@@TheSpoovy There are a number of things which influenced my decision. These are the biggest factors: color display is much larger and easy to use, the 10 speaker updated sound system, the updated seats are more comfortable, the extra ground clearance and protective molding around the front, sides and rear, the larger but still quite efficient engine giving a great boost in horse power, the wireless bluetooth connectivity and charging, updated LED fog lights, adaptive cruise control and extra clearance. It also has decent towing if you will be pulling anything such as a boat or camper. I also love the looks. I have had it a little over four months and absolutely love it. @@jamesponicsan6129 Enjoyed my underpowered 2014 Crosstrek, but when they dropped the MT, I dropped Subaru. No love from Subaru for engaging, reliable transmissions, apparently.
I was actually very surprised by the body control and cornering on that rally stage! Totally agree they need to make a Crosstrek WRX or STI or XT most likely, whatever they want to call it. My understanding is the main reason they haven't is the naturally aspirated Crossrrek already sells so well they can't produce enough to need to make another model to increase sales to a wider audience.
Thanks Sarah, it is sad that there is no manual version, but it is surprisingly agile. I really didn't expect it to climb all the way to the top of that hill.
@@GJJC13 it's not a road racer, it's a sport utility vehicle. As long as it gets you wherever you are going it doesn't need a high 0-60. And as far as this video proves, it can even climb over things with normal road tyres.

I am so glad I got my 2023 Crosstrek Sport with a manual, and the strut tower brace. What a swiss army knife! It eats up deep snow. I drove through a major snowstorm last year and posted the dashcam footage.
Finally there's no fake shifting since 2014, now I can actually buy one! I hope they have an off setting for the daytime running lights unsafe glare makers that I always delete on my Suby's
We have a 2014 Crosstrek, and one thing we've found very frustrating vs. our previous Subaru is that the car wheels do not fit in the trunk. So when we take it in to have the snow tires put on or taken off, they have to put two wheels in the back seat. In our previous Subaru all four wheels fit in the trunk standing up, but the Crosstrek's trunk isn't deep enough for even one wheel to stand up facing front/back.
@@atticstattic It was an older generation Outback, before Subaru made it larger. When we bought the Crosstrek, the dealer said it was the direct replacement for the older Outback, as the new Outback was much larger. I'd say the front and rear seats are similar, but the trunk is about a third of a foot shorter from the back of the rear seat to the rear door, which makes the wheels/tires not fit. Even if you fold the seats down.
@@SarahnTunedEnthusiasts might want and be able to afford new cars, but it seems they're less willing to pay for extras they don't need, such as lane departure assist, rain sensing wipers, infotainment systems overpriced for what they are, etc. Enthusiasts just want a basic, quick, enjoyable car. Car makers don't want to sell these kinds of cars when they can make much more by adding endless bells and whistles. This is the same situation as housing: many want a starter home, but builders are unwilling to build starter homes when they can build granite counter-top mansions on the same lot and make more profit. Things will only change in these industries when consumers stop rewarding bad behavior and take their money elsewhere. Easier said than done, unfortunately...
@@SarahnTuned I'd argue it's more the fault of states with rediculous laws like California that severely limit how you can modify a car. California is not the only state with rediculous laws.
Love Subarus! Best value for your money, I traded in my 2014 Crosstrek with 97k miles, I had paid just over 22k and got 14k as a trade in value and got another one but not the Wilderness, got a Sport for a little over 30k.
Imagine the 2.4 litre turbo, a manual, wrx brakes with gold accented wheels. Now that would be real wild rallying beast! Great review. Thank you Sarah.
