2004, as I said on another recent post, a totally Phil Mitchell free year. He was on the run after Den set him up, and was probably hiding in barns in the countryside somewhere and having time to himself. Den vowed to make him pay for slapping his Princess.

And by the time he came back, Den and Andy were already dead.

@@H.K.5 When Phil came back in April 2005 he may not yet have known Den was dead by then. If Den had lived, I guess Phil and Den would have continued their feud.

A very poor year for the show, EE couldn't do anything right from poor storylines to clunky dialogue ("Get Den Watts") to flop characters such as Shirley Benson and The Ferrara's. It's bad to imagine that things actually got much worse.

@@tomhiggins6542 After the Den vs Phil war, Den sort of became a glorified extra in much of 2004 and was absent for dribs and drabs throughout the year. I read that he was scheduled to stay on until 2006, but Leslie said he only signed up for 18 months. He was axed due to offscreen shenanigans in the dressing room though, but has hinted he has denied this.

@@Uksoapfan he was axed after the sex scandal. Writers pretty went out of their way to bury Den in order to punish Grantham.
