  • Today I'm looking at DuckTales! It's got an interesting history, from the creation of the Scrooge McDuck character, to a partnership between Disney and Capcom, similarities to Mega Man and changes made by Disney producers. Here's some history of the game along with my thoughts on how it plays.

That was the most thorough review I've seen of this game with a lot of stuff I wasn't aware of with the prototype version, very well done.
I was a fan of the Megaman games and never got around to playing this but I can definitely see a lot of similarities in the gameplay and would have enjoyed it. My favorite of the the Disney-Capcom games is Rescue Rangers, that is a really great game and it was especially fun in co-op.

  • @JMFSpike
    @JMFSpike 4 года назад +1

Holy crap, you went all out here with the history and development. Well done! I've had this one since I was very, very young, and I always loved it. I'm pretty sure this is almost everyone's favorite Capcom developed Disney game, although some would probably pick either Rescue Rangers or Aladdin instead.
I really wish Capcom would return to making Disney games, as they did such a fantastic job with them. Every Disney title they did after 1995 has not been anything new and original. There were 3 exceptions, but they were nothing major. Magical Tetris was just another version of Tetris with Disney characters thrown in, and although the 2 Gamecube games were original and very well done, they were clearly meant only for young children. It's crazy how much most of these kids games have been dumbed down since the NES, SNES, and even N64 days.

It's funny that you would mention the similarity in cute facial expressions between Scrooge McDuck and Mega Man as Osamu Tezuka, the creator of Astro Boy and therefore the father of anime (i.e. Mega Man), credited his art style as being inspired by Carl Barks' Scrooge McDuck.

Great video! Wang Film Productions was only one of the many international animation studios that contributed to the original DuckTales show. Probably the most prominent of them all was Japan based Tokyo Movie Shinsha (TMS Entertainment), best known for several Lupin the 3rd projects, Akira, Little Nemo and several episodes of American shows throughout the 80’s and 90’s like The Real Ghostbusters, New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Tiny Toon Adventures, Batman: the Animated Series and the original Animaniacs among many others. They animated most of the first 65 episode season while Wang Film mostly worked on the last two seasons.

When I was a child I played this game, and I was a huge fan of the Duck Tales animation. I never owned the game, or beat it, but appreciated it for what it was when I hired it from the video store (a relic of the past!) I particularly thought that the pogo function was a nice differentiation from other titles in the same field.

Ducktales is one of the best NES games ever released. The design and mechanics worked so well. Then when it comes to the soundtrack what can I say? Capcom is not a slouch when it comes to amazing soundtracks but to me this one they really knocked it put of the park. Moon especially is one people still know to this day as one of the best video game songs.
Capcom had a few great Disney titles with this, Chip & Dale’s Rescue Rangers and Aladdin for the SNES.

And my childhood looms yet again. ;-) Duck Tales was one of the few titles I owned on the NES back in the late '80, and despite loving the Mario franchise today, the only platformer I ever finished even with the extra end cutscene with all the extra secret treasures. And I played Super Mario Bros almost to death but I never could beat that last level (8-4) before losing all my lives. To be fair Duck Tales does not have that many levels but still... Never managed to beat it on hard either so I guess I am not that good. Still, it is a very good game. And the Moon Theme is one of my favorite game theme to this day! :-D

I agree about the Amazon level probably being the hardest, but it still makes some sense to put it first. It's the least complex of the levels, with only one point where you can really take a different route (apart from a secret one).
As for the best Capcom Disney game, probably this one. There are individual things that others do better, but as a package, I think DuckTales is the most fun. I think Rescue Rangers would have nabbed this spot, had it not been so easy that kid me could finish it in an evening. DuckTales at least ended up taking two :P
Also, pointless fact: In the Swedish translation, they renamed Scrooge McDuck to Joakim von Anka (Joakim von Duck), which would imply that he's from Germany, not Scotland.

