Well, if you wanted to fight a Defender with a Panda, you should have used the Panda 4X4 1st gen. It was a real compact off-road, undestructible and reliable. If someone says that Fiats are unreliable, that's because he never had one.
Some Fiat's were terribly unreliable and rusted from day 1 . Once i was in Sicily and rented a second generation Panda and i immediately fell in love with one . Some 3 years ago i bought a second hand one which i sold a year later as i then got a company car . Fast forward to last June , had to change job , had no company car any more and bought another Panda . Both have been extremely reliable and the most great thing in all is that it's extremely fun to drive .
Its true. Our fiat panda never had any huge issues aside from coroded oil tank and exhaust (but you simply switch them to a non corrosion version and never have problems again). But apart from that we never had problems. I see other cars having problems constantly, having to go to the garage all the time - but not our little panda. No problems for over 180.000km now.

We’ve had Landrovers for 10 years in our family and love them, but the Fiat did incredibly well! Low weight is definitely a bonus when offroading. It should be mentioned, that most defenders are modified and fitted with full locks all around if they go offroading frequently. The car in the video lacked these as could be seen by the two (or one?) tire fire, and this makes all the difference. Still, it’s great to see that big things also come in small packages. Both cars have their benefits, and unlike 90% of “suv’s” these days, the fiat proves some of them are actually off road worthy - even bone stock! Good job fiat!
Hmm! ; ( at 4:52 it is easy to make out that the defender is moving over a much deeper slush, whereas the panda is moving over something which can be tackled easily by any 4x4 ! I'm saying this since I'm both a car enthusiast and an offroad driver ! I originate from the himalayas in a small himalayan town named darjeeling ,which was a colony of britishers during colonisation ! After the colonials gave up rulling ,still many britishers lived here as they owned many tea plantations and many of them even imported land rover series 3 and defenders in india ! Right now my uncle owns one of it ! and I own a land cruiser 70 series and a dodge viper ACR here in gothenberg sweden ! From my experience that only old school 4x4s with front and rear solid axles are considered to be the best ! And no way the panda can beat that big tough guy in offroad business since the land rover defender has more low end torque and a balanced weight so that it can get grip plus it can even sail over soft soil ! I had to spit out this comment because even as a car guy , I fell really sad that many old school offroaders are getting expired and are being replaced by crap crossovers ! So let us car guys unite with offroad enthusiast so that we can fight against crossover owners ! Since car guys hate crossovers ! Even many cool cars like the eclipse are now in the form opf a crossover ! And the original jeep cherokee Xj which was a real crossover back then during the 85s are now turning out to be crap crossovers ! Please support and forgive me about my english ! I can only speak in swedish ,currently !
I remember years ago reading an article, possibly in Custom Car magazine, on a factory 4x4 transit van. They may still make them, I'm not sure. They were going along a green lane and a farmer exclaimed that they should turn back as the track got quite steep and rough and they don't even take their Land Rover up. Apparently it was a nice view up the top! Sometimes even the best has an off day! Dare I say this incarnation of the Panda looks ok and a great fun car to drive!
I expected the Panda to win. I like Defenders… and the defender will probably outlast the Panda, but light 4X4 vehicles get through almost anything, they just don’t sink in the mud.
3:50 "The big dog won" because the driver decided to get fancy and tried to go up a slope that he simply drove around in the defender. Honestly looked like a set-up, and even then, he would have probably crested the slope fine with a bit of throttle control, instead of flooring it as he was losing grip.
Simone Girotto sono inglesi, pensano di fare le auto migliori e di avere la storia automobilistica migliore di tutti gli altri quando invece sono gli unici a non avere nessuno dei due
+kd1s Americans would never go for a little euro Liberal like the Panda. The reason small cars are popular in Europe is because governments tax the hell out of European cars. A Jeep Renegade costs about 18,000 dollars.
the panda did really well and i was impressed with its performance. that said, i am a defender 110 owner and have done a lot of off roading. i was very surprised to see the landie stuck there as i have been through much worse, as have most off roaders. the tyre types / pressures may have been an issue, or it may simply have been too little momentum approaching the boggy bit. i certainly wouldnt judge either vehicles relative performance from that snippet of film, other than as i said being pleasantly surprised with the panda, but also bare in mind the landie is designed to hoof round heavy loads in those conditions all day, every day... stuff the panda simply couldnt do. there is a very good reason why the defender design dates back to 1948, it works and its simple to modify and work on... two issues that pose a problem for a car mfr looking to sell replacement vehicles every few years.