But turbos suck. And when they go bad whatever vehicle they're on is one slow-moving low compression dying dog. And the extra pressure and heat makes your engine not last long. And when turbos come on and are running they are sucking up the gas! Better to make a better naturally aspirated engine. And when you're trying to off-road that turbos on and if you're not driving like Grandma on the way to church on Sunday the turbos probably coming on and sucking down that gas
@@RRr-yl8zr Personally I'm with you, I prefer NA engines... But the reality is that turbo's only increase fuel usage when they're seriously boosting, an NA engine with equivalent horsepower increases fuel usage all the time... compare EPA estimates for equivalent HP/Torque turbo and NA engines... the turbo wins. The reason you're seeing all these vehicles with smaller engines and turbo's is that they're are getting heavier (safety reg's, tech, etc.) and need to meet tightening fuel economy standards... and manufacturers can't (or it's too expensive) meet these requirements with NA engines. Lastly, If the base engine isn't designed for a turbo, then you're right, they won't last as long... but if the diesel and aviation worlds have taught us anything it's that an engine that's engineered for a turbo (and reliability) can last a very long time (within 10% of a well designed NA)... you just have to take care of them (more frequent fluid changes, etc.).
Intersting that you just reviewed this. My girlfriend just bought a lightly used 2023 Crosstrek because is the last of the 6-speed manuals. With the CVT we couldn't possibly consider the Wilderness. :( Subaru could sell boatloads of a turbo STI version with manual transmission or at least one with with dual range transfer case and lockers. But honestly, for the price, you're within striking distance of a Tacoma Offroad with the V-6 and manual. I bet it has to do with EPA regulations and gas mileage requirements which are killing off performance vehicles with manual transmissions.
The little donuts in the cup holders are for people who drink small drinks and don't like the holders which are designed for 'merican sized drinks. You can size up the hole, so to speak. I had the slightly anemic 14 Crosstrek and it was great. I now have the 24 Outback Wilderness, and it is exceptional. I don't think anyone makes better daily drivers for bad weather and crappy roads.
Yea, I have an Impreza. I dont go off road at all, and a taller Crosstrek would be hard for my wife to step up into. Even without x-mode and on the factory all season radials, it is a beast in the snow. I plan on replacing the stock tires with Michelin Cross Climate 2s soon for better snow traction.
This Subi is lucky to be reviewed by Sarah. By far the foremost automotive reviewer. I was able to compare and see how the Crosstrek Wilderness is much more of a utility vehicle than my fancy shmancy German ride of the same size.
For some reason, I had not realised it was essentially a off-road version of the Impreza - I'd say it looks way better than the Impreza, (which frankly is a bit "meh"-looking) and the fact that the off-road look was not just for show, as is often the case made it all the more likable. And I can't tell you enough how great your reviews are - simply the best of the best. Thank you for what you do and Stay Awesome!
At this price point the Crosstrek is very decent. Add the turbo and the manual with the shocks and now you're into a niche. A fun niche but still a niche.
You've got to do more reviews, you're channel is awesome, so much detail and knowledge. You're better than most review channels. Keep up the great work.
I'm still not a huge fan of the strange blobby plastic fender covers and the way the body cladding dips down at the front and rear of the doors, but it looks better on the Crosstrek than it does on the Outback. Overall I still like the wilderness series quite a bit. My friend just bought an Outback Onyx XT and he is enjoying it.
My aunt and uncle with the 15 Forrester XT in fact it’s the same color you have Sarah they just broke down and sold their 19 navigator and bought a fully loaded outback XT!
Once a upon a time the Crosstrek would have been my pick it its category but not anymore. Just can't get over the plastic cladding and the CVT. Keep up the good work Sarah and thanks for the review.
The cladding is functional. Plastic doesn’t rust. I’ve been cutting the body rust out of my vehicle all week. And welding. And angle grinding. And Bondo layering. And sanding. Soon painting, but winter happened early here. Would much rather have had plastic cladding in high-rust areas. I’d imagine that’s some of the reasoning behind how prevalent it is these days.
@@perilthecat Functional or not it's ugly and the car will still rust especially driving on salted roads. Then after a couple years all that plastic starts to fade and look really bad.
@@David-mm5vl The bits that are plastic won't rust! And I'd rather have slightly faded plastic than rust. My 2018 crosstrek plastic doesn't look faded at all by the way.
