All these twin turbo builds are so awesome guys. From the 86 to the Landcruiser to this, loving each one. It's more the education of how each system is made and the work that goes into each one. God that double dose is just so sick, I'm like 😁 too hearing it. Yes, the microphone DID pick it up Woody. 👍
Ground clearance doesn't look to bad. Love the problem solving and thinking out of the box you guys are all about, half the fun of playing with cars. If everyone just did the same thing how boring would life be.
This would be a good use case for those oil-less comp turbos that use helicopter rotor grease or whatever. Would make it a lot simpler, though I'm not sure how good they are with street miles.
@@theskidfactory A company in the states Hellhorseperformance(Dot)com has at least 2 youtubers using his kits on Mustangs one had a bit of a problem as he and or his 2 helpers made an installation error but is now producing big boost, the other is truly enjoying his and obviously they have a boost controller in the car and both are running great. with them being twin the one thing both have said getting the wheels to stop spinning is fun. The turbo's are mounted low on mustangs producing at least 800 bhp I think the other said 1,000 bhp at the wheels and a quick grease gun job and they are off to the drag strip.
Why not use this set up on a same model outback? 40mm extra clearance from factory. stiffer springs and sway bars would help the extra body roll, just a thought
Gotta say fellas. Loved your cameo on badobsessionmotorsport project Binky. I nearly spat out my lemon squash when they said "no turbo" good to see other channels supporting each other. But I will be dead before Binky is finished! You know that it'll need more brackets after paint!
I've seen people (and know a friend) have success scavenging the oil from a low mount turbo with a power steering pump. Obviously no good unless you have the room, but a reasonably simple solution.
@@andrewstewart1464 Yeah i thought the same thing... mates one was running for a few years, his theory was it was cheap to replace (from a wrecker) if required but never had to.
What about if you use the Mercedes electric power steering, has a big container, not to big and I would say it could be run continuously. I think Project Binky is using one, for the power steering.
@@@PatricioGarcia1973 yes maybe, but the need for constant pump lubrication still stands. The best way I see it is to run it at lower load so that it isn't generating that much heat and friction. The same could be done for a mechanical PS pump by reducing the drive ratio, but that's pricier trial and error with pulleys than varying electric pump load. @Team Axle Stands what pump was used?
@@andrewstewart1464 haha funnily enough it was an "iron lion" in a VL and i think from memory it was the one from the RB30 which was removed from the car
Hey Al, speaking of unpopular Subaru engines, have you ever played with the old EA82? I have a Loyale (Leone) that I jammed a TD04 on on low boost. I think I may open up the engine and put a few miles into the ring gap, add a real ecu and turn it up. They have forged rods from the factory (just going off the thick seam line) and a closed deck block. I've also been ice racing it, just zinging it to 7k rpm sliding sideways, zero problems.
Until it blows a head gasket, or cooks the rear right piston, or cracks the head between the valves, or... (yes I've had, and still have, a car with this engine)
They weren't known for there reliability in EFI or Turbo form. The old 50kw carby engines tended to keep going forever but that may be because they had only 50kw.
@@theskidfactory The motor I have has 208k miles and runs like a champ with some basic tuneup stuff. Well, and with a turbo haha. I think I may turn it up and see what happens. Worst case scenario it blows and I go to an ej.
This twin turbo legacy is fire!!! I’ve always wanted a Legacy Sedan. I really wish subaru would bring back more turbo models. Can’t wait to see this car doing some pulls! The setup looks great!
Pity it requires engineering in most states and territories. Easy torque and an early stage which with more work can get much higher outputs. Hats off as usual guys.
Love that low mounted turbo. Add custom H6 version of Harrop or Cosworth FA supercharger design, the HP output will be insane. But the exhaust note, sounds like my late father's old Nissan Serena.
Awwww badass!! I was wondering why those exhaust housings were so short in the casting video. Now it all makes sense. Brilliant build slapping em right on there.
I used to have a 2008 outback, that thing was a rocket even without a turbo! I had always wanted to turbo it, but it ended up drowned in a swamp (true story) so I never got the chance.
I suspect that a larger inlet tube than outlet on the sump, connected to a Y that has a larger outlet than inlets, will help with the scavenging. I'm guessing the problem you had was one would flow free and the other will fill up with oil. By creating a restriction on the outlet of the sump and increasing the size of the Y outlet, I think it will cause the pump to pull on both sides more equally.
Would love to see you guys do something similar with an EG33. They have nice thick cylinder walls and share component dimensions with the EJ22, so beefier aftermarket components are relatively easy to come across. Rods, pistons, bearings, etc. Bonus points if you get something like this to fit under the native home of the engine without ground clearance issues... ;) Cheers from Canada. Stay safe eh?
Just read Team Axle Stands comment, was wondering if instead of engine oil for the turbo, you could use the powersteering oil & pump to lubricate the turbos? The hydraulic oil would handle the heat / lubrication a lot better and the PS pump would be more reliable? if the turbo blows contaminated oil would not destroy the engine.
Speaking of Dub-Dub noises- one of my long-time "in my head builds" would be a Soobie Ute/Brumby with a rotary fitted- would be a weapon on hill climbs! ;)
Speaking of R34 GTR turbos, is there a trick to keep the copper banjo bolt washers from leaking? I'm on round two on my r32 for both oil and coolant lines leaking at torqued spec. Small leak this time, almost something I can live with. However, i am off for the next two weeks and like the torture of pulling them off with the engine in the car. (Honestly isn't that bad, once you have done it).
Heat them with a little jet lighter till they just start glowing a dull red then let them air cool to make the copper soft Aka copper annealing, I'm sure there'd be a video about it
Al, question about the scavenging the low mount turbo setup. Have you ever tried a mechanical system from a dry sump scavenge pump? They often use twin 2-lobe roots pump, very small in size and normally belt driven. A bit expensive though, well a lot expensive. Have seen a few low mount current model Mustangs in the States using this setup from Dailey engineering. If using electric, what pump do you find most reliable for daily driving? Cheers, Mike.
Al stop telling people about the EZ30 being better. Gotta keep those resale's low so i can pick one up for cheaps man.
go eg33 if you can find one lol
but the EJ's are spectacularly crappy...I once ha a manual 2005 3l Liberty, were sold as spec B in sweden. Epic car.
