  • What’s up guys!? Here’s my issues that I have with the new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness! Overall it’s a good vehicle, and a better value than many other vehicles (being a Subaru) but I don’t think it’s the best value Wilderness. If it’s what you like, that’s all that matters!

    The 4mpg hit is due to the 4.11 final drive ratio, tires, and lift. Gearing matters, I can’t believe that you review cars and don’t understand, or fail to mention ALL the variables. The final drive ratio change is a big part of why it’s good off road, climbing in particular.

    • @matthewjohnson1211
      @matthewjohnson1211 11 месяцев назад +8

      Well said…and if a person was really going to be using this off road -the 4.11 gear ratio is probably the biggest advantage over a regular Crosstrek.

    • @AutomotiveAnonymous208
      @AutomotiveAnonymous208  11 месяцев назад +11

      That’s a good point! The regular crosstrek is a 3.90 final, so the Wilderness is roughly 5% more aggressive. The overall decrease in highway efficiency is roughly 13% (so the final drive ratio maybe accounts for 2-3% of that? But it’s not linear to mpg loss). With 8 “gears” usually the highest gears can compensate fairly well for a more aggressive final drive ratio. Hence why some of these 8-10 speed cars are so fast. Very aggressive acceleration in low gears and very economical in the high gears. I should have mentioned the gearing, but for the purpose of my rant I over looked it in keeping the video short and boiled down. And it’s not like the regular crosstrek has a wimpy final drive ratio of like a 2.73 or 3.23 like a GM, lol. Thank you for mentioning this, I hope those watching find your comment! 🙂

    I love the Crosstrek Wilderness ! My preference over a Forester is :
    1 ease of loading kayak/ bike on roof
    2 3500 pound towing over Forester 3000
    3 11.6 “ infotainment is modern integrated and responsive. Yesit takes time to learn how to navigate but wow I love it ! Easily toggle between screens
    4 curb appeal.
    5 fits in my garage better
    6 deals with the narrow snow trails better

    The reason why the Wilderness Subie’s get Worse mpg is because the final rear differential has 4.11 gears, whereas the other models have higher rear differential gears.
    My Ranger has 3.55 gears in the rear differential, but if I put in a 3.73 or a 4.11, I’d get Less fuel economy.
    With the lower gears you’ll have more torque, but you’ll suffer on your mpg.
    It’s a numbers game, baby

    We have a 24 CT Sport and a 24 CT Wilderness. If you are only a road tripper get the Sport. If you have any plans on doing anything other than the regular fire roads then go Wilderness and get that small stock lift covered under warranty and a lot more towing capacity due to the cvt cooler and torque. Both are fantastic choices so you can't go wrong with either. The black body panels look better in person and depending on what color trim you go with look better than videos and photos. I have a lithium red and it's awesome. The white model with the black panels is a bit much IMO but the Sport in white rocks.

    The only advantage of the Forester is the size. The engine is the same as what is in the Crosstrek, and the current Forester has older tech on the inside. I do think the extra cladding and excessive gold trim on the wilderness are ridiculous. They should have just taken the Crosstrek Sport, lifted it an extra inch or 2, changed the wheels/tires, and added all-weather floor mats, sill protectors, mud flaps, and bumper protector, to go along with the increase towing capacity.

    Depending on the plastic, I think it's better than metal for off-road. There is a reason car bumpers are filled with polymer and not metal. To know if the polymer on the side of the Crosstrek was able to absorb damage or impact, I'd have to know what type and most reviewers (including you) don't seem to know the difference in a polymer and plastic or why it may be useful.

    Put all-terrain tires on the Crosstrek Sport, and you have something that is just about as capable with better gas mileage. Put all-terrain tires on a Forester Premium, and you have a considerably better vehicle that might be more capable off-road and probably gets better gas mileage.

    I do like the look of this vehicle despite all the clotting. However, The price is the overriding factor for me. At that price one could get a much more comfortable and roadworthy vehicle from Subaru such as the Forester or outback even in some higher trims I believe it would be worth it over the Crosstrek wilderness. I think they potentially have a hit on their hand until shoppers look at the window sticker. However, Mazda isn't giving away their CX30 nor is Honda giving away their small SUV just like the rest of them. For some reason, this seems much more egregious in terms of the cost.