So the defender gets stuck in the mud okay we can all see that. But the mud is near the centre of the hubs on the defender yet the mud the panda went through was just touching the bottom of the rim so not overly fair. Secondly they are using a much older generation defender without the traction control which acts as a locked differential. Thirdly the guy driving the defender trains people off-road? Well he clearly doesn't teach ground reading skills because he clearly put the defender in more difficult situations. If you want to see which one is best tie them together and see which one pulls the other one through the slippery stuff.
agree, the " off road " instructor doesnt impress in this at all. i guess the vast majority of his work comes from people who have never been off road and need a bit of a confidence boost and the basics of the hi / lo box and diff lock. if you want to avoid the wheel spin, in an older land rover without traction control, before you get bogged down, low range first or second, depending on incline, very light pressure on the brake whilst still maintaining forward momentum (ie foot on gas and lightly brake together) stops the slipping wheel from stealing all the power. it does take a bit of practice to get it right, but there isnt much that it wont get through, even on the standard tyres. If you want better still, adjust the tyre pressures to the conditions and choose more suitable A/T or mud terrain tyres
Exactly what I meant ,most of the commenters no nothing about off-road,but are non car guy Eco bullock fans! Iam telling it as a fan of both race cars and off-road trucks!
The Fiat is perfect for someone who wants to be off road with no hassle fun. I've no doubt it's a good little car. The defender is a mechanics dream 4x4. Definitely for someone like myself who likes to get there hands dirty. Who cares who's better just drive what makes you happy.
I own 3 4x4:s , -79 Blazer, -94 Grand Cherokee and -07 H 3 . If just going to the worst possible terrain, Blazer with it's modifications has pulled Land Rovers to safety, it just beats them hands down. Grand Cherokee is the Winter King with it's Subaru'ish handling. The Hummer is "too new" to risk too much, but it is in reality possibly the best 4x4 there is. I have been offroading for 30 years now, and here in Finland, you need something that gets you out of the woods, Toyota would be the most reliable, but having participated to numerous "safaris", I'm sorry to say that Land Rovers and Range Rovers are just too brittle and unreliable. We used to say that you can spot one of their owners by looking for a man that walks in the woods, and possibly has a borrowed drive axle part on his shoulder... So The older test, Panda would have won without the obvious intentional drivers error. Now the Panda just "won". The terrain was this time chosen to favor the panda, and if arranged differently, LR would have won easily towing the remains of that Italian toy to the wrecking yard. I too miss Top Gear...
I have a Panda Sisley built in 1989 with 45 hp.. It is better than my friend's 90.000€ Range Rover and it is much more beautiful. The best System ist the old Steyr Puch System. My car's weight is 750 kilos...
+Vizcaio These roads are very smooth and well prepared. In the real world off roading, you can found deep grooves when the Panda hit the ground, when a veichle with higher clearance from ground can proceed correctly. The Panda front bumper is very fragile, in this well prepared track, it never touch the ground.
does anyone know whether when its in offroad mode the centre diff actually locks or is it like those haldex systems that use a clutch or something which overheats or is there a max speed limit you can have it in 4wd/offroad- mode
Ok the Defender would win in most scenarios but the Panda punches way above it's weight . Dead cheap to run little car that's great fun to drive almost anywhere you'd like to go 🙂 (I'm on my third 👍)
Great Panda 4x4. The best little offroad. 35 years of story. La panda è un capolavoro di tecnologia, io ho avuto la prima versione, poi la 4x4 Sisley e adesso la Mitica Traking (ovviamente modificata) Panda 4x4 UN MITO.
Very nice video. It clearly shows the benefits of Fiat Panda. By the way, i own the CNG version, and i'm very satisfied. If only the 4x4 version was available with CNG. I would trade with mine, at once.
I love the original panda 4x4 and the new one but the defender is a legend and it's still being used as a bench mark, surely we can make stuff beat it now. Defenders are one of those cars that everyone can like and even tho they wear you out you'll never care cos they are what they are and they are mega and yeah I'll defender
+Vinsu Karma not the point I was making, but If your trying to say any Suzuki is a better off roader than a defender then you really have limited knowledge of the 4x4 world.
The Defender’s weight was its downfall? Or maybe because he drove straight into pre-driven deep, wet ruts and the Fiat went over fresh, untrodden ground...
Panda cross mini suv segment A 4x4 win defender and is more cheaper than anothers 4x4 Fiat is small ,small neumatics perfil is better for snow and barro and big 4x4 is better to pas dificults roads, rivers, big rocks, cruce badens use reductora transmition! suvs not have reductora!
"The Defender's extra 700 Kilos of weight had been its downfall"... well that and the strange choice of road biased tyres. Very impressed with the capabilities of the plucky little Fiat but did they have to handicap the Land rover?
