014 turbo somehow burned all the oil. Im 2000k away from oil change. I bought the car just over 1 year ago, changed the oil 4 times and it was fine. How did it burn ALL the oil. It was bone dry. I heard knocking. Pulled back home right away. Found out, put 3 L of oil in it. Started it and it still knocks bad......whats broken? Can i fix this myself or is the engine fucked?