    You made some really good points given the price point of this vehicle.
    But there were a few points I'm gunna disagree with/point out.
    1. Commenters already mentioned the mileage, given it's lifted, AT tires, different ratios and the front bumper not being as aero as a standard CT, all of those things combined can definitely hinder the mileage as much as they show.
    2. The manual transmission. It's not offered cause no one bought it. No one looking for a manual is looking for a CT haha. Makes total sense for them to drop that option.
    3. Heated steering wheel is standard in Canada for all Wilderness models! Pointing this out for any Canadian viewers.
    4. Don't forget about the transmission cooler which is specific to Wilderness models. Helps the value proposition....but only a little.
    Overall though the CT Wilderness is a really hard sell for the price point when the Forester Wilderness is not much more expensive and offers a better infotainment (also not a fan of the tablet), full sized spare, is safer, has a front camera, power lift gate, gets about the same mileage and looks better (IMO).
    Great video on being critical nonetheless!

    My issues after 1K miles with my 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness:
    1) my biggest peeve is that the front passenger door panel vibrates and buzzes with the $2270 Harmon Kardon audio system. I find it unacceptable and my dealer did nothing to fix it staying it is operating normally. The system feels like it was a $2270 waste of money because of it. They should have put a small dedicated sub in the hatch or under the seat to prevent that.
    2) there is no steering wheel warmer. Absurd considering this is built for winter climates like mine. The Canadian model has that standard. Why not the US model?
    3) there is no 12v outlet in the hatch - really???? Why???
    4) backup camera quality is abysmal at best. Looks like it is a very low resolution with a very low refresh rate.
    5) at $2270, the only option package should include Navigation, which would display the speed limit in the gauge cluster.
    6) no place to put an ez-pass without being an eye sore because of the eyesight system.
    It is a very comfortable car, rides well, easy to park, gets decently ok-ish fuel economy. My average for the first 1K miles is 25.8 mpg which has a lot of city and traffic jams mixed in that. My dealership experience was pretty lousy in so far as the accessories were installed wrong and had to be reinstalled and also they had to send to a detailer because they scratches/swirled the whole car up when they “”washed”” it to install the rear bumper cover guard accessory.

    This guy is totally uncool literally. Number one the Forester is the ugliest car besides the impressa that Subaru makes. Obviously does not understand what off-roading is all about. More serious off-roaders have been complaining about the bad off-road gearing which was fixed with his car. The off-road cladding was added to protect the sides of the car more and are designed to be replaceable in sections instead of entire front ends or entire rear ends etc. Of course you lose MPG but it's still better than driving a gas guzzler jeep or Tacoma whick i also own. Yes those vehicles are serious off-roaders but still my Crosstrek sport alone is way more capable than my Toyota corolla. And of course you get less bells and whistles than a Forester because it cost $3,000 less hello. Plus this one can haul and pull a lot more weight then previous models. This vehicle looks way cooler than any other off-road capable model Subaru makes!! As a Jeep Wrangler and Tacoma owner I am very impressed at what my Crosstrek sport alone can do. U obviously do not go off-roading as serious as some of us do to see where all of these new features come into play.

    I have a 2024 Limited. While it has less cladding than the wilderness it is still too much for my taste. I really like my Limited. Highway MPG is good. City MPG sucks, I regularly get 22MPG around town. I am 66. I don't have a lead foot. I really like the way it drives. The 2.5L has plenty of power for me. Feels solid and is very quiet for a small car. The Outback was bigger than I wanted and the Forester is kind of ugly. Heck, if it wasn't for my wife, I would drive a Miata. I compared it to Corolla Cross. The Crosstrek drives way better and come standard with AWD. I think the Wilderness trim levels are kind of silly. IMO, by far the best "Wilderness" model is the Outback, since you get the upgraded engine. I think the 2024 CT Sport model with new gold trim looks better than the Wilderness. Comparing this model to an Impreza seems a bit pointless unless you're saying that lifting an Impreza with aftermarket parts will give you essentially the same vehicle for less money? I'd guess it's a safer, more durable vehicle when engineered from Subaru with the additional ride height. We need the extra ground clearance for our roads so the less expensive Impreza is a no go. There are several attractive colors available for the Wilderness. I especially like the Sapphire Blue Pearl.

But having driven all the Subaru’s I will say the CT doesn’t feel like quite as nice of a vehicle as the other more expensive Subaru’s (no surprise as you usually get what you pay for). Sounds like a lot of nitpicking or sour grapes. The Forester might be a safer vehicle, but it has the same engine and it's a bigger, heavier vehicle. This makes the Crosstrek the faster of the two. And who gives a damn about power seats and moonroofs? You're going to complain about the lack of a manual as if you want a performance car, but then complain that it has no power seats or a moonroof, which are heavy, electrical luxuries. Do you want a performance car or a luxury car? And then you say that it doesn't perform any better than a Sport despite other reviewers showcasing this thing's off-road prowess and it is a beast, punching way above its weight class. And since you added your opinion about the cladding, I may as well add mine--I like the cladding. I think it's protective and very striking, and pairs well with certain colors.

