A few other reasons to not move here: sky rocketing crime, not being able to walk around downtown and not constantly be hassled for money. But yes, the traffic is awful, the prices are awful, and every where you go there is a long wait. It’s just grown too much too quickly.

    • @MrJackattack2000

Sky rocketing crime? Maybe for austin standards 😂😂😂 i was born in austin, I’ve been residing in houston for like 15 years. Austin used to be cool now its the fake LA. Houston has a crime problem, not austin. Come walk around downtown houston and you’ll realize how great austin is in terms of crime and safety. Anytime theres an explosion in population, crime typically follows.

I was out in Austin last year in the middle of June to scope it out for a possible move and boy you are right, that heat was unbearable, it was crazy. I was considering moving there , the heat I can get used to but what made me change my mind is that the cost of living in Austin has gotten ridiculously high. In just a couple of years cost of living has sky rocketed. I can’t believe Austin is now the most expensive city to live in Texas. It’s astounding.

I am a rarity because I was born and raised in Austin! To be honest it’s so sad to watch the city change the way it has. Not to hate on people that move here but so many people have brought where they moved from culture here and really changed our vibe. We were once a big city but it still felt like you were in a small town. The very first house we bought was 119K and later sold that nine years later for 240K, it is now going for 800K because it is so close to the domain where a lot of tech companies are headquartered in. If you want to buy something larger than what you just sold then you have to look outside of Austin, which is exactly what we did and moved to Georgetown. I think a lot of the old locals moved to smaller towns around Austin because we messed what it wants was. Everyone knew everybody… If you ever want to see if someone really grew up in Austin then ask them ” do you remember who Leslie is?“ if they can tell you who he is and what he used to do then they’re a real one lol
Also, something that really helps with allergies around here is finding someone that harvest raw honey within 15 miles from where you live I am taking a spoonful of it every morning! If you have an allergy to Cedar the best thing to do is to barbecue with it at least once a month I need to just start becoming more immune to it. Just some local advice :-). I’m glad that you love Austin as much as I do, that means a lot.🎉

I was born in Austin in 1987, but in 1992 I moved with my family to Santiago de Chile (my parents are chilean by the way). In 2019, after so many years, I visited Austin for vacations, and during the last days I took the decision of moving here someday.
Well, I finally moved here in April 2022 and I noticed some changes. I knew the traffic in Downtown can be awful, but in 2022 I noticed the drivers became more reckless than usual, so I have been very careful when I take a walk and cross the streets. Besides, the public transportation is still very limited, in special when I want to go to Round Rock, Georgetown, Cedar Park or Lake Travis.
Yeah! Texas summer is hotter than Chile, but I feel 2023 is being wetter than 2022. And you forgot to mention... mosquitoes! snakes! hammerhead worms!
I know Austin is not a perfect city, however, there was something here that made me feel like home when I visited the city in 2019.
    Cheers ;)

Been in Texas all my life and been living in Austin for the past 4 years, it definitely doesn't support a middle class family. Overpopulated, infrastructure & govt services are non-existent due to the understaffed/overworked govt because of extremely low tax rates (and people fighting property tax increases), oppressive heat, and deteriorating natural scenery (pollution), and increasing homelessness. And like you mentioned the original Austin music and art scene is gone now. The city (and really the state) is only serving wealth investors, landowners, and corporations IMO.

I agree. Austin is not really capable of sustaining this many people so quickly. There is no form of public transportation here so if you don’t have a car, then you’re essentially screwed. The bus system here is extremely incomplete and the train system is nonexistent. There’s one little downtown train that probably has like three or four stops that’s it. And that’s more for the campus area. Keep Austin weird is no longer viable in this city because the corporations are here and the mom and pops locations are closing down so the concept of keep Austin weird was meant for small business owners. Small business owners are struggling. Also the taco truck community here is gotten out of control. Pay just as much as a taco truck as you were going to go into a restaurant with Service. The tipping culture here is astronomically ridiculous. It’s worse than LA or Cali in general. People here want to get tipped for working at a fast food joint. What that’s absolutely crazy. You hand me something from behind the counter, and they expect to give them a tip. Austin is a huge disappointment and a huge hype
