Actually. I have met him. My son played him on a show about him. My son was him when he was a kid in flashback scenes. His mother was murdered by his stepdad. He knew it. It was him and his older brother, brother went to prison for murder. His grandmother died of alcohol abuse... and he grew up to be a detective, his whole obsession is proving that his mother's killer was his step-dad. He solved every case and in every case he was reminded of his mother.
Refusing to talk until you have lawyer is the smart thing to do, even if you're completely innocent

Yeah, people should realize that this guy will be biased in favor of the investigators. Who cares if they're frustrated. Your number one priority is your own safety and wellbeing. Any innocuous thing you say or do once you start talking to them can be twisted to be used against you, even when you're innocent. Share any pertinent/important details you need to with them at the scene ("I saw him with a weapon, I think he threw them into those bushes before running off that way") but after that you are perfectly within your rights to insist on a lawyer being present before any further questioning occurs.

That's why I have so much more respect for murder police. I like to imagine most murder police are in the job because they feel passionate about catching bad people and providing justice to victims and their families. I'm sure there are exceptions but for the most part, that is my perception of homicide detectives.

I always cringe when TV cops use their pen to touch evidence. Ah yes, because the pen you never sterilize, use everyday without washing your hands, and keep in your personal clothing will not cross-contaminate the evidence.
One of these I saw, the expert made this very comment on a scene.

To be fair, they look pretty pinchable, a real grandma magnet lol. I also liked his openness and honesty, especially when he talked about some of the criminal elements in the police force.

In Ace Ventura, you need to take into account that when she touched the blood, she was also the murderer. So her cleaning up after the crime and removing the evidence probably trumped the biohazard risk.

Yes, but also no. It is chilling to watch interrogation training videos and how far police officers are willing to go to put psychological pressure on a suspect or to lull somebody into talking to them while staying borderline legal. And since most people can't afford expensive teams of lawyers and to drag this into court, it goes under which is exactly why the common advice is to *never, under any circumstances, talk to the police without a lawyer present.* Not because you are guilty, not because you want to obstruct the investigation but because you never know what will be made of your statements. I believe this is a pretty classic case of the intent of the law versus the application of it.
While understanding he had a job to do, it was (not?) amusing how brief he was about how anyone tied to an investigation asking for an attorney might “frustrate” the investigators.
Loved when he said "when you are wrong even a little bit you lose all credability" since the mentalist guy just said "you wear your watch on your right arm so you are left handed. Not necessarily. When i wear a watch i prefer to wear it on my right. And i am right handed. So by the mentalists logic in that scene i am a suspect when clearly i'm not.

I started wearing my watch on my right hand when I was 15 because I didn't want to scratch my guitar.
I'm guessing people who do generally wear digital watches? Otherwise the crown is on the arm side and super awkward to adjust.
I have never before heard any police or detective ever discuss and/or admit that narcotics investigation was/is extremely corrupt and dirty. Love his honesty... he's pretty badass
Interesting is, that in another breakdown of the same scene another investigator said something along the lines of: nobody ever would do that, it‘s not worth losing your reputation and your job over it..

@@c0rdita Boom, that's exactly what i wanted to say, just watched that vid before this one and remember thinking this guy is either naive or I've been brainwashed by US TV into thinking all cops are weak and corrupt.
I think the main difference between the 2 guys is that this cop here is closer to the harsh realities of urban life whereas the other was more of a lab-rat scientist who collects and analyses samples. By the time he arrives, all the money has been stolen already so he has no clue!
The honesty of this detective is refreshing.
Everytime a David Fincher film comes up on one of these things, the experts always praise how accurate it is compared to the others. Really makes me love the attention to detail in his films even more.

@@danielwong5378 what I do know is that when I was trained by medical professionals to use Narcan I was told specifically to mention that the victim was not breathing and not specify that it was an overdose because it is well known that medical professionals and law enforcement respond more slowly to overdoses. I'm not saying everywhere of course not, but in big cities it is a well known truth that responses are slower for ODs
@@samanthabielz9865 hey, as an EMT who has works his fair share of overdoses, I can tell you that is absolutely, categorically NOT true.
All of our times are recorded and attached to our patient care reports. When the call goes out over the radio, when we acknowledge it, when we call out that we are en route, when we arrive on scene, when we are transporting. If my supervisor sees that I’m taking my sweet time to respond to overdoses, I will be taken into their office, screamed at until they are blue in the face, likely have my license stripped and possibly prosecuted for criminal negligence.
We are human beings, and we signed up to do the job of treating people in an emergent setting. Even the most jaded, salty, burnt out EMT or paramedic will drive lights and sirens to an overdose. They will treat that patient to the best of their ability. Also, opiate ODs are pretty easy, at least medically speaking, though they can suck for a host of other reasons.
Cops will drive lights and sirens to an overdose. Not because they want to make an arrest, but because their cruiser is faster than my ambulance, and they can get there and administer narcan faster.
DO NOT misrepresent the nature of a 911 call to your dispatcher. We are there to help. Give us all of the information we need to help. You are only hurting the outcome of the patient by doing this.