Even in Canada the MSRP is reasonable for what you actually get. I had been leaning hard towards a Forester but at this price point (roughly $40k CAD) and the features it has it is really appealing. Anyway, thank you for another fun review. 😁
As much as I want to love Subaru, I can't. My 2015 Forester XT has been a money pit with numerous mechanical failures. The fact it's paid for and I have two kids in college, are the only reasons I still have it. 60k front lower control arms replaced due to bushing failure, 65k both front cv shafts replaced, 115k (15k past the powertrain warranty) due to front pinion failure the transmission was replaced because it's internal (because I bitched, SubaruUSA paid $4k of the nearly $9k bill), 145k all four hub bearing assemblies replaced at , and at 160k the ECU had a permanent burned in code causing the car to shutter and idle rough. I am currently at 166k and just had to replace the rear hub assemblies Again! A friend bought a Crosstrek and traded it a year later, reason: three rear hub assemblies crapped out, and even though they got replaced under warranty, it was no bueno.
Damn.. it did better than the Outback Wilderness climbing that hill! Very impressive. That 4.11 back differential gear ratio surely helps. Great review! 🔥👍 Oh btw, yes it comes with a CVT cooler. That's why it can tow up to 3500 lbs.
The Crosstrek Wilderness is very cool! I would love one but... alas, had they offered the TY751 manual transmission from the gen2 Crosstrek I would have waited and bought one of these. But I am very happy with with my Gen2 Crosstrek 6MT despite having the FB20. It feels great to be able to row through the gears and not have robots interfere with the HCU (Human Control Unit). AVO does make a turbo for the FB20, so not all is lost for a turbo option. Great review on the Crosstrek Wilderness! Appreciate the thoroughness.
Hey Sarah, I wouldn’t have believed it if I didn’t see it with my own eyes, especially after the takeoff, I would’ve never thought that thing would’ve made it up that hill I give credit to the driver have a great one🐧🐧🐧👍
At least the FA/FB series of engines has proven pretty reliable. Not a very powerful engine, but Subaru used to have a reputation of absolutely stellar reliability and if they can rebuild that it will be best for the brand long-term.
@@RYTHMICRIOT The head gasket issues were with the naturally aspirated EJ25. The issue was largely resolved by 2005 with further revision in 2010 I believe though the engine was discontinued after 2012. The FA/FB engines have never had prevalent head gasket issues and they are timing chain engines so less maintenance is required as well. All models except the STI switched to the FA/FB series engines from 2011-2015 excluding models which came with the EZ36 which was discontinued after 2019. The EZ36 was also very reliable and never had head gasket issues.
@802Garage I bought my daughter 2 H6 outback wagons. First was a 2002. Transmission failed around 230k, bought her another 2003, which lasted a couple years before developing overheating problems. Never had head gasket problems with either of them. Overall, they were decent cars.
@@RYTHMICRIOT Wonder why the 2003 had overheating. The very early H6 engines had some external head gasket weeping occasionally IIRC, but it wasn't super common. Most lasted several hundred thousand miles like yours. I have an EZ30 with 240K on it I think. Still ran great. The EZ36 was pretty much dead reliable overall.
The blank spots next to the interior dash dimmer would be the lift gate button and the memory lift gate button. Since the crosstrek wilderness doesn't have the lift gate those buttons are blank.
The minute Subaru stick a CVT in anything is the exact moment the fun is sucked outta the car MCM did the Levorg right by putting a H6 in the engine bay and 6speed swapping it 😂
I saw somebody that put an aftermarket locking different maybe Forrester wilderness? And it was pretty much keeping up with the Toyota 4runner. 🤔. Actually I think the Subaru might have been doing better in some respects / areas because I think it might have had a lift on it too?
Doesn't come close to the towing capability. My mom is here today visiting me. She bought one. Great car but I hooked up my tool trailer and nope, not going to happen. Everything else you say, I'm lost. I'm just a guy with trucks that pull multiple trailers. First time commenting and I have never been able to because your way more advanced than I will ever be. But I know towing. I'm done.