      Your opinion is certainly valid. But I have to ask if you’ve driven a Wilderness? Or if you’ve driven other 37k ish Subarus, like a Forester Limited?
      It’s a Subaru so it’s obviously a good and very capable vehicle in the car class. But after driving several of them I can’t justify its price tag compared to many other Subarus and other Crossovers. • @AutomotiveAnonymous208

      It’s just disappointing to me that a car in this class, that cost over 35k, even with some mild AT tires is rated at only 25/28. It should at least be offered with the turbo 2.4 at that price and mpg rating. I’ve driven full size Silverados with the 3.0 Diesel on Goodyear Wrangler tires that get better MPG than this car. If you’ve watched any of my other Subaru video, I love Subaru! This one just rubs me the wrong way from the moment I first drove one. I just don’t personally see the value compared to the other trim levels and other models. I think Subaru dropped the ball on this one. @@AutomotiveAnonymous208 Yes, I have the Canadian "Outdoor" trim (Sport equivalent). I get the camera and heated steering wheel. My car also has a 3.9 final drive, which might be the sweet spot compared to the currently available 3.7 and 4.11 choices. I have achieved 39 true mpg on a road trip once. Generally I get 33 mixed driving with the stock tire, or 30 with a heavy winter tire on a stock wheel. This might be an interesting data point when compared to the wilderness equipment.

    Totally agree. I took one out for a test drive yesterday out of curiosity and it is nothing but a boring done up econobox with a big price tag. A manual transmission would go a long way in making it less boring at least, but still for a few thousand more, the Outback Wilderness is a much better option. Better platform and power, still CVT's just suck. Also, totally agree about Subarus giant screen, it is just stupid. Needs real controls for HVAC, buttons for stability control, and X-Mode. Subaru talks about safety and it is the furtherest thing from it, you have to take your eyes and attention off the road to do anything with the HVAC. Honda, Toyota, Mazda all are doubling down on the analog physical controls and corrected their mistakes from digitizing, but Subaru is apparently too stubborn and doubling down on stupidity. Also, how can a car like this not have a locking rear differential or at least a LSD? This thing should be around $28,000, top out at $30,000, and come with a 6MT option with an LSD and locking rear differential.

      Well said. For the price some of these are going for I’d rather find a nearly new SR5 4Runner.

    I agree with you on pricing but I love the extra black cladding. What takes this off the list for me is the lack of an embedded navigation system. Everybody says just use your phone's navigation but what I think everyone is missing is the fact that this vehicle is designed for going out in the middle of nowhere, where there is NO cell service. I travel extensively and spend a lot of time in areas without cell service and I need an embedded Nav system. I think that Subaru really dropped the ball not even offering a Nav system as an option. Other than that, I love the vehicle but I will not be buying one based on that one missing feature.

      Good point! I wouldn’t be surprised if they add navigation into an OP down the road! I mean they already have all the hardware and software, but I could be wrong if they want that reserved for other models.

    Just watched your other video where you compare Forrester and Crosstrek. Wilderness. "Which one is better " You posted it 6 days before this one
    ruclips.net/video/CqnBgkOxlqs/видео.htmlfeature=shared
    Why didn't you give all the same opinions you have in this video in that "vs" comparison video?
    Thought during my research I was watching another person posting a different video and realized it was the same person posting 7 days later.
    Confusing... Because you end the comparison saying both "honestly are phenomenal options" but seem to crap on the Crosstrek in this video?
    So Forrester wilderness in your opinion is better for the difference in price vs the Crosstrek wilderness?

    • @AutomotiveAnonymous208
      @AutomotiveAnonymous208  9 месяцев назад

      I’m sorry for any confusion. I filmed them both at the same time. The Crosstrek is a good vehicle (because it’s a Subaru), but the more I was around it on the two different days I borrowed one (the other day was the regular Crosstrek wilderness video I did a week earlier than these) the more I’m disappointed in its value, IMO. I do think a Forester Wilderness, which now can likely be found for $500-2,000 under MSRP is a better vehicle than a Crosstrek Wilderness, even when both are MSRP. I think I was more objective with the comparison video and maybe more subjective with my thoughts on the value in the 7 issues video. Again, I apologize for the confusion, I have mixed thoughts and opinions on the Crosstrek, lol. 😅