TBH I care much less about them skimming off the top of drug money than I do about his statements about them misidentifying suspects and chasing the wrong person who may be jailed or worst case scenario killed.
About 80% of interrogation videos I’ve seen have been the cops telling the person what they did and then repeating it until the person agrees. I’ve almost never seen an interrogation go the way this man says it should go. I’m sure anyone into true crime could back me up on that.

I can back you up on that. And yes there is a risk of getting a false confession. And no, the detectives don't care about that.
I have been interrogated 3 times in my life, everytime the officer would try to bully me into agreeing with him or make me doubt myself exactly the way you describe.
Per Breaking Bad, the cleaner says that 'when you call it in' the office of medical investigation will show up. He didn't say anything about calling the coroner. I wouldn't think thats all that far fetched. You call to say you believe someone may have od'd not that someone was murdered.

@Moist Gnome There is no worse feeling than a cop giving you the "I know blah blah blah, give it up and Ill go easy on you" and you keep telling him there isn't anything to give up and hes getting more and more furious. You know hes starting to get personal but you can't tell anything but the truth. There's nothing to give up officer.
i don't think you know what a coroner is... it merely requires a person died, not a murder...
@@Neon_Nectarine Right. I don't think you know what I meant when I made the comment. The homicide detective doing the review didn't accurately relay what was actually said in the scene. Hence the line that the cleaner never said "anything about calling a coroner". He said "once you call it in...." (which i assume to mean call 911, which is what you'd do) and he continued about the people who arrived being with the office of medical investigation. The actual homicide detective said "when he said 'you call into the coroners office and its going to take a while'...." but that's not at all what was said. When a coroner does come and confirms that she appears to have died of an accidental od, I can certainly see the cops treating it as low priority. The last thing I said about what one would relay when calling 911 was in reference to how the police might approach the scene, not whether or not a coroner would come.
Thomas Murphy the duty of a coroner is to investigate all sudden and unexpected deaths, your assumption that "calling it in" is referring generically to police officers is wrong as the job would instantly be referred to a coroner and then to detectives if circumstances require it. if anything he was being more specific and informative than breaking bad was

My forensics teacher was a forensic entomologist, and his brother was in the bomb-analysis squad for Homeland Security!!! They’re both retired now, but he always told little stories about cases that he helped solve.

I think they took great pains to make it as accurate as possible. So it would be interesting to see what he says. But it might just be “yep, that’s accurate”. 👍🏼

You should always ask for a lawyer, while it may slow things down, you are much safer. Also, in "Making a Murderer" the cops are clearly leading a underage witness, without a lawyer or guardian, and the judge still allows it. Soooo, that happens as well.
When I saw the Training day title scene, I figured he was about to call it fantasy and exaggerated. Instead he was like, yup.

Obsessed with his series on Discovery ID! Deals with issues pertaining to race and that in-group mentality in the police force that he touched on in the section about Ace. Extremely interesting and insightful.

But being a homicide detective in Shreveport Louisiana has pretty little to do with interviewing with FBI profiling or interviewing serial killers. Or anything about serial killers really. Might be cool to watch, but not relevant to the topic, less interesting because he doesn't seem to have seen any of these shows before watching them to "fact check them".

Thanks for mentioning the snacking to feel better on scene. A lot of people think 1st responders, investigators, crime scene cleanup etc go numb and don't care. Most do not, it's a tragedy every time.
I'd like to see the Columbo episode about the blind witness being fact-checked by Detective Demery. Columbo's premise that the criminal couldn't assume that the decoy blind witness was blind without the criminal having been at the crime scene is ludicrous because they coached the decoy blind witness on how to behave like a blind person would to entrap the criminal. I'd like to see quite a few Columbo episodes fact-checked.