I wish YT commenters would stop saying the never-gonna-happen cliche' of this car needing 400+hp, a manual transmission, Brembo brakes, carbon fiber suspension, etc. All for under $30K, too. If you don't want one, don't buy one.
The graphic on the rubber base in the cupholders is a mountain peak. The same mountain peak that's on the plastic trim on the rear bumper, the one that has the little Crosstrek on it. My friend just bought one of these. It's pretty badass.
I've always wondered why they don't make an STI Crosstrek. I mean the Japanese car brands are bringing out more performance cars. I think its time for Subaru to really make it happen
This would sell really well if it had the turbo. Adding the manual box would do wonders as well. Still, for what it is, it’s got some serious off road capabilities. 👍🏻 Btw, the little engravings in those cup holders are mountain peaks. Roughly the same style you see on the trim in the back hatch. 😉
I respectfully disagree. The wilderness trims are far and away already becoming their bestsellers for every model, even with no turbo in the forester or crosstrek wilderness trims. This model starts at $35,000- do you think it would actually sell well if it cost $39,000 because of the added turbo? I don’t think so personally. That’s starting to get into a different price range considering the base crosstrek is $24,995!
Im seriously considering buying a new Subaru. I just cant decide on which one but im leaning toward the little Crosstrek. I already have a big F350 dually for long trips. Its so comfortable and powerful. The little Subi is perfect for driving to work everyday and pulling my Jetski. I do wish it was turbo charged. Theres nothing more annoying then then having no power.
They lost me when I heard CVT. I do not like CVT on anything... well, maybe a golf cart. Can you imagine what those hairy plastic 'skid plates' will look like after about a year of use? Nast-tee.

My wife actually went and bought a Crosstrek Limited just a couple weeks ago because of all the safety features and Subaru's dependability/resale value.
@@jamesponicsan6129 Enjoyed my underpowered 2014 Crosstrek, but when they dropped the MT, I dropped Subaru. No love from Subaru for engaging, reliable transmissions, apparently.
I really like your review style. No BS mixed with some sarcasm. Thanks for the review!
The torque vectoring helps, and it felt like they dialed back the VDC some from the last one I reviewed a couple years back.
Great review. The Crosstrek does have a telemetry screen that shows what the AWD system is doing as well as angle of climb or decent and tilt angle.
That extra intercooler on the front is in fact for the transmission! Its part of the reason it can now tow 3,500lbs!
That's awesome, the CVT cooler used to be integrated as a separate chamber into the radiator on past models.
Great, in Europe we can watch your video without waiting until tomorrow morning despite the time difference. That Subaru looks good.
Thanks Sarah, it is sad that there is no manual version, but it is surprisingly agile. I really didn't expect it to climb all the way to the top of that hill.
Me either! lol
You could’ve crawled under the center, when it was nearing the top.
Isn't it a bit slow from 0-60?
@@GJJC13 it's not a road racer, it's a sport utility vehicle. As long as it gets you wherever you are going it doesn't need a high 0-60. And as far as this video proves, it can even climb over things with normal road tyres.
The manual was a turd with 150hp
I had a 2004 Forester 2.5l Turbo, 5spd. So much fun! Off-road beast, towed our camp trailer really well and 90MPH on dirt roads.
Could spin all 4 wheels on a launch... keep your little weenie CVT.
I think the Wilderness models do have a dedicated CVT cooler. That's part of reason they can bump towing from 1500 to 3500 pounds.
yes
I think it also has a bigger radiator
Only Sarah can give a review thats as informative as it is entertaining, in Sarah's kinda way.😊
Wow finned rear diff body and cover. That's an upgrade I hadn't seen before.
The Harmon/Kardon is totally worth, was doing some hard jammin to "You ain't seen nothing yet" whilst chasing down an Altima 2 days ago.