I must say that my first impressions of the gameplay were bad for years. Never could advance significantly any stage and died again and again very soon because didn't know how to use the cane as a pogo effectively. And said that was a shame for a game based on one my favorite cartoons of all time. And ended playing any other game.
Then, someday, I could understand what I supposed to do and could reach the bosses at last. I was very happy!!!
Never have reached the end of the game, but changed my mind and now I know is a great NES game!!
By the way pretty and beautiful Pam ;-*, my favorite Disney-Capcom game is Darkwing Duck.

But I owned the Game Boy version as a kid, and loved it. I also loved the Remaster, when I bought it for Wii U. I don't remember where I read or heard it, but I vaguely remember something about the Mega Man engine that they tweaked for DuckTales was what they developed for Mega Man 2. Pretty obvious now, comparing the games, but as a kid, I didn't notice. I was just happy to play the game, since it was one of my favorite cartoons. I even remember watching the DuckTales movie where they introduced Gizmo Duck.

This is a game I wished I grew on. I didn’t play a lot of NES games in general. But I’ve been a huge fan of the Ducktales show. Scrooge McDuck is my favorite Disney character. I couldn’t wait for the remaster going in being aware how cherished the nes original is. I know some people complained the remaster being too cinematic, and being too nostalgia over the music being remade since it’s so held as the greatest piece of gaming music. But I appreciate it for what it aimed to do the way it expands the story, and being even more directly represented of the show. Awesome piece of history on this game too. Based on the remaster alone I had tremendous fun with this game. But I did get hands on the original game, and enjoyed it too. I wish the remaster would get a current gen port. And I wouldn’t mind more Disney Capcom remakes either. This game aside, I really enjoyed Goof Troop for SNES. Great review. I also really missed the era when Konami made amazing licensed WB games. Those were my jams.

I really liked the remaster, it brought the cartoon to life. I should play it again sometime.

I'm gonna have agree with the critics that said the fame was too short. I thought that as a kid, an hold true to that today.
Also, once you get the hang of the pogo jump, you find yourself doing it all the time for both fun and a sirt of defensive way to move around.
All in all, a classic NES gem. Cool vid.

It's not that much shorter than games like MegaMan in terms of length from start to finish, it's just easier so you get through it faster.

@@Cannotbetamed1 Mega Man did have the Dr Wily stages and boss rushes before the 2 fold final boss fights.
But youre right, Duck Tales was way easier to get through than any of the Mega Man games, even if you remove the Dr Wily stages. I still love Duck Tales though. It was fun, which ultimately is the most important factor of a game.

The sequel is my favourite, but I love all of the Disney Capcom games that I've played. For me, the difficulty was spot on as it was easy enough to pick up as a small child, but had enough secrets and such to keep you interested for a while.

Great video! My favourite was Duck tales 2. Played that to death. It had more replay value as well because it had 2 endings. One for normal playthrough and another "true ending" for it if you got all the pieces of the treasure map! Look forward to your next video.

Glad you gave it a second chance. I love this game and was one of the 16 games I had as a kid. My ranking of the 16 or so games I had as a kid was Super Mario Bros 3, the first Zelda, and GI Joe the real american hero were my top 3 picks. I give duck tales as my 4th or 5th favorite games as a kid growing up. I also like the other Mario games and a great 2 player coop game is Cabal but its only great when two people play it together your be able to make it in the game much further.

Ah, Capcom at their finest. This was fantastic, Pam. I especially liked the history you included on Scrooge McDuck and the insight on the development of the game and the really interesting prototype. I love this game and it’s definitely my favorite Capcom Disney game on the NES. Again, this was wonderful. Keep them coming.

Oh man. I didn't realize that Ducktales was that closely related to Mega Man. I should have known. Great info!

Thanks again Pam for another well done video. You should do a live stream of you playing a game. Maybe.... Quakshots for the Sega Genesis.

Not much people talks about Ducktales 2, maybe because the cartridge is very expensive. Ghost Ship level has the best music on that game

    Nice review Pam :D
One of my favorite games from my childhood, I remember playing this for the first time in a modified NES to arcade machine, when you needed to deposit coins every time the game paused, years later I got it in the famiclone, finally I bought the remastered version some years ago, before it disappeared from virtual stores. Such great memories :)