Well its hardly a fair test... Lets pit a new Panda with all the electronic gizmo's anyone could ask for against a good old work dog that can tow well in excess of 3.5t all day long and still do well in off-road conditions with out any electronic aid. For the boggy section, the Panda attacks it with way more speed where as the Defender goes in, not looking like its in low range and gets stuck. Surprise? I think not...
Admiral_Awesome Yes, that's point I was trying to make, but never actually said it. If it was done properly the defender would've won hands down, but they wanted to show that the Fiat can be better than the defender.
+Meteor Shower The thing is, the Panda has a greater money/value factor. Also, it's a vehicle well suited for narrow mountain roads, places where that defender wouldn't even fit.
+DerpEye Not to mention that the Panda its more confortable car, have more gadgets, can park anymore and ect, and ect. Unless we compered to the brand new vehicles from Range Rover, in witch case would be a hell of a lot more expensive.

It's called television. Telly people will do what it takes to get a story, and they usually know what the story i is to be before the facts intervene
Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, short wheel-base version and with mud-terrain tyres, but then again, about twice the price!
Hmm! ; ( at 4:52 it is easy to make out that the defender is moving over a much deeper slush, whereas the panda is moving over something which can be tackled easily by any 4x4 !
I like Panda!
Well done Panda!!
panda panda panda panda. I got broads in Atlanta.
+shoryukenpower choosing to be in the phantom
+shoryukenpower white X6 looks like a panda
hope u killers understand
I was gone say that
Nice small crossover
I expected the Panda to win. I like Defenders… and the defender will probably outlast the Panda, but light 4X4 vehicles get through almost anything, they just don’t sink in the mud.
Mine has 325.000 on the gauge, and is still going strong (on LPG).
Love this Panda
3:50 "The big dog won" because the driver decided to get fancy and tried to go up a slope that he simply drove around in the defender. Honestly looked like a set-up, and even then, he would have probably crested the slope fine with a bit of throttle control, instead of flooring it as he was losing grip.
Simone Girotto malto benne Grande panda
Alocin ma guarda che il defender va meglio della panda
Davide Latini beh oddio,di storia automobilistica ne hanno eccome, hanno fatto auto fantastiche
The best car in the world, Fiat Panda
I thought extra 700kg of Driver would do badly as well.
The panda already won the competition before starting. When after turning the ignition switch, the engine should have started.
Gotta wonder why FIAT doesn't sell the Panda Cross in the U.S. We get the 500 and the 124 Spider. And FIAT pretty much owns Chrysler.
+kd1s americans won't buy it, because it is too small for what the american customer is used to.
+TheZoidberg I get to differ. Need I mention the old Suzuki 4x4, and a number of smaller 4x4's that sold here in the U.S.
+kd1s
Americans would never go for a little euro Liberal like the Panda. The reason small cars are popular in Europe is because governments tax the hell out of European cars.
A Jeep Renegade costs about 18,000 dollars.
A renegade in slovenia starts from 24 000€, that being 29 000 $
kd1s Because Sergio Minchionne is an idiot. He ruined Lancia
the panda did really well and i was impressed with its performance. that said, i am a defender 110 owner and have done a lot of off roading. i was very surprised to see the landie stuck there as i have been through much worse, as have most off roaders. the tyre types / pressures may have been an issue, or it may simply have been too little momentum approaching the boggy bit.
i certainly wouldnt judge either vehicles relative performance from that snippet of film, other than as i said being pleasantly surprised with the panda, but also bare in mind the landie is designed to hoof round heavy loads in those conditions all day, every day... stuff the panda simply couldnt do.
there is a very good reason why the defender design dates back to 1948, it works and its simple to modify and work on... two issues that pose a problem for a car mfr looking to sell replacement vehicles every few years.
Check the video at 5:09. The Defender has road tyres, but was shown with all terrain tyres at the beginning of the 'race'
@@DefenderRocks good spot!
agree, the " off road " instructor doesnt impress in this at all. i guess the vast majority of his work comes from people who have never been off road and need a bit of a confidence boost and the basics of the hi / lo box and diff lock.
if you want to avoid the wheel spin, in an older land rover without traction control, before you get bogged down, low range first or second, depending on incline, very light pressure on the brake whilst still maintaining forward momentum (ie foot on gas and lightly brake together) stops the slipping wheel from stealing all the power.
it does take a bit of practice to get it right, but there isnt much that it wont get through, even on the standard tyres.
I have driven my series 3 through deeper slushes without a diff lock and it didn't get stuck!
did anybody notice another panda on the background in 2:11? did Tiff change car midway?
+Viirrvill look at the license plate dumbass
okay chill out! i was just curious what that another car was doing there
Viirrvill It wasn't even a panda. you're a panda
and you are troll aren't you?
Also the defender was being driven through the deeper slush!