Yeah, my mom watched that. You'd be astonished how quickly people will admit to being involved in a murder when the police have no evidence whatsoever. I remember this one episode where the police heard a rumor on the street that a guy was involved in a murder. They came into his barber shop and said we want to talk you this murder. He goes, "Man I knew this would catch up to me one day. I was there but I didn't do it and I threw the gun into this lake afterwards." He got charged with the murder because it didn't fit the other guy's MO. They had NOTHING on this guy but a rumor.
The show is kinda named after him, his mother was murdered when he was a child.

I love the honesty regarding police corruption, you don't often find police that are willing to openly admit and explain how corruption has permeated areas of the police force. This cop is, I think it is fair to say, a genuinely good cop.
The point of Sherlock is exactly that he does everything that's forbidden and even against the law. But he's the smartest and the police would've never gotten the same results without him, they wouldn't have solved half of what he did. So they let it slide. Same with House and the hospital affairs.
The problem is that in reality they wouldn't let it slide. He just completely destroyed their investigation and most of what they come up with would be thrown out...
That was one of my favorite scenes, when Ace opened and closed the door while yelling

They break sooooo many laws in Criminal Minds. Same in CSI, and most cop shows. Police violating the civil liberties of citizens is glorified in almost all cop shows. And CSI is chalk full of Junk Science. A lot of what they say is science is not even close to true, and much of it has been proven to be unreliable.

One of my favorite crime scenes in a movie is " The Departed. " An honest polic d man shows up at the murderous corrupt policeman apartment. He is wearing rubber gloves , overshoes repairmen wear for walking on carpets , hospital scrubs, hair net and pistol with a suppressor
Has this man ever watched Sherlock. Does he know he's not even part of the police force and his whole character is "he wouldn't be doing that cause it's against the law, so that's not very realistic"
The answer is yes, he has seen part of one episode of Sherlock, we just watched him do so. Also portion of one episode of the Mentalist (who is not a detective and thus why the mentalist, a type of stage performer, does not act like a detective). Problem with these things, the people have commonly not seen more than the parts we watch them see, can think of a few other GQ and Vanity Fair with similar problems (or where the guy states "I have never seen this before". The animal dude never saw Jaws man. Jaws). Anyways, not on this guy, that's on Vanity Fair.
You would get that by reading Sherlock too. Also Sherlock is British and the crime is in UK too so what he does would be illegal but not a felony.
I know i'm a weeb but i can't be the only one who would love to see this man try and solve a danganronpa murder case.

I like his honesty on this stuff, and the fact he explains what you can and can't do, but the fact there are known and proven cases that haven't been overturned using the tactics he says you can't do is very confusing.

In the case of Jesse ... if I call the police and say my great grandfather has died I'm pretty sure they aren't going to assume it was a homicide.
When my grandmother was terminally ill we were told that she had to be placed under hospice care because anyone who dies that isn't under hospice care has to be investigated by the police regardless of age or medical history.

Overdoses or any death for that matter with obvious deaths symptoms are not a high priority in law enforcement, they are investigated thoroughly, but they will not be in a hurry to get there idk what this guy is talking about.

I’d love to see this guy review some Monk episodes. Especially since Monk loves to do his summation with the suspect in the room.
There was an episode of Monk where a reporter was interviewing 3 prisoners Monk put away. “ Oh my god. The summation. I love when people tell me what I’ve already done.”
Regarding the first clip and spoilers for a super old Ace Ventura movie but seeing as how the detective who wiped her finger through the blood is actually the bad guy that could just be seen as purposeful tampering with evidence. After all that entire scene she is stonewalling Ventura for that reason.
Really hoped to see The Shield here, considering that it goes for hard realism and that drug busts are the bread and butter of the main characters.

gonna be honest, got a kick out of how frustrated he was by the advice Mike gave criminals in Breaking Bad
The Wire has some good scene it would be interesting to hear his take on, there's one in particular where the Detective (Jimmy Mcnultu) alters the scene where a homeless man has died in an abandoned house. The show was written by a former homicide Detective and it received alot of praise for being extremely realistic in the way it shows the inner workings of the cops

See bud where ur wrong is people DO break into crime scenes. I'VE broken into a drug dealers house after they got picked up and the police raided their house. Actually did it 2 different times and the last of which I made multiple trips. U would be amazed what an addict will do for drugs
I don't think he was claiming it wouldn't happen. He was stating an investigator wouldn't be doing it, because he just messed up the investigation.

IIRC it's actually loosely based on true events. not the specific characters, but parts of the LAPD were and are actually that corrupt. (look up rampart scandal).