This should be another epic review from her Sarah-ness 😊❤️
the additional heat exchanger is for the cvt. its what allows it to tow more than the non wilderness to keep the cvt fluid from overheating
It’ll probably also increase the longevity of the transmission under normal use as well.
What was the previous car?
@@atticstattic It was an older generation Outback, before Subaru made it larger. When we bought the Crosstrek, the dealer said it was the direct replacement for the older Outback, as the new Outback was much larger. I'd say the front and rear seats are similar, but the trunk is about a third of a foot shorter from the back of the rear seat to the rear door, which makes the wheels/tires not fit. Even if you fold the seats down.
@@Trifler500
There's no way a lifted Impreza would replace a station wagon thing like an outback, dealer was bs'ing.
Or just run a 3 peak rated all terrain tire year round.
EDIT - Unless of course you live in an area where you REALLY need dedicated winter/snow tires.
Was your previous Subaru crosstrek? Or was it a Forester or a outback...?
As a former Crosstrek owner, you've done an amazing review.
I have been waiting for a review on this, and Sarah’s reviews give the best information.
One of my co workers have Crosstrek & i drove it few times, what an awesome & amazing car, Subaru are kicking it
Subaru has clearly made the decision to no longer target enthusiasts. I blame the bean counters.
Its because enthusiast that can afford new cars are becoming a smaller and smaller group, the whole system is full of issues.
Giving it the bean... counters
Put an exhaust system on your car and not only do you get a fat ticket your car gets impounded and you can't drive it on the street until you "fix;' it.

All for under $30K, too? Probably worth trading in your Camry for that, eh?
Just lift a WRX
This was one of the best car reviews i watched. just as it supposed to be.
Great job!
It needs a turbo and a electronic locking diff, and it'd be amazing.
Turbos destroy reliability
Not if you take care of them... If you treat them like most Americans treat their cars, then you're right. @@billricheter5678
Yo,
I lover your car reviews. Your nuggets of knowledge are awesome
What ?? Price range of Crosstrek is in range of Tacoma??
Sarah thanks to your review among others 😄I purchased a Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness!
The head lights wiggle during start up
Kool!!
At this price point the Crosstrek is very decent. Add the turbo and the manual with the shocks and now you're into a niche. A fun niche but still a niche.
Maybe, 500 hp and under $30K? May even be worth trading in your Camry, right?
No one would buy it it would cost like 45k
This review is a work of art. Bravo.
The hiiills are alliiivee with the sounds of "ARE YOU SERIOUS?!"
At least the FA/FB series of engines has proven pretty reliable. Not a very powerful engine, but Subaru used to have a reputation of absolutely stellar reliability and if they can rebuild that it will be best for the brand long-term.
What generation did they fix the head gasket issues?
Nice review! I just picked up the big brother Outback Wilderness. So far so good!
I'm done.
I just bought mine with the same color "Pearl white" love it! Love this review!
Agreed! Maybe, 500 hp?
Great review Sarah. A friend just bought one of these.
This would sell really well if it had the turbo. Adding the manual box would do wonders as well.
Still, for what it is, it’s got some serious off road capabilities. 👍🏻
Btw, the little engravings in those cup holders are mountain peaks.
The CVT would most likely not handle the added torque spike of a turbo and the car would need a 'real' transmission in addition to the turbo.
Not knowing your background, I was really impressed with you climbing the hill and knowing those bumps are called whoops! Great review, thank you.
I hate those fake shifting CVTs.
They still fake shift in Subaru unless you do a brake stand.
@@mitchellhuth Or "Give it the BEANS"

The CVT is a major deal breaker.
Nast-tee.
SPARCO ALL-TERRAIN TERRA 17x7.5 +45 in Rally Gold finish might look really nice on this car. As well as in white - for this particular car, that's also white.
Nah, BBS or Prodrives
9:05 Wilderness models have a dedicated CVT cooler, hence why they have higher towing capacity and better off-road reliability