The panda couldn't though as there was a defender in the way
The Fiat is perfect for someone who wants to be off road with no hassle fun. I've no doubt it's a good little car. The defender is a mechanics dream 4x4. Definitely for someone like myself who likes to get there hands dirty. Who cares who's better just drive what makes you happy.
I need that car!
A panda will bring you anywhere. Ask italian granpas and farmers 😄
I have a Panda Sisley built in 1989 with 45 hp.. It is better than my friend's 90.000€ Range Rover and it is much more beautiful. The best System ist the old Steyr Puch System. My car's weight is 750 kilos...
where is the off road in this video?
+iw1gfv are they on a road?!?! then they must be off... no?!?!
+Vizcaio
These roads are very smooth and well prepared.
In the real world off roading, you can found deep grooves when the Panda hit the ground, when a veichle with higher clearance from ground can proceed correctly.
The Panda front bumper is very fragile, in this well prepared track, it never touch the ground.
offroad is such a broad concept....!!! ground clearance is just part of the equation....
Watched it twice ......still can't see any tarmac ,might have to go to spec savers !
The part where the Panda drives around the Defender
where is this off road site ??
its the brand that makes $$$
does anyone know whether when its in offroad mode the centre diff actually locks or is it like those haldex systems that use a clutch or something which overheats or is there a max speed limit you can have it in 4wd/offroad- mode
Panda is the best!!!!!!!
Note the way the defender aimed for the deeper wetter track?
Great panda Cross!!!
Micro Venom car!!!!!
Ok the Defender would win in most scenarios but the Panda punches way above it's weight .
Dead cheap to run little car that's great fun to drive almost anywhere you'd like to go 🙂
(I'm on my third 👍)
Nice car Panda 10+
BRING TIFF BACK with a FULL APOLOGY, FIFTH GEAR!
Also, poor line choice lmao! You can see the difference in the depth of the ruts and wetness.
Great Panda 4x4. The best little offroad. 35 years of story.
Excellentissime Panda depuis 30 ans.
Come on come on panda
Very nice video. It clearly shows the benefits of Fiat Panda. By the way, i own the CNG version, and i'm very satisfied. If only the 4x4 version was available with CNG. I would trade with mine, at once.
Land rovers a for men that like fixing things more than driving things 😂😂😂😂
@@sherpafan033 yes hairdresser that want to get there 😂😂😂
The defender has slicks at 5:09....
Don't Cheet LAND ROVER DEFENDER ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
I love the original panda 4x4 and the new one but the defender is a legend and it's still being used as a bench mark, surely we can make stuff beat it now.
Defenders are one of those cars that everyone can like and even tho they wear you out you'll never care cos they are what they are and they are mega and yeah I'll defender
Fifth gear now sponsored by Fiat
+MrTaftser Its not the first time I see a defender bitting the dust, too much weight, even a suzuki samurai can beat it.
+Vinsu Karma not the point I was making, but If your trying to say any Suzuki is a better off roader than a defender then you really have limited knowledge of the 4x4 world.
MrTaftser
why? just find out
+Vinsu Karma thanks for the reply
They also showed how good a car the Dacia Duster was too, proved correct on that one too,!
The Defender’s weight was its downfall? Or maybe because he drove straight into pre-driven deep, wet ruts and the Fiat went over fresh, untrodden ground...
Panda cross mini suv segment A 4x4 win defender and is more cheaper than anothers 4x4
Fiat is small ,small neumatics perfil is better for snow and barro and big 4x4 is better to pas dificults roads, rivers, big rocks, cruce badens use reductora transmition! suvs not have reductora!
Land Rover Defender is the ultimate champion..
Bravo Panda!
"The Defender's extra 700 Kilos of weight had been its downfall"... well that and the strange choice of road biased tyres. Very impressed with the capabilities of the plucky little Fiat but did they have to handicap the Land rover?
well, the panda's tyres aren't very "offroady" either. i believe they just used oem tyres on both
Unbeatable Panda ridicules Land Rover.
Might sound like a weird question but does the plastics on the car what the word panda etched into it?
Well its hardly a fair test... Lets pit a new Panda with all the electronic gizmo's anyone could ask for against a good old work dog that can tow well in excess of 3.5t all day long and still do well in off-road conditions with out any electronic aid. For the boggy section, the Panda attacks it with way more speed where as the Defender goes in, not looking like its in low range and gets stuck. Surprise? I think not...
+Meteor Shower it was compensated by the off road instructors ability. The Defender is a really capable machine in the right hands
TheRedHuskie Well the new discovery would probably be the best comparable vehicle. But also you wouldn't buy a defender fr the comfort etc.
If the Defender wants to beat the Panda, all it needs is 700mm of water!
